Hey! I know people use the word “dinosaur” for a lot of things that aren’t actually technically dinosaurs, and I was wondering what the actual terminology for those “dinosaurs” who aren’t dinosaurs is?
Depends what they are, of course!
For “pterodactyls” - the non-dinosaur flying reptiles of the mesozoic - it’s “Pterosaurs”.
(Pteranodon by Matt Martyniuk - perhaps the most famous pterosaur)
For the permian beasties like Dimetrodon, the best terms are things like “protomammal”, “stem-mammal” or (if you wanna get fancy) “non-mammalian synapsid”.
(Dimetrodon by Nobu Tamura)
There’s also a whole host of mesozoic marine reptiles. These include plesiosaurs (which themselves include “pliosaurs”).
(Plesiosaurus fossil (public domain))
Another group of sea reptiles were the Ichthyosaurs.
(Ichthyosaurus by Nobu Tamura)
The last major group of creatures commonly mistaken for dinosaurs are mosasaurs, and for once the -saur ending is accurate, since these actually were lizards!
(Platycarpus by Dmitry Bogdanov)
