The anti seasick ship SS Bessemer Saloon Steamship

The SS Bessemer Saloon Steamship- SS Bessemer for short - was an experimental Victorian passenger side wheel steamer designed to counteract seasickness and operated between Dover and Calais. Her inventor was Sir Henry Bessemer.

In 1868, Bessemer, who suffered from severe seasickness, developed the idea of a ship whose passenger cabin - the saloon - was to be suspended on a gimbal and mechanically held horizontally, thus levelling out the swell and sparing the occupants from the ship's movements. Sounded too good to be true, but more on that later. He patented this ingenious idea in December 1869 and after successful trials with a model in which the levelling was carried out by hydraulics controlled by a helmsman observing a spirit level, Bessemer founded a limited company, the Bessemer Saloon Steamboat Company Limited, which was to operate steamships between England and France. Capital of 250,000 pounds was used to finance the construction of a ship, the SS Bessemer, whose chief designer was the naval architect Edward James Reed.

And so she was built by Earle's Shipbuilding in Hull. She bore the shipyard number 197 and was launched on 24 September 1874. As already mentioned, she was a paddle steamer with four buckets (two buckets each on port and starboard, one forward and one aft). She had a length of 106.68 m (350 feet), a width on deck of 12.19 m (40 feet), an outside width over the bucket boxes of 19.81 m (65 feet), a draught of 2.26 m (7 feet 5 inches) and a gross register tonnage of 1974 tonnes. What also characterised her was that she was completely identical fore and aft, she had two bridges and two wheels, which simply made her faster and more manoeuvrable in both directions. Her maximum speed was about 17.4 knots.

The inner saloon was a room 70 feet long (21 metres) and 30 feet wide (9.1 metres), with a ceiling 6.1 metres above the floor, Moroccan-covered seats, partitions and spiral columns of carved oak and gilded panels with hand-painted murals. The press liked to call it the floating clubhouse. However, the swinging saloon was only intended for first class passengers. The second class, on the other hand, did not enjoy this and had to make do with cabins on the sides of the hull.

The disaster begins

On 21 October 1874, the Bessemer had her first misfortune. She had just arrived in Hull to be fitted out when she was driven ashore in a storm. She was refloated and found to be undamaged, which was not entirely true, as would later become apparent.

In March 1875, the ship sailed on a private trial voyage from Dover to Calais. During this voyage she is said to have steered well and even had a top speed of 18 knots. Her swinging saloon is also said to have worked excellently. However, things didn't go so smoothly because on arrival in Calais, a paddle wheel was damaged when she crashed into the pier because it didn't react to the rudder at slow speed.

The first and only public voyage took place on 8 May 1875, with the ship sailing with her revolving cabin locked (some observers suggested this was due to the ship's severe instability, but Bessemer attributed this to lack of time to repair the previous damage). The ship was operated by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. After two attempts to enter the harbour, it again crashed into the Calais pier, this time destroying part of it. Calais billed the company £2800 for the damage.

Due to the poor performance, investors lost confidence and the company was dissolved in 1876. On 29 December 1876, the Bessemer ran aground on Burcom Sand in the Humber upstream of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, after the removal of the swivelling saloon and other extensive alterations. She was refloated and taken to Hull. The Board of Trade's investigation into the grounding found that the captain was at fault. His certificate was suspended for three months.After removal, the designer Reed had the saloon cabin taken to his home, Hextable House, Swanley, where it was used as a billiard room. When the house was later converted into a women's college, Swanley Horticultural College, the saloon was used as a lecture theatre, but was destroyed by a direct hit when the college was bombed during the Second World War.

Dan: Has the immune system of a proverbial ox. Very rarely gets sick, and has a high tolerance to pain and discomfort. Living in London has exposed him to a whole range of germs, and he's developed a robust immunity to a lot. When he is unwell, he's not a difficult patient (and Hess is surprisingly good at looking after him). Lysander: Just... weirdly healthy. No one can quite work out why, but he doesn't tend to get sick too often. On the rare occasion he is unwell - immediate reversion to flopping dramatically in his bed, because he is dying. (He's not used to being ill and he doesn't like it, but it's also a shameless excuse to get people to dote on him.) Not too difficult to handle, as long as he's being gently fussed over, in which case he's thrilled. (This usually results in Aubrey moving into his rooms and working from next to Lysander's sick bed and absently petting him, and Retvja spending more time than usual bringing Lysander hot drinks, soups and sternly re-fluffing his pillows.)

Hess: His immune system is made of pretty strong stuff (he's the Antichrist and also a doctor). Doesn't get sick too often, but has been known pre-apocalypse to routinely catch the flu at least once a year (in spite of his annual flu jab). Is a surprisingly obedient patient, if a little irritating because he occasionally tries to correct Dan's care from a medical perspective.

Samiel and Jay: Pretty equal - they occasionally pick things up, but how they react to it is pretty different. Jay just wants to be left alone to quietly recuperate (which Samiel dislikes intensely, so it's difficult for him to just leave Jay alone), whereas Samiel would very much like some company, please and thank you. (He's not... difficult, per se, but equally he needs Jay to be there for him, especially when he's feeling particularly low.)

Aubrey: The literal worst. Terrible immune system, but more than that - a terrible patient. Refuses to take to his sick bed, because he 'can handle it' (he cannot handle it), and there's too much that needs doing. Disregards all medical advice and keeps working. Pushes himself too hard (one day I will write about his recovery on Hossith post-Lysander murder attempt), and often ends up becoming worse as a result. This is extremely stressful for Lysander, who veers between begging, pleading, bossing, threats towards medical professionals and outright 'picking Aubrey up and carrying him off' in order to get him to rest.

Introduction

Later, her mother and she left Germany for England to start a new life. However, at that time, England was not kind to Russian immigrants. It was there that Irina learned to build masks and switch between them quickly. She developed an ability to read situations and analyze human reactions—skills honed while running from bullies, but some would say they were passed down by her father and grandfathers, all men involved in the world of espionage. So it was no surprise that the same man who visited her mother when she was young continued to keep an eye on Irina—until she disappeared to America at the age of 16.

Foggy Jack (the urban legend)

So, to be sure, there is fog in London. But the notorious impenetrable "pea-souper" fog? That was, as Lane here says in Mad Men, a result of pollution. After the Great Smog of London in 1952, more regulation was put in place and the density of London fog is much lower these days (but London Fog is an American company so they would hardly know that.)

Unlike London, Wellington Wells didn't really hit its industrial era until after WWII. Obviously Haworth Labs is the primary source of pollution in the town (and the pea-souper fog just happens to be the same virulent green color as the sludge the labs dump into the river), but motilene production and failing related infrastructure also contributes greatly to the town's ambient toxicity.

And this toxicity is especially pronounced at night, possibly due to lower evening temperatures reacting with the presumable warmth of freshly dumped toxic sludge.

If we assume the labs have been operating in this way since Joy's introduction, then the fog situation has been around for at least ten years. And that means that the evening hours have been somewhat perilous for the average Wellie for the same amount of time.

We know that Jubilators were invented in 1962, two years prior to the events in the game, for the purpose of collecting corpses off the streets at night so that the Doctors would no longer have to do this manually. This tells us that people were dying in such volume that it was first necessary to assign this task to Doctors and then again to invent a device to relieve them of the responsibility.

It bears mention to that Doctors were also designed to utilize gas masks originally.

The intent behind this was probably to negate some of Sally's ability's against them (and just to invoke plague doctor vibes), but consider that Bobbies also wear gas masks at night as part of their uniform, to protect them from the fog.

I think then that the curfew was instituted not recently - as the constable's reminder about it in the Salamanca Bridge test would imply - but at the time that people began dying in alarming numbers due to toxic fog. It was a way to prevent further causalities and lower the Doctors' workload.

But one could not just say that there was poisonous toxic fog outside at night. Officially, they probably had a legitimate enough sounding reason, like that only Downers would be out at night doing suspicious shit like robbing your reserves. That would also explain why people invest in Downer Detectors in their own homes.

Foggy Jack as an urban legend might also have developed around this time as well, rather than in more recently memory.

Consider that the toxic fog kills by proximity. You're probably not really breathing well anywhere in Wellington Wells at any time, but you don't actually take damage unless you are in visually identifiable fog. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for Wellies who have fallen victim to fog poisoning to be found on the periphery of a patch of pea soup. It dovetails nicely with the idea of a fog-based boogieman whose gonna gitchu if you go out at night.

Wellies are also a very childlike people and they thrive on mutual regulation. Perpetuating the idea of a ghostly killer who's lurking outside waiting to pounce on anyone out at night is a good way to reinforce the curfew on each other while playing to their more juvenile fears. It's also just the sort of thing a parent would say, which many Wellies probably enjoy and find comforting in its way.

And so it would go until the present when, over the course of the past year, five women would be found hacked to pieces after venturing out after curfew. That they were found all sliced up is the difference. Normally, when "Foggy Jack" gets someone, they are left without a mark because they die of poisoning. Since these women were slashed up, it means they weren't killed by the fog, but by a murderer.

That the killer is using the Foggy Jack legend as a cover is quite cleaver clever though. By playing into the urban legend aspect, leaving his corpses near the fog as a calling card, the constabulary is necessarily discouraged from investigating publicly. Admitting that there's real a Foggy Jack now invites too many questions about how long Foggy Jack has been real. And even if they could answer that truthfully, it would also cause a panic, which is the exact opposite thing you want to do when your job is to preserve order.

But really, it's just as well. Even if there is a killer acting as Foggy Jack, who is he killing? What kind of person is out on the streets at night anyway? Downers, deviants, and ne'er-do-wells.

No big loss. It's ultimately more useful to the town's administration for Foggy Jack to keep his status as a myth if it keeps fine upstanding Wellies indoors at night.
