ABC News to Pay $15 Million in Settlement with President-Elect Donald Trump Over Defamation Lawsuit
ABC News has reached a settlement with President-elect Donald Trump in his defamation lawsuit against the network and anchor George Stephanopoulos. The agreement includes a $15 million payment to a “presidential foundation and museum” and an additional $1 million to cover Trump’s legal fees.
As part of the settlement, ABC News will issue an apology. The statement, to be published as an editor’s note on the article central to the lawsuit, will read: "ABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump made during an interview by George Stephanopoulos with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC’s This Week on March 10, 2024."
In a public statement, an ABC News spokesperson commented: “We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms in the court filing.”
Background of the Case
The lawsuit stemmed from an on-air interview in March 2024 between George Stephanopoulos and Rep. Nancy Mace, during which Stephanopoulos repeatedly stated that a jury found Trump had “raped” E. Jean Carroll. Trump filed the defamation suit in Florida federal court, arguing the comments were false, malicious, and intended to cause harm.
E. Jean Carroll previously accused Trump of raping her in a department store in the mid-1990s. In 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation but stopped short of finding him guilty of rape under New York state law. Carroll was awarded over $88 million in combined damages across two lawsuits.
In July 2024, a judge ruled Trump’s lawsuit against ABC News could proceed, highlighting the legal nuance over whether a jury’s findings of “sexual abuse” could be interpreted as “rape” in a broader context. The settlement, filed on Saturday, allows Trump to avoid providing a deposition, which had been ordered for the following week.
Broader Context
This settlement marks a continuation of Trump’s contentious relationship with the media. In October, he filed a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS, alleging its 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris constituted election interference.
Trump’s legal maneuvers against news organizations underscore his broader campaign to challenge the media’s portrayal of him as he prepares for his return to the White House.
