Free Crochet Patterns For Palestine

So I wanted to wait till I had at least a few patterns out before posting about this here, but hey! If you're a crocheter (and not a zionist piece of shit) here's a cool thing for you to do to show support for Palestine!

I've been creating and releasing free, watermelon themed patterns for crocheters to enjoy, and if you want to chuck a couple bucks toward the project, I've made an associated Ko-fi page, 100% of which goes (and has gone) to donations.

The first month's funds went to @fairuzfan HelpGazaChildren fundraiser, the receipts for which you can see here in the first (and so far only) gallery post on the Ko-fi page (I also personally donated $50 again last week, as well as $50 previously to PCRF)

The second month, I price matched Ko-fi donations up to $150, so $100 went to UNRWA, and the other $100 went to Maryam's gofundme which, at the time of the donation, was highlighted in the Operation Olive Branch spreadsheet (receipts are on my Instagram collated in highlight tabs at the top of my profile)

If you want these and future patterns, you can find them for free on my Patreon. They're public posts, no I do not want you to subscribe to my Patreon, I just don't have a personal website or know of any free pattern hosting sites to put these on (I refuse to use Ravelry for anything more than the bare basics, the UI makes me want to puke, and idk how to upload directly to their database, only to upload via external links.) Ribblr has pissed me off one too many times, so that's out, too, plus, again, can't trust they wouldn't nuke the patterns. The only caveat to this is you have to have a regular Patreon account to see the posts, but they're not paywalled! Alternatively, just shoot me an email at chiaroscurosity.shop@gmail.com and I'll email you the PDF(s), just lemme know which one(s) you want.

hello hello! after months of promising myself I would get around to learning how to use your patterns, I've done it- thanks so much for all your patterns being excellently formatted and easy to understand, that is no mean feat!

are the pattern collections on your website in US dollars or Canadian dollars? I had so much fun with the free patterns avaliable I want to make as many as possible, but since I'm not American or Canadian I need to covert prices, especially seeing as most of the pattern collections I'm interested in are pay-what-you-can (not a problem, but I really don't want to undervalue your work by paying something I think is fair but only turns out to be a very small sum after currency changes)

Thank you for the kind words and very good question! To answer it succinctly: at this time (2024/10/21) prices on the Gumroad store, including prices you name yourself, should be in US dollars by default and then automatically converted to your home currency on checkout. (If that's *not* the case please tell me!)

Thank you also for giving me a chance to talk through my attempt at sliding-scale pricing, which I worry is stressful and off-putting, however well-intentioned it might be!

All pattern collections have a minimum price (in USD). I set that price, and on free patterns it's set to $0. You can't pay me an "unfair" sum (in any currency) because the interface will not let you.

(If any aspect of "pay-what-you-can" stresses out or irritates you, that's the price! Read no more.)

On most collections, that minimum price is half of a "cover price"—US$10 on average, or about $1/motif, depending on the size and complexity of the patterns. I think that's a "fair" price—if anything, I worry about undercutting finished-object pattern writers, who would normally charge much more on a per-motif basis. But "fair" is not the same as "accessible" or "fun."

If full cover is no hardship, terrific! I'll take it! A lot of people have too much money! But if the minimum (or anything in between) better suits your context, budget or level or commitment, you'll get no judgment from me!

A a heads up I *will* be raising the low end of the sliding scale soon (from 50% to 2/3 of cover price, most likely) because the current pricing scheme isn't quite fair to my small handful of subscribers.

Because—heaven help us—there *is* still a subscription option. I've taken it off the main page while I get caught up on releases, but it's still available via that link. US$12/month gets you access to all patterns plus new ones as they are released, at a pace of roughly 2 collections per month. You lose "vault access" when your subscription ends, but you keep any PDFs you've downloaded.

As a final program note, I want to apologize to anyone who made a purchase while I still had tipping enabled! I had just kind of yeah-sure approved that whenever the option became available, not thinking how positively barbaric it would be to ask someone to name a price and then tack 20% onto it that they have to manually remove! Hideous! Poor form! I'm sorry! Since resolved!

oh wonderful! thank you uhhhhhh ok first ask just to make things clear. you arnt balling your hands up tight when knitting right? or like sorry to ask but how you hold your needles? im asking cause holding them wrong or your hands too tight can lead to pains and thingies. idk idk but like, knowing ways to try and stretch and hold stuffs to avoid pains is inportant and good to know- plus idk what exactly can give? umm oh also love crafts and raverly are great places to get free pdfs of patterns and if you dont mind smell too much you can get some pretty decent yarn at thrift stores yee- also if may ask what you working on rn? just curious ya

Crochet patterns

The crochet patterns are all for softies/amigarumi. No clothes or bags. All the patterns are free. Forefront- Art Bibles

Around the time I was doing the illustration, I started to prepare the document for pre-production research. I chose to use Canva due to its variety of desgins, easy customizing and being a free site was a plus point.

As inspiration, I started to look into past students work, and also games art bibles. Art bibles are usually way more concept art heavy than our task, and there is always a team behind it so the content is much more and more packed. Nevertheless, they are a good starting point for things such as layouts, images, etc.

One art bible that I really like is for Alice: Asylum. While the project got cancelled, the author released the pdf for free, and it can be seen how visual evertyhing is. The images usually take center piece and the attention for most of the pages, although sometimes there are also some pages with dense information, a balance between the two is important.

For my pdf, my character was this elegant mafia character, so I thought of keeping it sleek and simple, following her own color palette of white and green. I was also inspired by fashion magazines so I would try go for that sort of aesthetics. For decorative purposes I also did a quick drawing on some of her patterns to decorate the background.

For the font, I decided to go with a more formal classy one to show off more of her character, and her mafia affiliation.

Ooo that is a lot of FANTASTIC information, I pulled up a document and got to work taking notes. I'll have to spend some time sorting it out into a handy reference sheet but even as-is this will help a lot.

I'm really glad I asked because this includes a lot of details that I wouldn't even know to ask, like the acidic/neutral/alkaline distinctions between forests. Between that and the wet/dry divide, now I can look at a map of around where the characters are and sus out roughly what they're looking at. It really does take away a lot of the stress when

Better yet, it gives me options so I can pick some possible environments to suit what I need in the story. Like choosing a wet forest if I need treacherous terrain, or a Celtic Rainforest to enhance the splendor of a moment.

Best of all, this gives me a vocabulary of things that I can then look up references for, and a bank of plants and animals I can pull up to add life to a scene.

One thing I've really struggled with in this story has been giving the region its own distinct feel compared to other woodlands. Which is doubly important since the entire story revolves around people desperately trying to save it (and their culture) from being destroyed by colonization and conquest.

That section was pretty thorough, so I'll have to digest it for a while before I've got more questions there.

Anyway, getting into more specific comments, as well as the map, below:

I may or may not have made the Fells (Fantasy Wales) something like five times as large as its real counterpart. Here is more specifically the Fells, with the three big rivers named (I assume there are many more rivers and small lakes, these are just major ones) and the historic realms of the Fells marked out

I've tentatively named some broader regions, but I'm not confident about those just yet. Red dots denote major cities. The yellow line is where the old empire's borders were - those five Fellish realms are still fully under foreign rule, with four more ruled by Marcher Lords, which is just more tenuous foreign rule.

Let me know how I did with the geography and such! I've done a lot of free time studying and took a college course about it, but things like the effects of ocean currents and wind patterns always tripped me up. Anyway, I'm glad I ended up pretty close with Old Man Ash. I think he would be fine with the informal version - the other name he gets called in the story is Grandad, so I get the sense he cares more about people being comfortable in his presence than formality. Although keep me updated on if your inlaws have a different opinion - I'll need to contact my editor to update the PDF, so I'd rather do that just once. With what you said about broadleaves being exclusively what makes up the old growth forests, I wonder if that would mean that all Dagfolk would be based on broadleaves? 🧐 Since I'm sending pictures, here is the (now properly named) Hynafwr Onn:

I am delighted that you bring up bards because I made the main character a Fellish bard by the name of Llywela ferch Marared. She plays a crwth and I like to have her make subtle references to Welsh songs like Sebona Fi and Yma O Hyd. I gave her uncommonly red hair to imply a connection with Annwyn.

(I realize that's not the usual spelling of Annwn, but I chose it so I wasn't directly cribbing mythology and making it harder for people to learn about those myths) I also have some commissioned art of Llywela, plus the Lady of the Lake and the Merlin analogue, for what it is worth. You mentioned faeries with the peat bogs. I don't think faeries will be making a huge appearance in this story (mostly just one knight), but I'd be glad to hear about Welsh-specific faerie lore if you've got it on hand.

You also said that cheeses were a big Welsh cultural touchstone. Are there Welsh specific varieties that you can tell me about? And what sort of dishes are they made into?

Also on that train of thought, you mentioned a plant that flavors mead - would that be the go-to alcohol of choice, or are there others floating around? Both for a lord's table and what you might find in an inn.
