Art for Pocketful of Soul: Lan Wangji

AHHHHHH I can finally post this!

Chapter 29 of Pocketful of Soul is up, and as a treat to myself, I commissioned @procoffeinating to do two pictures. The first was Mo Xuanyu with the ghosts of the Wen Remnants and was stunning. This one made me cry.

Image description: Lan Wangji (recognizable as the version from The Untamed as played by Wang Yibo) sits in a sunbeam in a clearing in a dark forest in Qinghe, playing guqin to a group of spirits he is putting to rest, while wearing A-Yuan, asleep, on his back in a traditional Chinese baby carrier.

This type of carrier is a red square of cloth with straps on all four corners. In the image we can see the straps coming forward over LWJ's shoulders and under his arms, gathered together in a twist/knot on his chest.

The infant (about six months old) has very fat cheeks and a few strands of hair caught in his hand. The spirits are translucent, colorless, faded, and listening intently. Lan Wangji glows, both with the sunbeam's light and spiritual energy.

So, the assignment I gave Procoffeinating was almost exactly that image description. Literally the day before the draft was sent to me (draft, ha, it was almost exactly this finished!) I'd spent some time seeing what I could get out of Dall-E for a similar prompt. Honestly? while the results were hilarious and disturbing, I regret NOTHING about paying Procoffeinating to get the exact image I wanted.

I'm so sorry. And no, I don't think Procoffeinating has anything to worry about in terms of competition.

Speaking of which: This fanfic is a prompt fill for Fandom Trump Hate, and raised money for the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund. I also decided to help support two artists by commissioning works. I'd like them to get more support, because while I paid with bonuses to both artists for doing such a good, comprehensive job with my requests, both can use more support.

Also, I really want to do more art for this story. It could have art between scene breaks, or for each chapter, or for the various talismans. And I'd really like to raise more money to support things I care about.

Talking to my ghosts?” He sounds indignant. “Perhaps you should ask him,” Wen Qing says dryly. “Kid, why are you using demonic cultivation?” Wei Wuxian asks. “It works better when you want to work with spirits, rather than fight them,” Mo Xuanyu says. “And I’m not using demonic cultivation, I merely greeted your spirit and told him I was a friend and needed to talk to you. Well, something to that effect. Intention matters more than intonation with this stuff.” “Who taught you that?” Wei Wuxian asks, his voice shifting from indignation to intrigue. “You did,” Mo Xuanyu says. “Or well, your notes did, hmmm… five or six years from now.” Wei Wuxian wags a scolding finger at him and says, “You should be developing your golden core, not dabbling around with things you don’t under—Did you say five years from now? As in, in the future?” OR: What if instead of Sacrifice Summon, Mo Xuanyu discovered Wei Wuxian’s flawed time travel talisman? A Mo Xuanyu-centric found family time travel looping epic. Fic is complete, posting frequently (2-3 times per week for the next several months.)

Remember back in 2016 when I wrote a Big Bang thing for Merlin and I got randomly paired with @procoffeinating and the art was 100% amazeballs?

Well, after spending a couple months writing 180k worth of story for Pocketful of Soul, a CQL-based, Mo Xuanyu-centric time travel story, I decided to reward myself by commissioning art. There are three pieces, this is the first.

This is from Chapter 3, and depicts Mo Xuanyu holding a hand out to Jiang Yanli's ghost, while Wen Qing looks on. They're surrounded by the spirits of the Wen Remnants. They are in a field near Nightless City and you can see the Fire Palace in the background.

Jiang Yanli has one hand full of pieces of Wei Wuxian's shattered, scattered soul.

I am absolutely enchanted by the depiction of Mo Xuanyu, wearing WWX's robe that is a little too big, a little baggy, a little tattered, his face softer, a little rounder in the cheeks and chin, but still closely resembling WWX. It was possibly the most challenging part of the assignment, to make him look different but not-too-different. This is forever what my mental image of him will be.

Anyway, Procoffeinating, as always, understood the assignment absolutely perfectly.

Because this work was for Fandom Trumps Hate, and I not only wanted Procoffeinating's specifically amazing art, but I wanted to use this to help directly support several artists related to causes dear to my heart, I'm asking that if you like this or other of Procoffeinating's work, and you are able, that you go offer some kofi love. If you do, let me know via DM here or on Twitter how much you gave, and I'll match that with some more art for the story. Even tiny donations will get something from me, I have a very long list of places small art could be added. I hit an alt text limit, for those who are using screen readers, in addition to everything mentioned in the alt text, over this misty, moody image, on the left side, is a hazy lighter panel (it only covers someone in a dark robe seen from the waist down, it was a requested title space). And over that panel is the title, Pocketful of Soul in a font that seeps black curling tendrils like resentful energy, limned in red. Under it, in a less curly but still decorative font (think rapid brush strokes, almost cursive, kind of pointy, with long downward strokes but minimal ornamentation) in a drop-shadowed black, it says "by Jenrose, art by Procoffeinating."

I highly recommend trawling through @procoffeinating's Tumblr for amazing art in many fandoms. Just keep going, there's Merlin and Good Omens in there, among other things. Twitter has some newer stuff.

Pocketful of Soul & The Bourbon

The Bourbon has become one of the few venues where Pocketful of Soul can really unleash their musical influences, skills and passion. One of the few venues where in one night we can play Jill Scott, Dangelo, Janet Jackson and within the same night play Montell Jordan, Blackstreet and Pharrell.

With the crowd being the driving force behind the spontaneous musical decision that regularly take place on what we like to call an "intimate" stage. You never know what will happen when we play a gig at The Bourbon, sometimes we don't even know. But one thing we can guarantee is great food coupled with great music.

Pocketful of Soul & Opera Bar

With 2013 bringing Pocketful of Soul to Opera Bar for the first time, neither party knew how fun, different and soul packed it would be. Pocketful of Soul's first gig saw a 'dance floor' packed with people shoulder to shoulder, singing our songs to us and dancing as if it was a nightclub. Three days later Pocketful of Soul found themselves a spot on the  world renowned and coveted Opera Bar New Years Eve Beach Party event. Since then Pocketful of Soul has been lucky enough to be on regular rotation at Sydney's premier venue.

Be sure to look out for us in 2014 playing our old skool, rnb, neo soul and funk tunes at the Opera Bar.

Halloween 2013 @ The Bourbon Sydney

When you think Halloween, Australia is the last place you think of, but this year The Bourbon showed Sydney how Halloween is done. From the cobweb covered ceiling to the day of the dead faces of the staff you could not help but want to be part of this usually uncelebrated holiday in Sydney.

Pocketful of Soul or on this night, Surgeons who weren't the best with a scalpel (as the blood splatter all over our scrubs suggested), injected their soul into everyone else's. Here are some pictures from the soul spooking night.
