Hope/Despair

Despite liking Matsuda/Naegi kinda I think this is the second time I’ve written them interacting. And I just really love the idea of what conversations Naegi had prior to sdr2. Which means that yes, this is a Matsuda Lives!AU and that it may or may not be a prequel to my Protag Matsun fic. Ahahaha...

“I’ve already met an Ultimate Hope,” Matsuda said, arms folded and gaze dulled. “Needless to say, it didn’t go over all that well.”

“I’m not claiming to be Ultimate Hope,” the kid argued, cheeks puffed. It’s annoying how childish he looks, especially when Matsuda knows what he’s capable of at this point. “I just don’t believe in despair being the end all be all.”

“Yeah?” Matsuda raised a brow. “That so? You believe there’s always light in the darkness? Always hope in despair? Trite shit like that?”

“Optimism is one of my few remarkable qualities,” is the easy response. The kid doesn’t even hesitate. It’s aggravating. Matsuda can already see why Junko reacted the way she did to him. He’s so unassuming, dull, and plain—and yet. And yet.

Naegi Makoto—the second Ultimate Hope, regardless of his shitty sense of modesty.

“You really think you can save the remnants?” Matsuda asks, soft and terse. “That you can just undo her damage and they’ll turn into good people? You do realize they were a shit bunch from the fucking start, right?”

“They deserve a chance,” Naegi snapped, eyes fierce. “They were manipulated and warped by Enoshima-san. They were used. If she hadn’t showed up...”

“They’d just be worthless adults,” Matsuda said. “Neither despair not even hope. Just a privileged bunch of shits skating by without any actual challenge. You do realize that none of them cared about changing the world for the better even before all this, right?”

Naegi frowns at him. “Matsuda-kun, you’re so cynical.”

God. He sounds just like Komaeda.

“You’re risking fucking everything for people who’ve never done any amount of good in their fucking lives,” he hissed. “Do you not get that? Instead of thinking about them—about us—why not think about the people that have been nothing more than victims, huh? The people who have only gotten hurt, only had their lives destroyed for no other reason than just being there...”

Naegi stares at him. His stare is sad. It’s so sad that Matsuda wants to scream at him to stop.

“You’re so fucking full of yourself. Thinking that you can take on the burden of saving Ultimate Despair. You couldn’t save Junko, what the hell makes you think...”

“I have no intention on not at least trying to help, Matsuda-kun. It’s not about deserving. It’s—what good would it do to have you all killed on the spot? It wouldn’t undo any damage. It wouldn’t bring back those who were killed.” Naegi sighs, shaking his head. “I’m sick of bloodshed. I’m sick of people killing each other, regardless of the reason. I believe there are better ways than that.”

That’s...so naïve. And this is Ultimate Hope? Seriously? This is who defeated Junko?

Actually—this kind of simple-mindedness might have very well been something that even Junko couldn’t overcome.

“You could be killed,” Matsuda pointed out. “Aren’t you scared?”

“A little, but I’m not giving up just because of that. No way.”

Haaah. Naegi Makoto. Second Ultimate Hope. He’s—

“There’s no arguing with you. Okay. Let’s see what you can actually accomplish.”

A stubborn fucking idiot. My life is just full of them.

1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?

I'm holding off on working on Protag Matsun's fourth chapter because... Hhhhh. But also because I need to rewatch sdr2's fourth chapter at some point.

2) what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?

Idk, my writing is pretty embarrassing most of the time.

7) when asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?

Embarrassed...

9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?

Listen to music and read other works.

16) are there any characters who haunt you?

There are characters who I hate and hate writing (this isn't always hand-in-hand) but often have to because they're narratively relevant, so getting to scenes with them often has me feeling...haunted.

17) if you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?

Watch Utena.

hi! I was a big fan of your works before I moved on from danganronpa. recently I was feeling kinda nostalgic and so I decided to reread your protag matsuda au (which is still wonderful btw). it seems you moved on from. danganronpa too now. so I am curious! do you plan to update it? or is the fic abandoned now?

A lot. Happened. And Protag Matsun, bless its heart, got into the hardest stages to write since it's mostly original from here. I know some people can go ahead and write DR cases easily but it's not easy for me!

So, yeah, sorry I am focusing on other things at this time ;v;

Do you still do Dangan Ronpa asks? If so what top 3 characters do you ship with Mikan and why?

...even when I was more into danganronpa (I'm primarily into danmei and yuri stuff now), I don't think I had three ships with Mikan I particularly liked.

There's Tenko. Because she actually seems emotionally mature enough to help Mikan get the help she needs but is also immature and fallible enough to still struggle and thus make things a little more complicated.

...I'm pretty neutral towards the rest.

In terms of non-romantic/non-sexual, there's her and Matsuda. You can read the Protag Matsun fic to see how I view it and uh, spoilers: it's not a positive relationship. It was fun to write though!

A big meaty update to Protag Matsun! As the despair disease reaches its peak, we reach the point of divergence! Very exciting, but be mindful of the warning in the notes! There’s also a song reference in the title and “chapter summary” that whoever correctly identifies first will get a ficlet request!

I can’t believe this fic has somehow got 100 bookmarks. That makes me so happy~

The bad ending of Chapter 3 for SDR2 Protagonist Matsuda Yasuke AU has been posted! Which means that Chapter 3 is done and we’re going on another hiatus! Just in time for 2022!

The bad ending is REALLY gruesome so be warned. But you might end up finding a couple of revelations in this wayward, doomed timeline. Who knows?

If these murders weren’t so horrifying, it could’ve been rather heartwarming! But tensions remain high as Matsuda is all too aware of how precarious the situation is...
