You went to MICA, right? I’m currently going there and it’s good (stressful as fuck, but good) and I wanna know; what did you hate and what did you love about it? (Oh my god I sound like those end of year surveys they give you)
Hello there!!! Omfg I’m literally on campus right now for pride!!! LOL just got myself a smoky burger from OTH what what. okay okay okay good questions.
MICA has changed quite a bit since I was there. Like, my freshman year was fucking lit. If you take the shuttle and get Mr. Robert or Ms. Yvette, ask them about the nudists. Shit was wild.
Our freshman/foundation year was different in general too? Like
Okay. So. lol. Our classes were:
Elements of Visual Thinking - Which was a chance to explore concepts, mediums, learning how to properly critique, etc.
Critical Thinking - Which was just critical theory, but more on your own practice I guess? I don’t really know how to explain it.
EMAC - Which was exploring different forms of digital media and how to use them (Premier, Photoshop, Audacity, recording devices, etc)
Sculptural Forms - Which was a chance for you to explore 3d media. So it was held in what used to be 15/15 and it was woodshop, plaster, 3d printing, and cardboard.
Then, this is where I get pissed off and seriously fucking angry about this change.
But we USED to have Painting and Drawing. Now, if you got a 5 in AP art, you gained an extra credit and could skip Drawing/Painting 1. HAH. IMAGINE THAT. HAVING A PAINTING AND DRAWING CLASS AS A FOUNDATION FOR YOUR ART. BECAUSE IT’S KIND OF NECESSARY.
can you tell im a bit fucking salty?
They were separate classes and I think, they were extremely fucking important to the development of not only my art but my peers. For example, I fucking hated painting when I went to MICA. Literally fucking refused to touch the medium.
I went to my first class with Latoya Hobbs, tried oil paint, and everything fucking changed. I was a GD major (or that was my plan) and I immediately switched to Painting and I never looked back.
Unfortunately, yall don’t have that opportunity anymore. Especially since when you choose your major, you tend to stick with those classes. Which really fucking sucks, because you can tell the variety of art has gone down since this change happened. And I think that’s the thing that I dislike about MICA NOW the most. I had the chance to take things, was required to take them, and then I knew how to do a variety of things BECAUSE of those changes. And from what I understand, you don’t have those opportunities anymore. Which really fucking sucks. Because you also miss out on the amazing fucking professors in other majors as well. For example, Karen Warshal. I HIGHLY recommend taking her Portrait class and her Anatomy class. I swear to god, those were the best, more useful classes I’ve ever taken. Is she crazy? A bit. But she’s the most genuine, caring, supportive, and one of the hardest professors I’ve ever had. And thats what you WANT. You don’t want someone to butter you up, tell you your art is poppin when it’s not, and to try and let you off easy because you look upset. Karen tells you how it fucking is and that’s so god damn important. no matter what major you are, TAKE HER FUCKING CLASSES. They’re important and they’re necessary to your development as an artist. Even if you’re not into figural art. - also she makes food and brings it in. and if you’re sick she might make you chicken noodle soup. shout out to karen <3
Honestly, Karen was probably one of my favorite things about MICA. Along with Mark Karnes, TONY FUCKING SHORE. LISTEN. YOU NEED TO TAKE A CLASS WITH TONY SHORE (PAINTING). I think he might be doing a class on race (which haha he knows hes white as fuck) and i think it will be fantastic. so keep an eye out, AND RUTH TOULSON THE ANTHROPOLOGY TEACHER. IT MIGHT STILL BE A REQUIREMENT. HER CLASSES HAVE AN 80+ WAITLIST. IF YOU GET ON. ITS SO WORTH IT FUCKING TRUST ME. SHES OUT OF THIS FUCKING WORLD. PAUL LONG, HE’S AN ACADEMIC TEACHER (TEACHES POETRY AND SOME OTHER SHIT. HE’S GREAT. BRINGS SNACKS EVERY DAY), and others?? if you want to know more, please message me and i’ll give you them!
Anyway, I havent really answered your question!
Dislike:Housing situation fucking sucked. getting a room was fucking ridiculous. They ran out of room for us because they started accepting more (this happened when sophomore housing was required. My year was the first year that went into effect and they had to buy out bolton hill apartments. people had to break leases, etc. it was fucking ridiculous).
The MICA store is eh? It used really good and held in dolphin. But it was literally falling apart. Now its too.. idk. It’s fine. I prefer artists and craftsmen.
Access to studios and equipment is eh too. Because of time constraints.
How the student body treats the fucking faculty is DISGUSTING. One girl literally called one of the sweetest security guards the ‘help’. Ms. Gloria (senior in security) is fantastic, Officer Green is everything, Ms. Yvette is so fucking sweet, and Mr. Robert makes my heart sing.
The student body in general LOLOLOLOLOL. ‘Surround yourself with good juju’ - Former MICA Grad (my best friend) The fucking student body mica page is a fucking dumpster fire lol.
I don’t like how white MICA is and how entitled a good part of the student body is. The amount of entitlement is fucking ridiculous. And the amount of ignorance is astounding. Also the obviousness to what fucking city you're in, is so wild i cant fucking even. Like. MICA is deceptively beautiful (the MICA bubble). Which is why it is high in crime lol. Just be alert and don’t be a god damned dumbass walking around at 3 am with your fucking headphones in, smoking a cigarette, and acting like you’re fucking immune to being mugged. Just saying. Take the shuttles and you’ll most likely be gucci.
I don’t like how MICA spends its money (our money). And what they choose to invest in - like buying random fucking buildings and not telling the students what it’s for, and fucking raising the price of tuition and living in order to compensate.
The total and utter lack of transparency, etc. It felt eehhhh I don’t know how to explain it.
NOW. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE A LOT AND THAT IM JUST SHITTING ON MICA. BUT MY MICA EXPERIENCE WAS THE BEST OF MY LIFE. I LEARNED SO MUCH. AND I FIND WHAT I LEARNED THERE TO BE INVALUABLE (except for the fact that I’m 56k in debt. just saying)
But really. I loved MICA. I wish I could go back. I met so many amazing people, made great connections, and I don’t think I would have had the same love at any other art school. (I have friends in SAIC, Pratt, Parsons, FIT, SVA, RISD - they all complain about the same things. they in the grand scheme of things, are material. Which important because, hah, money. But, material nonetheless. If you have the means, I don’t think these things I explained are deal breakers)
Now what I loved about MICA. Because honey. I fucking LOVED MICA:
When I was touring schools, I was kind of eh about them? Not in the sense that I wouldn’t have a good time or be ungrateful, but I didn’t get that feeling. Does that make sense? For example, I took a tour at SVA and I have very very strong opinions about SVA, I had no feeling. When I stepped on MICA’s campus, that was fucking it for me. Not only was I comfortable there, but the professors that were at the tour, made it their duty and went out of their way to make myself and the other potential students feel welcome. They were personable, they were kind and welcoming, they were warm, and that continued even after I decided MICA was the place for me.
My class at least, had no drama lololol. Again, my freshman year was a hell of a lot of fucking fun. We didn’t have any big racist shit going on like other years (ahem ahem 2018, 2019). INSTEAD, we had the nudists, we had carrot videos (ask around about that), it kind of felt less cliquey? Because everyone was generally interested in being friends? Idk. Like we definitely had groups and they became more evident as majors really clicked in, but in the beginning, everyone was pretty much together (this was the first year that the grill opened and leake was a thing. So we were all figuring out the dorms together). I mean we had drama but it wasn’t... idk. It wasn’t like mica student body (maybe its because we didnt have that to fuck shit up lolol).
On The Hill was my shit. Still my shit. I fucking love on the hill with a fucking passion. Pom Iced Teas, where you at. The neighborhood in general was really nice. Baltimore is one of my favorite cities and the stigma of it will be broken as soon as you start exploring it. HOWEVER, BE FUCKING SMART. DONT BE A FUCKING IDIOT. IF YOU DON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE SOMEWHERE, YEET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE. TRAVEL WITH OTHERS. DON’T BE THOSE DUMB ASS WHITE GIRLS FROM RURAL FUCKING TOWNS THAT THINK THEY CAN WALK AROUND AT 4 AM OR JUST WHEN IT’S DARK OUT, ALONE, AND BE OKAY. TAKE. THE FUCKING. SHUTTLE.
The studio spaces were really nice so as they’re taken care of. the equipment is really nice. take advantage of it while you can. because once you’re out of school. hah. you’re screwed.
Networking was nice.
Being close to the Walters was amazing and the ability to go to DC for the day only spending 8$ on the Marc train to get there was amazing. Having Penn right on campus.
Again, the professors were in majority, fucking amazing.
Some professors had classes outside of MICA (karen has model drawing classes at her studio) take them! They’re really worth it!
I actually didnt mind the dorms. 10x better than most colleges.
Accessibility was amazing. Especially since its not a closed campus, but everything is in one place. That’s not the case with a lot of Art colleges.
And most of all, I just loved being there. I loved learning. I loved the people. I loved baltimore, i loved the professors. MICA 10000% shaped how I am as an artist in the best way and I think it’s an amazing place to be despite the downfalls.
Don’t take everything I said as gospel. like I said, these are just my experiences as well as a few of my friends in the same fine arts department. The others, I’m not sure about. But yeah. I hope this helps! You can always message me and I’d be happy to refer you to classes, professors, etc. Good luck with next year!

i hope this doesn't sound weird (off to a great start i know ksksks) but i saw you were a music major, and i've got a muse who is also a music major, could you tell me some tips in writing a muse that's into music? if this is weird though please feel free to delete it!
of course i wouldn’t mind ! if there’s anything i’m able to help with and is semi - knowledgable about , it’s music . so i’m happy to do so . obviously these are of my own thoughts and experiences with taking music at university , and just things that i’ve observed that sometimes are exaggerated or understated when i’ve been in higher education roleplays where music majors have been present . i hope this helps somewhat , anon !
01. music majors aren’t as eclectic with their music tastes as you probably think they are. just because we have to analyse different pieces and genre types doesn’t mean we enjoy it, it’s just apart of the syllabus we’re currently doing, which means we have no choice. i think to authentically portray a realistic muse, you can’t come out and just say wow they love all types of music because they’re just so in love with the subject ! because it’s just not realistic. for example i really hate baroque era with a passion, and then with modern music i’m not the biggest disco or country lover either. 02. there’s lots of different occupations that people can pursue through music, and usually majors already have their chosen paths in mind when attending university - though random opportunities do occur. when you look at music as a whole: there’s so many areas in life that it coincides with, and with people taking hybrid courses instead of just core music ( eg. music and photography, music and english literature, music and art ) , the opportunities are limitless. off of the top of my head, in my class i know an aspiring music teacher, recording engineer, song - writer, singer, conductor, music therapist, music journalist, concertmaster / mistress, opera singer, and a production music writer. sometimes talents are scouted at recitals, recommended through professors or perhaps an external source like a music teacher. big opportunities can occur as music is a pretty wide subject and as aforementioned, with a lot of career prospects - but also remember that there’s a lot of musicians out there who have as much potential as you do , and alike most market’s it’s very over saturated , so this is pretty uncommon.03. it’s okay for your muse to not be a musical prodigy at every instrument , in fact, it’s kind of rare. i think in my uni, the most instruments somebody plays is four, and that’s considered above average. to most universities, being able to play one - two instruments to a high grade is better than playing four instruments at an average level. speaking of levels, your grades pretty much always determine if you’re accepted into a university or not. i don’t know how the us works grade - wise musically, but i had to be grade 8 ( the highest grade you can achieve ) to even apply to all three of my university choices, it takes a lot of gruelling work from a certain age to get up to par, so if your muse is just magically starting to play the piano that rivals some others that have been playing since they were 7.. then i would Reassess that.
04. the voice is an instrument. i don’t think a lot of people take into account that music majors who sing are usually accepted for the fact that they’re really, really good at singing ? ? i don’t feel qualified enough to talk about this, since i don’t sing myself ! however, if i ever apply to a roleplay and see a music major, i never see them acknowledging that singing is their main talent or strength, because they usually pigeonhole that sort of thing with acting majors or people who want to get into broadway, something of that sort. regardless if your muse wanted to be a singer, the best thing they could pursue is obviously, music !
05. practise is necessary. sometimes this imposes on social requirements. i know all majors require a massive amount of time and dedication spent on them, but some of my friends who are majors in other subjects joke about me coming out for lunch or for a night out, because usually, i’m stuck in my dorm room studying for music theory or practising pieces on musical instruments. some people are incredibly lucky financially, too. they can afford to not have a job perhaps because a relative is paying for their fees, and therefore can relax some days, but for us broke folk ? we don’t have that option. days wherein we don’t have to go into work, a lot of time is spent rehearsing. practising an instrument is pretty much key in getting better, and like a car, if you don’t use it in a while, it’ll ( you’ll ) get rusty. i know it’s not realistic for you to play your muse as somebody who never has a social life, but the stress of a music major’s life definitely a thing to explore because i don’t think it’s done enough. a lot of people think of it as an easier subject than others and play characters accordingly, but just because it’s a more creative subject doesn’t mean it doesn’t stress us tf out !
06. some musicians take music more seriously than others. kind of ties in with the former point, but if you’ve ever watched the film whiplash, there’s a lot of people out there who have the same mentality as the protagonist in that film. some people love music but get tired or frustrated with it from time to time, others want to be the best at their instrument to join musical legends in their ranks, going above and beyond to reach their goals. sometimes said goals are achievable, sometimes they’re not. people in my class know how to balance practise vs rest, and some people just don’t want to rest at all ! there’s so many different personalities in one subject that realistically, you could portray any sort of muse, i guess drive is something you yourself would be good at questioning pertaining to your character.
07. pls don’t overcomplicate an origin story as to why your muse plays an instrument. 90 percent of my class play instruments because their parents, guardians, whatever got them lessons when they were younger, or taught them themselves if they were musicians too. never have i seen somebody who started music after their grandma’s drug dealing boyfriend robbed their house and only left a guitar behind. of course, muses can develop a talent for it coming out of a tough scenario ( fun fact: more recently music therapy has increased the amount of people taking up musical instruments as a hobby by 10 percent ) and not everyone will be fortunate enough to have parents who can afford to pay for tuition, but as always, just make it realistic !
#tagging this as#rph#rpc#just for anybody who may find it useful ??#Anonymous#* answered#i rlly hoped this helped :(

If you’ve read our Slack chats or heard our podcast, you’ll know that I get annoyed whenever the discussion of “lanes” — such as the left/liberal lane versus the establishment/moderate lane — comes up in the context of the Democratic primary. Without getting too far into the weeds,3 I basically have two beefs with most of the analyses I see.
Beef Numero Uno: These analyses tend to treat voter preferences as being frozen in time — they’re about who the voter supports now, and perhaps who the voter currently lists as their second choice. But to the extent that lanes are interesting, it’s because they tell us something about the route a voter took in coming to a decision. A voter who backed Bernie Sanders in 2016 but has since switched to Elizabeth Warren won’t show up as a Sanders supporter if you ask about her current preferences, for instance. But the evolution of this voter’s choice of candidates would actually be evidence of the existence of a left/liberal policy lane.
Second, these analyses are usually oriented around an effort to either prove or debunk the existence of a particular type of lane, usually the liberal or moderate lanes. But voters come around to their decisions for lots of different reasons. Some voters do vote on the basis of ideology or policy. Some vote on demographics or identity. Some factor in more abstract considerations like “leadership” or “electability.” And some just haven’t thought deeply about their choices yet. When candidates are aligned along several different dimensions — for instance, Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke have much in common in terms of their demographics and their policy platforms — you can see especially strong correlations in which voters support them, with one tending to rise or fall at the other’s expense. But most of the time, it’s messier, with different threads pulling in different directions.
To extend the lanes metaphor, you wouldn’t expect to see a single, parallel set of lanes connecting all voters in the Democratic primary. Instead, you’d expect something more like a complex, multi-modal transportation network, where some parts of the network are more robust than others, but there are a lot of somewhat redundant options. This doesn’t mean that paths between different candidates are irrational or random, any more than the choices of, say, Manhattan commuters are. But they might look chaotic in the aggregate if you don’t recognize that different voters have different priorities and take different routes to get there.
Let’s think about voters who supported Sanders in 2016, for instance, and which candidates they might be supporting now if they aren’t sticking with Bernie. Voters four years ago might have had several reasons to prefer Sanders to Hillary Clinton:
Some voters — such as those who do choose candidates on the basis of ideology — liked Sanders because he was proud to wave the flag for democratic socialism. These voters would probably be inclined to back Warren, if they aren’t staying with Sanders.
Some voters liked Sanders because he was an anti-establishment outsider. I’m not sure where these voters would go today. They certainly wouldn’t be inclined to go to Joe Biden or Kamala Harris, who have the most support from the party establishment. But they might also see Warren as too establishment-friendly. Maybe more eccentric candidates like Tulsi Gabbard and Andrew Yang would work for this group. But I’d expect a lot of anti-establishment types to stick with Sanders. In fact, that seems to describe a lot of the voters he’s currently left with. If you look at donations, for example, a lot of Sanders donors don’t seem to be interested in donating to any of the other candidates, suggesting that he’s somewhat of an island unto himself.
Some voters liked Sanders because he is a white man. I’m not saying this is an especially large group of voters. But there are certainly some, and maybe quite a few. They have lots of other white guys to choose from if they want to move on from Sanders: Biden, O’Rourke, Buttigieg and so forth.
Relatedly, voters who associated Sanders with the white working class and supported him on that basis, or who believe that a candidate who does well with white working-class voters is more “electable,” might be attracted to Biden this time around, in addition to Sanders.
Some younger voters liked Sanders because of his emphasis on policies like free college tuition, and because he came to unexpectedly represent a break from the hegemony of Baby Boomer-dominated politics. It’s not totally clear who these young voters are supporting yet — they can be hard to pin down in polls, and they can sometimes be late to engage in the process. But Buttigieg, Yang and O’Rourke have the potential to overperform with young voters relative to the electorate overall.
Finally, some voters just aren’t tuned in yet. The notion that Sanders and Biden’s support is just name recognition is mostly misguided, in my view. But it’s certainly true for some voters. These voters’ preferences may simply reflect who they’ve been hearing about in the news lately, which recently has meant Biden, Warren and Harris in addition to Sanders.
So if you run through this list, you certainly do see some major highways that connect Sanders and Warren. But there are also a lot of ways to get from Sanders to Biden. And there are some byways that link Sanders to several of the second-tier or minor candidates, most notably Gabbard, Buttigieg, Yang and O’Rourke. The one major candidate who doesn’t have a lot of obvious connections with Sanders is probably Harris. It’s sort of like trying to get from the West Village to the Upper East Side. You can certainly do it, and they aren’t that far apart as the crow flies, but it requires an extra transfer or two.
All of that might sound good in theory, but is there any data on who Sanders’s 2016 voters are supporting now? Actually, yes! Emerson College, in its national polls, has broken out results based on who Democrats said they supported four years ago. Since the sample sizes are a bit small, I combined the last two Emerson national polls, which were conducted in early and late July, respectively.
Who Sanders and Clinton voters from 2016 support now
Combined results from a July 6-8 and a July 27-29 national poll
Current pick for respondents who supported … Candidate Clinton in 2016 Sanders in 2016 Bernie Sanders 9% 31% Joe Biden 43 19 Elizabeth Warren 15 13 Kamala Harris 18 10 Pete Buttigieg 4 6 Andrew Yang 0 5 Beto O’Rourke 2 4 Tulsi Gabbard 0 3 Cory Booker 1 1 Others 7 8
Source: EMERSON COLLEGE
This data actually does a good job reflecting our “predictions” from above about how Sanders’s support from 2016 might map to the various candidates this year. (Granted, it’s easy to make “predictions” when you get to see the data before making them, as I did in this case.) Start with some of the lesser-known candidates. Gabbard and Yang might not have that many supporters, but the ones they do have are drawn disportionately from former Sanders voters. O’Rourke and Buttigieg also do better with former Sanders voters than with ex-Clinton ones.
Among the major candidates, there are quite a few Sanders 2016 –> Biden 2020 voters, although not nearly as many as there are Clinton 2016 –> Biden 2020 voters. Harris gets her support mostly from Clinton voters; relatively little comes from 2016 Sanders voters, consistent with our hypothesis.
Warren is, by contrast, drawing about equal shares of Clinton 2016 and Sanders 2016 voters. Maybe you’re surprised that Warren’s numbers aren’t more slanted to former Sanders supporters, but keep in mind that (i) there are plenty of connections between Clinton and Warren too, e.g. in their appeal to college-educated women; (ii) whereas Clinton’s voters need to look around for a new candidate, Sanders 2016 voters have the option of picking Sanders again. One way to look at it is that 44 percent of Sanders 2016 voters are voting for either Sanders or Warren this time around, while just 24 percent of Clinton 2016 voters are.
So there almost certainly is a robust left policy/ideology lane in the Democratic primary. It’s probably even one of the more well-traveled routes. It’s just far from the only road in town.

Who to Vote For – Episode III

For the third time in as many years, the British public – that’s me and you, in most probability – are again heading to the ballot box. I won’t be. I’m a postal voter. I’m not tromping off to some church or primary school.
If you’re reading this, the likelihood is that you don’t really know who to vote for. Or you’ve read some of my previous rants and think this one might be equally amusing. I’ll try my best, but I promise nothing but a strong and stable article... Sorry.
This year seems one of the strangest elections in modern times, because much like a soap opera there is an underlying storyline arc that affects everything: Brexit. True, most elections tend to be dominated by one matter or another, often the economy and immigration. Brexit bundles both of these and more into one glorious package of foggy doom whose very mystery frightens the pants off of most rational people.
However, I will refrain from talking about Brexit – the deal has been done, Article 50 has been triggered. We’re going. It’s now we look at who wishes to lead us and who amongst the political class has the ability to successfully govern an “independent” Britain over the next five years. Those leaders are our current Prime Minister Theresa May, the Marxist renegade Jeremy Corbyn, and the sinner Tim Farron.
All the polls indicate that Theresa May and the Conservatives are heading towards a landslide victory that will rival that of any other Tory Prime Minister. Whilst the polls have been wrong before, it does seem likely that a Conservative victory is in the stars: most who favour Brexit will likely vote for the Tories, especially now that UKIP is a de facto dead duck. Incorporate the usual Conservative base and that’s a strong and stable foundation. (Sorry, again. That’s the last one.) This is before we wonder about Labour voters or floating voters who usually vote for Labour.
The workers’ party has changed immensely since the victory in 1997 of a young visionary named Tony Blair and the candid camera comedy of Gordon Brown, whilst an unfortunate Ed Miliband failed in 2015 in a bacon butty battering. Following Mr Miliband on Twitter, I genuinely fail to understand how his humour, charisma and personality failed to get across. Now Labour is led by Corbyn, who has won two leadership battles in as many years and completely polarises the left. To some he is the Obi-Wan Kenobi of the political world; to others he is a fossil of bygone times that leaves him looking more like the reincarnation of Michael Foot than a successor to the fresh face of a ’97 Blair. His views obfuscate official Labour policy and his flip-flop with the European Union leaves even his strongest supporters sometimes baffled.
Therefore for many floating voters and traditional reds, Labour doesn’t seem to be an option. Yet many will be loathe to vote for the Conservatives, especially as modern day Toryism seems imbued with cruel tax-cuts for the wealthy and public sector-cuts for everyone else. This is slightly unfair as there is sound economic theory for doing both; plus the record of David Cameron, now overshadowed immensely by the gloom of a failed referendum, isn’t actually a “typically Tory” CV: legalisation of gay marriage, increase of the minimum wage and increasing the lower tax threshold to name a few. Yes, there are worries about privatisation of hospitals and healthcare, but as a patient of a private dental clinic, I can tell you it’s not bad. The apparent demise of the NHS is, however, deeply troubling.
We are left then with floating voters who cannot stomach Corbyn, yet are conscientious about public spending and public healthcare (and foxes, as May is rumoured to reintroduce their hunting) to enough of a degree that Conservatism isn’t for them. Who are they left with?
The Liberal Democrats, apparently.
The yellow bird hasn’t quite flown the vicious nest left behind by the tuition fees debacle in the coalition government between 2010 and 2015. People I have spoken to still feel that the Liberal Democrats either lied to or betrayed their voters – this is a fundamental misunderstanding of politics that is either ignorant or naive. The Liberal Democrats may have entered into government, but they did not win their election. This means that their manifesto – a modus operandi for if they win the election – is practically null and void. Nick Clegg was smart to barter the tuition fees increase – which was essentially a certainty anyway – in order to gain a much-needed referendum on electoral reform. For those unaware, electoral reform very rarely happens, simply because the party in power has directly benefitted from the current electoral system, therefore has no need to change it. Unfortunately, Clegg and his centrist posse bartered weakly for the Alternative Vote, a system so evilly convoluted it may as well had been written in Klingon, instead of pressing for Proportional Representation or a partially-elected House of Lords. If electoral reform had succeeded, it would have meant a weakening of Tory and Labour strongholds and a welcome embrace to third, fourth and even fifth parties to the House of Commons. Nick Clegg held the long-term view that electoral reform would strengthen his party to implement the policies they stand for, sacrificing a short-term policy that failed to win them an election.
Now our head is around that, why not vote for the Liberal Democrats? They have championed the rights of practically everyone in the country from native Brits to immigrants, women, the LGBTQ+ community, students (ummm...), low- and middle-income earners, and animals. They’re almost like the Avengers if they were activists. Yet they are amateurish – this is an election where they can push the fact that they support integration with Europe, whilst respecting the Brexit vote. This is an election where they can unconditionally guarantee the rights of EU migrants in the UK right now. Instead, Farron has been drawn into some debate beyond satire that he thinks gay sex is a sin (how Farron’s personal opinion on the bedroom antics of others is important, I’ll never know), distracting voters from Lib Dem policies. Meanwhile their post-EU statements of another referendum, another referendum for when we leave, blah blah blah, has just confused people. A clear message must come out of the Lib Dem camp to combat the opaque and random policies found on the back of fag-packets in Labour Party HQ and the seemingly heartless ones from Millbank Tower. Only then will voters understand that the Liberal Democrats are a genuine third option.
Independents are always a good option. If you really care who your representative is in Parliament, explore the Independents and small-party candidates standing in your constituency. A vote for them is a vote against the Estbalishment (which everyone apparently hates but always seems to vote for) and allows them to reclaim their £500 deposit if they receive 5% of all votes in their constituency. There are currently four Independent MPs sitting in Parliament – evidence that it can be done. Because they have no party loyalty, they are unequivocally representing their constituents, which is how parliamentary democracy is meant to be – at least in theory.
Those are essentially your options. Staunch supporters will vote for their party regardless. Traditional Labour voters anxious over a Corbyn premiership have three choices: support the man who has won the leadership twice, support your local Labour candidate if you like them and hope Corbyn will resign after a bad election, or vote for another candidate entirely. It makes sense for Labour supporters to turn their vote to the Liberal Democrats, whose policies are closest to pre-Corbyn Labour, or an Independent that they identify with. Though the latter won’t make a huge impact on the national scale, they will serve their constituents well; the Lib Dems as a strong third party would be capable of ensuring legislation passed by government is fairer, or block any that isn’t in tandem with other opposition parties. They’re a safe option – not exciting, but reliable, with the long-term interests of the British people at heart.
If you live in any of the devolved areas of the UK, I must confess I lack sufficient knowledge of your needs and issues to provide specific advice. In Scotland it seems that a strong SNP would push for a second independence referendum, which I believe the Scottish people have every right to. In the face of a Conservative government that refuses to comprehend such a matter, even after the constitutional maelstrom of Brexit, it’s in the interest of the Scottish electorate to vote against the Conservatives. Wales and Northern Ireland seem to me unpredictable – I couldn’t even hazard a guess what colour they will go come June 8th.
No matter who you vote for, my message as always is make sure you do vote. Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, Independent or any party, make sure you voice your opinion via the ballot box. If you don’t, you lose the right to voice your opinion for five years, as those who did vote shouldn’t have any respect for your political views. Personally I would advocate for the Liberal Democrats, as only a centrist approach will help to unify a nation becoming increasingly fractured.
If you disagree, great! That’s a strong and stable (that’s definitely the last one, I promise) parliamentary democracy! Just make sure you vote.
If you aren’t registered, you can do so at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
