it was as if my whining post summoned the ups guy lol. got the package from the UPS guy came with the package. some initial thoughts:
those people were right when they said that the hinges felt a little flimsy. that display assembly does bounce in a way that isn't uh.... good.
i already despise windows 11 and I've used for a grand total of 1 minute. take meeeeee back.
I'm not a huge fan of the touchpad, but that's not a deal breaker because i already own like 5 different mice. once you go mac on touchpads, you never go back. it's one of those hardware things that apple really has gotten right. obviously the pinnacle of apple touchpads in my mind is the glass touchpad that they had on the plastic body unibody macs. the responsivity on that is *chef's kiss*. The gesture responsivity on the macbook pro touchpads is also fantastic.
I quite like the keyboard, the glowing blue backlight is fun and the chicklet keys are well spaced.
the fans are somewhat loud, but uh being a person of many old computers i am used to that. i think they're also just loud because the computer has so many vents that really let you hear that.
why do all modern laptops ever seem to only have like 2 usb ports, trash. it has always been one of my big complaints about macbooks and apparently people making pcs copied apple's homework on that. you would think that with all the space they saved on one side of the computer by not having an optical drive they could stick some bonus port in there, but noooo. no modern computer manufacturer is going to do this. we can't have nice functional port laden computers like the dell latitude xps (2003).
not a huge fan of the location of the charging port on this thing. also magsafe chargers on mac are the bomb and everyone should do that so that no computer suffers the death of my samsung pc (2010-2014) via cord trip (by way of cat).
haven't had a chance to really play around with it yet because i've been trying to figure out how to make a restorable system image of my old system (now only a hard drive) because the backup that I did have of the system, uh, got corrupted rip.
i feel clever because i tricked my new pc into booting to my externally connected old hard drive, thus enabling me to access my old system. There was enough hardware that used generic drivers for this to work. Notably however, the wireless lan card drivers were not the same, so the computer couldn't connect to the internet because it didn't know that it had a wlan card, which lmaooooo. fortunately i am fairly tech savvy, so I found out that the good folks over at msi offered downloads of the hardware drivers in their computers (a+ to them), and downloaded this driver installer to my macbook. I then found a flash drive, erased it using diskutil and reformatted it FAT32 so windows could read it. I then copied the driver installer to this flash drive, plugged the flash drive into the computer, copied the driver installer to the downloads folder, uncompressed it and installed it. With that installed, I was able to retrieve the other missing drivers, and the date/time mismatch error resolved. After some regedits and other tweaks, it was time to start the back up
the first backup did not work, but I think that had more to do with the peripherals getting yoinked in a way they did not appreciate. Going for a take 2 on the backup using the windows 7 legacy backup and restore tool from control panel. hopefully this works overnight and does what I want it to do.

Hard drive formats extfs 2

#Hard drive formats extfs 2 portable
#Hard drive formats extfs 2 Pc
#Hard drive formats extfs 2 mac
#Hard drive formats extfs 2 windows
When you’ve completed the process, you can open the external drive by clicking the drive’s icon on the desktop of your Mac.
Click Erase, and the system will reformat your drive.
Keep the Scheme set to GUID Partition Map.
Give your drive a name and select the file system you want from the Format drop-down: macOS Extended (Journaled) for an HDD or APFS for an SSD.
Choose your external drive from the left sidebar and click Erase.
Click the Go menu, select Utilities from the drop-down menu, and open Disk Utility.
If you already have data stored on the drive, back that data up elsewhere, reformat the drive, and then put your data back on the drive. Reformatting deletes all data stored on the drive, so if you know you’ll need to reformat a drive, do so as soon as you buy it. Now that you’ve figured out the differences, it’s time to reformat your hard drive.
#Hard drive formats extfs 2 windows
It’s possible, but tricky, to change the size of a partition later on in Windows and macOS we recommend backing up the data on your drive before attempting the task, since it’s possible to wipe your drive doing this. Make sure to leave plenty of room for future backups on both partitions. Now your computer will see your single physical drive as multiple, smaller drives.
#Hard drive formats extfs 2 Pc
First, partition the drive using Disk Utility in macOS and (using our walk-through below) format one part as HFS+ and the other as FAT32 then, plug the drive into your Windows PC and reformat the FAT32 portion as NTFS. If you want to use a single external hard drive for both File History and Time Machine backups, you can partition it so that some of the drive is NTFS and the remainder is HFS+.Unfortunately, FAT32 isn’t any good for storing movies and other large files, as it has a size limit of 4 GB per file, so your files have to be small. FAT32 was introduced in Windows 95 in 1997, but it remains useful because nearly every system can work with it. FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32) is an older file system that both Windows machines and Macs still support.exFAT works on both macOS and Windows, and it doesn’t have the 4 GB file-size limit that FAT32 does, so you’ll be able to back up movies and other large files.
#Hard drive formats extfs 2 mac
If you need to transfer files between Mac and Windows computers, exFAT (extended File Allocation Table) is the best option, although it doesn’t work with File History or Time Machine.
If you’re using an SSD, there is a newer format called APFS (Apple File System), which is intended for built-in drives and external SSDs for newer Macs.
(Check the product listing to confirm the drive will be labeled as an HDD or SSD.)
If you plan to use an external hard drive (HDD), which costs less than an external solid-state drive (SSD) for more storage capacity but has the downside of slower transfer times and a far less durable design, you should use HFS+ (Hierarchical File System Plus, also called macOS Extended Journaled). Typically, if an external drive is physically larger than a deck or cards or has more than 2 TB of storage, it’s an HDD.
macOS and Linux computers, however, can only read files stored on such a drive they cannot write to an NTFS-formatted drive. NTFS is native to Windows, and most hard drives are preformatted for this file system.
If you plan to use your drive for File History backups on a Windows computer, and you use only Windows, stick to NTFS (New Technology File System).
So how do those five file systems differ, and which one is right for you? Non-Linux computers can use five main file systems: NTFS, HFS+, APFS, exFAT, and FAT32. If you use a Mac, the likelihood that you’ll have to reformat the drive is higher. But if you buy a drive secondhand or if you plan to switch between operating systems, you may still need to reformat it for use on Windows.
#Hard drive formats extfs 2 portable
If you buy an external drive-such as one of our recommended portable or desktop hard drives, portable solid-state drives, or USB 3.0 flash drives-you may need to reformat it to work with your operating system of choice, since different operating systems use different file systems to process data.Īlthough it’s true that any drive is compatible with both Windows and macOS once it’s formatted properly, most drives come preformatted for Windows out of the box.

Overall we're looking at the package here and from out of box to backing up, the Seagate drive gets it done. And being able to backing-up from a mobile device and Facebook can be important to the consumer that spends a bulk of their time on mobile devices versus computers. Storing multiple copies of a given file is important to anyone who may need to restore back to an earlier draft, from a mistake or from a disaster. Being able to switch between Windows and Mac without reformatting is a big plus. While not having the fastest speeds in our testing, the main focus of the Seagate Plus Desktop Drive 5TB is an easy way to centralize all of a user's backups easily and have plenty of capacity to spare. The drive can be set for automatic backups, mobile backups through iOS and Android, and it can support backing up from online services like Facebook. It supports both Mac and Windows OS and can be used between the two interchangeably without reformatting. The Seagate Plus Desktop Drive 5TB is a USB 3.0 connected external hard drive with a backup-centric focus. Seagate has a clean and easy to use suite that is very good and worth installing.
#BACKUP SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO TIME MACHINE DRIVE SOFTWARE#
In the external drive market a lot of software gets bundled together with the drives but very little of it is actually useful. The dashboard also provides usage information about the drive and includes drive health information and support options. The software manages backups either manually or via schedule and what's more it can support backing up mobile devices and images from social media sites like Facebook and Flickr.
#BACKUP SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO TIME MACHINE DRIVE PC#
When testing with 2MB random transfer speeds, which is a less practical use case for this product, the Seagate Backup Plus measured read and write speeds at 26MB/s and 64MB/s respectively.įor those backing up with a Mac, Time Machine will be the likely backup client of choice, but for PC users Seagate includes what is one of the most robust software solutions available. The Seagate Plus Desktop Drive 5TB clocked in at a not terribly impressive 108MB/s in the write column and 185MB/s in the read. Using our Consumer Testing Platform, we measured 2MB sequential speeds. The back of the device has a micro USB 3.0 port and a power supply port on the lower right-hand side, like all 3.5" desktop drives, the drive draws too much power to be bus-powered through the USB port. The sides of the drive have plenty of ventilation in a tessellating triangle pattern. The front of the device has Seagate branding in the bottom lower right side. It has a flat back plastic case on the top and sides with a blue plastic bottom. The Seagate Plus Desktop Drive 5TB is slightly larger than a 3.5” HDD on its own.
#BACKUP SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO TIME MACHINE DRIVE MAC OS#
OS suppurted: Windows 7, 8, Vista, XP Mac OS 10.4.6 or later.
Seagate Plus Desktop Drive 5TB specifications: Seagate also offers the drive in 2TB, 3TB and 4TB capacities. The Seagate Plus Desktop Drive 5TB comes with a 2-year limited warranty and has a street price of $220. And with the Share feature, users can upload multiple files at once to social networks from their Desktop Drive.
#BACKUP SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO TIME MACHINE DRIVE ANDROID#
The Seagate Mobile Backup app allows iOS or Android users to backup up all photos and videos from their mobile device to the drive. Multiple copies of data can be stored, in cases like disaster or accidental rewrites. Seagate ships the drive with backup software that handles all of the heavy lifting. On the Seagate Dashboard, using the Protect function users can easily schedule automatic backups.
#BACKUP SEAGATE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO TIME MACHINE DRIVE FOR MAC#
Users can install the preloaded NTFS driver for Mac and then use the drive back and forth between Windows and Mac without reformatting. The Backup Plus 5TB is USB 3.0 connected and supports Windows 7,8, Vista, and XP as well as Mac OS 10.4.6 and later. Storing all one’s data from a desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone, and social media can quickly added up to large amounts of storage space. With more devices creating content, consumers find that they need more and more room to backup or store their data. The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive 5TB is an external hard drive with plenty of capacity.
