Excuse Me, Waiheke
A few days after Election Day, our American friends that work in the Christchurch and Wellington offices came to visit Auckland and commiserate with us. Evan, Porter, and Anna arrived on Friday afternoon so they could partake in the post-work drinks. A lot of people from the other offices were in town for a grad conference, so by 5 PM the big kitchen was packed with people with beers in hand.
Evan introduced me to Vicki and Ben from the Christchurch office and then everyone ventured to Velvet Burger for a quick bite. Next, we were off to Cassette Nine for some teapots and boogying.
The following morning a few of us took Greg’s new motorized raft out on its maiden voyage. We only had time for a quick spin but the salt water and ocean breeze was a great way to wake up. Then, we cooked up a big brekkie with everyone to prepare us for the long day ahead.
Tumblr media
Once we were all stuffed, we walked down to the viaduct to catch the ferry to Waiheke Island. Waiheke is an island just 40 minutes off shore from Auckland, packed with vineyards and beaches.
Tumblr media
When we arrived, we immediately got on the hop-on-hop-off bus to get to the wineries. Our first stop was at Tantalus Estate. We had a nice tasting at the bar but the upstairs was promptly closing for an event. The hostess showed us down to the cellar which we had to ourselves for almost the whole time. We felt quite classy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We made it out of the cellar and ventured into the daylight. At the next vineyard we went to, we were greeted by an American waiter. We all tried to guess where he was from - turns out it was Simi Valley, SoCal. All I could think of was Jimmy Tatro’s YouTube series which he was shockingly unaware of. The table next to us was having a blast, all dressed with their clothes backwards, complete with reversed Hawaiian shirts.
Tumblr media
At the next stop, we were able to get a table outside with a beautiful view of the estate. I really wanted to capture the memory, so in my uninhibited state I ushered over some random patrons and urged them to take a picture of us. Worth it? You tell me.
Tumblr media
Once that winery experience was well documented, we hopped on the bus to go to our last winery. Things were getting quite rowdy on the bus as everyone was starting to feel all the tastings. Somehow the bus driver put up with us and brought us to Mudbrick, which had spectacular views of the vineyard. We wined and dined one last time before catching a cab to the ferry. The ferry ride back felt like a party, complete with sing-alongs and table drumming.
Tumblr media
We really lucked out with weather for the day, as the rain was kind enough to hold off for us until we got back to Auckland. During the downpour, we rushed to a sushi restaurant with only 10 minutes left to order before the kitchen shut down. That was no problem for us - we were able to order a plentiful spread and end the night with full stomachs.

ONE DAY IN TORONTO ITINERARY – TOP THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO
Tumblr media
BEST TIME TO VISIT TORONTO
Toronto can be an all year round destination. From Christmas markets in the winter to one of the world’s biggest Pride parades in the summer. However, winter temperatures can drop  to  -30. On the contrary, summers go up to 50 degrees! The best time to go is in September and October when the city puts on it’s colourful fall coat but still sits in the 20 degree weather sweet spot or April and May – when you can catch the cherry blossom season and the city takes on a pink aura! Fall and spring allow you to sightsee while the city is still not overcrowded with tourists, traffic and extreme weather conditions.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT TORONTO
Toronto is Canada’s most populated city with 25 % of the entire country’s population settling in or around the city. You will find over 8000 restaurants with more opening daily, making Toronto to be every foodie’s dream destination. If you consider yourself a food lover, Food and Sightseeing tour is exactly what you should look for by coming to this marvelous city!
Toronto holds the Guinness world record for the longest street in the world, Yonge Street, that stretches for 1896 km!
The city is also known as an “artist mecca”, with over 20 000 artists residing in it as well as 25% of all Hollywood movies filmed in it. Toronto’s film industry brings in approx. 1.5B USD each year.
TOP THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO
With so many restaurants, museums, sights and sounds it can be overwhelming to try and see everything. Follow this guide and you’ll get the best of Toronto in one day!
Start your day at Union Station
Pearson airport express train will take you straight to Toronto’s busiest subway station – Union. This station has around 300,000 people passing on a standard business day and it’s the perfect start to experience the vibrant lifestyle of the city.
Have breakfast at St. Lawrence Market
A short 10 min walk on Front Street will take you to the St. Lawrence Market, named World’s Best Food Market by National Geographic in 2012.
With over 100 vendors, you can find anything from traditional Jewish “bagels” to Ukrainian perogies, local cheeses, or the Canadian peameal bacon sandwich. After you have breakfast have a coffee or a drink in the Great Hall and complete your visit with a walking tour to hear about the Markets 200-year-old history.
Explore the Distillery District
Continue walking on Front Street for 15 minutes and reach the historical Distillery District. The area is the best-preserved collection of Victorian Architecture in North America. It is the home to over 40 heritage buildings and courtyards, boutiques and artisan shops and a popular walking destination. You can shop, eat, explore or wake up your inner photographer here and meet people from all over the world.
Live on The Edge on CN Tower
Take the bus on Front Street or walk up to King Street and take the 504 streetcar that will get you near the CN (Canadian National) tower, before the night crowds. Built in 1976 as a satellite tower, it held the record for the World’s Tallest Building and Freestanding Structure until 2007.
You can choose to take the glass elevator to the observation deck, lie down on the glass floor or test your limits and walk outside on the towers edge around the circumference of the roof! The first of its kind in North America, The Edge Walk makes for a once-in-a-lifetime thrilling experience!
Have lunch in Kensington Market
Hop on the Spadina Streetcar that will take you through the hectic Chinatown all the way to Toronto’s most vibrant neighborhood – Kensington Market. It’s a bohemian neighbourhood populated with artists and packed with affordable cafes and restaurants. Since Canada’s Marijuana legalisation in 2018, you can find a variety of dispensaries and indulge in the local past time before choosing one of the restaurants. You can find Chinese, Portuguese or Colombian cuisine here. Looking to try something different? Try Rasta Pasta – a Jamaican Italian fusion!
Check out Queen Street West
Voted one of the coolest neighbourhoods by Vogue magazine and just a 5 min walk down from Kensington is the trendy Queen Street. The street stretches throughout the city but walk east from Bathurst Street and check out the cool shops like The Condom Shack or have a photo session in the Graffiti Alley. You can shop on the local “TSOQ” (The Store On Queen) for a fresh new look or have a drink at “Bowine Sex Club” (not an actual sex club) – the alternative live music haven downstairs and a relaxing tiki rooftop patio upstairs!
Shop at Eaton Centre and Bloor Street
Take the 501 East to Queen and Yonge and explore the largest Toronto mall on the longest street in the world. You can find clothes, shoes, jewelry at all price ranges here but if you want to indulge in some luxury shopping take the Yonge street and walk over Yonge-Dundas square for some street entertainment all the way up to Bloor Street and check out the stores like Holt Renfrew, Davids, Tiffany, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes for some luxury items.
Watch the sunset at the Harbourfront
Use your last hours to treat all your senses. Hop on the Yonge-University subway back to Union station and walk down to Harbourfront. It is the lakefront neighbourhood overlooking Toronto Islands and Lake Ontario. The views are spectacular and the air is fresh! You can try a local craft beer at Amsterdam Brewery, have a nice dinner or just hang out at Sugar Beach – an urban park beach with live music and festivals. Interested in a planned tour? Try one of the many boat tours. For an added romantic touch take the sunset cruise!
Party in the Fashion District
Still have time left? Take the 510 streetcar up to Fashion District and enjoy a night out. The name derives from the early 20th century when the area was a textile centre. Today, the old factories and warehouses house a variety of clubs and bars. Want to laugh the night away? Try Second City – a comedy club that gave the world comedians like Mike Myers and Martin Short. Feeling like a drink with a twist? Have one at SpiN nightclub – a martini bar with ping pong tables. Still not enough? Walk out on King St W and just close your eyes, wherever you point you will find a lounge, bar or club to go to!
WHERE TO STAY IN TORONTO
The Omni King Edward Hotel The original luxury hotel, built in 1903, this establishment has a royal feel to every moment of your stay. While consolidating present day solace and polish, The Omni King Edward Hotel still has the castle like loftiness. EXTRA TIPS FOR VISITING TORONTO
Buy a TTC Day Pass – instead of spending 3.25 CAD per trip, buy a day pass that allows you to travel all through the city on buses, streetcars and the subway. There are group and family options available as well. You can buy the pass at every Subway Station within the City of Toronto.
Plan your visit around one of the city’s festivals – September brings Toronto Film Festival and the hottest Hollywood stars flood the city for a week. You can check out one of the films as well. The same month has Nuit Blanche – an all night art installation and performance festival. Bars are open later and the city is packed until early morning the next day.
Use the bike share program – Toronto loves cyclists! There are public bikes you will find docked all around the city. You can rent them by hour, day or even a week. Just pick one up and drop it off wherever you see another station.

Santorini - Fira
The capital of Santorini is really just like a busy small town comparatively to anything back home. After settling in at our new abode, Anessis Apartments we headed in search of lunch and found Mama's House. Joel was feeling like an afternoon snooze so he headed back while I found a place to get my nails done. It's funny that you always know they are speaking about you in an Asian language back home or in Bali but I was a bit shocked to be called a 'malakas' by the girl doing my nails here as I literally hadn't said anything but answer her questions about where I was from (we had found out that malakas means wanker a couple of days before in a hilarious incident involving a car parking too close to a shop's ATM - the shop owner described him as a malakas from mykonos). That evening we headed off to Santos Winery at the recommendation of Erin. We went on the 630pm tour through the winery which was interesting and then sat down on their huge balcony to try their wines. When booking the tour package you can book anything from 1 to 18 glasses of wine...I went with 12 as it seemed a reasonable number. Joel and I had so much fun trying the wines, inventing our own tasting notes and jotting down our favourites. As we grew more exuberant we started chatting with the couple next to us. Mike and Katie from San Diego, California were headed to Paris for Katies brother's wedding after their tour of Santorini. Sometimes you just meet people and hit it off and these 2 are definitely in the good egg basket (along with the Candians from Mykonos). It may have been the (many) wines but Katie and I felt like definite spirit animals. We left Santos and unfortunately Mike and Katie who were off the next day in search of dancing which we hadn't done on our trip yet. In Fira town we headed to Tangos as recommended by Fay from Gizis. Unfortunately when we got there we found a ridiculously pretentious bar with tables of pretty people ordering Grey goose by the bottle and where cocktails were £20 each! While finishing our overpriced cocktail we starting chatting to an Australian couple which somehow devolved into him wanting us to all do a runner from the bar (even though we had paid.for our drinks?) He talked us into leaving first with his wife and while we were waiting for him she spent the whole time telling us how their favorite past time in Sydney was sneaking into A list parties or doing runners from restaurants which had got them arrested a few times. We finished the night with a cheeky dance in a absolutely chockers dive bar and then a delicious slice of pizza on the way home. The drunk pizza was so good that Joel and I went back there for breakfast (well noon by the time we dragged our hungover asses out of bed). I also had the best gelato of mt life - banoffee pie gelato! After an afternoon nap we hesded off on the bus to Oia at the very end of the island which is most famous for its sunset (except its the same sunset on the whole caldera side?) We walked the 300 steps down to Ammoudi bay on recommendation from Mike and Katie and had a lovely refreshing swim while watching people cliff jump. We stopped at a little taverna to sample the calamari before heading back up to Oia. I ashamedly took a donkey back up the steps (Joel walked them) which was both hilarious, frightening and uncomfortable all at once. At the very top (the donkeys can only go up to step 190) I was caught in the midst of a herd of donkeys coming down. This caused my guide to start yelling at the other guide so all you could see and hear where these stinky, fat donkey owners waving their long swatch sticks ar each other yelling malakas and other profanities I guess. For dinner I had made a reservation off TripAdvisor recommendations but when we got there we pretty quickly realised we had stumbled into the wrong venue with is still being in our day/exploring/swimming clothes. We went with it though and had a lovely last caldera sunset dinner serenaded by singer with piano (Until a group of 8 yankee doodles ruined the ambience with their wank and just when Id been convincing Joel that the yanks are great like Mike and Katie!) The bus ride home was a bit frightening as we had to stand which gave us a great view of the plummeting cliffs on our side and no security. Narrow roads along cliffs are a bitch when you have PTSD from a car accident! The next day we mooched around Fira until it was time to catch the bus to the port and then catch the ferry to Crete. The drive into the port was even more terrifying than the drive out! I calmed my nerves with a drink at the port and we were entertained by our waiter's antics. The Greeks are such larrikins with a great sense of play and humour. Next the 2 hour ferry ride to crete x

Things to do and see in Andros Greece
Cycladic Islands The Greek Islands Travel GreeceMarch 5, 2020
Andros is an island located in the Cyclades Archipelago and is just a ferry ride away from Rafina port. The island’s closeness to Athens is what makes it one of the most popular Greek island destinations for the perfect weekend getaway.
There is no airport in Andros, but when you arrive at Athens airport, you need to take a taxi or a bus to Rafina port and board a ferry that transfers you to Andros. In Andros, you’ll find all the major car rental companies.
Andros is the 2nd largest island of the Cyclades after Naxos, and because it is so verdant and fertile, it’s a great place for long walks.
It has a Mediterranean climate with cool to warm summers and mild winters. With so many inhabited islands, there are boats to serve these islands, and Greece is renowned for its shipping tradition.  Ferries and catamarans also make use of the main port Gavrio which also happens to be a popular holiday resort.
Things to do and see in Andros Greece
An Ultimate Hiking Destination
The island’s beautiful landscape is a mix of dazzling blue seas contrasting with the lush green hillsides. Small wonder that Andros is known as an ultimate hiking destination.
It offers wonderful walking trails cross mountain slopes and forests and takes you into enchanting little villages. Bird lovers will be amazed at the variety of birds that dwell in the forests including doves, whistling ducks and parrots. It is also pleasant hiking the 160km of well sign-posted trails during the summer as the winds cool you as you walk.
The varied landscape offers an assortment of hiking experiences. If you want to know more about the trails – they are shown in more detail in the map of Andros which can be got from the Anavasi map company. There is also a bookshop at the Andros harbor and the map is also available there.
Andros Route – the Best of Europe
One hundred kilometers of paths form a continuous walking route and this is known as the Andros Route. The path is fully marked and can be walked in 10 daily sections. In 2015 this Andros Route hiking trail received the hiking quality certification ‘Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe’ from the European Ramblers Association, the only island so far in Europe to have this hiking certification.
In fact, even though the island is great for all kinds of activities, it is the only Greek island with a certified network of hiking trails that add up to be roughly 300 kilometers. The paths are maintained by nature lover volunteers from all over the world.
Hora – the Capital of Andros
The main town is Hora and is also known as Andros. The capital town perches eye-catchingly on a rocky peninsula and you can imagine that the views are spectacular.
Lighthouse of Tourlitis
Unlike other Greek Islands that have the traditional whitewashed buildings, Andros Town is better known for its fantastic neoclassical mansions. You can take a walk through the town and admire the neoclassical mansions.
Neoclassical is an architectural style of the mid 18th century, with its roots dating date back to the 17th century when ancient Greek architecture was revived. That’s the interesting thing with these Greek isles – the main town nearly always has the name of the island itself.
When visiting Hora, a trip into the main street will give you the chance to wander into the shops and taverns there or perhaps relax in the shady Kairi Square and listen to the tinkling sounds of the marble fountain.
St George Church
There are other impressive buildings in the town and lovers of arts and culture will be impressed with the museums, art gallery and churches.
 Sightseeing in and around Andros:
An illustrious art scene –
Andros is an island characterized by its art and culture. Art lovers will relish the many museums, staring with Palaiopolis. In 1956 excavations were started and in 2003 they opened the Archaeological Museum of Palaiopolis. It has collections of artworks ranging from the Classical to the Roman period, with an important exhibition being Pegasus, a marble winged, mythical horse dating to the 5th century B.C.
Andros celebrates art in different ways and there are many art exhibitions and other festivities taking place on the island. The dance festival of the Musical society is every June and there are other summer festivals in Gavrio and the other villages in northwestern Andros. You become part of the Andriot spirit, with wine, music, dancing and food.
Each year the capital, Andros Town or Chora organizes a music and arts festival known as the Ploes Festival, highlighting all the music and art events presented in Andros.
Museum of Contemporary Art
The purpose of this museum was to exhibit the collection of works by Andros sculptor, Michael Tombros. The founders of the museum, Basil and Elise Goulandris also have their personal collection of well known and distinguished Greek and foreign artists. The Museum offers free guided tours and there are also videos which go with the exhibitions.
There is a newer part of the museum which hosts exhibitions of more modern Greek painters from 1983 to 1985. The new wing of the museum also has a museum shop, library, and projection room as well as space set aside for international exhibitions. The Roof Garden, ideal for hosting events, offers views of the Aegean, the Andros Yacht Club and the chapel of Agia Thalassini.
Maritime Museum of Andros
If ships, captains, the high seas and nautical journeys intrigue you, the Maritime Museum of Andros, founded in 1972 will delight and fascinate you. It has exhibits of life on the seas before the 1821 Greek War of Independence.
Olive Museum,  Ano Pitrofos village
This is an old preserved olive mill that dates back to 1823 and which was transformed into a museum in 1997. It retains its original equipment and in 1997 was transformed into a museum. Visitors will be able to get an idea of traditional oil production in the Cyclades.
Other Must-See Points of Interest:
Several Monasteries –
Monastery of Panachrantos
Built in the 10th century by the Byzantine emperor Nikiforos Fokas, the monastery, with its aura of tranquility, is set high in the Geronakas mountainous in the south of Andros. It offers splendid views of some of the villages such as Menites, Lamia and Messaria.
There are actually monks living in the monastery too. It is surrounded by a high wall, giving you the idea of a fortress. Traditionally, it is believed the monastery was built in a place shown by the icon of the Holy Mother, an icon still found in the monastery.  Interestingly, you’ll also find the skull of the martyr Agios Panteleimon.
The Zoodohou Pigis
This monastery of Zoodochou Pigis is referred to as Monastiraki by the locals and is found near the village Christos in Agios Kirykos. It has been renovated a few times. What is of interest with this monastery are the preserved cells and an ecclesiastical tabloid that dates way back to the 19th century AD.
Lots of villages to visit
Ano Felos
Messaria
This ancient village that dates back to the 17th century has some old manor houses such as the mansion of George Emmanuel Argyros, built in 1888 and transformed into a museum that holds items from the 19th century. If you’re looking for accommodation in this ‘must-see’ village, the museum’s ground floor is a 5-star guest house.
The village has lots of shops and restaurants and it is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. You can visit one of the wineries for a wonderful wine-tasting experience.
Menites
The mountain village is found about 6 kilometers from the capital, Chora. Menites is also close to Messaria and is magnificently built on the Petalo Mountain. The village is famous for its abundance of water and its springs. The village has plenty of paved paths and alleys, and in fact you can walk to the Panachrantou Monastery.
The Feast of Dionysos is celebrated in Menites and there is plenty of festive fanfare with music, dancing, eating and drinking.
Souvenirs – Batik Fabric and Garment manufacturing Factory
On Central Andros, next to the Lighthouse Club in Fresh Creek is Androsia Batik where you can see artisans creating designs for cotton and silk fabrics for cool island-style wear. You can buy skirts, caftans, shirts, shorts and lots of trendy accessories, all beautifully hand-painted.
The famous factory has been in business since 1973 and is known for its brightly colored garments. You can actually see artisans at work on the fabrics and the store provides super gifts for you to take home to family and friends.
Cool Places to Dine in Andros Greece
You can get to enjoy all the traditional flavors of Greece in the local taverns of which there are some pretty good ones. Andros is a place for delectable Greek island food at its best. You’re bound to come across Labriatis – marinated goat stuffed with onions, cheese, parsley, eggs, butter and olive oil and then baked in the oven with rosemary.
Oti Kalo is a charming restaurant overlooking the small fishing port of Batsi. The restaurant has a high position, offering splendid views and great food. People come from far to enjoy their deliciously popular omelet with country-style pork sausages and potatoes.
Nightlife and Bars on Andros Greece
Andros has a vibrant nightlife, after all the Greeks are known to be fun-loving, entertaining people. There are plenty of bars, night clubs, cafes and restaurants as well as beach parties that you won’t want to miss. Music, dance, wine and good friends are what the nightlife is all about. Many of the hotels and beach bars offer music from live bands and these are generally crowded in the summer.
An exciting range of Accommodation Options
Andros offers a range of fantastic beach holiday experiences. There are many self-catering apartments, chalets, guest houses, cottages, small and large hotels in the villages, towns and cities. You can easily plan a trip to Andros and get accommodation that suits your budget.
You can book your accommodation online. Some of the accommodation offers a shuttle service from the port to your accommodation and there are also taxis on the island.
You can take your pick from stylish guest houses in Andros such as Lorenzia’s House which offers fabulous amenities such as free wifi as well as a bicycle- and car rental service for your convenience.
 Beach days in Andros
The beach of Achla and Saint Nikolaos church
The capital Andros Chora has some beautiful beaches, with the main beach being Niborio. You’ll find beach loungers to rent as well as umbrellas. The beach is ideal for families and there are cafes and taverns close by to keep beachgoers fed and watered.
In the vicinity of Andros Chora are a number of other beaches that can actually be reached by foot. One of these is Sineti Beach with its beautiful white beaches and turquoise waters.
Megali Peza Beach
This is a beautiful beach, somewhat secluded and on the northern side of Andros Cyclades. It’s a small beach with crystal clear water and is thought to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. If you’re looking for a quiet time of sun tanning and swimming, this beach is perfect for you, although you need to know that there aren’t any facilities offered.
Batsi Beach
This is a popular beach in Andros and with good reason. Unlike some less popular beaches, this resort town with its beach is well organized with lots of tourist amenities and you can rent deckchairs and umbrellas.
You can relax on the soft, white sand and be highly entertained by all the activities and water sports. The shallow water also makes it ideal for families and it is protected from the wind. The fishing harbor is close by and of course, there are plenty of cafes and taverns offering traditional Greek food, pastries and other treats for the beach.
It can be enjoyable taking a stroll from the beach and going into the town of Batsi where there are more restaurants and other shops.
Summing Up
Andros summons images of blue skies, endless beaches and never a dull moment. If you plan well, you can do a lot over a weekend, a week or a month, especially as many popular sights are close to each other to visit. The island offers so many amazing experiences and there is no doubt you’ll have a fantastic time.
