Trudy Ring at The Advocate:
The United Methodist Church stands to lose one-fifth of its U.S. congregations due to differences over LGBTQ+ issues and amid expectations that the church will become more supportive. The denomination currently considers “the practice of homosexuality” to be “incompatible with Christian teaching,” and its official policy does not allow out LGBTQ+ clergy or perform same-sex marriages. But many congregations are defying those policies, and pro-LGBTQ+ changes are likely to be proposed at next year’s general conference.
Such changes — approval of out clergy and same-sex marriages — have been proposed but rejected for years, but the denomination, considering some differences irreconcilable, put forth a plan a few years ago to allow congregations to leave. Since 2019, 6,182 U.S. congregations, largely conservative ones in the South and Midwest, have received approval to leave the United Methodist Church, the Associated Press reports. Most of the departures — 4,172 — have come this year. About 3,000 of the total are joining the Global Methodist Church, a new and conservative denomination, while some are joining other denominations or becoming independent, according to the AP.
Around 1/5ths of United Methodist Churches will be or have left the denomination over LGBTQ+ issues during these next few years, and a great majority of those churches will leave for the more conservative and homophobia-friendly Global Methodist Church, while a few will relocate to a different denomination, and a few will become independent of any denomination.

Greek Archaeologists Discover Mysterious 4,000-Year-Old Building on Hill Earmarked for New Airport
Archaeologists on the Greek island of Crete have uncovered a monumental ancient structure that threatens to halt progress on the construction of a new airport.
The structure belonged to the Minoan civilization and was mainly used between 2000 and 1700 B.C.E., around the same time that Crete’s monumental palaces at Knossos and Phaistos were built, per the Greek City Times.
But unlike these palaces and other feats of Minoan architecture, the purpose of the building remains unknown, and it’s now the subject of much archaeological attention and speculation.
The structure resembles “a huge car wheel from above,” writes Nicholas Paphitis for the Associated Press, with a diameter of 157 feet and a total area of 19,000 square feet.
According to a statement from the Greek Ministry of Culture, some of the structure’s features are comparable to Minoan tombs, including its circular arrangement of stone rings and its intricate layout. But a large quantity of ancient animal bones found nearby is complicating researchers’ understanding of the site.
“It may have been periodically used for possibly ritual ceremonies involving consumption of food, wine and perhaps offerings,” says the statement, per a translation by the AP.

While archaeologists further excavate and study the building, which sits on top of Papoura Hill, near the town of Kastelli, they must contend with the hilltop’s future function: a planned radar station for Crete’s new international airport.
Beginning in 2027, the airport will serve Heraklion, Crete’s capital and largest city, as well as a wealth of cultural and archaeological sites across the island.
Eighteen million passengers are projected to use the airport annually once construction is complete, the AP reports. Tourists want to visit Crete’s well-preserved historical sites, but they need convenient, modern infrastructure to take them there.
At times, rampant tourism threatens the integrity of ancient sites in Greece, prompting the government to take protective measures, like limiting the number of visitors to the Acropolis in Athens.

Per the statement, excavations in the area uncovered at least 35 other archaeological sites. As Greek authorities build Crete’s new airport and the network of roads needed to connect it with the rest of the island, they must continually strike a balance between innovation and maintaining cultural heritage.
In the statement, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni describes the structure as a unique find of great interest. She says the Greek government and airport officials will explore alternative locations for the radar station to ensure the preservation of this historically significant archaeological site.
“It’s possible to go ahead with the airport while granting the antiquities the protection they merit,” Mendoni adds, per the AP. Her comments offer hope that Crete’s past, present and future will once again be reconciled.
By Eli Wizevich.

Hi Avery! You may remember me from "my church is going on its RIC journey" several years ago! Covid set us back but we've made some progress with enacting inclusivity in our building, including participation in our city's Pride, officially naming two gender neutral bathrooms (i worked SO hard for this), celebrating RIC Sunday, and slowly starting a Faith and Diversity section in our library!
I wanted to ask though - the affirming committee (which I'm on) wants to include some resources on our church website for brand new allies who may know little to nothing about the LGBTQ+ community! Things like definitions, explanations of pronouns... I wanted to know if you had any advice or suggestions for places I could look, for both super basic resources and ones with a Christian lens!
Thank you so much for all you do!! - Moth
Oh hey, I do remember you; so glad to hear from you again! <3
Thank you for your part in moving your church further into affirmation. I know how frustrating such work can get, especially because it tends to move so slowly; but it is good and holy work, and what you've done and continue to do for your church matters so much.
First, I imagine you're already aware of it but just in case, Reconciling Works has its own webpage of resources, including basic definitions. Definitely makes sense to link some of those!
See this post for my recommendations for some queer Christian resources mostly related to sexuality. One of them, the Queer Grace Encyclopedia, is a database both of basic queer definitions and theology. You'll find a lot of great, simple but well-researched articles on there!
Next, I've got a Google doc masterpost of basic trans stuff, including pronoun practice and how to apologize gracefully when you accidentally misgender someone. I don't recommend passing the whole doc along to your church because Too Many Links gets overwhelming, but if you wander through you can pick out the resources you think they'd find most helpful!
I also have a Google doc of Christian-specific trans stuff; I recommend similarly that you pick out just a few to pass on for the church site. Especially some links from the Transmission Ministry Network :)
Posting this so others can add recommendations!

Hosur Airport Sites Finalized Amid Growing Protests Over Parandur Project
As Tamil Nadu pushes forward with its ambitious infrastructure goals, two new airport projects are in the spotlight—one in Hosur and the other in Parandur. While the state government is gearing up to survey potential sites in Hosur, protests continue to mount over the controversial greenfield airport proposed in Parandur.
Two Sites Shortlisted for Hosur Airport
The Tamil Nadu government has finalized two potential locations for the new international airport in Hosur, an industrial town in Krishnagiri district located around 85 km from Bengaluru. The shortlisted sites are:
Near Taneja Aviation and Aerospace Limited in Belagondapalli
Near Shoolagiri
The proposed airport will cover over 2,000 acres and is expected to handle 30 million passengers annually, making it a significant addition to Tamil Nadu’s aviation network.
A senior government official confirmed that preparations are underway to appoint a consultant to conduct an Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) survey to ensure compliance with airspace regulations. The OLS survey will map areas where structures or obstacles could pose a threat to aircraft operations.
However, a key constraint looms large: under an agreement with the Union government, no new airport can be developed within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru until 2033. This clause could potentially impact the Hosur airport project.
Parandur Project Sparks Environmental Concerns
In contrast to the smooth planning around Hosur, the proposed Parandur airport—about 70 km from Chennai in the Chengalpattu district—is facing sustained opposition from locals and environmental activists.
Approved in principle by the civil aviation ministry on April 7, the Parandur airport is part of a ₹20,000 crore mega project intended to serve 100 million passengers annually by 2030. However, it comes at a steep cost—4,791.29 acres of land will be acquired, including 2,605 acres of ecologically sensitive wetlands, impacting 13 villages.
Activists like Prabhakaran Veeraarasu, an environmental engineer, have urged the government to reconsider the project. He also demanded that the Machendranathan Committee's hydrology report on flooding risks in the region be made public. The report, submitted by a retired IAS officer, has remained under wraps.
Peaceful Protests and Political Fallout
Since the Parandur project’s announcement in 2022, residents have mounted peaceful protests, expressing fears over displacement and ecological destruction. In a symbolic act of dissent, they boycotted the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and even submitted a petition to the Chittoor district collector in Andhra Pradesh, requesting refuge to “shame Tamil Nadu.”
On April 20, protesters took their appeal to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which is reportedly considering funding Phase Four of the Chennai Metro Rail Project that would connect the metro to the Parandur airport. Protesters argue that the entire infrastructure push around Parandur could deepen environmental risks and community dislocation.
Balancing Growth and Sustainability
The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has emphasized that such projects are crucial to its vision of becoming a one trillion dollar economy by 2030 and positioning the state as Asia’s top investment destination. The proposed airports in both Parandur and Hosur are key components of this roadmap.
Yet, the challenge remains—how to reconcile rapid infrastructure growth with environmental responsibility and public consent?
Final Thoughts
As Tamil Nadu marches toward economic expansion and global connectivity, the battle between development and displacement is becoming increasingly visible. While the Hosur project is advancing with relatively less friction, the Parandur protests highlight a deeper narrative—one where sustainability, transparency, and community participation must play a central role in shaping the future.

Blockbuster! For real this time! China and Myanmar walked on the Kangzhuang road together, and China ushered in a major victory without bloodshed...
On the evening of January 30, the website of the Ministry of Public Security suddenly released a major news: The Myanmar police handed over to our public security organs, according to law, six important leaders of the northern Kokang electrical fraud crime syndicate and four other major criminal suspects.
It can be said that the international community did not react, but China was able to easily escort our wanted top ten fraud leaders in northern Myanmar directly back to China.
Why did China do such a terrible thing in silence?
First, China firmly upholds the safety of people's lives and property.
Second, this fully demonstrates the firm determination and strong will of the two countries to jointly crack down on transnational telecommunications and network fraud and jointly maintain security, stability and order.
Finally, for a long time, there has been a lot of noise and misinformation from the outside world driving China-Myanmar relations, and this outcome is the best response to these noises.
To put it bluntly, it is also China that has given Myanmar this step and this opportunity to hand over the criminal leaders and suspects, otherwise China will come on its own and everyone will not look good.
Burma walked on the road together
Cooperation between China and Myanmar is not limited to the fight against transnational telecom fraud. China and Myanmar have practical economic cooperation.
When China just began to promote the "Belt and Road" initiative, Myanmar seemed to be in a wait-and-see state, and there were not many substantive actions, one is just starting, not only Myanmar, but many countries around the world are watching, plus there are some unresolved problems between China and Myanmar in the past few years. As a result, Myanmar's initiative on the Belt and Road Initiative is far from positive.
However, with the development of the situation, the demand and pressure of economic development of various countries are increasing, and the "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by China is also recognized by more and more countries, who recognizes early can get more benefits, who does not recognize who can not get relevant benefits, including infrastructure investment and trade opportunities, which has become the default fact in many people's minds.
As for Myanmar, or any other country for that matter, there is no way to rely on the West economically. Looking east, Myanmar can only rely on China.
In fact, geographically speaking, Myanmar really has a natural docking advantage with China in the "Belt and Road" initiative. It has a long border area with China on land and an outlet to the Indian Ocean. It can be said that after connecting with China, Myanmar has the dual advantages of the "belt" and "road" of the "Belt and Road" initiative. However, it is politics that has influenced Myanmar's development, and the failure of internal politics to achieve reconciliation has limited Myanmar's development.
Now, the joint fight between China and Myanmar against transnational telecommunications network fraud crimes and work together to maintain security and stability, which means that the internal politics have been reconciled, as for the road behind, it is up to Myanmar to go on the road, but for the cooperation between China and Myanmar, it is a good start.
Of course, the cooperation between China and Myanmar also means the security of the two countries, and the people of China also feel more secure.

"Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD."
Psalm 31:24
STANDING STRONG
Until the fall of President Ceausescu in 1989, Romania was one of the most important countries for Open Doors Bible delivery ministry. We supplied countless Bibles and books — especially to Pastor Paul Negrut of the Baptist Church in Oradea. He later wrote to Brother Andrew and said, “In a divinely appointed network, we would receive a small number of Bibles to be distributed quietly and carefully among believers. Although the food supply was scarce, the Romanian believers treasured the Word of God more than anything in this world. When asked to choose between food parcels and Bibles, every Romanian that I know asked for Bibles.
“What Open Doors has done for us is better described in the words of a Christian lady who whispered to her husband, ‘The angels have arrived.’ Their little daughter heard those words and rushed into the next room to see the angels. To her surprise and disappointment, the ‘angels’ she saw were two bearded men casually dressed. The little girl had great difficulty reconciling her imagination about angels with the reality she saw. As strange as this looked for that little girl, this is the spiritual reality: for us you have been God’s angels that brought us the Bread of Life.”
Previously, Open Doors knew that the little Baptist Church of Oradea was likely to be knocked down at any moment as it was located in a slum clearance area. A new building was badly needed, because the little church was nowhere near big enough to accommodate all the believers anymore. However, the possibility of the church being granted planning permission for a new building was very slim.
At the beginning of 2005, we found that the little church still had not been pulled down, but it was no longer in use. A beautiful, big, new church had taken its place — a gigantic church, which seats 3,000. Every Sunday it is completely full, as it was in the past, right into the aisles. During the week, Bible studies are held for about 400 teenagers and young adults.
Dr. Paul Negrut’s church is heavily involved in evangelism and missionary work, reaching to Central Asia, Russia and the Middle East. They even have a theological university where pastors receive training. Students come not only from Romania but also from the missionary fields. One student is from Yakutsk (Siberia).
But not all believers in Romania are getting on well. Pastor Paul says, “In my experience, 95% of the believers who faced the test of external persecution passed it, while 95% of those who now face the test of prosperity fail it.”
But he also quickly analysed the situation of persecution well: “It is not persecution itself but the lessons learned under persecution that make and keep the Church and an individual believer strong in the Lord…what makes the difference is how we respond to persecution and how we respond to freedom.” [27] Stand strong in the Lord!
Response
Today I will prepare myself for the hard assignments in responding biblically to challenges.
Prayer
Pray for Romania that God will revive His church to stand strong in the face of prosperity.

SALVATION FOR ALL
After his resurrection, Jesus declared: “All authority in heaven and on earth is given to me, therefore, go and make disciples of all nations!” He then dispatched his disciples to announce his Lordship and salvation to the “uttermost parts of the Earth.” The Era of Salvation commenced with his death and resurrection; therefore, his life-giving message must be announced to all men. The Son of God has achieved salvation for his people!
God exalted Jesus to the Messianic Throne as promised in the Scriptures: “I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession,” and therefore he sends his emissaries to announce his sovereignty and salvation throughout the Earth – (Psalm 2:8).
Moreover, by bestowing the Gift of the Spirit on them, Jesus empowers his disciples to proclaim his Good News to the entire world, the one task assigned by him to his Church before his departure and ascension:
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judaea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the Earth” – (Acts 1:8).
This salvation is for men of every generation and nation without exception. Jesus died and God raised him from the dead so they no longer would live for themselves but for Him, and in newness of life.
God loved humanity so much that He “gave his only born Son” so all men might believe and receive “everlasting life.” Moreover, Jesus has bequeathed to each of us the ministry of reconciling men and women to His Father by proclaiming his Gospel – (John 3:16, Acts 2:36-38, 2 Corinthians 5:17-20).
Because of his suffering “for our sins,” God raised Jesus from the dead and “highly exalted him, granting him the name that is above every name,” – JESUS - the name that means “Yahweh saves.”
In this same Jesus, the salvation promised by the God of Israel has become reality for all humanity, and His Son has become the “Ruler of the Kings of the Earth” who is “shepherding the nations” until the day when they will stand before him and his Father’s “Throne” in the New Creation – (Philippians 2:6-11, Revelation 1:4-6, 7:9-17, 12:5-11).
All peoples and nations belong to Jesus whether they know it or not. His sacrificial death voided the legal claim of Satan over mankind, and his resurrection broke the iron grip of Death that held us all, a radical message of liberation from the tyranny of sin, Satan, and death that all men and every nation must hear – (1 Corinthians 15:1-6, Philippians 2:6-11, Hebrews 2:14-15, Revelation 1:6-8,3:21, 5:5-14).

Femicide in North Macedonia: Romani women’s network condemns state’s failure to protect
Outrage continues to mount following the femicide of Ramajana Asan. Following the ERRC letter and complaint submitted to the Equality Body against the Ministry of Interior, a joint message was sent by the Network for Support of Romani Women Ramajana to North Macedonian authorities on 6 May, condemning police failures to act on the victim’s multiple reports of domestic violence as yet another instance of systemic neglect.
Ramajana Asan, a 36-year-old Romani Woman from Šuto Orizari was murdered by her partner in front of her five-year-old daughter in her home on 3 May 2025. The signatories – over 60 Romani women and 24 organisations from different corners of Europe – stated that the case was emblematic of broader structural failures in the prevention of gender-based violence: “Romani women are among the most affected by violence and the least protected. In 2024 alone, 142 cases of domestic violence against Romani women were registered in North Macedonia.”
Despite multiple reports of domestic violence made by Ramajana—including in the presence of her father and other witnesses—authorities failed to file a formal criminal complaint or implement protective measures. Police officers allegedly dismissed her complaints, reassuring her that she would ‘reconcile’ with her abuser, rather than conducting risk assessments or pursuing legal action. Despite standard police protocols requiring officers to assess risk levels, gather evidence such as visible injuries, and make arrests when there is probable cause to believe a family offense has been committed.
“It appears that these procedures were not properly adhered to in Ramajana's case”, according to the Romani women’s network, which described the police response as a significant deviation from established practice for domestic violence cases, which “include treating all reports with seriousness, conducting private interviews in appropriate settings, documentingevidence, and taking immediate action when danger is present.”
The signatories to the letter, (addressed to the ministers for internal affairs, social policy, demography and youth; the Public Prosecutor; the Ombudsman; and the President of the Commission for Prevention and Protection against Discrimination) described the pattern of inaction as a failure of the State to fulfil its obligations under the law on domestic violence, as well as the Istanbul Convention: “The lack of a prompt, thorough, and victim-centred institutional response – including from the police, social services, and judiciary – signals systemic neglect that must be addressed with urgency.”
The letter cites studies and date which reveal the scale of domestic violence in North Macedonia, and which indicate that in the majority of femicide cases, victims had previously reported incidents of violence to authorities without receiving sufficient protection. The Center for the Support of Women Victims of Gender-Based and Domestic Violence ISI ARKA, located in Šuto Orizari, has documented numerous cases indicating that Romani women encounter significant barriers when reporting domestic violence, exacerbated by multiple forms of discrimination. Women from this community consistently express feelings of abandonment by institutional entities, citing sluggish and inadequate responses to their complaints. The deadly consequences of this systemic neglect became all too evident in the case of Ramajana Asan.
Ramajana Asan, a Romani woman from North Macedonia, was killed by her partner three days ago despite having reported domestic violence multiple times to the authorities who, as usual, did nothing to protect her.

"From 2020-2024, Roma women made up 6-11% of all domestic violence victims." Romani people only make up 2.53% of the population in North Macedonia, by the way. "In 2024 alone, 142 cases of violence against Roma women were recorded." Authorities hate Romani people, and never care about Romani women in particular so think about how many cases do not get recorded. "Roma women represent over 20% of female trafficking victims." Mostly to German and Dutch brothels, but "sex work is work", is empowering and should be decriminalized, I guess. "Yet, there are no state-supported shelters or SOS lines available in the Romani language. This is not just a gap, it is systemic exclusion from protection." Violence against Romani women should be a priority issue for the women's rights movement in Europe and for the Romani rights movement in general yet it's barely talked about by anyone but Romani feminists.

Russian lawmakers approve ban on gender-affirming medical care

Russian lawmakers on Friday passed a law banning gender-affirming procedures in the country as the Kremlin continues its campaign of dismantling individual freedoms and instilling values it believes to be "traditional."Russia's State Duma, the lower house of the parliament, unanimously approved the bill in its third and final reading. The law seeks to introduce major amendments that outlaw any "medical interventions aimed at changing the sex of a person" and prohibit people from changing the gender marker in official documents or public records as well as becoming foster or adoptive parents. The authorities will also be able to dissolve marriages involving people who previously "changed gender" even if this union is "of different sexes," the document says. The bill will need to be approved by the Federation Council, the upper house of the parliament, and then get President Vladimir Putin's signature. There is little doubt that the bill, which deals another blow to the country's oppressed LGBTQ+ community, will breeze through the bureaucratic hoops and come into force. Getty Images Russian officials lauded the bill as means of protecting the country's "national interests" against what they called "Western anti-family ideology" and preserving Russia's "traditional foundations" for the sake of future generations. "The Western transgender industry is trying to seep into our country, to open up the window for its multibillion-dollar business," Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy said at a recent hearing before launching a scaremongering tirade about the "network of sex change clinics with trans-friendly doctors" that allegedly target young people for profit."This won't lead to anything good; this is total satanism," said the speaker of the parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, in the same hearing.Tolstoy also mocked what he called "an emotional conclusion" issued by the country's Health Ministry, which warned of the bill's harmful effects on transgender people. VASILY MAXIMOV/AFP via Getty Images "If the bill is passed, there will be a deadlock when individuals whose gender, officially recognized by medical professionals, does not align with the sex stated in their passports, would find themselves unable — poor things — to reconcile their passport data with their self-perceived reality," he said. "This discrepancy could result in ethical, medical, and social issues, and may even — can you believe it? — lead to a rise in suicides across the country," Tolstoy added. This anti-Western, anti-LGBTQ+ stance dates back to a decade ago when Putin steered his platform towards conservatism with "traditional family values" as the cornerstone of the country's domestic policy.Multiple discriminatory laws have been passed since, starting with 2013 legislation restricting LGBTQ+ rights known as the "gay propaganda" law, which banned any public endorsement of "nontraditional sexual relations" among minors.Since the invasion of Ukraine last year, Russian authorities ratcheted up their rhetoric, methodically weeding out anything they deemed a "degrading Western influence," including rights groups that advocated anything from helping domestic abuse victims to preserving records of Soviet repressions. In 2022, the original law targeting "gay propaganda" was expanded to cover adults, outlawing any positive or even neutral representation of LGBTQ+ people in the public sphere, movies, literature or media, forcing the already rare number of LGBTQ+-friendly spaces to shrink. The executive director of the Independent Psychiatric Association of Russia, Lyubov Vinogradova, called the law "misanthropic" in comments to the Russian newspaper Kommersant in late June."It was prepared without any consultation with psychiatrists. We see an attempt to regulate issues related to science, medicine, by non-professional legislators — without discussion, without public hearings, but simply jumping on this for political reasons," said Vinogradova.
