hi ive been working on my gag calculator for unm
Tumblr media
there's a couple big things lots of people will care about, and then a couple big things only a few people, or maybe just me will care about.
the biggest thing the most people will care about is custom gags, i think this is the only gag calculator that allows for users to input a gag with a custom amount of damage, which i think is pretty cool!
ive also started using github actions to build releases rather than my own hardware (since my laptop running windows died and i currently cant otherwise make a windows executable lol) which also allows me to make executables for operating systems besides windows, and throw them in releases.
so i can now make macos executable releases! i cant actually test them myself because i don't have a mac, but in theory i think they should work! one fear is that pyinstaller's automatic codesigning is not good enough and it doesn't let you run the program without turning off security features, which wouldn't look good in the readme LOL
github actions also lets me automatically build and publish the python package versions as well, so those will now be cross platform and update beyond 4.2.0, which is nice. so sorry to the 3 people who use the python package it isn't up to date 😭
the python packages also let you run the command "tt-damage-calculator" in your terminal to open the calculator now instead of "python -m tt_damage_calculator" which i think is pretty cool
ive also been playing with arch linux for the past week or so, and pushed a dev build of the calculator to the AUR, so maybe i'll start using that as another way to distribute the calculator besides pypi and the executables, just in case anyone uses arch.
the entire program was recently recoded into a more object oriented format over the past few months. this is like the fifth major rewrite ive done of the calculator, and hopefully the second to last. i kind of want to drop tk in favor of a nicer gui builder, like qt or something. but that's something for the future.
the latest dev version of the calculator with all this stuff is at https://github.com/Vhou-Atroph/TT-Damage-Calculator/releases/tag/V4.3.0_dev.4 if you like executables, https://github.com/Vhou-Atroph/TT-Damage-Calculator/actions/runs/9149820048 if you like wheels, and https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/tt-damage-calculator if you're an arch user. it has stuff for unm, so it's not really usable on the live server, but it still has some cool features i'm proud of and wanted to talk about lol

I can't resist throwing in this link though. You want a fairly simple way to download stuff off YouTube, and a number of other places? This'll do it. It'll also run batch jobs, and strip the audio if you're mostly interested in saving that part.
It looks like the Windows and Mac installers should handle all the extensions it needs for you. I haven't tried it out on either of those platforms, though.

My friend, how do you do? I was not sure if you had already received this but its better to be safe than sorry.
I am afraid I will be talking for a while, might melt your brain in the process.
Solve these puzzles and you shall know who I am.
Listen to me carefully. And remember these two things
Some of the questions hold the answers in them
Some questions are more literal than you think, follow the words exactly as they say
For this is the first step. Two keys you must find to understand the next step.
I have two words
They are from the same family
They share the last name with a triangle
They speak in another language
But they do not speak the same language
This is the first word
This word is good friends with a salad
Yet it was assassinated
You have to jump the number of times it was stabbed
The next is a word is what describes a classical hero
Handsome and strong, both together are the word
Make sure you speak the language of love to tell exactly him that
And make sure to remove the first word of this line while you tell him
What word do you tell him?
Have you gotten it? Have you gotten the answer? Well then this will be easier then. To get past the door you must insert the keys in proper order. And I suggest you use this door to get to the right answer: https://cryptii.com/

At the end of the last post, I caught a Nincada but it had a burn, so I was thinking "oh, I'll just head to the next town and heal up before I search for a pokemon in Route 31" except...there's no avoiding the grass before the town!
So I ended up running into...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...ugh...
Listen, Wynaut/Wobbuffet are a PITA to fight because of their gimmicky nature, but that doesn't make them good for a Nuzlocke team. The only damaging moves they can learn in this gen are Counter and Mirror Coat, which only work by 1) guessing the move category correctly, and 2) getting hit. They don't even learn any HMs, so they don't even have any utility outside of battling.
Basically what I'm saying is this is the first pokemon to get boxed once I get a 7th battle buddy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But for now, we have Asparagus on the team... ugh...
Anyway, shall we head over to the Ruins of Alph?
Tumblr media
I think we shall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
......THAT'S TOO MANY THINGS.
*cough* anyway, let's see what's gone and replaced Unown, shall we?
Tumblr media
Oh hell yes!! Water/Ground is possibly the most boss combo because a) immunity to Electric, and b) BEEFY AF. The only thing you have to watch out for is Grass, but that's a fairly easy one to predict (by which I mean, it's mostly just Grass and Bug types that use Grass moves).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome to the team, Forks! That Sticky Hold may come in handy, seeing how many times I've seen YTers screwed by Knockoff and the like :P
I've been trying to record my screen while playing so I don't have to try to remember to screenshot everything I want to record as it happens, but my Mac's native screen recorder slows the emulator down to the point of rendering the turbo button useless, and while QuickTime's screen recorder works a little better at first, after a few minutes, it does the same thing. But it's only with the DS emulator, I think - QT's screen recording worked just fine recording about 50 minutes of Pokemon Ruby on the GBA emulator. The only other downside is that cropping the screenshots I take is a bit of a pain... But w/e, I guess.

Had some old MIDI files from our circa-2000 iMac. For ease of use, I’d “converted” them to QuickTime movies. So naturally, they wouldn’t play today, and QT Pro doesn’t work. Shout out to Infinite Mac where I was able to load Mac OS 8.6 and convert the files back to standard MIDI.

Getting Started with Desktop Application Development
Tumblr media
While web and mobile apps dominate today’s tech scene, desktop applications are still essential in many industries — from productivity tools and games to system utilities and business software. This guide introduces the fundamentals of desktop application development and how to get started building your own apps.
What is a Desktop Application?
A desktop application is a software program that runs natively on an operating system like Windows, macOS, or Linux. Unlike web apps, desktop applications don’t rely on a browser and can offer greater access to system resources and offline functionality.
Why Build Desktop Apps?
Offline Capability: Desktop apps don’t need internet access to run.
Performance: Can take full advantage of system hardware.
Access to System Resources: File systems, printers, OS-level APIs.
Platform-Specific Design: Customize the experience for each OS.
Popular Frameworks for Desktop App Development
Electron (JavaScript): Build cross-platform desktop apps using web technologies.
JavaFX (Java): A robust framework for Java-based desktop apps.
Qt (C++ or Python via PyQt): A powerful cross-platform toolkit.
WPF (C#): For building Windows desktop apps using .NET.
Tkinter (Python): Simple GUI apps for learning and prototyping.
Example: Basic GUI with Python and Tkinter
import tkinter as tk def greet(): label.config(text="Hello, " + entry.get() + "!") app = tk.Tk() app.title("Simple App") entry = tk.Entry(app) entry.pack() button = tk.Button(app, text="Greet", command=greet) button.pack() label = tk.Label(app) label.pack() app.mainloop()
Example: Electron App (JavaScript/HTML/CSS)
// main.js const { app, BrowserWindow } = require('electron'); function createWindow() { const win = new BrowserWindow({ width: 800, height: 600 }); win.loadFile('index.html'); } app.whenReady().then(createWindow);
Best Practices for Desktop App Development
Keep the UI clean and responsive.
Ensure cross-platform compatibility (if targeting multiple OS).
Handle file I/O and system access carefully.
Use version control (e.g., Git) to manage development.
Test on real devices and environments.
Distribution Options
Windows: MSI/EXE installers, Microsoft Store.
macOS: DMG packages, Mac App Store (requires notarization).
Linux: DEB/RPM packages, Snap, Flatpak.
Cross-platform: Tools like Electron-builder or PyInstaller.
Conclusion
Desktop application development is a rewarding path that allows for rich, powerful software experiences. With frameworks like Electron, WPF, or Qt, you can create sleek and functional desktop apps suited to various platforms and needs. Start small, experiment with different tools, and bring your software ideas to life!

Day 30: Low-FODMAP Shepherd's Pie
Tumblr media
I've been on a run of casseroles, so I figured I'd continue the trend by attempting to make a low-FODMAP version of the beloved Midwestern standby, Tater Tot Hotdish. The first real obstacle is that the tradition gravy/binder in the dish is a can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup, and just about all the ingredients in that are forbidden. I just went with a basic sauce made out of broth, milk, and some Parmesan for creaminess, which was good.
But it turned out I was unable to source any tater tots that were low-FODMAP -- onions, donchaknow -- even though the Fig app claims they exist. I assume they're regional brands not carried at the local SuperOne. I ended up using hash browns which I thought had a similar vibe. The finished product ended up tasting and looking more like a shepherd's pie than tater tot hotdish, and a lot, so I just went with it. To the recipe:
Low-FODMAP Shepherd's Pie
1 1/2 lbs green beans, trimmed and cut into 1/2 inch lengths
1 c diced carrots
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 tbsp fresh thyme, minced
3 tbsp brown rice flour
1 c water mixed with 1 tbsp beef-style Better Than Bullion
2/3 c lactose-free whole milk
1 c shredded Parmesan
8 oz can of water chestnuts, cut into matchsticks
3-4 c frozen hash browns
shredded mozzarella, optional
oil, salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 450F and position a rack in the upper middle of the oven. Steam green beans until bright green and this side of done.
Meanwhile, in a Dutch oven or a high-walled skillet, cook the carrots in a little oil over medium heat until beginning to soften, about 5 minutes. Crumble in the ground beef, thyme, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp pepper and cook until well browned and most of the liquid is evaporated.
Mix in the rice flour, and then pour in broth and milk, scraping up any brown bits. Cook until the sauce has thickened, about 5 minutes. Off heat, mix in the Parmesan, then the water chestnuts and green beans. Pour into a 2 qt baking dish.
Cover with a layer of hash browns, and sprinkle with mozzarella, if using. Bake until bubbling and browned on the top, about 30 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes.

Like most hotdishes, the ingredients list was largely dictated by what I had to use up in the fridge or pantry. I had a couple sad carrots, but I would have used more if I had them. The water chestnuts were in the pantry, and I thought they'd add an interesting crunch, which they did. The kids liked it, and one declared it better than the mac & cheese, that honestly isn't saying much.
I went with Better Than Bullion because most commercially made broths have a bunch of stuff on the no list, like celery or onions, and this seemed like the lowest-FODMAP of the available options. I suppose you could make your own broth, but, brother, I have a full time job, and I ain't doing that. Repeat after me: it's a low-FODMAP diet, not a no-FODMAP diet.
So. This ended up working out in a way I did not expect, but I'm glad it worked out.
Disclaimer: I am no dietician. I'm doing my best to minimize FODMAPs in my diet, but it's possible for me to be misinformed or mistaken about various ingredients.

My friend, how do you do?

I agree and it's something that's been bothering me, especially when stuff like teams will harass you into installing the electron app instead of running it in a browser tab.
But I don't agree with the point about it not working without an internet access. Of course discord and teams don't work. But they could have been built in C++/Qt or .NET and it wouldn't change a thing. I've also used vscode offline and apart from the extension store, everything worked. I haven't used Spotify in a long time but I think it worked and let me play my local files.
Because these apps are just slightly better than a single-tab browser. They contain all the code they need to work, just not the online data. The companies have a financial incentive to do so, too. The less data they have to send you every time you use the app, and the less computing they have to do, the cheaper it gets. Not that they only sending useful data either, they still want their sweet, sweet telemetry.
I think if it as more of a laziness issue (corporate for saving money). They could do the work of packaging and testing real software for windows and mac (and linux too if they feel like it)(they don't), or they make it once and let chromium do the cross-platform part, and blame everyone who doesn't have last-gen hardware if it's slow.
ever wonder why spotify/discord/teams desktop apps kind of suck?
i don't do a lot of long form posts but. I realized that so many people aren't aware that a lot of the enshittification of using computers in the past decade or so has a lot to do with embedded webapps becoming so frequently used instead of creating native programs. and boy do i have some thoughts about this.
for those who are not blessed/cursed with computers knowledge Basically most (graphical) programs used to be native programs (ever since we started widely using a graphical interface instead of just a text-based terminal). these are apps that feel like when you open up the settings on your computer, and one of the factors that make windows and mac programs look different (bc they use a different design language!) this was the standard for a long long time - your emails were served to you in a special email application like thunderbird or outlook, your documents were processed in something like microsoft word (again. On your own computer!). same goes for calendars, calculators, spreadsheets, and a whole bunch more - crucially, your computer didn't depend on the internet to do basic things, but being connected to the web was very much an appreciated luxury!
that leads us to the eventual rise of webapps that we are all so painfully familiar with today - gmail dot com/outlook, google docs, google/microsoft calendar, and so on. as html/css/js technology grew beyond just displaying text images and such, it became clear that it could be a lot more convenient to just run programs on some server somewhere, and serve the front end on a web interface for anyone to use. this is really very convenient!!!! it Also means a huge concentration of power (notice how suddenly google is one company providing you the SERVICE) - you're renting instead of owning. which means google is your landlord - the services you use every day are first and foremost means of hitting the year over year profit quota. its a pretty sweet deal to have a free email account in exchange for ads! email accounts used to be paid (simply because the provider had to store your emails somewhere. which takes up storage space which is physical hard drives), but now the standard as of hotmail/yahoo/gmail is to just provide a free service and shove ads in as much as you need to.
webapps can do a lot of things, but they didn't immediately replace software like skype or code editors or music players - software that requires more heavy system interaction or snappy audio/visual responses. in 2013, the electron framework came out - a way of packaging up a bundle of html/css/js into a neat little crossplatform application that could be downloaded and run like any other native application. there were significant upsides to this - web developers could suddenly use their webapp skills to build desktop applications that ran on any computer as long as it could support chrome*! the first applications to be built on electron were the late code editor atom (rest in peace), but soon a whole lot of companies took note! some notable contemporary applications that use electron, or a similar webapp-embedded-in-a-little-chrome as a base are:
microsoft teams
notion
vscode
discord
spotify
anyone! who has paid even a little bit of attention to their computer - especially when using older/budget computers - know just how much having chrome open can slow down your computer (firefox as well to a lesser extent. because its just built better <3)
whenever you have one of these programs open on your computer, it's running in a one-tab chrome browser. there is a whole extra chrome open just to run your discord. if you have discord, spotify, and notion open all at once, along with chrome itself, that's four chromes. needless to say, this uses a LOT of resources to deliver applications that are often much less polished and less integrated with the rest of the operating system. it also means that if you have no internet connection, sometimes the apps straight up do not work, since much of them rely heavily on being connected to their servers, where the heavy lifting is done.
taking this idea to the very furthest is the concept of chromebooks - dinky little laptops that were created to only run a web browser and webapps - simply a vessel to access the google dot com mothership. they have gotten better at running offline android/linux applications, but often the $200 chromebooks that are bought in bulk have almost no processing power of their own - why would you even need it? you have everything you could possibly need in the warm embrace of google!
all in all the average person in the modern age, using computers in the mainstream way, owns very little of their means of computing.
i started this post as a rant about the electron/webapp framework because i think that it sucks and it displaces proper programs. and now ive swiveled into getting pissed off at software services which is in honestly the core issue. and i think things can be better!!!!!!!!!!! but to think about better computing culture one has to imagine living outside of capitalism.
i'm not the one to try to explain permacomputing specifically because there's already wonderful literature ^ but if anything here interested you, read this!!!!!!!!!! there is a beautiful world where computers live for decades and do less but do it well. and you just own it. come frolic with me Okay ? :]
*when i say chrome i technically mean chromium. but functionally it's same thing
