15+ Front-end Development Conferences to Attend in 2017

The conference season is just around the corner, so let us present you with a guide to 2017’s front-end development conference landscape. This doesn’t intend to be a comperensive guide though, especially since there are still a bunch of conferences where organizers haven’t yet confirmed the location and/or date, and there are also many remarkable conferences on other languages than English.

Note that many of these conferences have scholarships that may allow you to attend for a reduced price or even free, and you can still apply as a speaker for the ones that take place later in the year. And why to go? New knowledge, new connections, new places to see, and if you are lucky a wider world view, too.

1. Jazzcon.Tech, Connect.Tech

Jazzcon.Tech covers all topics a front-end developer may want to know about. Beyond the HTML-CSS-JavaScript trio, you can find many interesting sessions and workshops (Angular, React, Redux, Progressive Web Apps, data visualization, etc.) on four concurrent tracks.

Connect.Tech is its sister conference taken place in the second part of the year, dedicated to JavaScript, web- and mobile-related technologies. And… if you buy a ticket for Jazzcon.Tech, you can attend Connect.Tech for completely free.

2. Render

The single-track, two-day long Render conference is the successor to jQuery UK, and now it covers a much wider spectrum than jQuery. The most well-known speakers are probably Jeremy Keith and Rachel Andrew, but their whole line of speakers is impressive. Apart from the talks, you can also take part in one of the three workshops (web performance, web components & JS graphics).

3. An Event Apart

An Event Apart is a series of conferences that takes place in different cities in the United States over the course of each year. It’s organized by the guys behind “A List Apart” web design & development magazine. An Event Apart is one of the most prestigious conferences in the industry, always with a strong line of speakers and cutting edge talks.

4. SmashingConf

SmashingConf is organized by the reputable Smashing Magazine, and it’s probably one of the best places to get updated on the latest news of front-end techniques, user experience strategies, and web development practices. SmashingConf has two locations confirmed so far for this year but there’s usually another one in the autumn in Europe, too.

5. NG-CONF

If you want to take your knowledge on Angular development to the next level it can be a good idea to give a shot to NG-Conf that labels itself “the world’s original Angular conference”.

And if you want to combine work with vacation, the same guys present Angular developers with NG-Cruise which involves a cruise trip from Miami to the Bahamas while attending Angular talks, and participating in related workshops and panels.

6. FEDC – Front-End Design Conference

Although not all speakers and sessions have been yet confirmed, the Front-End Design conference in Florida is a promising event. The conference exists since 2009, and on their About page you can get a closer view on talks of past years.

7. Generate

Generate is organized by the publisher of Creative Bloq, and it takes place at three different locations this year. The tracks cover trending topics such as front-end tooling, information architecture design, responsive web design, adaptive interfaces, web standards, and many others.

8. Respond

Respond is Australia’s responsive web design conference organized side by side with two other web-related conferences, Code covering front-end engineering, and Direction covering experience and interaction design. Respond presents a bunch of interesting topics. It’s recommended to the whole front-end team from product managers to developers.

9. CSSConf EU, JSConf EU

CSSConf EU and JSConf EU both take place in Berlin, Germany on the same weekend (Fri-Sun), so you can easily attend both if you want to get updated on the latest developments of CSS and JavaScript as well. You can follow the latest announcements of speakers on the conference blog.

10. DEVit, Frontend United

The DEVit and Frontend United conferences are both held in Greece, with only one week apart. Although they’re not organized by the same people, you can easily attend both with only one trip.

DEVit doesn’t only have front-end sessions, but it also covers backend, DevOps and mobile development. Concerning Frontend United, there’s still not too much information, but the list of already confirmed speakers speaks for itself.

11. Front-Trends

Front-Trends is a single-track, annual conference in Warsaw, existing since 2010. The talks are recommended for professionals with intermediate to advanced knowledge in front-end development. On the home page of the conference you can check out previous years’ sessions.

12. O’Reilly Fluent

Fluent is O’Reilly‘s yearly web development conference with a wide spectrum of topics, such as web performance, web services, accessibility, front-end frameworks, cross-platform development, and a bunch of others.

Before the conference, O’Reilly also offers two-day long web development courses where you can get an in-depth training in critical topics, such as progressive web apps, offline apps, microservices, and others.

13. Frontend Conference Zurich

The Frontend Conference Zurich has two tracks with more than 20 presentations, and covers the intersection of design & technology. Speakers are to be presented the latest advancements of web, HCI, and UX design and web technologies.

14. dotConferences

dotConferences is a series of high-quality developer events held every year in Paris, France. dotCSS and dotJS are just two from the series that contains five other conferences as well, i.e. dotSwift, dotSecurity, dotScale, dotAI, and dotGo.

dotCSS and dotJS are held on two consecutive days, and you can buy a combo ticket for the two. The tickets come at a friendly price, so these conferences can be a great choice for first-goers who want to set foot in the conference realm.
