Now 10 weeks out from the double-episode series premiere of CBS‘ NCIS: Origins, TVLine has an exclusive first look at two key characters — “probie” Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Special Agent Mike Franks — in the NCIS prequel spinoff.

Though longtime NCIS fans may fancy themselves well-versed on Jethro’s younger days (which have been glimpsed in a half dozen or so flashback episodes over the past 21 years), “They don’t know as much as they think they do,” posits David J. North, who serves as co-showrunner on Origins with Gina Lucita Monreal. “Seeing Gibbs arrive at NIS on Day 1, and seeing how Gibbs became Gibbs…? You will realize there’s so much to explore.”

For example, “We’ve not seen that dynamic between ‘probie’ Gibbs and Mike Franks,” played on the original NCIS by franchise front man Mark Harmon and guest star Muse Watson, Monreal notes. Coming to NIS “so fresh out of the Marines, it gives Gibbs a different kind of shading than we’ve seen before as a character.”

Adds North, “The way he looks at Franks, you can see that bit of awe in his eyes.”

NCIS: Origins’ series regular cast also includes Mariel Molino (Promised Land) as Special Agent Lala Dominguez, a former Marine with a dark sense of humor (and whose dynamic with Gibbs is “filled with sparks”); Diany Rodriguez (The Blacklist) as Special Agent Vera Strickland, “a no-nonsense, sharp-witted Brooklynite who’s tough as nails” (a character originated by Nip/Tuck‘s Roma Maffia in the Season 11 NCIS episode “Under the Radar”); Tyla Abercrumbie (The Chi) as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Hayes, a “mama bear” who has wryly dubbed herself “HSIC” — Head Secretary in Charge; and Caleb Martin Foote (Made for Love) as Special Agent Benjamin “Randy” Randolf, the agency’s all-too-lovable “golden boy” tasked with showing Gibbs the ropes.

NCIS vet Mark Harmon, who starred on the mothership as Gibbs through early Season 19, will not appear in the series, but he will be heard as its narrator as well as serve as an executive producer. Sean Harmon, who played Young Gibbs in the aforementioned NCIS flashbacks and came up with the idea for the prequel series, will also serve as an EP.

Hiker notifies BLM of prehistoric archaeological discovery

While hiking on the Arizona Strip in January of 2018, Colorado resident Randy Langstraat discovered a prehistoric artifact in a popular recreation area. Concerned that the small, intact pot was within casual view in a frequently visited area, Langstraat carefully concealed the pot in place and contacted BLM Arizona Strip archaeologist Sarah Page. Langstraat provided Page with a detailed description of the location of the pot.

In February, Page, along with another BLM Arizona Strip archaeologist and law enforcement officers, visited the reported site. The group was delighted to find the pot had not been disturbed and was in near-perfect condition. 

After locating the intact pot, Page began a full documentation process of the site and, along with another agency archaeologist, conducted an intensive archaeological survey to determine if additional artifacts were present. No other artifacts were present and the archaeologists believe the pot was left in the location by the pot’s creator with the intent to collect it later. However, the person never recovered it. A detailed analysis was conducted by archaeologist David Van Alfen who determined the pot to be North Creek Corrugated, which dates to the Late Pueblo II period (AD 1050-1250) of the Virgin Branch of the Ancestral Puebloan culture. The effigy handle appears to be that of an animal, possibly a deer or bighorn sheep. However, the ears or horns have been broken off making it difficult to determine precisely. 

Precious resources like the prehistoric North Creek Corrugated pot aid scientists in their study of earlier occupants. In addition, losses of these resources deny present and future generations the ability to enjoy the privilege of learning from and observing the site in its original state. BLM Arizona manages some of the most significant and best-preserved prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in the American Southwest that are important to our understanding of both recorded history and prehistory. 

On the Arizona Strip, the human stories etched on the landscapes are diverse and include everything from Little Black Mountain and Nampaweap Petroglyphs, to historic sites such as the Mt. Trumbull Schoolhouse, Grand Gulch Mine and Dominguez-Escalante Trail. More than 750,000 acres of Arizona public lands have been inventoried for cultural resources and nearly 11,000 sites recorded. 

BLM law enforcement rangers, special agents and archeologists work closely together to monitor and protect more than 150,000 prehistoric and historic sites on public lands across the country. These resources represent a priceless heritage in need of preservation for the enjoyment of present and future generations. In 1976, through the enactment of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, Congress recognized the need for BLM law enforcement officers to provide for public safety and to help protect the nation's public land resources. The BLM's law enforcement program is responsible for protecting resources across the nation's 245 million acres of BLM-managed public land, which it does in partnership with state and local law enforcement agencies. 

“While the BLM is tasked to protect these resources,” said Page, “we need everyone’s help to do so.  Langstraat did the right thing by reporting the discovery of the pot to the BLM and by leaving it in place. Just like Langstraat, everyone can help to protect our nation’s fascinating past. We hope that others will follow his example and respect our past.”

Gibbs’ Rule #8: Never take anything for granted. That one hit us hard when Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), the sometimes grumpy but always gutsy special agent in charge of NCIS, unexpectedly retired to go fishing in Alaska in 2021. We’ll get another chance to appreciate the “grab your gear” guy in NCIS: Origins, a 1991-set prequel in which the young Gibbs (Austin Stowell) starts work at what was then known as NIS at the Camp Pendleton office in California. The icing? Harmon returns to narrate.

“Mark Harmon has done a job that actors dream to do. He’s captured the world and so that is just slightly daunting,” says Stowell who watched numerous episodes to prepare. “But getting to know Mark has really been paramount to me stepping into these shoes and trying to fill them.”

Harmon’s key words of advice to Stowell were “trust yourself.” Harmon also acknowledges the challenge for an actor to play an existing character, saying, “This is a little different because some things are already in place and an audience knows where this leads years ahead.”

The idea for the series came from Harmon’s son Sean, who’d played the younger Gibbs in NCIS flashbacks.  “I believe that very few people are actually ‘born leaders’ and are instead forged into them, and Gibbs is no exception,” says Sean Harmon. “Digging into the backstory of ‘the boss’ seemed like a good opportunity to find out why Gibbs turned out the way he did and who was around to influence him on that journey.”

Mark Harmon suggested the best people to create the series would be longtime NCIS writers David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal who executive produce and are co-showrunners. They asked the senior Harmon to narrate.

The two-hour premiere introduces a Gibbs fresh back from Desert Storm, grieving the loss of his wife and daughter and trying to get his bearings with a new team. One of them is a younger version of a face familiar to NCIS fans, Gibbs’ confidante, Special Agent Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid, Six, in a role originated by Muse Watson as the older Franks).

“Franks is the one who brings Gibbs into NIS. It was an opportunity to perhaps save a lost soul,” says Schmid who emailed and spoke with Watson as part of his preparation. “Taking on a character played by such a wonderful actor is a bit of a challenge. You have to play by a certain set of rules. The mustache is a trademark of Muse’s. I wear dark brown contacts every day at work. I took on a dialect coach, so Kyle Schmid now sounds like Mike Franks all the time.”

The rest are new characters including Special Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez (Mariel Molino).

“I’m interpreting someone who’s a former Marine, now a female agent at NIS and I’m excited to jump into that, especially in the Nineties, which is such an incredible era,” says Molino. “I love that there are no [cell] phones, no internet, no social media. Everything we portray is direct contact.”

So will any romance develop between her and Gibbs? “I’m trying to prove myself. It’s not a romantic vibe,” Stowell says. “They are kindred spirits, both bullheaded, stubborn and smart. They say opposites attract. So, what happens when people are the same?”

Gibbs’ first friend on the force is someone who’s not much like him at all: Special Agent Bernard “Randy” Randolf (Caleb Foote). “Gibbs is a bit of a lone wolf. Randy’s a bit of an extrovert. In this naval investigative setting, there’s hundreds of people, half of them in camouflage because it takes place on Camp Pendleton, and Gibbs is a deer in the headlights.  Randy sees that and immediately goes out of his way to make this person feel welcome. We create a friendship pretty quickly,” Foote says. “It’s cool to create a character that helps Leroy Jethro Gibbs to become the great detective that he is.”

Not in the field but equally important in solving cases are the assistant medical examiner Dr. Lenora Friedman (Lori Petty, Orange is the New Black), and the head of the NIS forensics lab, Woodrow “Woody” Browne (Bobby Moynihan, Saturday Night Live).

“I’m the goofy scientist who figures out weird stuff. It’s like working with the Muppets, you immediately realize you are not the important part. You’re just there to make the Muppets look awesome,” says Moynihan, of supporting the NIS team. “I’m splicing a lot of videotape. I have a hundred million [paper] files. I don’t have a laptop. They show the old tech.”

The first case will focus on a series of interconnected murders “that bounce off of our characters in a really emotional way,” North says. Adds Monreal, “Gibbs is thrown into this job and he’s in over his head, but in a way, this case is tailor-made for him, so he has an opportunity to shine.”

We’ll see a lot more emotion from the younger Gibbs than we’re used to as longtime NCIS fans. “The Gibbs that Gina and I wrote for so many years had learned to push it all that emotion down. This Gibbs hasn’t learned that yet,” says North.
