Pi Omega Pi named among nation’s best chapters
Bloomsburg University’s national business education honors society, Pi Omega Pi, has been named one of the top five chapters for 2017.
Pi Omega Pi strives to encourage an enthusiasm for business education in schools. Scholars aim to provide grades K-12 with accurate and relevant business knowledge to prepare them for their future careers. Inductees must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and must have earned at least 60 credits.
According to chapter member Hannah Schmeck, the society offers students great opportunities.
“It has given us the opportunity to network with others regarding business education and has allowed us to develop lifelong friendships,” Schmeck, a senior business education major said.

Honor Society places in national competition
Bloomsburg University's chapter of Pi Omega Pi recently placed fifth nationally at the honor society’s national competition in Chicago.
Pi Omega Pi is the National Business Education Teacher Honor Society, which has promoted scholarship and service in the area of business education for more than 80 years.
“This experience helped to prepare me for the next step of my professional career by providing me with networks and resources,” said Lindsay Cassel, Pi Omega Pi president. “It gave me the chance to see the struggles that other students in Business Education Programs deal with along with what has helped them.  It also gave me the chance to hear from Business Education Professionals who have been in the program a lot longer than I have.  They were able to give their insight on life and the profession itself. “
Prior to the national competition, each chapter was required to complete three projects-local, state and national related to furthering the profession. The BU chapter redesigned the national website, volunteered at the Pennsylvania Business Education Annual Conference and served as conference assistants at the PA Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference. In addition, students presented a workshop on "Active Learning."
Professors Christina Force and Maggie O’Connor, advisors to the group, also saw the BU chapter win the Participation Award for being the most active chapter at the competition, the only attending to receive the honor.
“Although this was my first conference, I really enjoyed it,” Cassel said. “It was such a great experience, especially receiving 5th place and then the Participation Award. I also was glad it was the same time as the NBEA Conference. My chapter was able to attend the whole NBEA Conference as well, which was a great experience and opportunity as well!”

Pi Omega Pi plans to make history at NBEA Conference
For the first-time ever, the National Business Education (NBEA) Conference is open to students.
It’s a celebratory move for the annual conference honoring its 175th anniversary this spring in Chicago, of which Bloomsburg University’s Pi Omega Pi — a National Business Education Teacher Honor Society — is hoping to be there to see it.
“The week-long experience is full of workshops and activities,” says Bryson Purcell, business education major, club treasurer. “I’m hoping we can gain valuable information to bring back to campus and that the tradition continues to allow future students to participate in this valuable opportunity.”
In addition to more than 70 educational sessions, participants have access to hands-on technology workshops to expand specific skills and introduce new technology. Keynote speakers, the trade show, exhibitor sessions, and networking functions also give participants opportunity to explore new ideas and acquire new skills to serve them in the.
“The NBEA conference is the ‘place to be’ in the world of business education,” Purcell says. “During the one-week conference we are able to network, enhance our professional development, gain new classroom strategies, and see the latest and greatest in the information technology field.”
He adds, “Rather than attending a few state or regional conferences we've decided to save our funding to attend the national convention to see what is up-in-coming within the business education industry.
Pi Omega Pi is accepting donations online, according to Purcell.
“Being a part of a national organization like Pi Omega Pi gives us the opportunity to network with professionals already in the field from around the country,” Purcell says. “... that we otherwise wouldn't have been in touch with allowing us to share ideas, tactics, lessons, and tools to make our classrooms the best they can be.”
