GoodReads Synopsis:
An insightful and dramatic novel of women’s friendship, feuds, and fame as a 1990s pop music group, reminiscent of Destiny’s Child, reunites for a second shot at mega-success and must deal with both the new demands of today’s social media and the same old traps of yesterday. Perfect for fans of Terry McMillan and Sheila Williams.
Angel. Carmen. Doreen. Jade. Talented Memphis girls who had a brush with pop music fame—guided by Carmen's warm-hearted mother. But when she was elbowed out for a bigger manager, Carmen walked too. The bitter breakup shattered the Diamonds' never-easy “sisterhood” —and cost them the big-time Now a reunion offers a fresh start, just as mid-life struggles are pushing all four to the brink.
My Review:
This was a quick and easy read but, the story itself was very predictable and underwhelming.
The story of The Diamonds is told through the point of view of each member, with two (maybe 3) chapters told by them as a group. Jade, Carmen, Doreen, Angel, and Ms. Gloria really give you Xscape, plus Mama Joyce or, Destiny's Child, plus Ms. Tina.
One of my biggest issues with the story is, how quickly the pacing of the chapters - it all seemed rushed and I had no concept of the timing of the story. From what seems like just a few days is really months. There is a car accident and then a few chapters later, it has been a whole year. It feels like so much was put into each storyline but, nothing was really fleshed out. The characters have no substance.
Carmen spends most of the story making rash and immature decisions without thinking of the long-term (or even short-term) implications of her actions. Most of her behavior is not the way I would envision a 40-something-year-old woman.
Doreen has a sordid past with her husband and to their credit, turned their lives around. However, for most of the story her husband, James is selfish, controlling, unhelpful, and rude! I hated that for Doreen and wanted her to stand up for herself.
Jade, oh Jade. Naive as they can be but also, with a husband who is literal trash. Her personal story and journey were much more confusing to me. Again, the pacing just didn't allow for her to be fully fleshed out.
Angela (Angel) is BIG "I just want to be solo" vibes. While she does have some redeeming qualities, it comes late in the story. From the jump, she rubbed me the wrong way.
Another issue is, when we jump to the present-day Diamonds, what year is the present day? The prologue says that the original group got together in 1991, then six years later they were stars and preparing to tour internationally when Carmen quits, this would be 1997. Then 20 years later is 2017 and the story runs for a little over a year, let's say 2 (I think). By my math, if its 2019 and Doreen is 40, then in 1991, she would have been 12! Something about the timeline is throwing me off.
Final thoughts: It reads like a Tyler Perry play or film. Lots of emphasis on God even when it's borderline ridiculous. "God is the best lawyer. We just need to pray," that is a direct quote.
One-Word Summary: Laughable

Station 19 S7E1:
Omg, I forgot Dixon died lol.
Ooh, Andy's gonna be hallucinating Jack all episode, that's fun.
I love Carina.
Ayyy, I missed Maya's pep talks.
Ooof, poor Phyllis. But. Really can't blame her. Still, it'd be nice if we could hear the others' story.
Kitty acting like nothing's wrong.
Holy shit, Emmett's back. Is this gonna fuck up Travis/Eli.
Honestly surprised Phyllis gave in.
DAMN, okay. Kitty blaming Travis for Dixon's death is so fucked up and wrong.
WHAT PART OF NO SIRENS DID THEY NOT UNDERSTAND.
I think the chef is hitting on Carina. Nvm, cheerful conversation is his coping mechanism. Respect.
Marsha is so wholesome, I'll always love her.
No way Vic jumps without Phyllis going first. They better not kill her off.
Maya to the rescue. 👍
Phyllis is definitely going to jail. And/or a psych ward.
Jack fought so hard to get his job back, and now he's going to lose all that and more 😭
Travis giving Emmett the apology his father was never able to give 😭
Yeah, fucking saw that coming. Travis, you idiot.
Hallucination Jack is so mean omg. (Andy, stop being mean to yourself, it's not your fault.)
"I'm gonna be the best damn captain this station has ever seen." I hope so.
OSMAN. DAMN. I am so glad this man made mayor.
Sully is such a romantic when he's not pushing to advance his career.
Carina and Maya are adopting that baby. Of course they're doing it. There's something very fucking wholesome about Carina going with the coworker's name idea and calling him Liam.
Ayy, Jack is awake.

JOY OF TRIVIA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Why do you always smile when I talk to you?” Miss Ball queries Doug [Fairbanks] between takes. "Because I’m a polite little boy,“ he replies. "You Rat” says Lucille coldly.
Tumblr media
The film features the hit song "You Couldn't Be Cuter," written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields.
Tumblr media
The working title of this film was Joy of Loving.
Tumblr media
According to an October 1937 news item, John Barrymore was set for the lead in the production.
Tumblr media
It seems that the entire town of Tulare, California go on board to promote Joy of Living, with a give-away contests and all the local merchants participating.
Tumblr media
On April 16, 1942, a tragic car accident happened outside the Tudor Theatre in New York City where the film was playing. A car plowed into a pole by a drunken driver, killing his passenger. The press flashcubes also captured the ironic marquee in the background as the police attempted to cover the body.
Tumblr media
Ty Garnett's production budget quickly ballooned out of control, topping out at over a million dollars, an astronomical sum for films at that time. Despite the priceless talent, Joy of Living didn't have a chance at recouping its costs and was a financial failure for the studio.
Tumblr media
A publicity photo of Lucille Ball taken for Joy of Living.
Lucille Ball remembered watching the stars and comparing their styles; "Hepburn 'telegraphed,' she said - 'Well, I'm going to be funny' - whereas [Irene] Dunne always surprised, even in repeated takes of the same scene. But I watched her do takes-literally, one day there were thirty-two takes-and twenty-five must have been different. She really worked on how to do that scene. Where Kate would do it the same way every time and telegraph it every time.'"
Tumblr media
The film enjoyed a worldwide release.  Here are film posters for France (left) and Belgium, which include both the Flemish (”Levens Vreugd”) and French titles.
Tumblr media
The film was released on DVD (Warners Archive Collection) on April 20, 2009.

Starkid Act One
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another dreamcast for you all! I thought “I haven’t done a dreamcast for a play in a hot minute.” and then I remembered Act One and got right to work. I watched Act One on the Lincoln Center over quarantine and it was probably the best play I watched while stuck in my home, If you haven’t seen it I’d definitely recommend it.

March 2020 Books
The Hotel under the Sand by Kage Baker (reread)
I really like this one. It reminds me of the Oz books, with perhaps more characterization, and every bit as magical in its own way. Recommended.
The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz by L. Frank Baum (reread)
Rereading these live on Facebook to probably a pitifully small audience, but it’s been enjoyable. Takes me back to reading them to @nerdysk8s and our other sister ages ago. These two books were among the three of the series that I read in early childhood, and I have a special affection for them.
The Secret Garden: Nature’s Magic by Phyllis Bixler
I had ILLed a truckload of literary criticism on The Secret Garden and A Little Princess before Everything Fell Apart, so now I have a huge stack to work through. This one is a comprehensive overview of the state of scholarship on this book and the standard analysis of it. Very enlightening--and thank goodness Bixler isn’t one of those critics who are mad at Burnett for having the audacity to let a male protagonist share the spotlight with her Strong Heroine--but I could have lived without the strangely sexualized interpretation that crept in because gardens and reproduction and preteen girl interacting with boys or something.
A Curse as Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce
Well-written “Rumpelstiltskin” retelling but somehow I didn’t connect with the story and characters.
Heart of the Curiosity by H. L. Burke
Good characters and engaging worldbuilding, and I enjoyed it a lot until around the last chapter, which emphasized the need for change in the heroine’s view of the physical aspect of romance. It wasn’t inappropriate but just not to my taste.
What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge
A girls’ classic that I somehow didn’t get to in childhood. I didn’t miss much. Coolidge is capable of striking, Alcott-like characterization, but the handling of themes of disability was very lacking. You can’t magically cure paralysis by being the Angel In The House, sorry.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (reread)
Recently acquired my own copy (I read my brother’s repeatedly as a child) and relived my childhood. I should be more bothered by Dahl’s kind of mean-spirited retributive view of things, but the characterization is never intended to be deep or psychologically complex, and the story is so much fun that I didn’t care. It struck me this time just how manic the style is! Full of italics! And exclamation points! Dahl scatters them everywhere! But it suits the tone of the book perfectly.
Illusionarium by Heather Dixon
Not as good as her earlier Entwined, and I’m still not sure what to make of it, but there was some freaky creepy stuff going on that’s probably going to haunt me now, so congratulations for effective horror.
The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau (reread)
It’s been forever since I’ve read this. I think I liked it more this time around, and I’d like to try the sequels too.
Half Magic and Magic by the Lake by Edward Eager (reread)
I didn’t always buy the children as the ages they were supposed to be (such dialogue from a six-year-old!), but they were a lot of fun. Very deliberate Nesbitesque.
The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge (reread)
Goudge’s prose is always beautiful, and this book is no exception. Even when not much is really going on, the gorgeous language draws one in; this is an Atmosphere book rather a Plot one, and it works quite well.
A Tale of Time City by Diana Wynne Jones
From what little I’ve read of Jones, she excels at worldbuilding, relatable and/or vivid characters, and convoluted interconnected plot points that all unravel at the end, and this book had all of those things. I’d love to see a (well-done) film-version; there’s a lot of visual potential.
Emily of Deep Valley by Maud Hart Lovelace
I read and loved the first four Betsy-Tacy books as a child but never could connect with the later ones of the series, even as an adult (teenage Betsy tends to be a little too boy-crazy for me to relate to). Although this book is set around the same time and features cameos by Betsy and the rest, I found it much more readable. Emily’s struggles are closer to home, and her personal growth is the focus more than the romance.
Ashes to Fire by Emily B. Martin
I loved this one, possibly even more than Woodwalker. Martin’s characters are so vivid and feel very real, and I’m eager to spend more time with them.
A Little Princess: Gender and Empire by Roderick McGillis
Informative but felt a bit hostile in its assessment of poor Sara--or perhaps that was because of the notes penciled in by some absolute cynic of a previous reader.
Winter by Marissa Meyer
I like Meyer’s characters, for the most part, but this one dragged on and on and on, compared to previous installments. And I’m sorry I keep saying this, but the approach to portraying romance didn’t always work for me because I’m a mutant weirded out by passionate physicality.
The Way to Sattin Shore by Philippa Pearce
While not on a level with Pearce’s excellent Tom’s Midnight Garden, this one has plenty of mystery and atmosphere, and I enjoyed it.
The Fog Diver by Joel Ross
Strong world-building and a fun dynamic among the young protagonists, almost sibling-like. Looking forward to finding the sequel since there are a lot of loose threads still.
The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club and Strong Poison by Dorothy L. Sayers (reread)
Reread to keep up with a podcast. You all know how I feel about this series.

Downton Abbey’s Mrs Hughes tells Over60 what it was like wrapping up season 6  Tuesday, Apr 26 2016  Georgia Dixon "It was only a week ago that Australia said goodbye to the hit British drama Downton Abbey, but one of the show’s stars has hinted that we haven’t seen the last of the Crawleys and the Downton staff. We sat down for a chat with Phyllis Logan, who played beloved housekeeper Mrs Hughes. The relationship between Mrs Hughes and Carson was a focal point in the final two seasons. Were you surprised that the relationship was such a hit with fans? I suppose I was, Jim [Carter, who plays Carson] said everyone kept asking, “When are you and Mrs Hughes going to get together?” I was like, “get together? That’s how you talk about the youngsters of the show, not two old fuddy-duddies like us,” but it’s amazing how people seemed to be drawn to wanting them to develop a relationship. I mean, they had a very nice relationship as it was, they had great mutual respect. Did you see the relationship coming at all? Not really, I thought “nobody’s interested in post-middle-aged love”, but obviously they are, so it’s quite encouraging. What was it like during the final days of filming? Well, a lot of us finished on the same day, the people in the servants’ hall, and there was a whole big scene and it just happened to be our final day. So all of us – Sophie McShera [Daisy], Lesley Nicol [Mrs Patmore], Raquel Cassidy [Miss Baxter] Joanne Froggatt [Mrs Bates] and myself – were like, “Oh, it’s going to be so emotional,” and Jim was batting us off saying “Don’t be so ridiculous, it’s just like any other job, you know, it comes to an end, and yeah it’ll be sad, but you know…” And we were kind of dreading it, but when it did finally come to an end Jim was the first one to crack up, because he made a sort of speech for the crew, and two of the crew members who had been with us since the year dot were hugging each other, inconsolable, and that got him going. And then after we’d all said goodbye to the crew, the girls met outside near hair and makeup and had a big group sob for about 20 minutes. You clearly have a great relationship with the other cast members, have you gotten to see them much since the show ended? Yes, yes I’ve seen quite a few of them since we finished up. Lesley is currently in LA and I was there for a while, as was Joanne, so I caught up with them. I saw Jim and Sophie recently, and Hugh (Lord Grantham) and Laura (Edith). Is there anything you would have liked to see happen or are you happy with how the series wrapped up? I was thinking, “how is Julian [Fellowes, the show’s creator] going to end it?” and when I read the final script, I got quite emotional and I thought, “actually, this is probably as good as he could make it.” So I was pleased and I don’t think there was anything necessarily that was overlooked, apart from – Lesley would say – that she ordered up a boyfriend and never got one. She would’ve been satisfied with a dog but she never even got one [laughs]. There have been a lot of stories recently about actors like Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep speaking out against ageism in the entertainment industry. What are your thoughts on it all? Have you had any challenges like that? It’s difficult to quantify it really, I mean obviously one does feel that as you get older the parts are fewer and there is certainly in Hollywood a huge pressure for women to look 10, 15, 20 years older than they really are in order to keep the momentum of still having a career, whereas, you know, why don’t we all grow old gracefully? There’s less pressure for men, it has to be said, but there is still pressure for them too. What’s next for you? Do you have anything in the works? Well I might be embarking on doing a bit of theatre. I haven’t been in the theatre for several years. I’m looking forward to getting back into it but I’m a bit daunted as well. It’s tough, being in the theatre. People think you just breeze in and you’re only working nights but you only get one take. At least you do get another shot the next performance, that’s what’s so lovely about it, you think “that was crap last night, oh I must try that tomorrow.” But you know, you start thinking about it hours before you’re due in the theatre, especially matinee days, and the amount of energy you have to give is tough. There have been talks of a movie, is that something you’d be interested in getting involved with? Oh, why wouldn’t I be? If they want me in it, I think it would be lovely to have one last hurrah, wouldn’t it? Is there anything you would want to see happen? We could have a baby. We could adopt… we could adopt Thomas [laughs]. I would like to see Daisy, for example, doing something rather magnificent or finding romance, because you know she’s been in widow’s weeds for quite some years now since William died during the First World War so I think she’s due, and she’s still young so she’s due for a nice love match." I don't know if this was posted before but it is a nice interview.😉☺

Every Baby Name We Could Possibly Think Of
Naming your baby is a big decision, and with endless options, it can also be a difficult one. Whether you're going the traditional route or want something more unique (if so, read this first!) it's helpful to have a little, or a lot, of inspiration. Ahead, you'll find nearly every baby name we could think of (close to 1,000!). These aren't just random names we found in a book or concocted ourselves - they're almost all monikers we've heard being used, or we actually know someone who goes by the name. If we missed any, tell us in the comments! #Stageworthy News.
Every year for the past decade, I’ve written a preview guide to the dozen or so annual summer theater festivals in New York. Most have been canceled this year, at least one (New York Musical Festival) permanently. But several have been reimagined. The She NYC Arts festival begins Wednesday, New Ohio Theater’s Ice Factory Festival is offering a full “digital lineup” that begins Friday. Dixon Place’s Hot Festival continues online through August 1. The River to River Festival, created in the aftermath of 9/11 and normally a raft of outdoor performances in the Financial District, is this year reimagined as Four Voices — basically four art installations. The Corkscrew Festival, while postponing its live shows until next summer, announced “Corkscrew 4.0, a curated collection of virtual experiences,” although it’s not clear when these begin.
And — silver lining? — some of the summer theater festivals that would have ended their runs by now are still available online, including Theater for the New City’s Lower East Side Festival of the Arts. Last week, the Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park offered “Richard II” as a four-episode radio drama; it’s now available as a podcast on its website.
It’s worth noting that New York is not alone. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the granddaddy of all modern summer theater festivals, is going online

Amadeus
Historically, “Amadeus” is baloney. Theatrically, it’s a feast. Musically, the National Theatre’s 2016 production of Peter Shaffer’s 1979 play — a recording of which is being streamed online through July 23 — arguably shares something of the same fate as Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri. This “Amadeus” suffers from comparison with the 1984 film directed by Milos Forman, which won eight Academy Awards, including for Best Picture and Best Sound. Perhaps most to the point, the soundtrack of the film Amadeus won the Grammy Award for best classical album in 1985…. Still, under the direction of Michael Longhurst, this “Amadeus” has much to recommend it…
Well that was astonishing. Thank you @Play_PerView, @willarbery, @DanyaTaymor @JebKreager Julia McDermott Michele Pawk, Zoë Winters, John Zdrojeski for#HeroesoftheFourthTurning pic.twitter.com/WMglUsLYxH

We Are Freestyle Love Supreme
So there is Lin-Manuel Miranda, ten years before “Hamilton,” three years before even “In The Heights,” galloping across the street to join his fellow members of Freestyle Love Supreme, a hip-hop improv group, who have just frightened a little girl in a purple coat by spontaneously rapping about her at a bus stop in Greenwich Village….Two observations about that first scene, filmed way back in 2005, of “We Are Freestyle Love Supreme,” a new 80-minute documentary that’s now on Hulu: First, there is something frightening about the talent of this group, who make up rhymes in a rap rhythm on the spot…What this documentary offers is the opportunity to revisit something familiar.
Good As New
In “Good As New,” a funny and pointed 25-minute play that MCC streamed live online, Julianne Moore as Jan is arguing with her daughter Maggie (Kaitlyn Dever) on Maggie’s 16th birthday, while the teenager drives her mother home after plastic surgery. Maggie is “disgusted” at what her mother has done to her face.
“I have no respect for any woman that would allow….”
“Who’s left for you to respect?” Jan interrupts, “This knocks out…” and she lists famous women who have had plastic surgery – Betty Ford, Mary Tyler Moore, Elizabeth Taylor.
Tommy Dorfman
Judith Light
Cherry Jones
Homebound Project 4 Review: Promises with Tommy Dorfman, Cherry Jones, Judith Light, Marquise Vilson…
Tommy Dorfman, in sexy black corset and purple wig, exclaims “I’m a Queen…I’m hot,” does an interpretive dance on the bed, puts on lipstick as if host of a makeup show, plays a tambourine, and curses out someone named Tim – perhaps a jilting lover? Then the telephone rings – it’s Tim, his boss. He takes off his purple wig and changes to his on-the-job voice.
“Assets,” a six–minute play by Diana Oh directed by Lena Dunham, is the funniest of the 11 new monologues in the fourth starry edition of Homebound Project, an online anthology series of original work, whose aim is to raise money for No Kid Hungry, and whose theme for the fourth edition is “promise.” The plays interpret this in various ways.
Book Review: Broadway in the Box: Television’s Lasting Love Affair with the Musical
Before it even opened on Broadway in 1954, the producers of the musical “Peter Pan” had struck a deal with NBC to present it live on television, after its Broadway run, with its cast intact, including the star Mary Martin. It was such a success – 65 million people watched it; one critic marveled at the merging of “the advantages of live theater and live television” – that it was repeated live the following year.
Some six decades later, NBC presented a new “Peter Pan Live!,” created just for broadcast, this time marketed on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where viewers commented in real time during the broadcast, largely with snark, helping to coin the term “hate-watching.” The show was viewed (hatefully or not) by 9.2 million viewers. The lead, Allison Williams, has never performed on Broadway.
But the comparison is not meant as nostalgia for the good old days. “Peter Pan Live!” may have gotten fewer viewers, but it was broadcast in the same decade as a rash of popular television series like “Glee” that were labeled TV musicals. In “Broadway in the Box: Television’s Lasting Love Affair with the Musical” (Oxford University Press, 336 pages), author Kelly Kessler, a professor at DePaul University, attempts to chronicle these two eras and everything in-between
Thanks @NYPL_Theatre‘s @DougReside for presiding over the library’s first virtual theater book club just now. We discussed James Shapiro’s Shakespeare in a Divided America (@penguinpress) For those who missed it, my review of this fascinating book: https://t.co/QYFI3aeju3

The Week in Theater News
New York City reaches Phase 4 in reopening today — “there are no more phases,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “We are all in the final phase of reopening. And that’s great.” — but that doesn’t include theaters….or movie theaters, museums, indoor dining, gyms, or malls. (New York City’s Phase 4, Explained)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art did announce it will reopen August 29, masks required and six-foot distancing
Interesting contrast with the 1918 pandemic ‘Gotham Refuses to Get Scared’: In 1918, NYC Theaters Stayed Open
Instead of closing theaters, health commission Royal Copeland staggered their curtain times, assigning each to a group. The Hippodrome, for example, started at 8 p.m., the Winter Garden at 8:15, the Lyric at 8:30, the Booth at 8:45 and the Belasco at 9.

Black Theater United will hold a Virtual Town Hall, “Our Voices. Our Votes. Our Time.” with Stacey Abrams, Dr. Jeanine Abrams Mclean, moderated by Viola Davis, July 24 at 7 p.m.
Hamilton Star Mandy Gonzalez has written a YA novel, to be published in 2021, which features the ghost of Ethel Merman “Fearless” follows a group of teen performers who must confront the spirit of the Broadway legend.
Playwrights Horizons 2021 season, which will be the company’s 50th and Adam Greenfield’s first as artistic director, includes: Aleshea Harris’s “What to Send Up When It Goes Down,” a ritual-as-play that honors Black lives lost to racialized violence Sylvia Khoury’s “Selling Kabul,” an Afghanistan-set thriller that examines the human cost of immigration policy Dave Harris’s “Tambo & Bones,” described as a “hip-hop triptych” about two characters trapped in a minstrel show and Sanaz Toossi’s dramatic comedy “Wish You Were Here,” which follows best friends who grapple with cultural upheaval amid the Iranian Revolution.
New York Theatre Workshop’s Un-Season
In place of what most theatergoers have come to regard as a “season,” the New York Theatre Workshop — the birthplace of “Rent,” among other landmarks — is offering what you might call a 2020-21 un-season. A programmatic embodiment of the possible, fueled by the percolating brains of more than two dozen playwrights, directors, actors and performance artists. These artistic “instigators” have each been given an initial $2,500 by the Workshop to develop a project over the coming months — and many of the artists will allow audiences to follow along as they build them. For $10 to $125 a month, members gain entree to the instigators’ evolving work, with no guarantee that anything resembling a full stage production will result.
