Episode 5
The Handmaid’s Tale is not a comedy, but this week there were a bunch of moments that were so darkly funny I couldn’t help but laugh. Let’s just run down this weeks highlights.
First victim this week was Lawrence. Poor Lawrence; he told Bell that no one liked or respected him and then found out that it was actually the other way around. To add insult to injury Lawrence finally learned that New Bethlehem was being used as a trap. Lawrence has done it again built a world that he believed would be better, only to have it corrupted by these black hearted little fuckers. Pretty sure that Lawrence will be happy to help Jezebels go boom boom once he squeezes the details out of June and Moira. These bombs at Jezebels are giving me a very season 4 vibe. Given that Blaine delivered those in Chicago, we’d all better hope that he continues to stay away from Jezebels in the future
Janine showed up to be reunited with June and Moira, with June asking her to come along and Moira saying no. It all seemed very reminiscent of Moira sneaking June back from Chicago. Just like Chicago, I’m not sure our Janine is going to be making it out. The fact that the letters got locked in the safe, speaks to how these women's voices are silenced once again.
June and Moira had a spat over who has the most PTSD and then almost on cue a beligerent rapey guardian walked in to bust up their discussion, giving the two of them the opportunity to work their shit out old school. Cleansing.
Turns out Serena will sell out her principles, and her eternal soul to the Prince of Darkness for a library. Guess all Tuello really ever needed to do was get her a voucher for Barnes & Noble and the whole thing would have been done and dusted season 5. Live and learn.
Last but not least, Nick Blaine stopped by the hospital to tie up some loose ends. Highlights for me included Blaine being called “an angel” (wrong kind of angel hun), and Nick talking about the little fellas doggy. They really cranked the volume up to 11 on this one. Apparently he’s just an innocent little guardian, who REALLY admires Nick and the first thing he wants when he wakes up is to see his dog. This was so obvious in it’s efforts to convince audiences that Blaine was now just murdering random innocents, that I laughed out loud. Is this The Handmaid’s Tale or Old Yeller? Fuck that stormtrooper. My black little heart can’t wait for the day that Blaine burns the whole place to ash.
This will obviously have wider repercussions, but I can’t help but notice that ALL of this is the direct result of Luke and Moiras decision to lie to June and fuck off to Mayday. Once again Nick is left to clean up the mess, he’ll get no thanks of course and end up paying the price. But honestly, what would you have him do? Tuello won’t let him leave across the border, he had to protect June, Luke and Moira, and last but not least, if he’s found to be a rebel not only he, but all the members of his household will end up on the wall. So yeah. Not really feeling the villain vibe here.
As a side note, this episode kicked in at less than 40 minutes which is pretty poor, especially for a last season. Fans have been buttered up by the PR machine for over a month about how jam packed this season was going to be and how this was Nick and June’s season. Here I am watching ridiculously short episodes with milked sections of dialogue tying up precious time and once again crammed with Luke and June trying to resuscitate their long dead relationship. It was bad in season 4, it was worse in season 5, now it’s just torture. Blaine is a fan favourite, where is he? Nick and June and Serena and June are fan favourite character dynamics, where are they? Exactly how is this a season designed for the fans? Apart from June reuniting with her mother and episode 3, the season so far has been somewhat lack lustre. Perhaps it would have time to get off the ground, but with episodes this short, it barely stands a chance.

HL Fic Library 🟠 1980's Fics
Remember to leave kudos and a comment on the fics you enjoyed to show your appreciation! You can find the library's other recs here.
⭐ We Were Such Fools by kiddle / @bluejeanlouis (M, 98k)
Rule #1: The Rewind Machine cannot be used to change the past, only to experience it. History will reset itself to the original timeline every 24 hours.
On his fiftieth birthday, two things are consuming Harry’s mind: what he’s going to make the kids for dinner tonight, and the fact that his marriage is crumbling at his feet.
So, when his best friend gifts him the trip of a lifetime, Harry chooses to venture off to the summer that set his life on its course—all the way back in 1987, California.
It only took him one summer to fall in love with his husband the first time around. How hard could starting all over really be?
⭐ modern love by prettyoddnjh (T, 72k)
It's August 9th, 1985. "Shout" by Tears for Fears is the top song on the Billboard charts, Back to the Future has been the #1 film in the country for five weeks straight, and Harry has just moved to what he thinks is probably the shittiest town in the Midwest.
Louis has been wasting away in East Chicago for over five years, Harry is the most exciting thing that's ever happened to him, and both of them are hiding a dangerous secret from their best friend: they're, like, totally sprung on each other.
⭐ The World Turned Upside Down by dogslpdi / @dogsliampaynedoesntinstagram (E, 71k)
In September 1984, Harry Styles starts at Manchester Polytechnic with two goals: to take pictures and to join the Lesbian and Gay Society. He’s never paid much attention to the news, but everyone he meets in Manchester supports the miners. He realises how right they are when he meets Louis Tomlinson, a striking miner who flirts with him. A month later they are both at the founding meeting of Manchester Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, trying to bring down the government. Through letters and visits they build a relationship, in a world very much not of their own choosing.
Manchester and Doncaster in the 1980s are grim, hopeful and alive. Niall is president of the Young Labour club, Nick Grimshaw is in love with the singer of an up and coming band, Fizzy wants to know more about the women of Greenham Common and Harry and Louis are brave.
A Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners/Pride AU.
⭐ Among Lavender Fields by @homosociallyyours (E, 70k)
At twenty-one, Louis Tomlinson is more than ready to shed the girl next door image that's been with her since her entry into film in her childhood, but with a mother and father steeped in Hollywood tradition it's felt impossible. Meanwhile, Harry Styles is a young, struggling musician new to London, friendless yet eager for the next phase of her life to begin.
When French director Marie Coutard casts the two of them in her film, it's a chance for both to break away from the people they've been. Together, they struggle through an acting process that's new and unfamiliar for both of them, learning more than they could've imagined about themselves along the way. As they spend long days picking lavender and long nights sharing the things they've never been able to tell anyone else, their love blooms.
Will the flower fade, or will the love they make among lavender fields be one they carry with them to the end?
⭐ HL 80s nyc verse (series) by superglass (M, 51k)
He expects his usual warm welcome from Sue, always drying off a glass or cleaning the taps with a dirty rag. Instead, to his shock, a man is behind the bar, pouring a Whiskey Sour for a regular Harry always sees at this time of night. He’s no doubt his age; he can tell by the smoothness of his skin, the muscles in his biceps, the way his hair is swept back in a style not unlike a young James Dean, exemplifying the cut of his cheekbones and the sharpness at his jaw.
As he approaches the bar, quietly since he’s not wearing his shoes, he blurts it out— “Where’s Sue? Is she alright? She’s not dead, is she?”
The barkeep, wide-eyed at first but quickly growing amused, smiles at him, eyeing his dress, tousled wet hair and smudged makeup with a curl in his lip. “Darling,” he says, completely ignoring his question, “a leather jacket with a dress like that? Are you mad?”
or In the midst of the AIDS crisis, Harry meets Louis after coming home from a drag ball. 80s NYC au.
⭐ what this world is about by isntrio / @bloubird (E, 34k)
An eighties American high school AU; there are first times, football games, and feelings.
Alternatively titled: the beginning.
⭐ What Happened to 'Never Say Die'? by kiddle / @bluejeanlouis (T, 28k)
The ‘80s were one of the best decades to be a teenager in America. Just ask anyone who's seen a John Hughes movie. Louis would beg to differ. At least today he would, while he was stuck cleaning out his family's basement - part of his grounding after a senior prank gone wrong. But when he finds a box containing details of the biggest unsolved crime in Luna Hills, he and his friends decide to sneak out for one last adventure before they're all off to college. That is, as long as the mayor, who also happens to be Louis' mother, doesn't stop them before they discover the truth.
Or, a coming of age American AU inspired by classic ‘80s movies like The Goonies and Stand By Me where everyone has a secret and no one wants to get caught.
⭐ Never Meant to Be So Bad to You by harriblou (M, 27k)
Louis hated Harry and his stupid confidence and his handsome face and his deep voice and his stupid jeans and his stupid smile and his stupid existence. He hated Harry, always had and always will. They’d never gotten along and Louis wasn’t sure how it started, but he knows that Harry was put onto this earth to bug the hell out of Louis. Being trapped inside of an arcade with him was hell and it hadn't been a full minute.
or the 80's Arcade AU that no one asked for about how louis and harry hate each other (not really) and have an intense rivalry over video games. featuring liam niall and zayn as the friends who help them sort themselves out.
⭐ Lean On My Shoulder (I See Myself With You) by Jennifer_Kaid / @poetsreprieve (E, 19k)
Speaking of the views, there was someone on his balcony. The sun was still setting, making this person look even more ethereal. They seemed to be at content at being alone. Harry watched as they watered the plants, they certainly didn't look like they were amongst the help.
Curiosity got the best of him and he decided to invade this stranger's quiet time; the Prince could be selfish sometimes.
"When you love something, you help them grow."
⭐ enter exit (enter) by @louisandthealien (M, 17k)
When he’s finally in the hotel, crammed into the tiny phone booth, all he can do is stare at the faded paper sign glaring down at him from the wall.
1 Minute = 11.82 USD Mexico --> United States
He has less than a minute to break his boyfriend’s heart, and it’s going to cost him twelve bucks to do it.
There’s sand under his fingernails as he dials the number.
⭐ after hours by @muldxr (E, 16k)
Harry moves like lightning as he slides the books off the shelves into the open, waiting abyss of his bag. Then, as Louis clears the other end of the exhibit just as quickly, he moves on to the display case next to it and the one after that. One flimsy book practically flies open as he picks it up, the paper held together by feeble strings on the spine. He leaves it behind. Not worth selling.
Or, a crime au set in 1980s Chicago.
⭐ honey, honey by resurrectdead / @artxghoul (E, 13k)
It just feels weird to not be able to tell his own mum about how nervous yet over the fucking moon happy he is right now, because this tape isn’t for neither Niall nor Liam. It’s for, well. It’s for Harry bloody Styles. The boy that makes his insides feel like sunshine.
Or: It’s 1988, and Louis has to make a mixtape for Harry
⭐ Haunting Beauty by 4ureyesonly28 / @evilovesyou (G, 6k)
It’s 1988. Harry has just finished his first year of teaching English and looks forward to a relaxed break. Louis is a poltergeist and has different plans for Harry’s summer.

“A friend of mine is a well-known economist at a leading American university. He's also the gatekeeper for an elite doctoral program in his field. Asked once what he valued most in candidates for his program, he said, "an undergraduate degree in Classics." Homer and Virgil, of course, have very little to do with things like debt-deflation theory. But my friend's reasoning is, in fact, quite shrewd.
Since economics is a human (i.e., social) science, its practitioners should first know how to be actual human beings before learning their specialized skills. A formation in the classics or any of the other humanities is an immersion in beauty and knowledge. It has no utility other than enlarging the soul. But that achievement-the ennobling of a soul, the enlarging of the human spirit to revere the heritage of human excellence and to love things outside itself-is something no technical skill can accomplish.
As Leo Strauss once wrote, "liberal education is concerned with the souls of men, and therefore has little or no use for machines ... [it] consists in learning to listen to still and small voices and therefore in becoming deaf to loudspeakers."(18) A liberal education—a balanced experience of the humanities, art, music, mathematics, and the natural sciences—is designed to form a mature "liberal" adult; liberal in the original sense, meaning free as opposed to slave. Thus for Strauss, "liberal education is the counter-poison ... to the corroding effects of mass culture, to its inherent tendency to produce nothing" but specialists without vision or heart.(19)
Scholars like Anthony Esolen, Allan Bloom, Neil Postman, Matthew Crawford, and Alasdair MacIntyre, each in his own way and for different reasons, have all said similar things. For all of them, the point of a truly good education, from pre-K to graduate school, is to form students to think and act as fully rounded, mature, and engaged human beings. In other words, as adult persons of character.
As Matthew Crawford puts it, "Education requires a certain capacity for asceticism, but more fundamentally it is erotic. Only beautiful things lead us out of our addictive self-focus to join the world beyond our heads."(20) But the dilemma of postmodern life is that we can't agree on what a fully rounded, mature "human being" is—or should be. The fragmentation in American culture runs too deep. Recent battles over imposing gender ideology in school curricula and rewriting and politicizing civics and American history textbooks simply prove the point. So does the "progressive" intellectual conformism in so many of our university faculties.
Meanwhile, as American student skills decline in global comparisons, more and more stress is placed on developing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) competence at earlier student ages. There's nothing wrong with this in principle. Technical skills are an important part of modern life. But as we've already seen, American trust in the promise of technology is robust and naive to the point of being a character flaw. And a real education involves more profound life lessons than training workers and managers to be cogs in an advanced economy.”

::::::::::
The front door whumped closed behind Billy and he rushed into his room. The envelope in his hand was burning his fingers, and even though Harrington wasn't even home, he didn’t want him to see, even by accident, what it held inside—or what he was about to do with the contents. Their shared apartment was supposed to be empty for at least one hour, since Harrington had some extra classes or something.
When they both started at Northwestern at Chicago earlier that fall, both gotten in with a basketball scholarship, Harrington had soon been casually looking for a roommate. His dad owned the apartment where he lived in. Everything was top-notch and new, but apparently the dadio had started asking for rent and it had been too much for the golden boy. He'd pestered Billy about it, trying to sell the place with his very own room, a bathroom he'd have to share only with Harrington, their own washing machine, dryer and dishwasher. All luxury in Billy's eyes. He'd been tempted from day one, but it sounded too good to be true. Then, when he talked with someone about it, turned out that Harrington hadn't mentioned about the situation to anyone else. It was suspicious and at first Billy thought Harrington was pitying him. But the dorm was, well, a dorm, and having privacy, especially with the secret Billy had been harboring for quite a while now, was a luxury the dorm didn't have. So, Billy had moved his stuff in into the room that already had a lush bed, a proper desk and chair ready for him. And it turned out the rent wasn't bad either, considering all that. Billy could cover it easily with the pay he got from being a barista at the campus cafe and he was still left enough for everything else, including the occasional treat like the one he had in his hands right now.
Now Billy was about to use his privacy for all it was worth. He'd have to be haste about it, though.
He got to his room and locked the door behind him. Locking his room door wasn’t something he frequently did, simply because it reminded him too much of the past. One he was now effectively free of. But this was a such a secret that he couldn't have anyone learn about it.
Billy placed the envelope on his table, tossed his jacket on the chair, and just stared at the envelope. He'd waited for it for an agonizing six weeks. And now that it was finally here, his thoughts were a rushing blur in his mind.
Today was the day he had waited for ever since that one day when everything had suddenly made sense.
- - -
Billy had seen the corset originally in his aunt Marjorie’s closet when they had visited her with his mom. He knew he'd been snooping that day, looking for something exactly like that, tempted by the free sexuality of an attractive single woman. He'd taken it from the hanger and for a moment admired it, how the silky fabric felt in his hands, how the lace on the sides was a bit rough, the cups for breasts in the right shape waiting to be filled, and imagined what it looked like on her. Then he’d looked at the mirror and, out of a whim, draped it around himself a little.
His pre-teen body, that was just about to take him through the most painful change of his life, had suddenly failed him miserably at the sight of his own image with the garment and he'd come to his pants unexpectedly.
When they’d gotten home, his mom had tried to hide it, but she wasn’t fast enough to get the pants into the washing machine. Of course Neil had seen them.
But the cost of that incident did nothing to the reason Billy had come. It wasn't because he'd seen it or dreamed of seeing it on a woman.
The image tattooed on his retinas was himself in the mirror, the corset loosely draped over his shirt. The feeling it had aroused in him felt so wrong in all the ways possible, but it was always the one that tickled his mind so much that whenever he jerked off, seeing himself wearing a corset like that finally pushed him over the edge.
He'd been way too scared to do anything about it until that one date.
Her name had been Sheri or Cherry or something like that, Billy couldn't remember anymore. She'd been nice and good looking for a girl. Maybe if he’d been into girls, he might've gone out with her again. They'd had fun, but not the way she'd hoped for, probably.
To him, though, it had been an eye-opening experience.
She'd been wearing the most beautiful eye shadow Billy had ever seen. Sheen of silver on her upper eyelid and a touch of glitter in the outer corner of her eye. Her whole makeup and hair had been immaculate, her style and clothes taken straight from Madonna's music video – or that's how she'd advertised it.
Billy had hated Madonna the moment he first heard her sing. Her squeaky, nasal voice made his skin crawl. But when he saw the video for 'Like a Virgin', he had to agree with his date. Madonna looked nice – and yes, he’d liked everything she'd been wearing in the video.
- - -
Billy took down a box from the upper shelf of his closet. He had opened it when it had arrived, just to quickly check the measurements were right. They had been, and since he wanted everything to be perfect before doing anything, on the upper shelf the box had gone.
He'd done some other purchases he could do fairly innocently, telling it was for a girlfriend if anyone asked. All of them had been stacked away into a fabric pouch and behind the box.
But now all his purchases were on his table, the box, the envelope and the fabric pouch. Finally.
He could hear his heart pounding in his ears as he opened the lid of the box. There were three plastic bags in it.
He took out both of the smaller ones, placing them on his bed, smiling. The third, a bigger one, he set on the floor.
He took the envelope from the table, opened it, and pulled out a small velvet pouch, setting it carefully on the table. He opened it and pulled out the contents. The glittering bracelet that emerged was an exact copy of the one from another Madonna video, 'Material Girl'.
Billy moved it under the light of his desk lamp, and the bracelet came to life. Light sparkled around him, lighting up his entire room in all the colors of the rainbow.
He looked at all the things he had laid out. He felt something shifting as he was overcome with emotions. Something that he’d soon know for sure. He wasn’t sure how much things would change, maybe for the better. Or worse, depending on the point of view.
Moving to Hicksville had definitely made most things worse at first. But not everything. There, he'd concluded that he wanted to try this. And now that he didn’t have to hide anymore the way he'd still had to back there, he’d sought this one specific mail-order catalog that in the past would’ve gotten him a beat-down of a lifetime.
But now he finally had it all. The things that he’d been jerking off with only the images of them in his mind until now. Having to imagine wearing something like that had been a kick as itself, but seeing all of them on display, ready for him to wear... He was already hard just for the thought alone.
For a brief moment, he considered if he should take the edge off now so that he wouldn't mess the garments unintentionally. Because that would totally suck since he couldn’t wash them without Steve inevitably seeing them, eventually. And then there would be a stain in them to remind him of this secret having to remain a secret, probably for forever.
So, he sat on his bed, unzipped his jeans and took care of it. It didn't take long, all he had to do was to look at the garments on the bed, touch them, and think how he'd look like wearing it all, and after just a few fast strokes he was already spilling himself on his hand.
He felt a little ashamed to have gotten so aroused over clothes he wasn't even yet wearing and especially being released so quickly from the thought alone. It felt wrong. And yet it was so right.
After cleaning himself with tissues from a box he held on the nightstand, he sat by his table and opened one of the fabric pouch. One by one he placed mascara, eye shadow and a lipstick on his desk.
He wanted to make this occasion perfect, and he knew it meant he had to have it all, make-up included. The whole thing was too exciting to him, so he decided not to do his nails this time. He would just rush with them, which would lead him not letting them dry long enough and then he’d stain the clothes. Besides, he had time to play with these things for the rest of his life.
Putting on make-up was something he'd practiced several times when he'd been alone. He’d used magazines as samples, and he’d gotten pretty good with it. He stood in front of the big mirror he had in his room and spread the eye shadow on his upper eyelids, put on the mascara – even though his lashes were already thick and dark and he really didn’t need it. The lipstick was bright pink, because it had been on sale. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway, though. It was all about the thought. But it was a bonus that the shade looked great on him.
When he was done with the make-up, he took off his clothes. He took the first smaller bag from the bed and took the contents out: dusty rose, silky under-bust corset with hard metal bones keeping it in shape and panties, both decorated with lace. He felt the fabric between his fingers. The lace felt rough against his fingertips, just as it had all those years ago. It made his arousal raise its head again.
He set the corset on the bed and took the panties in his hands, admiring them for a moment first. He bit his lip while he looked at himself in the mirror as he pulled the panties up and tucked his dick in them. They could barely hold him in because he was so hard already – again.
He opened the other small bag and pulled out a pair of thin, thigh-high white socks. He rubbed the fabric between his fingers. It was slippery and delicate. He sat on the bed and pulled them on one by one. They had sticky lines of something inside the upper part of the sock that kept them up. He touched the smooth surface of his leg with his fingers. Just a moment ago, it had been rough and hairy, and now smooth as silk.
Then he took the biggest bag and pulled out a pair of pink pumps with five-inch heels. He’d tried them on a few times. At first, he had barely managed to stand up and taking any steps had been impossible without wobbling or almost breaking his ankles. But soon he’d learned that he had to take each step with conviction, heel first. Not that he had walked anywhere else, but in the small space in the middle of his room. But walk a small space back and forth enough many times and you master the art.
He'd put them on last, though. Because it was time for the main attraction.
Taking the corset from the bed and looking at it brought a small smile to his face. He'd waited for this for so long. He loosened the laces and pulled it on. It sat right on his hips. He turned away from the mirror to keep himself from coming too soon and tried to remember how to adjust the laces in the back to make it fit. He had to adjust them a few times before it did.
He took the gloves from the table and pulled them on. They made his arms silky smooth, just like the socks did to his legs.
The last thing was the bracelet. He struggled a little with the lock now that the gloves made his fingers a little more clumsy, but he finally managed it.
Then he turned to look at himself in the mirror – and was overcome with emotions.
His face looked so nice with the makeup. Seeing his painted lips and thinking about kissing through the mirror made him shiver. If he could kiss himself right now, he would, with no hesitation.
He moved his gaze lower and ran his fingers over the bones of the corset. It wasn't as tight as it should've been, but it was tight enough that he'd had to struggle a little when he tried to breathe. He cupped his hand around his other pec and squeezed it. The nipple hardened at the touch of the smooth surface of his gloves and he teased it a little with his finger, forcing a heavy breath out of his mouth.
His dick twitched in the panties, making the fabric stretch around it. The panties weren't a perfect fit, obviously, and having his dick tucked in in its hardened state was painful – though in a good way. He could take it for the sake of the show. It was all so worth it.
He couldn’t help but to let his gaze linger between the corset and the panties. He looked good in them in a whole different way he hadn’t expected. It had been so many years since the incident at his aunt’s that his memory of it had faded a bit. Now he was about to get some new images to remember.
Finally, he could draw his gaze away from his torso and moved lower to admire the panties that were straining under the size of his hard-on. He could see his red and aching dick through the lace in them. He looked lower still at the rose-colored socks that made his legs feel so smooth. The upper parts of the socks had big, also rose-colored, bows on the side, and even that tiny detail felt nice. Felt right.
And how beautiful his feet were in the lethal heels. His toes were visible through the open ends, but being clad in those socks, they, too, looked nice.
Feminine. Pretty.
He looked and felt pretty. He’d never been allowed to feel like that. Pimping and pruning himself had always been just something faggots did, according to Neil. And if his normal routine had been too much for Neil, seeing him now would’ve made Neil explode.
But here, far away, now, he could finally feel it, to look and feel feminine and pretty.
And it was everything.
He turned around and looked at his back in the mirror over his shoulder.
The way the laces pulled the corset to hug his shape, the way the hem of the panties curved over his ass and how the heels made his whole ass stand out in a whole new way. The posture made his shins look really nice, too.
A dirty thought of him wanting to fuck himself penetrated his mind. Girls did nothing to him, but this? This did so many things to him.
Seeing the feminine garments, the shoes, the bracelet, the make-up – everything – he would’ve fucked himself right there and then if he could have. That, if anything, felt wrong, but the longer he looked at himself from different angles, it also felt good.
And today, and all the times in the future, he would no longer be coming to a faded image or feelings that were sparked by something that happened far back in the past. Now, he could make it special whenever he wanted, to see himself wearing it all again and again, lingerie and make-up, to come to the feeling of being pretty in a feminine way – that was as close as he could ever be to fuck himself, and he was okay with that.
Maybe one day he could show all this to someone who would understand. Maybe he could then be fucked by that someone while they called him pretty...
There was a sudden, hard knock on his door that made him wince.
“Hey, Hargrove, Max is here. She says you had promised to take her somewhere.”
Oh shit.

National Ferris Wheel Day
Ferris wheels have always been associated with childhood; it’s no surprise how loved they are around the world, as people who aren’t afraid of heights get to see the horizon of the world around them.
Ferris wheels, however, are a most recent invention over the past 200 years. That’s why National Ferris Wheel Day exists! National Ferris Wheel Day is all about teaching people the history and cultural significance of this magnificent machine.
Learn about National Ferris Wheel Day
National Ferris Wheel Day has been designed to honor George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr, who is, of course, the inventor of the Ferris Wheel! We’re sure that most people reading this have fond memories of going on a Ferris Wheel, whether at a theme park or at a tourist attraction. Ferris Wheels are a lot of fun, coming in different sizes and enabling us to see for miles and miles! You may have even had your first kiss on a Ferris Wheel!
Since the Ferris Wheel has been invented, there have been some incredible Ferris Wheels built around the world. This includes Canada’s Niagara Skywheel, which enables you to look over the Niagara Falls. It’s truly breathtaking. You also have The London Eye, which looks over London’s Thames River. Another famous Ferris Wheel is the Tianjin Eye Ferris Wheel in Tianjin, China. What makes this Ferris Wheel so spectacular is the fact that is erected over a bridge that spans the Hair River. There are so many incredible Ferris Wheels, so we definitely recommend doing a bit of digging online on this day. You could even make a bucket list of Ferris Wheels that you would like to visit!
History of National Ferris Wheel Day
George Washington Gale Ferris invented the Ferris wheel in 1893 when at age 33, he introduced his invention to the World’s Columbian Exposition.
This exhibition was also known as the Chicago World’s Fair, where people at the time were celebrating the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ landing in the New World. When people saw it for the first time, they immediately saw it as the United States’ version of the Effiel Tower.
Ferris’s creation stood at an enormous 260 feet high, with 36 cars encased with glass and locked doors, and weighed in at a total 26,000 pounds. After the exhibition, the Ferris wheel ran from June until October 1863. It wasn’t until 1894 that the Ferris wheel got taken down completely.
The dismantled part of the Ferris wheel was actually made into good use; During World War I, the scraps were used to make battleships, specifically the U.S.S Illinois. Now, Ferris wheels are everywhere, from carnivals, festivals, and can be seen at any kind of celebration.
This holiday honors his birthday as well as his invention. People celebrate this holiday by taking the time to ride the Ferris wheel and feel the wonder and excitement that comes from it.
Some make it a lover’s date, as it is the perfect place to gain some intimacy. Others come with their friends and family to take part in the event and some just take the time to learn about the different kinds of Ferris wheels around the world, which is fun in its own right.
How to Celebrate National Ferris Wheel Day
Head to your closest fairground, theme park, or showground and go straight to the Ferris wheel for some awesome fun! Bring your friends, family or lover with you when you go, and make it a date.
The theme parks that have been built over the years are truly incredible. If you plan ahead of time, you can make sure that National Ferris Wheel Day is one to remember by visiting one of the most thrilling theme parks in your area. Not only will you be able to go on a Ferris Wheel but there will be plenty of other rides for you to enjoy as well, from rollercoasters to dark rides and themed experiences. There is something for everyone!
Take some time to learn about the ingenuity involved with inventing the Ferris wheel, and look up all the most well-known Ferris wheels from around the world. Host a party and make the theme all about Ferris wheels.
You can also take some time to learn about the different facts associated with Ferris Wheels. If you take a look online, you will see that there are some really interesting facts. For example, did you know that the largest Ferris wheel in the world is found in Las Vegas? It is called the High Roller and it is 550 feet tall! You can also look up some of the more classic Ferris Wheels. For example, there is the Wonder Wheel of Coney Island. This Ferris Wheel has been standing for over 100 years now and it was constructed by the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company. You’ll find it in New York.
Of course, the day has been chosen because it is the same date as the birthday of the inventor, George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. So, why not learn a bit more about him? A civil engineer, born in Galesburg, Illinois, George is known for the Ferris wheel concept and the original Chicago Ferris Wheel. He lived a short life, dying at the age of 37-years-old. This was shortly after the death of his father. Both died of typhoid fever. Despite having a short life, George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. certainly achieved a lot, and you will find a lot of interesting reads about his achievements.
If you’re an avid collector, start collecting antiques associated with Ferris wheels and help share your love of Ferris wheels with your friends.

[AUDIO TAKEN FROM THE ARCHIVES OF DR. LIARA T’SONI.]
I have been inside the Ziggurat many times since it first appeared, since Shepard became the Emperor six hundred years ago. Were I younger and still a scientist, I would have loved to have spent months inside it, studying it, trying to learn from it. Such things are, of course, not allowed. It is not just that the Emperor forbids it, but the building itself. It doesn't want to be studied.
But perhaps, deep down, I’ll always be that researcher that she found on Therum. I can’t help but catalog all the things I’ve noticed in my head.
What is the Ziggurat? It is a massive structure located at the zero-zero point in the city of Chicago on Earth. It is the imperial residence of the Emperor and her family. It appeared in the city in 2190 CE, about a year after the end of the Reaper War, the very moment Shepard made her transition into the Emperor. From what I know, the city was hit hard by the war, but many of the historical buildings survived. When the Ziggurat appeared, it was as if the city expanded around it, moving in order to accommodate it.
On the outside, it has all the characteristics of typical Reaper constructions: black metal with points of glowing blue lights. There are smaller towers around it that house the Revenants and Machine-Sisters. The sheer size of the building is overwhelming. I have seen Reapers enter it through immense hangar doors on the outside.
The inside of the Ziggurat is incomprehensible. It doesn’t obey the laws of our reality. For starters, its interior is infinitely larger than its exterior. And it is truly infinite. (Or perhaps, I perceive it to be infinite because I am not of the Emperor’s kind.) Navigating it is next to impossible unless one is uniquely attuned to its strangeness. It took me a couple of centuries to learn how to properly traverse it and even then, I have not seen all of it nor do I think I ever will. At times, I have been accompanied by Lady Nemesis, Retribution Incarnate and the Emperor's Wrath. According to her, she navigates the entirety of the structure on a daily basis. There are certain procedures and rituals she must conduct to ensure the building's maintenance.
Unsurprisingly, she won’t tell me what those are, but has said "It's better than standing at the Crossroads, doing nothing."
There is no light inside the Ziggurat. Nothing seeps out into the main space, any light seems to be contained to their respective areas. It is also very, very cold. The walls in the upper level form these immense valleys, opening up into voids. But the angles are strange, unsettling. The Emperor's daughters are everywhere. I’ll never forget when I first visited, how it felt like the walls were pressing against my mind and it felt like every one of my thoughts was being listened to.
[FOR A MOMENT, THERE IS SILENCE. THEN, A BREATH. LIARA CONTINUES SPEAKING.]
I can’t help but think about what my mother said about Indoctrination, about what it was like being inside Sovereign. Being inside the Ziggurat is like that, but worse somehow. It is hostile to organic life. But, I am fine, for the most part. It must be the Emperor’s influence. My presence is tolerated, but it is clear that the building does not want me to overstay my welcome.
I’ve heard it described as a Place of Power, much like the Oldest House in New York City, also on Earth. I have also heard of a place called the Oceanview Motel that connects all these places, like a hub. (Is there a reason why most of these strange places are located on Earth?)
The closer one gets to the core, the throne room, the texture begins to change. The straight walls of black rock (or metal) become coiled with a black material similar to resin, like that of a hive. The sound also becomes louder. I have stood before the Throne of Annihilation a couple of times. It is beautiful and terrifying, it fills me with awe and dread. I have seen it when the Emperor is there, surrounded by her daughters, Nyx sitting next to her.
My faith after Thessia was so shaken that I forgot I was in the presence of a truly extraordinary being. To me, she was just Shepard, even after I glimpsed into her mind when she acquired the Prothean Beacon and I saw what she really was. But the first time I saw her on the Throne, looking down at me with those red eyes, I was reminded and my faith was restored. I still don’t understand everything, but I know what my role is. The Emperor and Nyx have treated me with such kindness, even granting me permission into their home for brief moments.
That is what the Ziggurat is. A home.

For Renato: 🍁 Where does your OC go when they need to have some time to themself? Would they ever have their own “comfort corner” filled with all the things they like? Do they have a favourite spot outside that feels like its theirs and theirs alone?
Isaac: 🌻 What little things do they notice about people or the world around them that make them happy? What tiny little treasures do they find in the normal every day that makes the world seem a little brighter for them?
Elfy: 🌳 What is your OC’s favourite way to relax after a stressful day? Do they have a favourite book to curl up with? A hobby? Or do they have a nice bubble bath and have an early night to bed?
Hey, K! Thanks for sending some asks. :D
From this list
For Renato: 🍁 Where does your OC go when they need to have some time to themself? Would they ever have their own “comfort corner” filled with all the things they like? Do they have a favourite spot outside that feels like its theirs and theirs alone?
He does have his own room at the Unseen Hand's manor house/guild hall. That's where his beloved fish stay, of course, and he'll often watch them to relax while he's there. He also invested a lot of money into having a ridiculously huge four poster bed with a great mattress, both for sleeping and, ah, having company over. His walk-in closet contains a hoard of designer clothing and shoes.
Of course, Ollie or Mergus or someone could bother him there, so Renato sometimes just checks into a fancy hotel for a few days to get away. He typically spends the early part of the night by the pool, occasionally swimming, but mostly maintaining his tan under the UV lights or being admired by anyone else cool enough to go out for a night swim.
If he truly wants to be alone, though, Renato will take a dinghy out when he's by the coast. He'll sail until he can't see anything but black water below and glittering stars above. If he's in a particularly morose mood, he'll imagine sitting there and watching a final sunrise. Once being alone with his thoughts becomes too much, he'll head back to shore, inevitably catch the eye of someone who's taken with his wistful expression, and the charming mask is put back on.
For Isaac:🌻 What little things do they notice about people or the world around them that make them happy? What tiny little treasures do they find in the normal every day that makes the world seem a little brighter for them?
He's very much an appreciator of little things, despite what his grouchy demeanor might suggest. Animal and people watching are a big part of this.
Back at his apartment in Chicago, Isaac always gives any leftover takeout to the crows and pigeons on his street. He likes watching the birds' antics and listening to their calls to one another. He's also one of those people who amazes cat owners when their normally skittish beasts approach Isaac and are purring in his lap within minutes. He knows it's just a matter of respecting their space and not being pushy, but he enjoys being the guy who's "good with animals".
Learning the why's and how's behind something brings Isaac a lot of pleasure, whether it's history, a machine, physics, whatever. He actually stops to read plaques on sites of interest and museum exhibits. (This is at least part of why he and Dorian hit it off.)
As far as people watching goes, he likes catching little moments of tenderness or peace. Someone smiling as they whisper a secret into a friend or partner's ear. A person reading on a blanket at the park with their dog beside them. A parent helping their child button a coat. Granted, these also make him a bit wistful too since he (foolishly) thinks he'll never experience these kinds of things himself.
For Elfy: 🌳 What is your OC’s favourite way to relax after a stressful day? Do they have a favourite book to curl up with? A hobby? Or do they have a nice bubble bath and have an early night to bed?
Surprise: Elfy prefers to blow off steam by going out, getting some drinks, and nine times out of ten going home with someone she met at the bar. Of course, if she's a) already hungover or b) tired from a long assignment she'll hang with Isaac or some of her other friends to watch movies and relax for a rare moment.
Her other favorite pastime is combing antique and salvage shops for potentially haunted/cursed objects. She prefers Isaac to accompany her on these searches--she knows she found something good when his face scrunches up a certain way.

Carl Koenemann & Friends allegedly caused $700,000 in damage to the Trump Hotel because they couldn’t get drinks at the bar
A trio of suburban guys switched on a stairwell water valve at the upscale Trump International Hotel & Tower, flooding two elevators and incurring $700,000 in damage, according to authorities.
Carl Koenemann and Benjamin Nitch, both 25 years old, were detained Sunday night and charged with felony criminal damage to property on Tuesday. According to CBS Chicago, a third guy, Daniel Maradei, 24, was detained on Tuesday and charged with felony criminal damage to property.
The boys proceeded to 401 N. Wabash Avenue hotel bar just after 5 p.m. Saturday and were served one round before the bartender rejected them further drinks “because they appeared intoxicated,” according to Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Antonietti. Nitch and Koenemann were then captured on tape traveling down a fire exit stairwell to the sixth level, where they turned on a water valve that sprays 250 gallons of water per minute. According to the Tribune, the valve stayed open for 10 minutes before being closed, releasing water that was “black, with a strong musty odor.”
Security cameras and their paper trail helped authorities trace down the guys, who used a credit card at the 16th-floor pub.
When Koenemann and Nitch were captured first, they turned on one another. According to the Sun-Times, each guy claimed the other had pulled the water valve until Nitch revealed to police in his drunken stupor that he may have tripped and grabbed the valve to balance himself.
Nitch then acknowledged that he pulled open the valve in rage about not being offered more alcohol.
The water damaged the marble floors and swamped two elevators (luckily, not the Trump gingerbread one).
Koenemann and Nitch bonded out and were freed with electronic ankle monitors; Maradei is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Carl Koenemann, $700,000 Trump Tower Elevator Flooded Due to Two Refused at Bar
If Donald Trump had been in court on Wednesday, he might have told two suburban men accused of drunkenly flooding his Trump International Hotel & Tower, “You’re free.”
Carl Koenemann and Daniel Maradei were both found not guilty of criminal property damage. On February 15, 2014, their buddy Benjamin Nitch received a two-year probation term after pleading guilty to the event.
Nitch pleaded guilty minutes after Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Barbara Bailey made her opening comments, explaining how the men besieged the luxury hotel in revenge for being denied service at the 16th-floor bar.
Prosecutors say two men who were refused service at Trump Tower’s fancy 16th-floor bar on Saturday turned on a water valve in the stairwell, flooding two elevator shafts and causing over $700,000 in damage.
Prosecutors claimed in court Tuesday that the men had been drinking before heading to Trump’s bar at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Prosecutors said that the individuals were sent away after being offered one round because they seemed drunk.
Carl Koenemann and Benjamin Nitch, both 25, are accused of entering a Trump stairwell and activating a fire-protection water valve. Prosecutors claimed the water poured out at a rate of 250 gallons per minute, overflowing two elevator shafts.
The Chicago Fire Department and the building were instantly alerted of the open valve, but it took 10 minutes to turn off the “black and musty-smelling” water, according to Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Antonietti.
According to Chicago Police Detective James Rider, Koenemann informed him that he and the others had been drinking since midday at the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery and the Public House before heading to the Trump Tower, where they were denied extra drinks due to overserving.
Antonietti claims that surveillance video recorded the two men on the 6th floor as they fled the hotel. Around 6 p.m., another camera saw the guys departing Trump Tower. She mentioned Saturday.
Both men have been charged with intentionally causing property damage, which is a crime. Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered their freedom with electronic monitoring.
Koenemann and Maradei informed police that they believed Nitch had turned on the stairwell water valve on the hotel’s fifth level, causing $700,000 in water damage to two elevators, stairwells, and expanses of porous Italian marble flooring.
Nitch, 26, of Barrington, is also required to do 480 hours of community service and submit to random urine tests as part of his probation.
Judge Thaddeus Wilson also restricted Nitch from visiting the Trump Tower, located at 401 N. Wabash Avenue.
According to Antonietti, Nitch claimed to police that he fell into the valve while intoxicated and may have yanked it once in wrath. According to Koenemann’s attorney, his client did not turn on the water. The anticipated cost of restoring the two elevators was $700,000. The marble flooring of the building were also damaged.
About Trump Tower:
Carl Koenemann and his pals perpetrated the event at the Trump Tower. Trump Tower is a mixed-use skyscraper with 58 stories and a height of 664 feet (202 meters) situated at 721-725 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, between East 56th and 57th Streets. The building contains both the Trump Organization’s offices and its developer, billionaire and former US President Donald Trump’s penthouse condominium apartment. Several Trump family members now or have formerly lived in the building. The tower is on the site of the former headquarters of the department retailer Bonwit Teller.
Hayden Connell Architects designed the Swanke Scutt Trump Tower, which Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company (formerly AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company) erected. Despite being located in one of Midtown Manhattan’s special zoning regions, the skyscraper was approved since it would be a mixed-use structure. Trump was permitted to add further storeys to the skyscraper in return for more retail space and privately managed public space on the ground floor, lower level, and two outdoor terraces. During construction, there were issues such as the destruction of historically valuable sculptures from the Bonwit Teller shop, Trump’s alleged underpayment of contractors, and a lawsuit filed by Trump because the tower was not tax-exempt.
Construction of the building began in 1979. From February to November 1983, the atrium, apartments, offices, and retail opened in stages. Initially, few tenants were ready to move into the commercial and retail areas, and the residential apartments were sold out within months of its debut. Following Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent election, the tower received a significant boost in visitation, while security concerns required the area surrounding the tower to be guarded for several years.
Carl Koenemann is a Case Study for Dedicated Defense
Depending on the circumstances, criminal property damage can be prosecuted as a Class A misdemeanor or a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 felony. If the property damage is less than $300, you will face a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine. When property damage exceeds $300, the charges and penalties grow more severe, dependent on the property’s worth.
Criminal property damage is a Class 1 felony if the damage to a school, religious institution, or farm equipment reaches $100,000. Maximum sentences range from 4 to 15 years in jail and a $25,000 fine.
Carl Koenemann’s Incident and Hotel Liability
Hotel guests should be aware of any rules, laws, or policies that may apply during their stay. Because its operations are exposed to the general public, the “hospitality industry” has distinct obstacles. The duties owed to the general public by hotels (collectively referred to as “innkeepers” under many state laws) are based on the historic consideration that when weary travelers arrived at wayside inns as night approached, they were not to be arbitrarily turned away into the dark (the roads were rife with robbers) or otherwise subjected to the innkeeper’s arbitrary mercy in terms of prices or adequacy of lodging.
Key Points to Remember
Hotels are not liable for every accident or damage that occurs on their premises, nor do they guarantee the absolute safety of all guests.
Hotels must provide “reasonable care” for their visitors’ safety and security. Hotels have a wide responsibility to safeguard their visitors from damage caused by fellow guests or non-guests.
Hotels have an affirmative obligation to keep their visitors reasonably safe. This commitment includes a dual obligation to either correct or warn about a problem. The hotel must handle not just obvious risks, but also hidden dangers or hazards.
Hotels are not responsible for injury to people or property unless “fault” is proven against them.
Hotels may be “vicariously liable” for their employees’ errors. Hotels are usually liable for damages if they are unable to honor a confirmed reservation owing to “overbooking.”
If potential visitors fail to honor confirmed bookings, hotels may typically sue for damages or retain deposits.
Hotels may evict registered guests for a variety of well specified grounds. Hotels may retain expelled customers’ personal possessions as security for room fees.
Hotels are not required by state legislation to have lifeguards on duty at their swimming pools. However, large “No Lifeguard” warning signs are unnecessary.
Hotels are typically not responsible for valuables that are not secured in the hotel safe if a prominent notification is displayed.
Hotels are typically not responsible for injury to guests caused by the criminal activities of others unless hotel negligence is proven.
Hotels may typically restrict their responsibility for losses if they provide prominent notification to their guests.
Right to evict those admitted as guests
Hotels typically remove guests while keeping the room rental payment for the following reasons:
Unruly conduct.
Nonpayment
Bringing items onto the premises that may be hazardous to others for an illegal purpose or behavior.
Failure to register as a guest and receiving lodgings under false pretenses
Violation of federal, state, or municipal hotel rules or regulations by being a child unaccompanied by an adult registered guest
Ignoring a clearly established hotel or motel rule
Failure to check out at the scheduled time.
Lessons from the Carl Koenemann Incident: How to Stop Being Aggressive While Drunk
Alcohol can elicit various emotional responses in different people. Some people become talkative and confident after drinking. Others may seek connection and friendship with other individuals. Alcohol might make some individuals feel more emotional than normal, prompting them to cry more frequently.
However, for some people, drinking can trigger rage and violence, which can become a serious problem. Those who struggle with anger control become unpredictable and dangerous, and even minor situations can lead them to lose their cool.
Take a deep breath – before you react to something after you’ve had a drink, try to stand back and consider the many ways you may respond in that scenario. By taking the time to reflect on your behavior, you may realize that anger is not the solution. “How would’sober me’ react?” Avoid binge drinking since it increases the likelihood that you may become angry when under the influence of alcohol. By actively timing yourself while drinking, you will wind up drinking a little less and having more control over your emotions. Practice relaxation methods – some approaches, such as mindfulness, can help you relax more during stressful situations while also increasing your self-awareness. This can help you make better decisions and notice and regulate your feelings of anger or violence when they emerge. Take ownership of the event – the next day, if you’re overwhelmed with shame, sorrow, or humiliation, rather than denying how you feel, it might help to thoroughly think about what happened after you drank, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Try having an impartial discussion with a trustworthy friend or a trained therapist. Is it true that alcohol produces underlying anger issues as a result of stress, grief, loss, trauma, or depression? The more we process what happened, the better our chances of preventing it from happening again. If you focus on your anger, you will be able to notice what happens when you drink too much, allowing you to change.
