Narrator: Hestia flashes a self-deprecating smile and shakes her head, prompting Glow to adopt a solemn expression and drop the subject.

Narrator: Hestia remains silent for a while, then lifts her gaze to meet Glow's as if she's made a decision.

Glow: For this reason, you would give up the opportunity to witness the experiment's completion yourself.

Hestia: I will carry the fire and hope to Pigeon Kingdom.

Glow: Sacrificing yourself as a saint is never your responsibility.

Hestia: But no one with a similar will to mine exists there. Were there another, I would unapologetically choose to stay here.

Narrator: Hestia's voice trembles as she chokes back tears, but the sharp determination in her eyes remains.

Narrator: For a long moment, the hologram device seems to malfunction and Glow's body appears to tremble.

Other medical personnel have reported attacks and this week someone threw flammable liquid on the doors of a new hospital under construction in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon. “There have been cases, you could say isolated, but all outrageous,” Mexican undersecretary of health Hugo López-Gatell said Monday night. “Fear produces irrational reactions, reactions that make no sense, have no foundation and have no justification.”

Coronavirus lockdowns across Latin America send Venezuelan migrants back to their broken homeland (Washington Post) Nearly 5 million Venezuelans have abandoned the collapsing socialist state in recent years, most of them to scrape out meager livings elsewhere in Latin America. But as countries from Argentina to Peru to Colombia shut down to slow the spread of the coronavirus, untold thousands of desperate Venezuelans, now jobless, hungry and living without a safety net, are heading home. Internal numbers being shared by officials in Venezuela’s border region of Tachira state show at least 7,600 have arrived since mid-March. More are arriving at a rate of up to 500 per day.

Venezuela’s navy battles a cruise ship, and loses (The Economist) It was, on the face of it, a mismatched contest. As the Resolute contacted its head office for instructions, the Naiguatá opened fire--a video released by the Venezuelan navy shows a sailor firing an ak-47 in the howling wind and darkness with Rambo-like enthusiasm--and rammed the cruise ship, according to its parent company. Unfortunately for the Naiguatá, the Resolute’s placid appearance belies the fact that its strengthened hull, built for polar cruising, can smash through metre-thick ice--and, it turns out, puny patrol boats. The Resolute brushed off the collision with “minor damages”, whereas the Naiguatá rapidly took on water and sank, leaving 44 sheepish sailors to be rescued. Venezuela disputes this account. The Bolivarian navy insisted that its gallant sailors put in an “impeccable performance” against the unarmed cruise ship, presumably by sinking with particular panache.

Christopher Kraft, NASA’s Face and Voice of Mission Control, Dies at 95

Christopher C. Kraft Jr., the legendary founder of NASA’s mission control, who directed America’s first piloted orbital flights, oversaw the Apollo 11 lunar landing and was director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, died on Monday in Houston, two days after the 50th anniversary of that historic moment on the moon. He was 95.

For 25 years, from the dawn of the space age in the 1950s to the threshold of almost routine launchings in the 1980s, Mr. Kraft played crucial roles in the space program. He devised the protocols for exploration beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, orchestrated early orbital missions and spacewalks, and developed projects that put astronauts on the moon and into the first reusable space shuttles.

Aside from the astronauts who made history — including Alan B. Shepard Jr., with his suborbital flight; John Glenn, in orbiting the Earth; and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the first to land on the lunar surface — Mr. Kraft was the most familiar face of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s early years, the steady ground commander who often explained missions to a rapt world at news conferences.

In an era of perilous experiments hastened by the Soviet success of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, Mr. Kraft presided over triumphal breakthroughs in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo projects. He also stood by helplessly when a fire killed three astronauts on a launchpad in 1967, but he helped devise the ingenious plan that saved the Apollo 13 crew after an explosion crippled their spacecraft en route to the moon in 1970.

At a time when there were no rules or procedures for space travel, Mr. Kraft, a brilliant aeronautical engineer, virtually wrote the book for NASA. He originated the concept of mission control, with authority vested in a ground-based flight director, not in a pilot-astronaut soaring through space at 7 miles a second who might be overwhelmed by pressures, especially during launch or re-entry.

Mr. Kraft also developed the templates for a generation of space exploration: global tracking and communications networks; instruments to monitor the condition of astronauts; spacecraft propulsion and operating systems; flight plans; emergency procedures; techniques for splashdowns and recoveries at sea; even programs to train and coordinate the work of thousands of ground personnel. His plans for each mission were thicker than the New York telephone books of those days.

Appearing before hundreds of reporters as NASA’s spokesman in the early missions, first at Cape Canaveral, Fla., and later in Houston, he seemed a mild-mannered, soft-spoken technocrat. But in the windowless mission control room, he became a blunt taskmaster, demanding obedience and precision from subordinates and astronauts.

Wearing headphones, chewing a cigar, seated in a swivel chair at the flight director’s console surrounded by engineers at their computers and 17 projection screens, he coolly absorbed avalanches of incoming data and made tough “go, no-go” decisions during launch countdowns, at separation points of multistage rocket ascents and at other critical times in a flight.

During his NASA years, he never saw a rocket lift off, except on television monitors. Nor did he usually address his astronauts. A “capsule communicator” relayed his instructions, although he went on the air to give emphasis to his orders, to intervene in emergencies and to banter away tensions. His voice conveyed unshakable confidence, though a flight surgeon during one liftoff measured his pulse at 135 beats a minute.

Some astronauts chafed under his commands. In one contretemps, Mr. Kraft regarded Scott Carpenter, one of America’s original astronauts, as insubordinate on a Mercury flight and grounded him permanently.

While his relationship with the astronauts was not always smooth, he was adamant about who was in charge. “The guy on the ground ultimately controls the mission,” Mr. Kraft told The New York Times Magazine in 1965. “There’s no question about that in my mind or in the astronauts’ minds. They are going to do what he says.”

Mr. Kraft directed all six piloted missions of Project Mercury, which made Shepard the nation’s first person in space in 1961 and put Glenn into orbit in 1962.

He also directed portions of the longer-duration, two-astronaut Gemini missions of 1965-66. These included the first rendezvous of two spacecraft and the first spacewalk, with Edward White floating above the United States, giving mesmerizing descriptions of the Earth below. Gemini proved that astronauts could remain in space for the time it would take to get to the moon and back.

As NASA turned to the later Gemini flights and the lunar-landing missions of the late 1960s, Mr. Kraft stepped back from direct control of flights and took broader roles in planning and managing Project Apollo, including the selection and mentoring of his successors in flight control.

By then, he was a household name to Americans, and his habit of lighting a cigar amid jubilant cheers and applause at moments of triumph in mission control had become a familiar portrait on television and in newspapers and magazines, a symbol of swelling national pride in outdistancing the Soviet Union.

In 1965, Mr. Kraft was on the cover of Time magazine, profiled as the “Conductor in a Command Post.” He drew the comparison himself: “The conductor can’t play all the instruments — he may not even be able to play any one of them. But he knows when the first violin should be playing, and he knows when the trumpets should be loud or soft, and when the drummer should be drumming. He mixes all this up and out comes the music. That’s what we do here.”

With his protégés Glynn Lunney and Eugene Kranz in charge of flight controls, Mr. Kraft became director of flight operations, with overall responsibility for the dress rehearsals of Apollo 7, 8, 9 and 10; for the historic Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969; and for Apollo 12, a moon landing four months later.

The 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing has been widely celebrated with a host of commemorative events, including television documentaries.

At the climax of Apollo 11’s descent to the lunar surface, Mr. Kraft was in mission control and conferred urgently with Mr. Kranz when, minutes before the scheduled landing, computer alarms rang out, threatening disaster. The world knew nothing about it until Mr. Kraft disclosed the event days later, and credited the Kranz team with resolving it.

“The computer was right on the ragged edge,” he said. Asked if the team had been worried, he snapped, “You’re damn right we were.”

Four more Apollo missions put astronauts on the moon, but Mr. Kraft was less directly involved. He became deputy director of the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston in 1969. However, when Apollo 13 was crippled by an explosion en route to the moon, Mr. Kranz called him in to mission control. Mr. Kraft chaired a meeting of senior managers, who devised a rescue plan that used the lunar excursion module as a “lifeboat” to save the crew, as dramatized in the 1995 film “Apollo 13.”

In 1972, Mr. Kraft was named director of the spacecraft center — renamed the Johnson Space Center in 1973 — and held the post for a decade until his retirement in 1982. Besides overseeing the remaining Apollo missions, he played roles in the success of the first crewed space station, Skylab; the first international space docking; the Apollo-Soyuz test project; and the first space shuttle flights.

The shuttle Columbia flew a nearly flawless first mission in April 1981, circling the world 36 times and landing in California. But its second flight seven months later had to be curtailed to two days from five after fuel-cell problems arose.

It was “the prudent thing to do,” said Mr. Kraft, who did not light a cigar.

Christopher Columbus Kraft Jr. was born in Phoebus, in Eastern Virginia, on Feb. 28, 1924, to Christopher and Vanda (Suddreth) Kraft. His father, a hospital finance officer, had been born just before the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the New World: thus the name. Later, many would consider it appropriate for the son.

Christopher Jr. was a fine baseball player and dreamed of becoming a pro. After high school graduation in 1941, he enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the outbreak of World War II, he tried to enlist in the Navy but was rejected because of a childhood hand injury. He graduated in 1944 with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering.

The next year he joined what is now known as the Langley Research Center, of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. It was on the cutting edge of aeronautical research, using wind tunnels to test aircraft designs and working on the X-1 experimental rocket.

In 1950, he married Elizabeth Anne Turnbull. They lived in Houston and had two children, Gordon and Kristi Anne. Complete information on his survivors was not immediately available.

At Langley for 13 years, Mr. Kraft distinguished himself by solving complex flight problems and directing the work of test pilots. He also met future leaders of America’s space program, particularly Robert R. Gilruth, who became his mentor and the first director of the Manned Spacecraft Center.

After Sputnik opened the space race, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1958. Langley research personnel became the core of its Space Task Group, charged with putting Americans into space, and Mr. Gilruth assigned Mr. Kraft to Project Mercury.

In retirement, Mr. Kraft became a consultant to Rockwell International and IBM. His memoir, “Flight: My Life in Mission Control,” was published in 2001 and became a best seller.

In 2011, NASA named the mission control center in Houston after him.

Michael Coats, then the director of the Johnson Space Center, called Mr. Kraft’s life a testament to his dream of space exploration:

“He is a space pioneer without whom we’d never have heard those historic words on the surface of the moon: ‘Houston. Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed.’ Those words effectively put Houston, and this building behind us, on the intergalactic map forever.”

They also show a tie between the right-wing PP-Ciudadanos-Vox bloc and the left-wing PSOE-Podemos bloc, with the smaller parties holding the balance of power. However, the same polls vary quite a bit and show that many Spaniards are undecided, less than one week to go.

The fragmentation and indecision open the door to quite a few possibilities:

1) Centrist PSOE-Ciudadanos government

A centrist PSOE-Ciudadanos coalition has been ruled out by Rivera, but the parties tried to form a government beforehand. Such an option is what businesses want and may push to. However, both parties need to have a majority for this option to be able to materialize. In addition, it will take for Ciudadanos to climb down the tree of their pre-election promises.

With enough pressure from big business, Spain may find itself with a business-friendly government within several months and this outcome is positive for EUR/USD[3].

Probability: Medium-High

EUR/USD effect: Positive in the long-term.

2) Left-wing PSOE-Podemos coalition

Such a coalition would also take time to negotiate, not only between the two coalition partners but also with the small regional parties. It is not the preferred choice of markets, but a large majority of the PSOE in the government and the recent positive track record of the government led by Sánchez may sooth fears.

All in all, it could weigh on the common currency, but only for a short while.

Probability: Medium-High

EUR/USD effect: Negative short term, OK afterward.

3) Rightwing PP-Ciudadanos-Vox government

A government led by the market-friendly PP and Ciudadanos and perhaps supported from the outside by Vox will also be considered market friendly and could have an immediate positive effect on the euro.

However, if more moderate parties do not command a majority, their reliance on Vox could lead them to some anti-euro sentiment[4], thus limiting the gains.

All in all, this scenario could have immediate positive effects on the euro, with issues down the road.

Probability: Medium

EUR/USD effect: Positive in the short-term, complicated later

4) Hung parliament

The current composition of parliament is the result of the June 26th elections that came after elections in December 2015 left a hung parliament. The country did not have a government for ten months, but the economy did very well during this time.

If negotiations between the parties go nowhere, Spaniards could return to the polls later this year, after the municipal and European Parliament elections in late May.

The mix of voter fatigue and uncertainty may weigh on markets in the short term, but the economic data will later have its say.

Probability: Medium-Low, the parties will eventually find a way.

EUR/USD effect: Negative in the short-term

5) Absolute majority for the PSOE

Incumbent PM Sánchez may be seen as a sign of stability for many Spaniards wary of the right-wing’s drive to the hard right and the soft approach by Podemos on Catalonia. They may go for the centrist option and could hand an outright majority for the PSOE.

The high number of undecideds and the electoral system that favors large parties could turn the largest party to a party holding 176 seats or more in the chamber.

In this case, the mix of pro-European policy and political stability would be an immediate and long-term win for the common currency.

Probability: Low

EUR/USD: Decidedly positive

Conclusion

Spain’s general elections will be closely watched across the old continent and will impact EUR/USD at the wake of the Asian session. The fragmented political system complicates the reaction in both the short and the long terms, but a euro-positive output is more likely than not.

DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise

DJI has unveiled the Mavic 2 Enterprise, a portable drone that is basically an accessorized up version of the Mavic 2 Zoom that can be used during critical operations like firefighting, emergency response, law enforcement, and infrastructure inspections.

The Mavic 2 Enterprise looks exactly like the Mavic 2 Zoom, and that’s because essentially it is. The Mavic 2 Enterprise is built on the Mavic 2 flight platform. It features the exact same camera and gimbal combination, and the weight is exactly the same. So what is different? It features an extended port to mount DJI modular accessories, and comes with a self-heating battery, 24 GB onboard storage, DJI AirSense, and is compatible with the DJI Pilot mobile app. The new self-heating batteries can also be used on the Mavic Pro 2 and the Mavic 2 zoom. The way the self-heating batteries work is when the temperature is between -10°C to 6°C and the battery power is higher than 50%, if the battery is powered off, you simply press and hold the battery power button for 5 seconds to enable self-heating. If it is powered on and is mounted on an aircraft, the self-heating function will be automatically enabled.

2x Optical Zoom And 3x Digital Zoom

Mavic 2 Enterprise uses the same Mavic 2 Zoom 1/2.3” 12 Megapixel CMOS sensor that is stabilized by a three-axis gimbal. The camera also has a 2x optical and 3x digital zoom capability. 1.EXPERIENCE!

If you know your vehicle like the back of your hand, you’ll be able to understand what way to address the obstacles on the track ahead with a tactical mind. You’ll find the best way to get out of sticky situations when you are off the road.

Racking up the miles, means you’ll learn how your 4WD reacts to large undulations, slippery situations and even steep hills.

2.ARTICULATION!

European Robotics Week 2017: Live coverage

We hope you’re enjoying the European Robotics Week! If you’re still looking for events to attend over the weekend, make sure to check out the map of 1000 happenings all over Europe.

One highlight was the European Robotics League competition focused on service robotics with teams from Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The teams had to show how their robots can assist old people in their daily life, all in an attrezzo that simulates a home.

The central event of the week was held in Brussels, and featured a “Robots Discovery” exhibition hosted by the European Committee of the Regions, where robotics experts from 30 European and regionally-funded projects outlined how their work could impact society. Exhibiting projects are listed below.

EurEyeCase will design instrumenation and control techniques to improve clinical outcome for a selection of relevant and urgent eye surgery procedures for certain pathologic conditions, affecting over 16 million elderly persons worldwide.

MURAB has the ambition to drastically improve precision and effectiveness of the biopsy gathering for cancer diagnostic operations. Through a robotic device which can autonomously scan the target area and optimally acquire data, the use of expensive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will be reduced to a minimum.

SoftPro project will study and design soft synergy-based robotics technologies to develop new prostheses, exoskeletons, and assistive devices for upper limb rehabilitation, which will greatly enhance the efficacy and accessibility for a greater number of users. The two showcased projects are: imec.WONDER, where a Nao robot engages in personalized interactions with people suffering from dementia, tracking behavioral disturbances by means of environmental sensors; and imec.ROBOCURE, where social robots are interfacing with networked glucose meters for improved diabetes education and follow-up therapy at home.

BabyRobot’s ambition is to create robots that can establish communication protocols, form collaboration plans on the fly, and create an impact beyond the consumer and healthcare application markets. BabyRobot focuses on special education for children with autism.

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is involved with many different robotics initiatives ranging from local projects (Brubotics/VUB Exoskeleton), spinoffs (Axiles), and international collaborations (CYBERLEGs). These projects are focused on assistive technologies and human-robot interactions, developing new exoskeleton technologies, commercializing new prosthetic devices such as the Axiles ankle prosthesis, and developing new powered prosthetic devices to assist those who may not be able to use current designs.

Early diagnosis with a non-invasive and painless endoscopic technique to eradicate colorectal cancer? Yes, a new solutions exists: the Endoo medical platform. The Endoo European Project aims to develop an active colonoscopic platform for robotic guidance of a painless, innovative, smart, and soft-tethered device, in order to achieve accurate and reliable diagnosis and therapy of colonic pathologies, with high acceptance by patients for preventive mass screening.

The Educational Robotics for STEM (ER4STEM) project aims to turn curious children into young adults passionate about science and technology through a hands-on platform using robotics The project’s research is aimed at developing an open operational and conceptual framework that involves pedagogical methods as well as technologies and tools for educational robotics, including a web repository of educational robotics in Europe.

The European Robotics League (ERL), a novel model for competitions funded by the European Commission, brings a common framework for three robotics challenges: ERL Industrial Robots, ERL Service Robots and ERL Emergency Robots, allowing teams to test their robots’ ability to face real-world situations. To connect the possibilities and the need for robots and artificial intelligence between companies, startups and academic groups, the InQbet makeathon takes place simultaneously in Brussels, New York and Singapore. More than 100 attended the kick-off, and 50 experts members are developing solutions with startups.

Dwengo has developed several tools and teaching materials to be used during classroom activities. Even though their hazardous effects to the human health are well known, the material is still present in many buildings. The Bots2ReC Project aims at the development of a robotic system for the efficient automated removal of asbestos contamination, without putting human workers at risk.

The CoCoRo project aimed at creating a swarm of interacting, cognitive, autonomous robots. The swarm of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are able to interact with each other in order to achieve environmental monitoring, search and exploration of underwater habitats.

DexROV develops technologies for executing sub-sea dexterous interventions (maintenance of infrastructures, geology, biology, archaeology) with underwater robots (ROVs) from a remote control center, through a satellite communication link. The remote control center is featured with a double arm, and double hands allowing the pilot to instruct dexterous operations. DexROV will be demonstrated in 2018 at 1,000 meters deep in the Mediterranean sea, while being operated from Zaventem, in Belgium.

The BADGER autonomous underground robotic system will be able to drill, maneuver, localise, map and navigate in the underground space, and will be equipped with tools for constructing horizontal and vertical networks of stable bores and pipelines. The proposed robotic system will operate in domains of high societal and economic impact including trenchless constructions, cabling and pipe installations, geotechnical investigations, large-scale irrigation installations, search and rescue operations, remote science and exploration applications.

SAGA is an ECHORD++ experiment. The goal of the project is to prove the applicability of swarm robotics to precision farming.

The ICARUS project proposes a comprehensive and integrated set of unmanned search and rescue tools which consist of assistive unmanned air, ground, and sea vehicles, equipped with victim-detection sensors. The unmanned vehicles collaborate as a coordinated team, communicating via ad hoc cognitive radio networking.

The H2020-SafeShore project, has as a main goal to cover existing gaps in coastal border surveillance, increasing internal security by preventing cross-border crime such as trafficking in human beings and the smuggling of drugs. It is designed to be integrated with existing systems and create a continuous detection line along the border.

The TIRAMISU project aims at providing the foundation for a global toolbox that will cover the main mine action activities, from the survey of large areas to the actual disposal of explosive hazards, including mine risk education and training tools.

The goal of SHERPA is to develop a mixed ground and aerial robotic platform to support search and rescue activities in a real-world hostile environment like the alpine scenario.

Disaster response and other tasks in dangerous and dirty environments can put human operators at risk. The ECHORD++ HyQ-REAL experiment will bring to the real world IIT’s four-legged robot, capable of a wide repertoire of indoor/outdoor motions ranging from running and jumping to carefully walking over rough terrain.

Co4Robots is a European-wide collaboration between industry and academia that aims to build a systemic, integrated methodology with which to accomplish complex tasks given to a group of robots in various environments such as a hotel, an office, a hospital, or a warehouse.
