The sixth portrait in my 2019 portrait challenge, today’s theme is : leader ✊⭐️

Zitkála-Šá (also known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin) was a Dakota Sioux woman who was born in 1876 on the Yankton Indian Reservation. Her first eight years were spent happily with her mother on the reservation where she said she felt free and safe with her people. Sadly, as is the story of many indigenous children, she was taken to a missionary school where her heritage was suppressed, her long hair was cut short, and there she said she felt a deep misery. As an adult, she advocated for the rights of women and Native Americans, writing critically of the assimilation tactics of boarding schools and the loss of the traditions of her culture. She lobbied for the right to American citizenship, promoted the tribal and cultural identities of native peoples, and co-founded the National Council of American Indians, and much more. Zitkála-Šá also wrote collections of traditional legends and stories, and even wrote the songs and libretto for a Native American focused opera!

#MelaninMarch2021 Day 14 💙 It's finally daylight savings time I'm so happy!!! 🎉😭 I s2g my motivation and will to live directly correlates with how much sunshine I get (probs have a vitamin D deficiency let's be real 😬) Also, controversial opinion: I fucking love summer and I will fight anyone who gives me that "bUt yOu cAn wEaR mOrE lAyErS iN tHe wInTeR" bs. My hands and feet turn to ice in the winter no matter how many layers I wear or how many mugs of tea I drink. Meanwhile in the summer, stepping outside feels like the sun is giving me a hug ☺️ Granted, I don't have allergies, but that's the only concession I'll make for you winter lovers. Defend your favorite season in the comments, but anyone who doesn't say summer is wrong 😤 .
