NEON LIGHTS - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: Momentum Pictures

SYNOPSIS: Tech tycoon, Clay Amani, is on the verge of a hostile takeover. One the verge of a nervous breakdown his therapist advises Clay to retreat to an off the grid location for a family reunion with his misfit siblings, in order to try and overcome his mental health disorders and childhood traumas. But things go awry, and Clay finds himself fighting for more than just his company, when guests begin disappearing.

REVIEW: Rouzbeh Heydari’s NEON LIGHTS is an attempt at this genre bending thriller that tries to explore perception, reality, and trauma. It’s a nonlinear mix of elements that comes across as confusing as it struggles to be clever.

The plot is rather simple, but layout is perplexing as it trudges along and only offers some answers in the final act. I might suggest it feels like Norman Bates swapped into the 2003 film “Identity.” There are numerous juxtaposed moments that leave the viewer wondering what is the truth here. As Clay attempts to work through things, is what we are presented with actually happening, has already transpired, or are these Clay’s memories influenced by his fractured psyche? Given the implications of the final act, some scenes with certain characters feel invalidated. They’re clearly presented as a distraction based on what we are to believe given the film’s climax. The film lacks any subtlety as Clay’s protagonist is actualized in the narrative. A projection of Clay’s mind, it just falls short of being a “supernatural” presence that Clay has energized. The characters felt stereotypical and clearly there to be the recipients of an act of violence. I should have felt something for Clay but there is no hook for empathy. Even the character of Blair who is dragged into this maelstrom feels. I totally get what they were trying to do but it never gels and is a glorious train wreck.

Given the nature of the story, the visuals could have had a bit more style and finesse. It’s shot rather flat. It feels like a network sitcom or drama. The cinematography, editing and production designs are not bad, they’re just vanilla. It does nothing to enhance the mystery or suspense, or even the horror.

Overall, the acting here is fine. There seems little on the page to help them to round out these characters. I know these “types,” and never cared for them. Kim Coates creates this character, in cocktail attire, that feels a bit Mrs. Bates & a dash Freddy Kruger, minus the razor glover and scars. When he is on, he is on and there wasn’t more beyond that. Dana Abraham just doesn’t do much with the character. He swings between a constant state of being on the verge of an emotional breakdown, looking like he is about to explode, exhibiting these ticks that might indicate he is on the spectrum, or this nervous laugh that was initially interesting but quickly becomes annoying.

NEON LIGHTS is an interesting concept that goes awry and didn’t work for me. For something so complex, it is shot very utilitarian. I felt like a spectator, never being drawn into the drama and with not a care for any of these characters. For all the filmmakers’ attempts to be crafty and innovative, the final act falls into derivative plot devices with an ending that feels like a “poor man’s” attempt at presenting a homage to the end of “Psycho.” The trailer and the press notes had me expecting more, but by the end I was disappointed and short changed. Again, there are elements present that allow me to say it’s not a bad film, it’s simply not a film that delivers on expectations.

Heart of the Holidays (Hallmark, 2020)

I could seriously eat my way out of a room of spring rolls right now.

In My Humble Opinion: Time continues to have the audacity to keep moving forward. So here we are once again, at the Hallmark Thanksgiving Week Event. In a world full of changes, it’s almost comforting to see intersitials with Candace Cameron Bure in winter wear speaking platitudes about the magic of Christmas. This year she added a fascinating tiara-headband peace to the ensemble that I find fascinating.

This set-up feels like home in a way. We are back and we are now officially in the thick of new premiere craziness! Strap in!

The little known secret about the Hallmark Thanksgiving Week Event is that not all movies in the line-up are created equally. In fact, you can easily rank how much Hallmark cares about a movie by what day it gets. Candace? She always get the prime spot of Sunday. Lacey Chabert will usually get either Friday or Saturday spot, a Hallmark Hall of Fame premiere withstanding. Basically, the earlier in the week you are, the less Hallmark really cares about you. So the Monday movie? That’s the one they have the least amount of faith in ratings-wise.

It’s not surprising to see Heart of the Holidays in that spot. It’s one of their only acquisitions of the line-up. It stars two people who are not Hallmark regulars. And well, the quality is not great. It is a dud.

There’s nothing aggressively bad about Heart of the Holidays, but it is so incredibly formulaic that it plays like a parody at a certain point. Small town girl goes home and realizes that is what she missed all along! There’s her high school boyfriend, they will fall in love. He owns a coffeeshop. There’s a best friend with kids and busybody elderly woman and a lot of charity work set to pop music you can get for cheap. I can’t imagine willingly seeking this movie out for entertainment because everything in it has been done better in other movies.

Plus, if you watch it outside of this airing you miss out on Candace Cameron Bure’s weird headband, and that was what truly mattered here. The intersitial accessories.

Watch If: You think people who own movie star boots have their lives together, if you are the Sonny to your mom’s Cher or if you haven’t seen your toes since 2014.

Skip If: You think Christmas is a fine day to run errands, if you like soupy butter or if you don’t believe in baking second chances.

For Daryle Williams, a new dean at UC Riverside, higher education is about understanding one’s experiences through the stories of others — piecing together detailed histories, putting real faces to numbers.

Williams, a historian and former associate dean at the University of Maryland, is bringing the online database Enslaved.org to the university, UC Riverside has announced. The tool, which Williams helped build, will involve UCR students and faculty to help collect data about the lives and experiences of enslaved people.

“We wanted to know, what was it like to be enslaved? How would I be able to recover the stories of my ancestors or of my community?” Williams said. “So we work with technologies, tools, expertise and the public interest that is out there to make available what is now this full database.”

Enslaved.org, launched as a full website in December 2020, allows people — from genealogists and scholars to those seeking answers about their family’s history — to search for documented individuals in the transatlantic slave trade and beyond.

The project was launched at Michigan State University, with help from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It has since spread to involve researchers at Harvard University, the College of William & Mary, the University of Maryland and now UCR — which will become the first university partner on the West Coast.

Williams, who specializes in 19th-century Brazilian slave society, said that the free, open-access database will help people understand that the lives of the enslaved are “fragmented pieces” of a real life.

“The (data) shows fragmented pieces of an individual who may have been married, arrested; who fled, who was sold, bartered, had a child, who lived in a cohort with other enslaved people … many different incidents in a slave’s life, in spreadsheet cells,” said Wiliams, who will be the new dean of UCR’s College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

By involving UCR in documenting the data and in research, Williams hopes students will also discover how this area of the Inland Empire — once part of Alta California, Mexico — played a role in early American history.

“It challenges us to think about (how it) becomes part of our identity, our connection to American history — which is also Spanish, Mexican, Pacific, Indigenous and African history. How do they connect to the conversation about understanding enslavement, and using data sciences as the humanities?”

Professor Michele Renee Salzman, chair of UCR’s history department, said that Enslaved.org will provide “tremendous opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students and faculty to explore new research questions with rigor,” and that it “allows humanists to develop standards for research using digital databases.”

Hardy Brown II, chairman of the Inland Empire-based Black Voice Foundation, collects artifacts and records from the slave era for the foundation, helps lead the Black Voice Footsteps to Freedom Underground Railroad Study Tour. He is eager to work with Williams and the team in building the Enslaved.org database locally, including many of the foundation’s primary sources.

“It’s a great repository of information online; it will be great for the university, for student researchers, and will add to the work we do in Footsteps to Freedom and to our archives,” Brown said. “(Black) families being educated about their history, how their family members learned and fought for freedom — even though it was illegal — this information will keep them resilient.”

The website database isn’t just for African Americans, Brown said, adding that “this is everybody’s story.”

For Williams, who is excited to bring his Enslaved.org work to UCR, it’s about “saying the names” and stories of the millions of Africans who were enslaved over the centuries — especially in the context of modern social justice movements like #BlackLivesMatter.

“In our data work, we are saying their names, and we’re making that name, visible, discoverable, linked, sustainable, preserved,” he said, “recognizing the humanity of individuals who — structurally, politically or culturally — are not always understood to be fully human, fully citizen or fully worthy.”

MANILA – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Denold Sinas has ordered another revamp of senior police officials as part of reorganizing the country's police force.

In an order dated Nov. 29, Maj. Gen. Celso Pestaño, head of the Directorate for Information and Communication Technology (DICTM) and Brig. Gen. Wilfredo Cayat, Commandant of Cadets of the PNP Academy (PNPA), were both reassigned to the Office of the Chief PNP (OCPNP).

Replacing Pestaño is Brig. Gen. Albert Ignatius Ferro from Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO 7) while Brig. Gen. Conrado Gongon Jr., from the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Western Mindanao (DIPO-WM), was assigned to the Communications and Electronics Service (CES).

Gongon replaces Brig. Gen. Joey Runes, who was assigned to the OCPNP.

Brig. Gen. Danilo Macerin, from the Directorate for Operations (DO), was moved to the National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) while Brig. Gen. Ronnie Montejo, chief of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), was assigned to PRO 7.

Brig. Gen. Ronald Escobar Olay, from NCRPO, was transferred to DO.

From the PRO 6 (Western Visayas), Brig. Gen. Rene Pamuspusan was assigned to the Directorate for Plans (DPL) while Brig. Gen. Antonio Yarra was assigned to the NCRPO from the PRO 4-A (Calabarzon).

From the DPL, Maj. Gen. Jonas Calleja was transferred to the OCPNP while Brig. Gen. Jesus Cambay Jr. was assigned to the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Southern Luzon (DIPO-SL), from the PRO 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula).

From the OCPNP, Brig. Gen. Walter Castillejos was assigned to the DPL while Brig. Gen. Eliseo Cruz was assigned to the NCRPO from the DPL.

Meanwhile, Directorate for Human Resource Doctrine and Development (DHRDD) chief Brig. Gen. Armando de Leon was assigned to the DICTM while Brig. Gen. Leo Francisco, from the PRO 3 (Central Luzon) was assigned to the NCRPO.

Brig. Gen. Rolando Miranda, director of the Manila Police District (MPD) was assigned to PRO 6; Brig. Gen. Mario Rariza Jr, from DIPO SL to OCPNP; Brig. Gen. Herminio Tadeo Jr., from DICTM to DHRDD; and Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Evangelista Ylagan, from Northern Police District (NPD) to PRO 9.

More officials were part of the reshuffle directed by Sinas.

Some lower ranking officials were also reassigned namely: Col. Juan Binamira Añonuevo, from NCRPO to DIPO Northern Luzon; Col. Jose Santiago Hidalgo Jr., from NCRPO to DIPO Western Mindanao; Col. Arcadio Abadiano Jamora Jr., from DIPO NL to PNPA; Col. Ysmael Salonga Yu, from the Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit of the Directorate for Personnel and Records Management (DPRM) to PRO 4-A; Col. Neil Buaquena Alinsangan, from the Directorate for Intelligence to Civil Security Group (CSG); Col. Narciso Damaso Domingo, from NCRPO to PRO 3; and Col. Rommel Francisco Dayleg Marbil, from CSG to DPL.
