Archangel Invocation in time of Pandemic

I call on the inner planes to witness.  I state my purpose as thus.

I pass through the arch of stone.

I walk through a field of golden corn.

1816 rok, lato, Villa Diodat położona w miejscowości Cologny nieopodal jeziora Genewskiego w Szwajcarii, noc pełna rozpusty, Lord Byron nie szczędzi gościom nalewki z opium. A gości ma wszak nietuzinkowych. Odwiedzili go państwo Shelley, Peter i Mary. Jest jeszcze przyrodnia siostra Mary, Claire Clairmont oraz przyjaciel Byrona, lekarz i pisarz John William Polidori. Czas, gdy Byron wynajmował posiadłość był wyjątkowo inspirujący dla odwiedzających twórcę Giaura. Kilka nocy wystarczyło podobno, by Mary wpadła na pomysł "Frankensteina", a Polidon "Wampira".

Obrazoburczy, intensywny, psychodeliczny - tak można w skrócie opisać wybitny utwór Kena Russella. Trzeba przyjąć, że Russell wiele w swoim obrazie sugeruje. Do spotkania wspomnianych historycznych postaci owego lata rzeczywiście doszło, ale resztę należy uznać za insynuacje, co nie znaczy, że są one mało prawdopodobne. Nie od dziś wiadomo, że otwieranie się na różne substancje potrafi poszerzać horyzonty, zmieniać optykę, uchylać drzwi przez które być może byśmy nie chcieli przejść. Takie epizody mogą stać się impulsem do ożywienia literackiego geniuszu. Ken Russell w swoim stylu, bez hamulców przedstawia towarzystwo jako nader wyzwolone. Byron (odegrał go tutaj Gariel Byrne) jest w ujęciu reżysera postacią mroczną, skorą do eksperymentów, ale też mocno już zdemoralizowaną. Poznał już wszystko, poskramiał wszelkie pragnienia, jest nieco zblazowany, ale z pewnością zachowuje się jako gospodarz potrafiący zapewnić swoim gościom wikt i opierunek. Reszta jest w niego wpatrzona jak w obrazek. Polidori zmaga się ze swoją seksualnością, pozostali w myśl wolnej miłości korzystają ze swojej młodości, choć wydają się w tym momencie lekko znudzeni. To wszystko już mieli, przyszedł czas na laudanum, które zawiera około 10% opium. Narkotyk i skutki jego zażycia wypełniają filmowy język. Russell doskonale czuje się w zaciąganiu psychodelicznych zasłon zarówno na akcję, jak i na twarze swoich bohaterów.

Laudanum wykrzywia facjaty, dusze i umysły. Wrzuca do studni cierpienia, rozkoszy, strachu i wyzwolenia. Powracają traumatyczne przeżycia (Mary Shelley straciła dziecko, a incydent ten objawia się w czasie wizyty u Byrona jako koszmarna groza). Reszta cierpi i walczy z własnymi horrorami, każdy na swój sposób. Zintensyfikowany opiumowy filmowy trip jawi się w rękach Russela jak halucynogeny poemat, w którym rzeczywistość zostaje zakopana kilka metrów pod ziemią. Opętańcze fantasmagorie filmowane są z iście precyzyjną dyscypliną. Russell nie pozwala na chwilę oddechu, jedna noc wypełniona jest makabrą, ułudą, ale też miejscami druzgocącą prawdą. Surrealistyczny miejscami klimat potęguje fantastyczna oprawa muzyczna autorstwa Thomasa Dolby'ego, który oddał w niej całe szaleństwo rozgrywające się na korytarzach i w przestronnych komnatach szwajcarskiej posiadłości. Natomiast zdjęcia Mike'a Southona to operatorski majstersztyk, płynne przejścia do krainy amoku, fantastyczne łapanie widoku z perspektywy ludzkich mroków. 

Dzieło Kena Russella wyśmienicie łapie (i łączy) historyczne wątki, ubiera je w szaty horroru, doprawia narkotycznym szaleństwem, a o świcie przychodzi otrzeźwienie, podszepty ubiegłej nocy jeszcze długo będą trawić bohaterów "Gotyku". Na szczęście dla czytelników.
