Reeeeeaallly trying to get through my self-assigned readings for this talk I'm giving on how contemporary Catholic feeling may have helped lend THE AMITYVILLE HORROR its enduring aura of "true story"-ness, but I just cannot stop gazing upon the Hall of the Pontifical Audiences, built in 1971 under Paul VI who was extremely concerned about the public's loss of feeling for a literal Satan. I mean holy fucking shit, literally.

Before I get into an argument with a protesant, what is your thoughts about the papal visitation hall, Paul vi audience hall/pontifical audience hall?
I acknowledged the whole building (inside and out) along with the pope's seat is very evil looking but I want to defend the catholic faith which is kind of hard when the whole thing is serpent looking cause looks like something satan himself would design and delight in -- like what can I say or get around this ugly looking thing? I really hate the whole structureal thing and can't figure out why it is used or was even acceptead
Here's a quote from the artist, Pericle Fazzini about the inspiration for the piece that you're referencing.
"Suddenly there came to me the idea of Christ preaching peace for 2,000 years and the place where he prayed for the last time: the olive grove of Gethsemane, I had the idea of depicting Christ as if he were rising again from the explosion of this large olive grove, peaceful site of his last prayers. Christ rises from this crater torn open by a nuclear bomb; an atrocious explosion, a vortex of violence and energy.”

anon: if Harry were to die of suicide due to mental health issues, do you think he’ll get a state funeral? Or if not a state funeral, one on the same scale as Diana’s?
State funerals tend to be reserved for monarchs and figures of national importance such as Prime Ministers; the last PM and non-royal to rate a state funeral was Churchill in 1965.
Diana received a ceremonial funeral as a future monarch’s spouse because of the tragic circumstances as well as public sentiment whipped up by Tony Blair; Prince Philip and the Queen Mother, as monarch’s spouses, each had a ceremonial funeral. Princess Margaret as a monarch's sibling had a private rather than ceremonial funeral. And in the previous generation, the only sibling of King George VI to have a ceremonial funeral was his brother the Duke of Gloucester who served in WWII and then was Governor General of Australia. Their younger brother, the Duke of Kent who died in an air crash in WWII, had a private funeral as did all the other siblings (including the Duke of Windsor).
The only royal family ceremonial funerals since 1900 have been for: Duke of Teck, who was King George V’s father-in-law (1900), Duke of Cambridge (1904), The Marquess of Milford Haven (1921), Queen Alexandra (1925), Queen Mary (1953), Duke of Gloucester (1974), Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1979), Diana (1997), Queen Mother (2002), Richard III (2015), Prince Philip (2021). Of that list, those who weren’t a monarch or a monarch’s spouse had distinguished military careers.
This document from the House of Commons is helpful,
https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN06600/SN06600.pdf
Some points from the document,
:: “State funerals are relatively rare, and are sometimes mixed in the popular imagination with other funerals of senior royal figures, which are held in public with ceremonial features but do not constitute state funerals in a formal sense. Typically, in either type of funeral, there is a military procession carrying the coffin to Westminster Hall, a period of lying in state, and a service at Westminster Abbey or St Paul’s Cathedral.”
:: “A state funeral is defined by the Royal Encyclopedia as “generally limited to Sovereigns, but may, by order of the reigning monarch and by a vote of Parliament providing the fund, be extended to exceptionally distinguished persons.” Examples of people other than monarchs who have been given a state funeral include Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, Lord Palmerston and Sir Winston Churchill. A state funeral is commonly held to differ from a ceremonial funeral in two respects: a parliamentary motion authorises it, and the gun carriage bearing the coffin to the lying in state has, since the funeral of Queen Victoria, been drawn by Royal Navy sailors rather than by horses.”
:: “A ceremonial royal funeral is “for those members of the Royal Family who hold high military rank, for the consort of the Sovereign and heir to the throne”. The Queen Mother was given a ceremonial royal funeral, and Princess Diana’s funeral was also a ceremonial rather than state funeral.
Thank you so much!

Pope Francis delivered today at the end of the general audience a prayer asking for peace for war in Ukraine, following the Russian invasion, which began with: “Forgive us the war, Lord.”
Before the thousands of faithful gathered in the Paul VI Hall for the general audience, the pontiff did not launch an appeal to Ukraine today, but did deliver an exciting prayer written by the archbishop of Naples, Mimmo Battaglia.
“Lord Jesus, born under the bombs of Kiev, have mercy on us! Lord Jesus, who died in the arms of his mother in a bunker in Kharkov, have mercy on us! Lord Jesus, sent twenty years to the front, have mercy on us! Lord Jesus, who still see armed hands in the shadow of your cross, have mercy on us! ”, Francis prayed before the sepulchral silence of the auditorium.

And the prayer continued: “Forgive us Lord, if we do not settle for the nails with which we pierce your hand, we continue to drink the blood of the dead torn by weapons. Forgive us, if these hands you created to protect have become instruments of death.”
“Forgive us, Lord, if we continue to kill our brother, if we continue as Cain removing the stones from our field to kill Abel. Forgive us, if we continue to justify cruelty with our tiredness, if with our pain we legitimize the brutality of our actions”, the pope prayed, before concluding: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we plead with you! Stop Cain's hand!”

Before holding the audience, the pope also reminded the children fleeing bombs in Ukraine and “who are suffering” and said that they are “victims of the pride of adults”, meeting a group of Italian students before the general audience.
“And now I ask you to think, to reflect: let us think about so many children, boys, girls, who are at war, who are suffering today in Ukraine. They are like you, like you, six, seven, ten, fourteen years old...” , indicated in his greeting at St. Peter's Basilica to the students of the “La Zolla” School in Milan.
“You have a future ahead of you, a certainty of growing up in a society of peace, but these little ones, they have to flee from bombs, they are suffering... with that cold weather,” he added.

On this day 60 years ago, Pope St. Paul VI was crowned with the papal tiara during his coronation ceremony. It was presented to the National Shrine in 1968 by Archbishop Luigi Raimondi, Apostolic Delegate to the United States.
The coronation tiara can be viewed in the Memorial Hall. It remains the first and only papal tiara to be displayed outside of Rome.

vi.– backstory
Maria Snow was born the youngest of two children in Saltburn-by-the-Sea in England. From a young age, she loved the ocean and everything to do with water. At the age of 3, her father was drafted in WWII and was absent from her life for the next 6 years. During that period, her mother made sure that both of her kids were well-rounded individuals, teaching Maria how to fence and signing her up for the local church choir. These experiences shaped Maria into a strong, outgoing girl. Perhaps too strong, since one of her mom's friends convinced her to sign her up for finishing school. As a result, she was sent to the Cygnet Hall Finishing School for several months when she was 7. She hated it there, but it shaped a lot of her mannerisms as an adult. When she was 9, her father came back from the war. For as long as possible afterwards, he made up for lost time, resparking Maria's love of the sea. She would go fishing with her dad very often on the family boat, the MS Hammerhead. A few years later, her brother James enlisted in the Royal Marines, leaving Maria as the only kid in the house. When she turned 18, she joined the Women's Royal Navy Service and was assigned to the HMS Amphitrite. There, she met fellow ensign Nora Royston and the two fell in love. They kept a secret relationship for almost 5 years, until tragedy struck. In 1959, the Amphitrite hit an unexpected storm in the North Sea, which none of the sailors on board were prepared for. The ship went down, claiming 5 lives, including that of Nora. Maria was honorably discharged after that, staying at home with her parents and helping out with the family fishing business. In 1962, a visitor showed up at the family home asking for James Snow, who at the time, was in Ireland with his wife and children. She wanted to hire him for a job overseas, but after hearing of Maria's qualifications, hired her in his stead.
…and then the fic starts.

The new basilica was built on the Cardinal Giovanni by Cream in 1123. Cardinal Scipione Borghese enlarged and restored it in 1625 giving the appearance of which is at present. The parish was erected, according to a plaque close to the sacristy, in 1127, but it certainly dates from the first half of the century V: her priests are in fact among the subscribers of the Roman synods of 499 and 595. Pope Gregory III (731-741), as recounted in the "Liber pontificalis" we instituted a monastery that kept distinct from the "titulus", whose priests were involved in the care of souls. Cardinal John of Crema, as the two tombstones nearby the entrance to the sacristy, built there in 1128 a chapel with cloister (V. Fork, "Subscriptions", III, 169 nn. 486-487). Calisto II, April 17, 1121, and Innocent III, July 23, 1199, intervened to solve the problems of administration Parish Church of St. Savior of the Court in relation to those of S. Krševan. Innocent III replaced the monks with the Canons Regular of the Savior which you remained until 1480 when Pope Sixtus IV entrusted the parish to the Carmelites. Pius IX, June 1, 1847, settled in the basilica, the Trinitarians, who still administer it. The current state of architecture is due to the card. Scipione Caffarelli Borghese, nephew Paul V, who committed it to Giovanni Battista Soria (1581-1651). In the apse, Madonna and Child with Saints James and Grisogono, mosaic of the school of Pietro Cavallini (c. 1290). Pope Francis shares meal with the poor
By: Hannah Brockhaus, 14 November 2022
Tumblr media
Pope Francis during lunch on the World Day of the Poor, 13 November 2022 (📷: Daniel Ibáñez / CNA)
Pope Francis had lunch with around 1,300 poor from Rome on Sunday.
The meal was part of several Vatican-sponsored initiatives marking the 6th annual World Day of the Poor, including a free mobile medical clinic in St. Peter’s Square.
After two years off due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the free lunch was again offered in the Paul VI Hall for people in Rome living in poverty.
Tumblr media
Pope Francis has always joined the meal — which began in 2017 during the first World Day of the Poor; he spends time in conversation with those at his table and he greets others who approach him.
Throughout his pontificate, Francis has placed a strong emphasis on concrete outreach to those in need.
Tumblr media
He has spoken often about those at the margins of society and condemned what he has called a “throwaway culture,” which neglects people it finds inconvenient or a burden.
At Mass on November 13, the pope said:
“We should always repeat this to ourselves, especially at times of greatest trouble:
God is a Father, and he is at my side. He knows and loves me; he does not sleep, but watches over me and cares for me. If I stay close to him, not a hair of my head will perish.”
“And how do I respond to this?” he added. “By looking at our brothers and sisters in need; by looking at the throw away culture that discards the poor and people with few possibilities; a culture that discards the old and unborn… by looking at all of them; as a Christian, what should I do in this moment?”
Pope Francis has also shared meals with the poor during visits to Assisi and Bologna, Italy.
After the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta on 4 September 2016, the pope offered a pizza lunch to 1,500 poor cared for by the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa’s order.

The Resurrection, 1975 by Pericle Fazzini An absolutely stunning work of art that captures the essence of hope and renewal. The sculpture, which is located in the Vatican's Paul VI Audience Hall, depicts Jesus rising from a nuclear crater, his arms outstretched in a gesture of triumph over death and destruction. The details of the sculpture are breathtaking - from the folds of Jesus' robe to the expression on his face - and it's hard not to be moved by the beauty and power of this piece. #IlikeItaly #Italy #Roma #Rome #VisitRome #igersitalia #IgersRoma #RaccontandoRoma #CastelSantAngelo #PericleFazzini (at Castel Sant'angelo) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp7olgCLIZg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
