celebrating women's history month
Dr. Patrick and Dr. Hannan recently gave us an inside view of plastic surgery at insideSTYLE. These two amazing surgeons not only run a successful private practice, but also give back on a daily basis to our veterans. Their work is truly inspiring. Additionally, they help women feel better about themselves through their practice. We are grateful for their dedication to their patients and to our nation's heroes. #plasticsurgery #veterans #womenshealth #washingtonwomensplasticsurgery

[ad_1] Despite taking it down, social media company X will be fined by the city of San Francisco for the construction of an illuminated sign atop its building. Patrick Hannan, spokesman for the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, on Monday said the company would be fined for the “unpermitted installation of the illuminated structure.” He did not specify how much X would be fined but said it would cover the cost of building permits, the city’s investigation into the structure and taking the structure down. The announcement comes after workers took down the large X on Monday, three days after it was constructed. The city received 24 complaints over the weekend from people who said the bright lights and stroboscopic effect of the sign caused “distress and nausea.” City officials informed X that the structure would need to be taken down or brought up to code. Inspectors said they visited the building three times over the weekend and were denied access each time. On Monday, inspectors arrived to discover the sign already being dismantled. The X was placed on top of the San Francisco building as part of the large rebranding effort, spearheaded by X owner Elon Musk. Last week the rebranding began in earnest, with the Twitter app changing formally to X, ditching many of the aesthetics of the app. The rebranding was not all digital. Last week, police stopped workers from taking down the large Twitter bird hanging off the side of the building. Authorities said X had not blocked off the sidewalk to prevent pedestrian injuries. The bird has since been removed. Mr. Musk wants to turn X into an “everything app” that could handle social media networking as well as shopping and financial transactions. (function (d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.5"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); (document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); [ad_2] Source link

New ‘X’ Sign on Twitter’s Headquarters in San Francisco Is Under Investigation
An “X” sign installed on Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters on Friday as part of the company’s rebranding is under investigation by the city for lacking proper permits, according to officials. “A building permit is required to make sure the sign is structurally sound and installed safely,” Patrick Hannan, a spokesman for the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection said in a statement on…

Insignificance (Nicolas Roeg, 1985) Cast: Theresa Russell, Michael Emil, Gary Busey, Tony Curtis, Will Sampson, Patrick Kilpatrick. Screenplay: Terry Johnson. Cinematography: Peter Hannan. Production design: David Brockhurst. Film editing: Tony Lawson. Music: Stanley Myers, Hans Zimmer. The imaginary conversation, bringing together people who never really met, is a time-honored way of exploring ideas, which is what Terry Johnson had in mind when he wrote a play about the encounter of Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein, Joe McCarthy, and Joe DiMaggio in a hotel room in 1952. To emphasize the fact that it was a play about ideas, he didn't call them by their real names but labeled them The Actress, The Professor, The Senator, and The Ballplayer. They could have been called Sex, Intellect, Politics, and Muscle, for all that matters. What we have in the film version is a sometimes provocative but for the most part muddled intersection of people whose myths are larger than their actuality. In the movie's best scene, Marilyn uses some toys and balloons to demonstrate to Einstein that she actually knows the theory of relativity. Whether she understands it, she admits, is another matter. At this point, the film verges on something like an exploration of ideas, the relationship between knowledge and understanding. But that's too much for a film to explore and still hold an audience's attention, so mostly we are left in Insignificance with an exploration of personalities, riddled with flashbacks to scenes from the lives of Marilyn, Einstein, and DiMaggio -- but not, interestingly, to McCarthy's life, which makes his inclusion in this stew of celebrities a problem to be pondered. He's there primarily to underscore Einstein's sense of guilt at having come up with ideas that contributed to the creation of the atomic bomb and hence the Cold War that caused the rise of McCarthyism. There's really no way to resolve the various conflicts among the characters than to end with a fantasy scene in which the hotel room is destroyed in an atomic cataclysm -- only to reverse the footage of destruction for a scene in which Marilyn bids Einstein goodbye. In the end, the film becomes mostly a story about the loss of identity suffered by celebrities, aided by some very good performances but undercut by a surplus of images that demand but don't reward interpretation.

The Sundays // Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic // 15 January 1990
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
" Reading, Writing and Arithmetic is the debut studio album by English alternative rock band The Sundays. It was released in 1990 on Rough Trade Records in the United Kingdom, and on DGC Records in the United States. The album's title is a reference to the band's hometown, Reading, Berkshire.
//The most distinctive ingredient about the Sundays was always Harriet Wheeler's voice, which positions the group as a kind of missing link between the ethereal soundscapes of the Cocteau Twins and the more chart-friendly indie-pop of The Cranberries. Like Liz Fraser and Dolores O'Riordan, Wheeler's vocals transfer effortlessly from a fragile whisper to a passionate shriek, taking often simple melodies and leading them on a merry dance across her whole impressive range. //
The Sundays never again recaptured the heights of their debut record, fading slowly into obscurity as the world they inhabited gave way to the brash, confident swagger of Britpop. While Reading, Writing And Arithmetic is perhaps a little too fey and lightweight to warrant true classic status, it is nevertheless a sweet, beguiling piece of work that is utterly of its time, yet still fresh and enjoyable today. Daniel makes ridiculous claims – will his political colleagues challenge him? The news that a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) has resigned from because he chose to ignore the recommendations that the group along with the Conservative Government set out six weeks ago has of course filled the front pages of most newspapers today.

“RELATIVELY”
Al Jazeera, by Patrick Gathara:
“It has also revealed a mean streak of racist exceptionalism with which many Europeans, and people of European heritage, tend to regard themselves.
“They seem so like us. That is what makes it so shocking … War is no longer something visited upon impoverished and remote populations. It can happen to anyone,” wrote Daniel Hannan in the UK’s The Telegraph. “We are in the 21st century, we are in a European city, and we have cruise missile fired as if we were in Iraq or Afghanistan, can you imagine,” a commentator wailed on French TV.”
“Reporting from the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, Charlie D’Agata, a correspondent with CBS News in the US, declared Ukraine “isn’t a place, with all due respect, like Iraq or Afghanistan, that has seen conflict raging for decades … This is a relatively civilised, relatively European – I have to choose those words carefully, too – city, where you wouldn’t expect that or hope that it’s going to happen.” He later apologised.”
From a relatively civilized, relatively European, almost but not quite like you Polish person: please shut up about racism, enough pearl-clutching from the safety of your “civilized” countries. Clean your own houses and attitudes first 😡
