As troublesome as Gotham can be, Pauli's is one of those places that rarely gets hit. It's open 24/7 and offers good food to all regardless of who they are and Pauli isn't afraid to hire former criminals like Jerry who used to be muscle for Scarface. Petty thugs who threaten the place for cash are just as likely to receive backlash from their fellow crooks as they would from law-abiding citizens because where else are you going to get a decent meal at 4am?

I just read “A Tale of Two Cities” and here are my impressions.
The beginning somehow didn´t get me. Maybe all that setup and direct descriptions of people... But it was the same with Les Mis (my fave) and the bishop’s fucking everyday life that delayed me from reading. Well, I guess classics are allowed to infodump (so unfair).
But the culmination and ending were so exciting and full of action that I dragged my pocketbook around the school today; I read all the time, mostly during the lessons, and almost teared up in history class. I’m sure you will too.
Sydney Carton is the best boy and a goddamn hero. Someone give him a hug. His life is fucked up, his law career is a failure and he drinks the pain away; he has so many missed opportunities and so much envy for the successful, pretty people... but he still does his best for the ones he loves. He’s like, the Eponine/Grantaire. He’s depressed af (which makes him look cynic and rude at times) and can’t see any hope to change his life. And he’s in love with Lucie, but doesn’t see himself worthy of her... ugh, love this dude.
If someone deserves to be guillotined, this is Stryver. The guy in whose shadow Carton has always been. He’s arrogant, bitchy, proud, bossy and always gets the credit. Plus, he’s an awful pragmatic who only cares  about success. I hate him so much.
Dr. Manette is the Jean Valjean of this book (spent a hell lotta time in prison, kind and strong person and father, ptsd). He’s a very cool and epic character (having in mind in what a stade he was at the beginning)...
His daughter Lucie is STRONG and BEAUTIFUL. She’s the one holding everyone together and even when she’s afraid (which is most of the time) she finds the power to hold herself together for the sake of her family. She’s not what you’d call a tough girl but her love, genuinity, gentleness and hope help her through the obstacles.
Charles Darnay is cool but he seems a little too perfect to me. idk.
Mme. Defarge is one of the most badass antagonists ever. She has a convincing backstory and a very strong charisma. She’s a local revolutionary leader alongside her husband and wants to kill all the aristocrats and their supporters because of how they wronged her family in the past. Life has hardened her and she’s unable of mercy. Also she knits the names of the ones she deems worthy of death which gives me HUGE LIGHT YAGAMI VIBES. We need female villains like that who don´t need to fuck the way to the top like Cersei Lannister, Cathy from “East of Eden”, Milady from “The Three Musqueteers” did. The ones I counted are actually cool and there is nothing wrong with them, but I feel the playboy bitch has become a cliché. Mme. Defarge is directly strong and intimidating, not hiding under a sexy and feminine mask.
Jerry Cruncher is a piece of trash and an abuser. At least he changes near the end.
Mr. Laurie is legitimately a hobbit. Conservative, practical, content with his own little life. He’s the closest family friend to the Darnays and his pragmatism, loyalty and management skills help them a lot.
Plus, I mostly agree with the book’s view of the revolution because it shows the human and everyday side of it. If we look at it through the eyes of the royals, it would be labelled as evil; if the revolutionaries were talking about it, it’d look heroic and glorious. I love keeping it on an everyday level is.
