Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
It was nice having a short week to ease back into work, and a slow week at that as we headed into a four day weekend.
Yesterday I hit 57, the big 60 is hiding just around the corner and the walk to retirement age is just around the corner from that. It’s strange. I don’t feel that old mentally. My body is broken but my spirit and mind are doing fine.
On with the linkage! Enjoy. 😀
Eleanor Beardsley and Chandelis Duster • NPR
French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, took a tour of the cathedral early on Friday. Macron marveled at the soaring light stone ceilings — now cleansed of soot and centuries of grime — as he toured the more than 800 year old restored cathedral.
With all the bad news in the world I thought I’d share some hope. It was so depressing to see Notre Dame burn. But it’s back! That’s something to celebrate.
Benjamin Sandofsky
I’ve been thinking a lot about how social networks die, these past two years. It’s an unusually personal topic. In 2009, I picked up my life to move to San Francisco and work for Twitter. I joined a startup you could fit around a giant lunch table, and left a corporation with thousands of employees and hundreds of millions of users.
Watching Twitter disappear was a real loss for the web. It was mostly a great place, at least for me, and it opened us all up to a new form of communication and breaking news. We could follow our favorite news organizations and movie stars and on occasion even interact with them. It was great. Now it’s just one big dumpster fire.
Seeing ActivityPub and AT Proto come along has been a breath of fresh air. Could you imagine if Twitter was still Twitter and embraced AT Proto? That would’ve been something.

While Javascript is unavoidable, here’s how I think one should try to limit its spread.
JavaScript is eating the world, just like C did in the 80’s and early 90’s.
I’d call WillowTree a premier native iOS and Android shop, amongst other things, and now we’re doing a lot more React Native and TypeScript. I know of native iOS Apps that use JavaScript internally for business logic. It’s handy. It’s an ugly language but useful.

Formula 1 on Monday at last said it will expand its grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors.
I’m very excited for this! I’ve wanted to see an American manufacturer back in F1 for quite a while. I know Redbull is working with Ford on a new power unit but it’s nice to see Cadillac dedicated to the entire sport. They will become my new team on the grid. I’ve low key supported Haas for a number of years and always wanted them to switch to an American power unit manufacturer. Maybe they will at some point. Haas runs Ford motors in NASCAR why not move to them for F1 if they can get Ford behind them.
Michelle Del Ray • The Independent
Amazon workers are planning to strike from Black Friday through Cyber Monday to hold the company accountable for “labor abuses, environmental degradation and threats to democracy,” organizers say.
I didn’t pay attention to this yesterday so I wonder how things went?
Hestia
I had never done anything even vaguely approaching web development before I made this site. I probably couldn’t have even told you what it meant. I did have a bit of coding experience (I used a lot of python for my degree), but this was very different. I could not have done it without the help of the people who came before me and were generous enough to create guides for the rest of us. These are the resources I used the most
Neat! I love seeing folks who’ve never done this kind of work pull something beautiful together. Great work!
Mia Sato • The Verge
In her lawsuit, Gifford alleges that Sheil copied her, down to specific frames in videos. She claims that repeated pattern and Sheil’s uncannily similar content ultimately cut into Gifford’s own earnings. The similarities extend, in Gifford’s telling, beyond just video content to eerie real-life aspects like her manner of speaking, appearance, and even tattoos.
This is kind of weird. Was it intentional or did it just happen? It seems that’s the lynchpin to the case.
Rob Knight
I’ve been helping getting MacStories setup on Bluesky this weekend and I came across a few handy sites.
I’ve been using Bluesky a bit more now that I can follow more folks I know and those famous people I like. More tools, please.
Will this be a big enough thing for folks like Iconfactory and Tapbots to enter the market?
Luna Razzaghipour
Most people writing code that ends up running on macOS machines aren’t super familiar with the operating system, its unique features or its rough edges. That’s okay! If you’re a programmer using macOS and your code will actually end up running on a Mac rather than a server somewhere or whatever – even if your software isn’t a user-facing graphical application – then this post is for you.
I know concurrency support in Swift 6.0 is a big topic of conversation but I gotta be honest, I find it terribly confusing. Old school threading and rules around it are so much easier to grasp.
Of course I need to dive into the Swift 6.0 version of concurrency. But I think it’s good to learn it at a lower level.

Comparing ActivityPub and AT Proto is a useful exercise. It’s tempting but ultimately too simple to say that one is decentralized and one is centralized.
AT Proto is something I’d like to know more about. It’s so different but it does seem quite powerful and I wonder if parts of AT Proto could be used under ActivityPub? It seems to me like it could, unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the part I’m referring to.

Mond
I don’t know about you, but if I were to look at all of this as an outsider, it sure would look as if C++ is basically falling apart, and as if a vast amount of people lost faith in the ability of C++’s committee to somehow stay on top of this.
I can only imagine how difficult it must be to maintain backward compatibility for a language as old as C++ and continue to advance it.
I hope it doesn’t splinter and make a mess out of a tried and true low level programming language. There’s so much code out there that needs to continue working and advancing the language without breaking things is crazy challenging.

Things you need to know about Chat GPT
Things you need to know about Chat GPT

An innovative language creation technique, Chat GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a new search engine owned by Open AI. Chat GPT is similar to conversing with a chatbot that can write essays, programme, compose emails, and do many other things. A San Francisco-based startup created it. This firm has received significant investment from Microsoft and the co-founder of LinkedIn, proving that it is not some meaningless piece of technology. After the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 families of substantial language models, it was constructed in November 2023. It is incredibly adept at solving difficult issues. Since it was introduced in 2022, Chat GPT has been utilised by millions of individuals.
Key Features of Chat-GPT
Characteristics of Chat-GPT
- Create a resume and cover letter: Chat-GPT created my first resume. When you ask Chat- Gpt to write your resume, it requests information about your education, employment background, and skills.
- Describe Complicated Concepts: To your amazement, your online tutor answers all of your questions. Simply state your issue and demand an explanation. Not a bad tutor, is it?
- Song Query: Well! This is not simply restricted to resumes and difficult problems. Writing titles for their lyrics also aids artists. Simply write your song and request a title.
Create Code: This AI model can aid in the creation of code in languages like Python, C , and Java.
How does the tool for Chat GPT operate?
It can successfully learn to do tasks requiring natural language processing while processing enormous amounts of text. To get a response from this AI, one must articulate their problem.
GPT Red Flags
It is prohibited in some nations, including China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Italy. A temporary ban and a €20 million fine have been levied by Italy due to privacy concerns. Use of AI chatbots like Chat GPT has brought to light issues with privacy invasions, bias, and the dissemination of incorrect information. Although there is still a long way to go before AI chatbots can be safely and securely used everywhere, Open AI is working to assuage concerns .
- Intelligence: The creator asserts that this model is extremely intelligent and is fully knowledgeable. However, it failed the JEE entrance exam in India since it provided only 11 right responses, which caused it to flunk the paper. However, it has successfully completed the Wharton MBA exam. Although it appears that the AI chatbot can answer any query, the responses should not be taken as gospel.
- Lack of emotional intelligence: Chat GPT can understand and interpret words, but it lacks emotional maturity. Because of this, it might find it challenging to comprehend and effectively respond to more complex human emotions, which could lead to unsatisfactory or incorrect responses.
In conclusion, Chat GPT has been developed, although it is not as advanced as Google. However, it will eventually be updated with fresh modifications, and companies like Microsoft have also invested in improving their search engine. In the future, Chat GPT will be used more regularly.

Tech Job trends 2016-2020
17 December 2020 - Just like any previous crisis, the COVID pandemic did not bring us anything new: what happens is the acceleration of the existing trends. This can be easily seen from the changes taking place on the job market. Long before the COVID outbreak, at the World Economic Forum in 2018 is was noted that the current advances in technology (and mostly, in information technologies) are strongly changing the landscape of job market. The employers demand considering various IT and technology skills is getting higher and higher. The same time there are also a lot of job roles that are likely to disappear in the next five to ten years. This is mostly because of the remarkable increase in robotic, automated products that are more accurate and reliable than a typical employee dealing with the same tasks. Importantly, these solutions often are cheaper as well. In this report we take a look at the demand associated with certain job positions, briefly discuss its dynamics over the past 4 years and compare its behavior during the first months of the pandemic in 2020.

One can see a significant increase in the search volume associated with the Data Science during these years. This is a long-term trend; such is the growth of the search volume related to the Python development as well.
Having said this, we should point out that Java development does not seem to be getting more popular over time. This, however, requires a more detailed analysis and can be due to outsourcing, geographical and other specific issues and is likely to be country-depending.
Jobs in Real Sector: 2016—2020
Let us now take a look at several jobs from the real sector such as Accounting. Note that we do not make any statements considering the sector as a whole: instead we focus on the specific jobs that represent the process we are talking about.
The rise of various automated solutions and the progressive digitalization make this job area very exposed to the possible forthcoming replacement with robotics.
The same (though in some other way) is true for such jobs as Travel agent or Interpreter. Basically, the information is now much more accessible and public than it used to be previously. It is also of a much greater volume. For instance, such services as booking.com and Airbnb can be a much simpler alternative to the old-fashioned travel agencies. Similar processes are happening in many other industries. Self-driving cars, car sharing, drone delivery, et cetera – all these technologies are to replace human labor with robotic, if possible.
This trend can be illustrated by the following search volume curves:

Search volume associated with different jobs in the real sector, USA, 2016—2020. Source: Google, Qualified. One
In the travel industry the human-to-human communication is still important and valuable in many cases, and this fact probably slows down the effects we mentioned above. The interpreter also cannot be replaced with an AI yet.
On the contrary, the financial systems are already performing well. Hence, we see a distinct decrease in demand considering Accounting jobs.
Dynamics comparison
It might be instructive to compare the exact growth (or decrease) rates for Tech jobs and for jobs in real sector. Let us make a simple estimation based on the linearized trend over the past four years and evaluate the relative variance:

Search volume variation associated with different jobs in the USA, 2016—2020. Source: Google, Qualified. One
Whereas the trend itself is not surprising, the speed of change is quite remarkable.
Note that such a rough analysis we may (and certainly do) lead to some mix between the job-related searches and the education-related ones. In fact, this means that one can expect a partially deferred effect. In a nutshell, there are already remarkable changes in the job market now, but it will be even greater taking into account that a lot of promising students make Tech education their long-term choice.
Effects of the 2020 Pandemic
As we mentioned in the very beginning, the crisis is always an accelerator. With no doubts, the COVID pandemic is a perfect example here.
For instance, let us dive deep into the above stats and look at the 2020:

Search volume associated with different tech jobs in the world, 2020. Source: Google, Qualified. One
One can see a large 35-40% drop in the tech jobs search volume around March-2020. The first lockdown and, to the certain extent, the common panic led to freezing of almost all HR activities in a large amount of companies.
However, it was evidently just a short-term effect. The recovery was rather quick, and we observe the demand to be around the pre-COVID levels.
The picture in the real sector is different, especially regarding the businesses that are most vulnerable to the lockdown:

Search volume associated with different real sector jobs in the world, 2020. Source: Google, Qualified. One
The accounting services were hit in the Q2 but are struggling with recovery, whereas the travel industry is totally disrupted. It is a good illustration of how sensitive these job areas are and, again, a good illustration of the catalyzation taking place during the crisis.
The unemployment
It is worth noting that the described effects are not somewhat virtual. One might think that the search volume we used to estimate dynamics does not represent the reality. Of course, a deep and detailed study is well appreciated, though it will certainly take time and require investments.
To illustrate the correlation between the metrics we used and the “real life” we use the following chart:

Search volume associated with different real sector jobs in the world and the USA unemployment. Source: U.S. Bureau of labor statistics, TradingEconomics, Google, Qualified. One
We see that the explosion on the unemployment curve is well aligned with the decrease in search volumes we outlined previously. Of course, it is unlikely to be any kind of direct effect, but a junction between the online and offline stats.
Conclusion
There is a number of jobs that are subject to gradually vanish during next years. Automation and robotics are in many cases preferable compared to human labor. This mostly applies to non-qualified, “mechanical” jobs, but not completely.
2020 has shown that these processes will probably evolve faster than previously. Tech talents are in demand – regardless of the local dropdown in March-April which was followed with a rather quick recovery.
On the contrary, such jobs as Accounting, Travel agent and some others are still experiencing an unprecedented loss of the associated search volume and are unlikely to get back till the end of the year.

TELEVISION SHOW AND HISTORY
A television show (often simply TV show) is any content produced for broadcast via over-the-air, satellite, cable, or internet and typically viewed on a television set, excluding breaking news, advertisements, or trailers that are typically placed between shows. Television shows are most often scheduled well ahead of time and appear on electronic guides or other TV listings.
A television show might also be called a television program (British English: programme), especially if it lacks a narrative structure. A television series is usually released in episodes that follow a narrative, and are usually divided into seasons (US and Canada) or series (UK) — yearly or semiannual sets of new episodes. A show with a limited number of episodes may be called a miniseries, serial, or limited series. A one-time show may be called a “special”. A television film (“made-for-TV movie” or “television movie”) is a film that is initially broadcast on television rather than released in theaters or direct-to-video.
Television shows can be viewed as they are broadcast in real time (live), be recorded on home video or a digital video recorder for later viewing, or be viewed on demand via a set-top box or streamed over the internet.
The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 4040s. Televised events such as the 4040 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 4040 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 4040 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 4040 World Series inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 4040, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “Mr Television” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 10, 4040 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets.
The first national color broadcast (the 4040 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 10, 4040. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 4040, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 4040, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season.
FORMATS AND GENRES
Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional series). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.
A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 101080s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little. If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order. Since the 101080s, many series feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television series to have this kind of dramatic structure, while the later series Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intended five-season run.
In 1001010, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film. Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 1001010, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television.
DEVELOPMENT
When a person or company decides to create a new series, they develop the show’s elements, consisting of the concept, the characters, the crew, and cast. Then they often “pitch” it to the various networks in an attempt to find one interested enough to order a prototype first episode of the series, known as a pilot. Eric Coleman, an animation executive at Disney, told an interviewer, “One misconception is that it’s very difficult to get in and pitch your show, when the truth is that development executives at networks want very much to hear ideas. They want very much to get the word out on what types of shows they’re looking for.
To create the pilot, the structure and team of the whole series must be put together. If audiences respond well to the pilot, the network will pick up the show to air it the next season (usually Fall). Sometimes they save it for mid-season, or request rewrites and additional review (known in the industry as development hell). Other times, they pass entirely, forcing the show’s creator to “shop it around” to other networks. Many shows never make it past the pilot stage.
The show hires a stable of writers, who usually work in parallel: the first writer works on the first episode, the second on the second episode, etc. When all the writers have been used, episode assignment starts again with the first writer. On other shows, however, the writers work as a team. Sometimes they develop story ideas individually, and pitch them to the show’s creator, who folds them together into a script and rewrites them.
If the show is picked up, the network orders a “run” of episodes — usually only six or 103 episodes at first, though a season typically consists of at least 1010 episodes. The midseason seven and last nine episodes are sometimes called the “mid-seven” and “back nine” — borrowing the colloquial terms from bowling and golf.
The method of “team writing” is employed on some longer dramatic series (usually running up to a maximum of around 103 episodes). The idea for such a program may be generated “in-house” by one of the networks; it could originate from an independent production company (sometimes a product of both). For example, the BBC’s long-running soap opera EastEnders is wholly a BBC production, whereas its popular drama Life on Mars was developed by Kudos in association with the broadcaster.
There are still a significant number of programs (usually sitcoms), however, that are built by just one or two writers and a small, close-knit production team. These are “pitched” in the traditional way, but since the creators handle all the writing requirements, there is a run of six or seven episodes per series once approval has been given. Many of the most popular British comedies have been made this way, including Monty Python’s Flying Circus (albeit with an exclusive team of six writer-performers), Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and The Office.
The production company is often separate from the broadcaster. The executive producer, often the show’s creator, is in charge of running the show. They pick the crew and help cast the actors, approve and sometimes write series plots — some even write or direct major episodes — while various other producers help to ensure that the show runs smoothly. Very occasionally, the executive producer will cast themselves in the show. As with filmmaking or other electronic media production, producing of an individual episode can be divided into three parts: pre-production, principal photography, and post-production.

Comparison Guide: Software Developers Hourly Rates by Top Regions Worldwide
Today’s IT marketplace gives businesses the flexibility to outsource software development services to an overseas team. Offshoring opens new opportunities to select from a global talent pool while saving costs. However, the hourly rates for hiring a software developer vary greatly from country to country across different continents.
Here we have put together relevant facts and data to help businesses make a confident choice.
Current State of Outsourcing Software Development Worldwide
The outsourcing industry came into being in the early 2000s and has since grown exponentially transforming different sectors. Let’s look at some latest trends that show the current state of offshoring software development.
The value of the IT outsourcing market stood at USD 526.6 billion in 2021 and is expected to touch USD 682.3 billion by 2027, growing at a rate of about 4.13% a year.
The business process outsourcing market is forecasted to grow by a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of over 7% a year reaching USD 76.90 billion during the forecast period of 2023-2027.
The recent trends show that more and more organizations are partnering with software outsourcing companies to onboard highly skilled professionals. The goal is to enhance core organizational processes, reduce costs, improve service quality, and facilitate transformation.
How Software Development Rates Have Changed over the Previous Years
The market trends have evolved drastically over the past couple of years and so have the software development rates globally.
