We couldn’t skip the beautiful Praça Don Pedro IV since we stayed in a hotel on the plaza.
The Rossio is the popular name of the King Pedro IV Square (Praça de D. Pedro IV) in the city of Lisbon and has been one of its main squares since the Middle Ages. It has been the setting of popular revolts and celebrations, bullfights and executions, and is now a preferred meeting place of Lisbon natives and tourists alike.
The current name of the Rossio pays homage to to Pedro IV, King of Portugal. The Column of Pedro IV is in the middle of the square. Most buildings around the Rossio date from the reconstruction of the Pombaline Downtown carried out after the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which levelled most structures in the area.
I noticed a water fountain very similar to the Parisian Wallace fountains.

Rossio Railway Station, Lisbon (No. 1)
The Rossio Railway Station (Portuguese: Estação de Caminhos de Ferro do Rossio) is a railway station in Lisbon, Portugal, located in the Rossio square. The station was formerly known as Estação Central (Central Station) and that designation still appears in its façade. Trains gain access to the station, which is in the central urban area of Lisbon, through a tunnel which is over 2.9 km (1.8 mi) long.
The station was commissioned by the Portuguese Royal Railway Company and was designed between 1886 and 1887 by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro. It was built in one of the most important squares of Lisbon, the Rossio, and connected the city to the region of Sintra.
The tunnel was excavated under the city and is considered one of the most important works of engineering in Portugal dating from the 19th century. It was completed in 1890, and soon after Lisbon's Circle Line with a connection to the North Line also opened. The station became Lisbon's main passenger terminus until 1957, from that date only a few long-distance trains terminated at Rossio, mainly West Line services, until the early 1990s.
Sidónio Pais, the fourth President of Portugal, was assassinated in Rossio Station in December 1918.
The station was closed to rail services from 22 October 2004 until 12 February 2008 due to tunnel renewal work.

On the 1st November 1755 a violent earthquake, followed by equally devastating fires, destroyed the centre of Lisbon. The Royal Palace, the House of India, aristocratic palaces, the Opera House that was still under construction, art and royal treasures were all irreversibly lost. ⚜ From the ruins of medieval Lisbon came a zone redesigned along modern and functional lines. The whole project became linked up to the will and pragmatism of the all-powerful Marquis of Pombal, minister to José I. He set about the swift implementation of a redevelopment project drawn up by Carlos Mardel and Eugénio dos Santos. In the wake of the cataclysmic destruction, the first priority was to rehouse people and get mercantile trading restarted. To do this, it was necessary to rebuild rapidly. ⚜ The Lisbon dating from the second half of the 18th century was set down according to geometric pattern, a grid on which buildings were built. They were provided with a "cage-like" anti-earthquake system. This was a system of crossed wooden beams over which the walls were built. The construction was totally revolutionary for the time as it was the first time a system of mass production was applied to housing with the standardisation of certain details: the windows, the verandas on the first floor, the steps and inner areas covered with layers of tiles. ⚜ The "Downtown" of Lisbon, or "Pombaline Downtown", as it is also known in honour of Pombal, is not characterised by the ornamentation of its buildings, it rather represents a new social order that emphasised the trading and financial classes. However, to more than counterbalance this, there is the harmony of the effect, the perpendicular streets with many a view down to the Tagus, the traditional stores and interesting monuments. Any wander through the very heart of Lisbon certainly proves to be a most pleasant experience. 🇵🇹 #dronephotography #drone #aerialphotography #aerial #photography #landscapephotography #travel #city #lisbon #lisboa #visitportugal #europe #lisboaportugal #visitlisboa #visitlisbon #lisboalovers #lissabon #lisbona #lisbonne #architecture #marquesdepombal #pombalina #downtown #pombaline #streetphotography #cityviews (at Lisbon, Portugal) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-2fco-HQof/?igshid=jrmneyn1bh4d

The Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) situated near the Tagus river, is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira (Royal Ribeira Palace) until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodeled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown, ordered by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #photowalks #photowalkslisboa #photowalkspt #phototours #photographytour #tourphotographer #lisbonphotographytours #streetphotographyinternational #bnwcaptures #bnw_mycitylife #bnwgramers #bnw_focus_on #lisbonportugal #lisbonworld #lisbonstreets #architecturephotographer #bnw_city_streetlife #street_is_life #street_ig #street_photo #streetsoflisbon #streetphotographymagazine #streetphotographyworldwide #streetphotographyhub #travellisbon #visitlisboa #visitlisbon 📷 @miguelangelosilva (at Praça do Comércio) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7L1jh5HEQz/?igshid=t6x5h3r7k0te

Rossio, Lisbon (No. 4)
From the Pombaline reconstruction dates the Bandeira Arch (Arco da Bandeira), a building at the south side of the square with a baroque pediment and a big arch that communicates the Rossio with the Sapateiros Street. The Rossio became linked to the other main square of the city, the Praça do Comércio, by two straight streets: the Áurea and the Augusta Streets.
After a fire in 1836, the old Inquisition Palace was destroyed. Thanks to the efforts of writer Almeida Garrett, it was decided to build a theatre in its place. The Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, built in the 1840s, was designed by the Italian Fortunato Lodi in neoclassical style. A statue of the renaissance Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente is located over the pediment of the theatre. Some of Gil Vicente's plays had been censured by the Inquisition back in the 16th century.
In the 19th century the Rossio was paved with typical Portuguese mosaic and was adorned with bronze fountains imported from France. The Column of Pedro IV was erected in 1874. At this time the square received its current official name, never accepted by the people.
Between 1886 and 1887 another important landmark was built in the square: the Rossio Train Station (Estação de Caminhos de Ferro do Rossio). The Station was built by architect José Luís Monteiro and was an important addition to the infrastructure of the city. Its neo-manueline façade dominates the northwest side of the square.

Rossio Railway Station, Lisbon (No. 2)
The Neo-Manueline façade dominates the northwest side of the square and is a Romantic recreation of the exuberant Manueline style, typical of early 16th century Portugal. Its most interesting features are the two intertwined horseshoe portals at the entrance, the clock in a small turret and the abundant sculptural decoration. Inside, the platforms are connected by ramps to the façade level and are covered by a cast-iron structure executed by a Belgian firm. The station is an important example of Romantic (façade) and cast-iron (platform cover) architecture in Portugal.
On 3 May 2016, a 126-year-old statue of Sebastian of Portugal that stood in a niche between the entrance portals was accidentally destroyed by a person who knocked it over by climbing up for a photograph. The person was arrested.
