been thinking about the possible versaille spinnoff and im sad bc i dont remember what people said, but i think the jacket was earlier than versailles time period not later, which would mean if it was a monchevvy spinnoff (i cant let myself think its not or my heart will die) then it will have to be recast bc of how linear time works AND WORST OF ALL my darling precious liselotte my love will not be there

I heard that queer people in medieval france had it easier in the rule of Luis XIV since his brother Phillipe was openly gay and liked to crossdress, so cracking down on them would have meant harming his brother too!

Is that true?

If yes, does that mean they had a good relationship or was it more along the line of "It's not good for the reputation of the royal line if I get my brother in trouble" ?

Cause it seems like something done out of love to me but maybe that's only through a modern perspective....?

I wouldn't say easier. Many queer people would have been persecuted during this time but most of them would have been lower class. Upper class and royal queer people had a lot more wiggle room and could have relationships as long as it was discreet. Phillippe d'Orleans was a very overt case and it did cause some trouble for the royal family, but since Philippe was also a war hero, nobody really complained that loudly. And there is the theory that Anne of Austria, their mother, encouraged Philippe's feminine side to ensure he couldn't be seen as a threat to Louis (which protected both of them).

I started re-watching Versailles lately and in my very unpopular opinion Evan Williams does not match the Chevalier at all. He acted as a love-sick puppy, annoying and cowardly (like not wanting to go to war ? he was quite the warrior historically). Alex is average as Duc d'Orleans but he was waaaay too stern. Idk I guess it makes sense though since they are both straight IRL.

im yet to read up on the history (ive been saying this for years but i promise i will get to it eventually), but i know a lot of fans have been saying the same - that the way chev and phillipe have been portrayed is not historically accurate at all, esp for chev.

based on what i have seen people say, i think it's a massive shame that the writers decided to change their personalities and characters and it also makes me wonder why they made these decisions.

often when i talk about why i don't rlly like monchevy, ppl always claim im hating on them as historical figures, or they argue that the ship in the show isn't historically accurate. and as many fans know that mlm are often portrayed as violent, aggressive or struggle with power imbalance, it does seem the same stereotypes have been applied to them too (although like i said, i haven't read up on the true history of them yet). but if that's the case, id imagine that's why they portrayed the characters in the same way too.

from what i remember, the actors did read up on the history when they were in the show. so based on what fans have spoken abt regarding the actual history, it's startling to see them fine (and proud) of the portrayal. but like you say op, they are both straight men irl
