Dry-Type vs. Oil-Filled Transformers
When the decision comes down to dry type or oil-filled transformers, stakes are high – safety, efficiency, and durability are in jeopardy. These two technologies energize our world differently, each having their own methods, capabilities, varying costs and risks.
We discuss in this article the fundamentals of dry-type and oil-filled transformers as well as the differences between the two.
What are Dry-Type Transformers?
The dry-type transformer is a static device. These transformers are enclosed in ventilated cases that allow air to circulate and cool the coils inside. The windings are coated with a special clear liquid to ensure insulation and protection.
It is important to keep in mind that dry-type transformers are only suitable for application up to 35kV due to cooling constraints. Their air cooling system does not provide sufficient cooling conditions to handle heat generated by higher voltage applications.
Four Types of Dry-Type Transformers
For small to medium voltage applications across industries, following transformers are widely used:
Vacuum Pressure Impregnated (VPI) Transformers
Vacuum Pressure Encapsulated (VPE) Transformers
Cast Coil Transformers
Open Wound Transformers
What are Oil Filled Transformers?
Oil filled transformers basically use oil for cooling. They are sometimes also called “Oil-immersed Transformers.”
These transformers are built inside sturdy, welded steel tanks filled with insulating oil. As the transformer runs, the coil and iron core naturally generate heat. Oil absorbs this heat and then passes it along to a cooling system to maintain safe temperature levels.
Due to the flammable nature of oil, to prevent or minimize risks such as leakage or fire, in case something happens, oil filled transformers are usually installed outdoors.
There are two main types of oil-filled transformers:
1-Phase Transformers
3-Phase Transformers
Oil-type transformers have high demand in industries like transmission and distribution lines, and renewable energy generation.
Differences Between Oil-filled & Dry-Types
Cooling Medium: The most obvious difference is the method used for cooling; the dry transformer uses air while oil-filled transformer uses oil to prevent overheating and fire risks.
Recyclability: One benefit of using oil-filled transformers is their recyclability. You can easily recycle its core and reuse it. On the other hand, dry-types transformers do not come with the same level of coil recyclability.
Efficiency: Thanks to their optimal cooling capacity, oil-filled transformers are more energy-efficient; they can handle high voltage loads effectively, whereas dry ones result in higher energy losses.
Maintenance: Dry-type transformers need less maintenance, mostly due to the fact that they do not use oil for cooling, and therefore, the problem of oil degradation does not exist, and consequently, the purification and maintenance requirement is less. They can remain online during minor faults. But oil-filled transformers need frequent checks on the oil and filtration for proper operation.
Cost: Oil-filled transformers are cheaper to operate initially, especially for larger power ratings. Their ability to provide better cooling reduces additional operational cost. Plus, they offer more options for recycling and remanufacturing, reducing long-term expenses too. On the other hand, dry ones are more expensive initially as well as have higher operational costs as they need more energy for cooling.
Location: Oil-filled units are usually placed outdoors due to spill risks, while dry-types are safer indoors – in offices, hospitals, and malls.
