Pimm's Cups
Tumblr media
Ava and I are loving our new flat in Tāmaki Makaurau, so even if we're only here for a few days, we are taking the time to lounge in the sun on the balcony, with beautifully refreshing Pimm's Cups --a classic of Summer cocktails for almost two centuries!-- at arm's length! Cheers!
Ingredients (serves 2):
3 medium Garden Strawberries
1/3 cucumber
1 orange
about 2 or 3 dozens small ice cubes
1/2 large lemon
120 millilitres/4 fluid ounces Pimm's No. 1
chilled Ginger Ale (like Bundaberg's), to top
2 sprigs fresh mint
Rinse the Strawberries, cucumber and orange under cold water. Then, pat them dry.
Halve two of the Strawberries, and cut six thin slices cucumber and two slices orange. Set aside.
Fill two Whisky or Collins glasses to three-quarters with ice cubes.
Thoroughly squeeze lemon juice, and divide between both glasses. Pour Pimm's No. 1 over the ice and lemon juice in each glass, and add an orange slice in each. Top with chilled ginger ale.
Garnish with reserved cucumber slices, Strawberries and mint sprigs.
Enjoy Pimm's Cups immediately, preferably in good company...

New Orleans Cocktail of the Month: Pimm’s Cup The Pimm’s Cup was not born in New Orleans. That honor goes to London, where James Pimm invented it in the 1840s. But it was New Orleans that introduced the drink to the US. It seems that “Uncle Joe” Impasto liked what he tasted on a trip to London in the 1940s, brought it back to his Napoleon House, gave it a Big Easy twist, and the rest is history. Combining Pimm’s No. 1, lemonade, and 7-Up, the Pimm’s Cup is the perfect low-alcohol refresher for those hot New Orleans summer nights – which would make them a perfect drink for Miss Fisher Con 2024! https://www.neworleans.com/drink/cocktails/pimms-cup/

Miss Flighty's Jet Fueled Ginger Cardamom Cocktail Syrup from Alberta Straub on Vimeo.
This recipe for Ginger Cardamom Syrup was created over 5 years ago. Back then there was a much more limited selection of distilled spirits and mixers, only 2 or 3 brands of Ginger Beer were available in San Francisco and even these did not add the spicy hot finish that I wanted for my cocktails. I develop this recipe over time, experimenting with proportion and method. The end result, with a 1:1 ratio sugar to water, and a whole pound of peeled sliced ginger, achieves the bold flavor profile I need to give my gin and whiskey drinks the sophisticated favor I was looking for.
I tried a new way of preparing the ginger since I filmed this episode, its a little time consuming but it brings out the flavor of the ginger even more. After peeling, use the same tool to slice the ginger into wafer thin strips, reduce cooking time and let the mixture sit until developed.
Homemade syrups do not use preservatives and will start to mold in the refrigerator after 2-3 weeks. Store surplus in the freezer, the high concentration of sugar prevents it from freezing solid and its easy to scoop out and use as necessary for home cocktail making.
For recipes using Miss Flighty's Ginger Cardamom Syrup, check out the MaryAnn with Ginger, the Pimm's Cup, the Pear Necessity, the Mac Daddy and the Georgia Julep!

Unveiling the Rich Heritage of Pimm's: A Timeless British Elixir
Tumblr media
Imagine sipping a cool, refreshing concoction that encapsulates the spirit of a British summer. A drink that has stood the test of time, evoking nostalgia and a sense of conviviality. Welcome to the world of Pimm's, the quintessentially English beverage that has enchanted generations with its unique blend of flavors and its rich history. The story of Pimm's dates back to the mid-19th century when James Pimm, a farmer's son from Kent, London, set up a shellfish bar in the city. It was in this oyster house that Pimm began serving a secret blend of gin, quinine, and a proprietary mixture of herbs, creating what would eventually become known as Pimm's No. 1 Cup. This original concoction was touted for its distinctive taste and its ability to aid digestion. As word of Pimm's elixir spread, its popularity surged, leading to the opening of more Pimm's Oyster Houses across London. However, it wasn't until 1859 that Pimm's No. 1 was officially bottled and sold for retail consumption, marking the birth of an iconic brand that would soon become synonymous with British summer gatherings and social events. The early 20th century witnessed the introduction of various Pimm's 'cups,' each denoted by a number, including Pimm's No. 2 (Scotch whisky-based), No. 3 (brandy-based), No. 4 (rum-based), and No. 5 (rye-based). However, it was Pimm's No. 1 Cup that gained unparalleled fame and became the go-to beverage for garden parties, regattas, and Wimbledon, firmly establishing itself as a symbol of British leisure and sociability. Pimms Cup Cocktail Over the years, Pimm's has evolved into a versatile drink, often served with a mix of lemonade, fresh fruit, cucumber, and mint, creating the beloved Pimm's Cup cocktail. Its refreshing and aromatic taste has made it a staple in the British drinking culture, enjoyed not only during summer but also as a year-round favorite for those seeking a taste of tradition and a touch of English elegance. Today, Pimm's continues to hold its position as a beloved classic, transcending generations and cultures, with its distinctive blend of flavors and its ability to bring people together. Whether it's a garden party, a picnic in the park, or a sophisticated social gathering, Pimm's remains a symbol of conviviality, relaxation, and the joy of shared moments. As we raise our glasses filled with the fruity, herb-infused nectar, let us raise a toast to James Pimm, the visionary behind this timeless British elixir that continues to capture hearts and palates, embodying the spirit of conviviality and the essence of British tradition. Here's to the enduring legacy of Pimm's—a drink that has withstood the tides of time and continues to weave its magic into the fabric of British culture and beyond. From his time on VH1's Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party to his bestselling book of soul food recipes, “From Crook to Cook,” Snoop Dogg has shown us that he can get down in the kitchen.
Now, the D.O.-Double-G. is back with a follow-up to his successful cookbook debut – and this time, he brought a friend along. “Snoop Dogg Presents Goon with the Spoon” is a collab with Bay Area rapper Earl “E-40” Stevens, a.k.a “The Goon with the Spoon.” The book features over 65 recipes for every meal, along with colorful photos inspired by both rappers’ favorite recipes...and, of course, their mutual California love.
“E-40 is my big homie, my brother, my mentor. He paved the way for me on the West Coast,” Snoop said in a statement shared with The Root. “Watching him expand his love for food and cooking over the years to his many successful businesses is some boss-level shit. Which is why ‘Snoop Dogg Presents Goon With the Spoon’ had to be the next cookbook, ya dig?”
Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Mac ’n’ Cheese Bites, Cognac Mashed Potatoes and Purple Popsizzles are just a few of their creative takes on classic dishes and drinks.
So if you’re looking to add a little Cali flavor to your holiday menu, Snoop shared a couple of recipes from the book with us:
Ridin’ Dirty Shrimp ’n’ Grits
Tumblr media
Shrimp and grits are a Southern staple, so this recipe is sure to be a favorite at your holiday brunch.
“We like to add a little crunch to our shrimp and grits, so make sure to fry that bacon hard!” Snoop says.
For The Grits
1 tbsp unsalted butter
1 cup [140 g] stone-ground grits (not instant)
2 cups [480 ml] low-sodium chicken broth
1 cup [240 ml] whole milk
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup [80 g] shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
For The Shrimp
4 slices bacon (not thick cut), cut crosswise into 1/2 in. [13 mm] pieces
1 lb [455 g] 21/25-count shrimp, peeled and deveined
3 green onions, thinly sliced, with 1 Tbsp dark green parts reserved for garnish
2 tsp hot sauce, preferably Crystal
Salt and cracked black pepper
To Make The Grits
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the grits and cook until lightly toasted for about 2 minutes. Add the chicken broth, milk and salt. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring to a boil.
Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thick and creamy for 30 to 40 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the cheese. Cover to keep warm.
To Cook The Shrimp
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the bacon and cook until browned and crisp, 7 to 8 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking. Meanwhile, line a large plate with paper towels. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to the paper towel–lined plate. Discard all but 1 tbsp of the fat from the skillet.
Increase the heat to medium-high and add the shrimp and the green onions. Cook until the shrimp is pink and opaque throughout for 4 to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in the bacon and hot sauce, and season with salt and pepper.
Ladle the grits into individual bowls and top with the shrimp. Garnish with the reserved green onions and serve.

Hi, my loves and welcome to WiccaNow. I’ve been covering some of the Sabbat recently, like these posts on Imbolc, Imbolc symbols and Imbolc altars as well as this post on Samhain. I’ve also started talking about Ostara, and I’ve shared my favourite ritual along with some fun altar decorations for you to try out. Today I want to share a little more about the Spring Equinox by sharing my favourite Ostara recipes! For me Ostara is all about creating balance, stimulating joy, allowing myself space to foster creativity and new ideas or dreams and enjoying the start of the warmer seasons that are coming. I like to celebrate by watching the sunrise; although I have to admit that there have been occasions when I haven’t managed to make it out of bed because I am definitely not a morning person. Anyone else feel like this could be their morning spirit animal? When I celebrate, I like to make a picnic-style brunch/lunch/dinner. I say brunch/lunch/dinner because you can make the same sorts of recipes for all 3 meals. There is something really frivolous and fun (’tis the season after all) about having a picnic on your living room floor at 10pm, eating ricotta pikelets covered in jam and cream while sipping a Pimms cup without a care in the world. I would recommend this to anyone, release your inner child and roll with it! Before you keep reading all about my favourite Ostara recipes, take a sec to check out this beautiful grimoire we’ve created. It’s filled with all of our personal tips and tricks and includes some of our favourite rituals and spells. Check it out now or keep scrolling to see read all about our Ostara recipes! Ostara Recipes Below are a selection of my favourite Ostara recipes. They are in no particular order and you can make any or all of them. As I said, picnic-style is really fun, and if the weather is nice you can even head out to the park for an outdoor picnic. If not, move your furniture to the side, find a blanket, grab your picnic basket and get ready to camp out on the living room/bedroom floor! Build a fort if you want, watch a movie (I can recommend anything by Studio Ghibli for this occasion), play some board games or do something that reminds you of being a carefree, playful child. Studio Ghibli films are such a joy to watch. The aesthetics are gorgeous I love that they aren’t just kids movies. Ostara recipe #1 Devilled Eggs This is a super dividing dish. I think either you love them or you hate them. They definitely fit Ostara though, hence why they’re on the list. This recipe makes 12 portions. Scale it up or down depending on how many people you have to feed. If you want to make these extra festive, soak the boiled eggs in the juice from a tin of beetroot overnight. They go a super pretty pink colour. Ingredients 6 organic eggs 3 tbsp mayonnaise 1 ½ tsp dijon mustard 1 tsp apple cider vinegar  2 tbsp finely chopped chives Salt and pepper to taste Paprika to garnish Method Hard boil your eggs. Depending on the size of your eggs, the time will change a little. For small eggs, 9 minutes should do it and for large eggs, it can take as long as 15 minutes. I normally do mine for around 12, I hate when they get grey yolks so I try to avoid this with the shorter boiling time. Allow the eggs to cool then peel and ½ them. If you want pink eggs, boil the eggs a day ahead and soak them (whole) in the juice from a tin of beetroot overnight. Scoop the yolks out of the eggs. Mash the yolks together with the mayo, mustard, vinegar, chives and salt and pepper. If you prefer your eggs a little spicy, you could add a small dash of tabasco here too. Scoop or pipe the yolk mixture back into the hardboiled egg whites. Sprinkle a little paprika on top for extra colour. Enjoy! This is how my eggs end up looking, just with a little more chives in them. Ostara Recipe #2 Jalapeno Scones Scones are such a traditional picnic food! This is one of my favourite
Ostara recipes, the pickled jalapenos add a great kick and I always make them small enough that you can have at least 2. Ingredients 280g flour 15g baking powder 3g salt 120g cold butter, cut into small cubes 190mL milk 120g sharp cheddar, grated (I’ve had the wrong type of cheese many times, use what you have if you don’t have cheddar). 75g feta cheese 100g pickled jalapenos, roughly chopped Pepper Dangerous because you might end up eating 2, or in my case more… Method Preheat the oven to 200 celsius. Sieve the flour and baking powder together and add the salt. Add the butter to the flour and cut it in with a pastry cutter. You can also do this in the food processor if you have one. I don’t actually own a pastry cutter, so I use 2 knives instead, which also works. Mix until all the butter is in small pieces and the flour is starting to look crumbly. Try not to use your hands as you don’t want to warm the butter too much. Add ¾ of the grated...   Click here to read this complete article. I’m Kind of a Pimm Deal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I went to a farmer’s market. I was thinking initially that I didn’t really need anything. Boy was I wrong. I picked up some lovely strawberries and a cucumber with the intention of drinking them in some form (at least if the strawberries made it home without being eaten).
I remembered several Pimm’s Cup cocktails I’ve had at some point, and the bounty of fruit and vegetables involved made me want to do a riff of sorts. Something involving my slightly aged bottle of Pimm’s, anyways. And I decided to add a bit of rose liqueur for that lovely floral springtime note.
Anyways, during the process of carefully throwing amounts into the shaker, I found out the top to my celery bitters (the plastic bit that makes it dash rather than splash) was missing. So I currently have no idea how much celery bitters actually made it into the drink, but the celery didn’t overpower everything so that was the best sort of outcome I could hope for.
This is a light, refreshing, cool drink, perfect for sitting outside in the sweltering humidity that is passing for summer at the moment, and contemplating all the wonderful green.
Also, couldn’t decide which photo to use, so here’s both of the finalists. Second one was more of a spur of the moment shot when I saw light shining through it. The shot with the flower is also nice, in my opinion.
-----
3 slices cucumber 2 strawberry, quartered 6 mint leaves 1/2 oz lime juice 1/2 oz rose liqueur 1.5 oz Pimm’s No. 1 Celery bitters Soda water
Equipment: muddler, shaker, strainer Glass: rocks or Collins Garnish: cucumber wheel, lime wheel, strawberry, mint sprig
Muddle the cucumber, strawberry, and mint in the shaker. Add the lime juice, rose liqueur, Pimm’s, celery bitters, and ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into a glass with ice and top with soda water. Garnish.

Unveiling the Rich Heritage of Pimm's: A Timeless British Elixir

Imagine sipping a cool, refreshing concoction that encapsulates the spirit of a British summer. A drink that has stood the test of time, evoking nostalgia and a sense of conviviality. Welcome to the world of Pimm's, the quintessentially English beverage that has enchanted generations with its unique blend of flavors and its rich history. The story of Pimm's dates back to the mid-19th century when James Pimm, a farmer's son from Kent, London, set up a shellfish bar in the city.
