‘The Lion King’ Follow-Up Set With ‘Moonlight’ Director Barry Jenkins To Helm For Walt Disney Studios

The Walt Disney Studios has set Oscar winner Barry Jenkins to direct the studio’s follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster The Lion King. Jeff Nathanson, who scripted the last installment, is back in the fold and has completed an initial draft of script. Jenkins won the Oscar for scripting the Best Picture winner Moonlight and was nominated for adapting If Beale Street Could Talk (he directed both).

The film will continue with the photo-realistic technology that director Jon Favreau used in the 2019 film and 2016’s The Jungle Book. There is no release date set for The Lion King follow-up or for the production start, but it is understandably a top priority for Sean Bailey’s division after the last film grossed $1.6 billion worldwide.

They are keeping the logline under wraps, but I’m told that the story will further explore the mythology of the characters, including Mufasa’s origin story. Moving the story forward while looking back conjures memories of The Godfather: Part II, set on the African plain with a continuation of the tradition of music that was a key part of the 1994 animated classic, the 2019 film and the blockbuster Broadway stage transfer.

This is Jenkins’ second film project at Disney, as he is also planning to direct a biopic of famed choreographer Alvin Ailey for Searchlight. Jenkins has completed for Amazon a limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s National Book Award- and Pulitzer-winning The Underground Railroad, directing all the episodes and writing several of them. Jenkins has separately scripted a drama based on the first American female Olympic boxing champ, Clarissa “T-Rex” Shields, and an adaptation of Netflix documentary Virunga, about the battle to save the Congo’s mountain gorilla population.

Jenkins’ PASTEL partners Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak are expected to come aboard The Lion King follow-up as producers.

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”

Along with 2019’s The Lion King, Nathanson’s credits on the blockbuster track include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Catch Me If You Can, and Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3.

No immediate word on cast. The last installment’s voice cast included Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Alfre Woodard, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones, John Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key, Eric Andre, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Amy Sedaris and Chance the Rapper. Townhouses and condominiums are typically less expensive alternatives to standalone houses. Tech Stocks Google, Snap, Twitter Jump Higher

Another busy day in the land of tech stocks, and the news is still (mostly) good. You’ll recall that on Tuesday, Snap impressed and on Wednesday it was Facebook’s turn. On Thursday, the good cheer spread to Google, Intel, and Expedia, though Amazon was less pleasing. And by Friday morning, Twitter was in on the party, too.

Given how much ink and/or pixels we’ve spilled on the story of the “tech-lash” and all the regulatory problems ahead, it’s worth noting that the core businesses of the largest companies are still chugging ahead. In an economy where the U.S. gross domestic product is growing at less than 3%, Snap’s revenue grew 48%, Facebook grew 28%, and Google increased 19%. Even “disappointing” Amazon grew sales 19%. And it’s all been pretty well anticipated on Wall Street, as these same companies have (mostly) been among the best performers on the stock market as well. As of yesterday’s close, Snap’s share price was up 221%, Facebook’s 53%, and Amazon’s 31%. Google was lagging with only a 9% gain, but it’s up another 8% in premarket trading this morning.

“Like a championship boxer that had been momentarily and unexpectedly knocked to the canvas, Alphabet delivered a series of well-timed punches that returned them to previous winning form,” analyst Michael Nathanson observed.

It’s always clever to predict that things are about to change, but most of the time, they stay the same. A body in motion tends to stay in motion, as Sir Isaac Newton phrased it. The basic trends feeding the tech giants, like the shift to online entertainment and e-commerce and the proliferation of more computing power and connectivity to more people and more places, continue unbated. It will take some awfully significant regulatory changes to alter that momentum.

Next week, we hear from Apple. Wall Street analysts expect Tuesday’s report will show that sales came in around $53.4 billion, unchanged from last year (when Apple’s revenue was still growing a healthy 17%). Falling iPhone sales should be offset by rising sales of services, wearables, and maybe iPads, according to the consensus view. But apple’s stock price has also risen a healthy 32% in 2019. Let’s see if Tim Cook & Co. can keep the party rolling.

Called it, II. Speaking of news events you probably anticipated, Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank Group closed the fundraising for its second massive tech investing fund, dubbed the Vision Fund 2, with $108 billion commitments from investors including Apple and Microsoft.

Called it, part three. Okay, I know those last two items were fairly predictable, but this one was an absolute lock. Remember at the height of bitcoin mania in late 2017 when small-cap stock Long Island Iced Tea Corp. changed its name to Long Blockchain, sending its share price up almost 300%? Now the FBI is investigating the company for possible insider trading and securities fraud, Quartz reports. Shocker.

So called it. Predictable? This one was fated, set in stone, undeniable. the Senate finally released a redacted version of its investigation of Russian attacks on the 2016 election. With all the problems Facebook faces in Washington, D.C., it needs all the allies it can muster. Apparently, co-founder and former top exec Chris Hughes won’t be among them. Hughes, it seems, is making the rounds on Capitol Hill to explain why Facebook should be curtailed. It’s kind of…ironic, given his half a billion dollar haul from Facebook stock. But as Washington Post reporters Elizabeth Dwoskin and Tony Romm discovered, that hasn’t stopped Hughes from making the anti-Facebook case.

After House lawmakers embarked on their broad antitrust investigation of Facebook and its fellow tech giants in June, one of the first people they consulted was Hughes, said Rep. David N. Cicilline (D-R.I.), chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust law. Hughes quietly paid a visit to members of the House’s top competition-focused panel earlier this month, meeting with lawmakers and their staff members to pitch many of the issues he raised in his op-ed.

Hughes presented his views as a former Facebook insider, something that lent credence to his arguments, Cicilline said. “It’s remarkable and significant to me and my colleagues that someone with such a role in creating the company has the capacity and courage, really, to say, ‘We have some challenges, some things to look at.’ ”

With all the problems Facebook faces in Washington, D.C., it needs all the allies it can muster. Apparently, co-founder and former top exec Chris Hughes won’t be among them. Hughes, it seems, is making the rounds on Capitol Hill to explain why Facebook should be curtailed. It’s kind of…ironic, given his half a billion dollar haul from Facebook stock. But as Washington Post reporters Elizabeth Dwoskin and Tony Romm discovered, that hasn’t stopped Hughes from making the anti-Facebook case.

After House lawmakers embarked on their broad antitrust investigation of Facebook and its fellow tech giants in June, one of the first people they consulted was Hughes, said Rep. David N. Cicilline (D-R.I.), chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust law. Hughes quietly paid a visit to members of the House’s top competition-focused panel earlier this month, meeting with lawmakers and their staff members to pitch many of the issues he raised in his op-ed.

Hughes presented his views as a former Facebook insider, something that lent credence to his arguments, Cicilline said. “It’s remarkable and significant to me and my colleagues that someone with such a role in creating the company has the capacity and courage, really, to say, ‘We have some challenges, some things to look at.’ ”

A long-time science fiction staple is turning into reality. A SpaceX rocket last month lofted the Planetary Society’s LightSail 2 spacecraft into orbit and, on Tuesday, it was time to test the craft’s futuristic feature: a solar sail. The tiny craft, about the size of a shoebox, successfully deployed the sail, which can catch photons from the sun to generate thrust. There’s even video.

Tech Stocks Google, Snap, Twitter Jump Higher

Another busy day in the land of tech stocks, and the news is still (mostly) good. You’ll recall that on Tuesday, Snap impressed and on Wednesday it was Facebook’s turn. On Thursday, the good cheer spread to Google, Intel, and Expedia, though Amazon was less pleasing. And by Friday morning, Twitter was in on the party, too.

Given how much ink and/or pixels we’ve spilled on the story of the “tech-lash” and all the regulatory problems ahead, it’s worth noting that the core businesses of the largest companies are still chugging ahead. In an economy where the U.S. gross domestic product is growing at less than 3%, Snap’s revenue grew 48%, Facebook grew 28%, and Google increased 19%. Even “disappointing” Amazon grew sales 19%. And it’s all been pretty well anticipated on Wall Street, as these same companies have (mostly) been among the best performers on the stock market as well. As of yesterday’s close, Snap’s share price was up 221%, Facebook’s 53%, and Amazon’s 31%. Google was lagging with only a 9% gain, but it’s up another 8% in premarket trading this morning.

“Like a championship boxer that had been momentarily and unexpectedly knocked to the canvas, Alphabet delivered a series of well-timed punches that returned them to previous winning form,” analyst Michael Nathanson observed.

It’s always clever to predict that things are about to change, but most of the time, they stay the same. A body in motion tends to stay in motion, as Sir Isaac Newton phrased it. The basic trends feeding the tech giants, like the shift to online entertainment and e-commerce and the proliferation of more computing power and connectivity to more people and more places, continue unbated. It will take some awfully significant regulatory changes to alter that momentum.

Next week, we hear from Apple. Wall Street analysts expect Tuesday’s report will show that sales came in around $53.4 billion, unchanged from last year (when Apple’s revenue was still growing a healthy 17%). Falling iPhone sales should be offset by rising sales of services, wearables, and maybe iPads, according to the consensus view. But apple’s stock price has also risen a healthy 32% in 2019. Let’s see if Tim Cook & Co. can keep the party rolling.

Called it. The much-rumored sale of Intel’s flailing smartphone modem business to Apple for $1 billion is finally official. The two companies confirmed the transaction on Thursday, though Intel retains the right to use the modem tech in non-phone devices likes PCs and cars. Not-so-confirmed is the closing of T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint. The latest hang-up is the Justice Department apparently trying to convince the 14 state attorneys general that have sued to block the deal to back down. That led to the bizarre situation on Thursday of Minnesota AG Keith Ellison issuing a statement blasting the deal, then pulling the statement off his web site, then having his spokesman say “it wasn’t supposed to happen.” Stay tuned. The DOJ has scheduled a mystery press announcement for 11 a.m. ET on Friday.

Called it, II. Speaking of news events you probably anticipated, Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank Group closed the fundraising for its second massive tech investing fund, dubbed the Vision Fund 2, with $108 billion commitments from investors including Apple and Microsoft.

Called it, part three. Okay, I know those last two items were fairly predictable, but this one was an absolute lock. Remember at the height of bitcoin mania in late 2017 when small-cap stock Long Island Iced Tea Corp. changed its name to Long Blockchain, sending its share price up almost 300%? Now the FBI is investigating the company for possible insider trading and securities fraud, Quartz reports. Shocker.

John Oliver has joined the cast of Jon Favreau’s Lion King movie as Zazu.

Oliver is joining a voice cast that includes Donald Glover (Simba) and James Earl Jones (Mufasa), as well as Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner, who will voice Pumbaa and Timon, respectively.  

Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) wrote the script for the live-action adaptation, which is being produced by Favreau and Jeffrey Silver. 

Rowan Atkinson voiced the uptight hornbill in the original 1996 animated pic, who serves as a feathered political advisor to Simba and Mustafa. 

Oliver, who is best known as the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, has voiced Vanity Smurf in Sony’s The Smurfs and Smurfs 2. He is repped by WME and Avalon.

Lion King is set for a July 19, 2019, release date.

Oregon House Passes “Sanctuary State” Bill

As reported earlier in the week, the Oregon legislature is moving full-speed-ahead with an illegal alien protection bill that would make Oregon a “sanetuary state”. The local media, of course, lauds the bill with puff piece headlines of “Oregon lawmakers aim to boost protection of immigrants” and “Oregon House votes to expand privacy for undocumented immigrants.”

The bill, HB 3464, passed the House by a vote of 35-23, down party lines, with 2 Republicans excused for the day.

Oregonian For Immigration Reform head Cynthia Kendoll penned an op-ed in the Statesman Journal:

Today, the House of Representatives’ Democratic majority goes even further.  Gov. Kate Brown and Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum and 28 House Democrats have introduced House Bill 3464, to prohibit, “except as required by state or federal law,” Oregon’s “public bodies” — its various governments, its schools, and its law-enforcement agencies — from sharing with federal immigration authorities illegal immigrants’ addresses, contact information, workplaces, schools of attendance, and scheduled court appearances if such information was intended to be used “for the . . . enforcement of federal immigration laws.”

HB 3464 is harmful for several reasons: undermining the rule of law generally, and U.S. immigration law specifically, and by shielding criminal aliens from detection.

Meanwhile, Causa commented on their facebook page:

Great news! Today HB 3464 passed Oregon’s House, now on to the Senate! If passed, HB 3464 would protect the privacy of immigrant families by limiting the collection and sharing of information for the purpose of immigration enforcement. Thanks to Representatives Teresa Alonso and Diego Hernandez for leading the effort.

State Rep. Gret Barreto had this to say on myeasternoregon.com:

HB 3464 came about based on the Governor and other Democrat leaders’ desire to oppose federal immigration laws. As President Trump seeks to regain control over lax immigration policy, Oregon leaders have used it as an opportunity to bolster the liberal agenda by using appeals to emotion and fear about deportation in Oregon, effectively creating an environment where being in favor of immigration reform and enforcement is equated to bigotry and racial prejudice.

The mistruth of that narrative is sort of insignificant in the climate we live in here in Oregon. Daily we see emotionally driven narratives fly out of Democrat offices and they are spread as truth, and any argument against is considered uninformed or hateful. Unfortunately, these so called “truths” are often very effective calls to action.

During his long and controversial career, Sun Myung Moon used his cult-like UNIFICATION CHURCH to AMASS a HUGE fortune 💲💲for himself and his family.

Moon, who DIED earlier this month at the age of 92, was MORE than a charismatic cult leader. He also dabbled in international ESPIONAGE through his LINKS to the KCIA - KOREAN CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE Agency and it's COVERT activities in this country. Those links were the focus of an investigation conducted by Don FRASER during his final term as Minnesota's 5th District congressman in the LATE 1970s.

FRASER SPEARHEADED the INVESTIGATION as chair of a House International Affairs Subcommittee. His congressional PROBE brought to light a HUGE South KOREAN INFLUENCE-PEDDLING scheme AIMED at MANIPULATING U.S. POLICY-MAKING toward Korea.

The investigation IMPLICATED the MOONIES, as they were known, and unleashed a furious personal ASSAULT on Fraser BY MOON and his FOLLOWERS.

😠The assault included a $30 MILLION LAWSUIT, filed AGAINST the Fraser and his staff investigators, that was LATER DISMISSED.😠😠😠 CUZ IT WAS ALL TRUE !!

But  MOON’S AGENTS did MORE than file frivolous lawsuits. In 1978, they sent their followers into Minnesota to SABOTAGE the 5th District congressman’s 1978 CAMPAIGN for an open U.S. Senate seat.

There were even some DIRTY TRICKS in play when a SHADOWY INVESTIGATOR with TIES to the Moonies TRIED to EMBARRASS FRASER by claiming that he had inappropriately manipulated his congressional staff payroll.

And then there were rumors about a mysterious 🔥FIRE🔥at the Fraser’s D.C. home, just days after his narrow loss to Robert Short in the Senate primary election.

In his 1980 account of the Fraser Subcommittee investigation, “GIFTS of DECEIT,” Robert BOETTCHER wrote about the Moonies’ UNRELENTING EFFORTS to INTIMIDATE FRASER in an effort to THWART his Investigation. Boettcher, who served as the subcommittee’s staff director, reported that Fraser was the TARGET of a “nationwide PROPAGANDA BARRAGE.”

😠“LETTERS went out to THOUSANDS of lawyers, clergyman and politicians,” Boettcher recalled. “They even WENT AFTER Fraser’s WIFE and CHILDREN. His wife, Arvonne, was "described as Fanatical Left-wing Feminist whose job at the State Department put her in a conflict of interest with her husband in Congress. They tried to make something sinister out of Fraser’s daughter’s participation in an ANTI-Vietnam War demonstration at the University of Minnesota.”😠

While Fraser and Boettcher Never had direct dealings with Moon,  they did have extensive contacts with two of his key operatives: NEIL SALONEN, who headed  the Unification Church in the United States, and BO HI PAK,  who RAN a Washington, D.C. FRONT group for Moon known as the Freedom Leadership Foundation.

In “Gifts of Deceit,” Boettcher wrote about a dramatic CONFRONTATION between FRASER and PAK at an April 11, 1978, congressional hearing where PAK CALLED HIM “a tool of the DEVIL.”👿

“You have nailed Reverend Moon’s name and the Unification Church to a cross. You have Crucified us,”(EXPOSED US actually 😉) PAK SHOUTED out to FRASER at one point during the hearing.

“NONSTOP, he went on with the diatribe at accelerated speed. His voice became louder and louder,” Boettcher remembered. “He waved his arms vehemently. Near the breaking point, his voice trembled as he shouted with tears in his eyes: ‘You may get my scalp, Mr. Chairman, but never my heart and soul. My heart and soul belongs to God.”

Later that month, at another congressional hearing, PAK LASHED OUT AGAIN at FRASER, this time calling him “a traitor, a second Benedict Arnold, and an  enemy of this nation and of all free nations.”

“Fraser’s VOLUMES of INTERVIEWS, FINANCIAL 💲RECORDS💲and INTELLIGENCE reports were HIGHLY DAMAGING to MOON’S IMAGE. But he [Pak] must not allow Fraser to drag the Master into the hearing room as he had been. If necessary, he would be the sacrificial animal at Fraser’s pagan rite.”

“With SO MUCH EVIDENCE POINTING to Moon, however, Fraser reluctantly CONCLUDED THAT HE SHOULD BE QUESTIONED,” Boettcher noted.

When Moon’s attorney rebuffed Fraser’s effort to get the Unification Church leader to cooperate voluntarily with the House subcommittee, the Minnesota congressman prepared to issue a subpoena to COMPEL Moon to TESTIFY.

But JUST AS the SUBPOENA was ABOUT to be ISSUED, 😠MOON ABRUPTLY FLED the COUNTRY, flying to London UNDER a FALSE NAME.😠

Fraser saw his own congressional career cut short with his loss in the 1978 DFL Senate primary. With that loss, his subcommittee’s investigation of the Unification Church and its link to the Korean CIA also came to an end.

BACK in KOREA, MOON EXULTED IN FRASER’S DEFEAT, claiming that "God made Fraser lose the election because he defied the will of heaven." 😤

“AMERICAN MOONIES had been INDOCTRINATED to BELIEVE EVERYTHING that HAPPENED to Fraser, was INSTRUCTED by the FATHER. Now, the Father’s prophecy was being fulfilled. God’s enemy was being punished,” Boettcher observed with a note of irony.

Don FRASER LEFT WASHINGTON and came BACK to MINNEAPOLIS, where he was elected MAYOR in 1979, serving in that office for the next 13 YEARS.

In 1982, MOON was TRIED and CONVICTED of CONSPIRACY and of filing a 😠FALSE😠 Income TAX return. He was FINED $15,000 and spent 13 MONTHS in a FEDERAL PRISON in DANBURY CONN.😠

"Wellstone says he is following the work of Don Fraser, the former mayor of Minneapolis and long time Minnesota congressman."

Wellstone called him "a giant in the international community when it came to human rights questions" adding that his trip to Colombia "is very much."

The KCIA was using the Unification Church as a political tool in its various anti-communist activities. The KCIA's general goal was to influence the domestic and foreign politics and policies of the United States. Eighty-one pages of the 447-page Fraser Report (pages 311-392) deals specifically with the Moon organization. The term "KCIA" occurs sixty-eight times within those eighty-one pages."

Remembering Rev Moon's response to Fraser's defeat in 1978 SUBMITTED BY JACK LAVALLEY ON MARCH 28, 2015 - 12:15PM. In a talk to his followers in London on September 17, 1978, Rev. Moon said the following concerning Fraser's defeat on Sept 12 and I quote:

...Col. Pak called me from Washington and I said "'Bo Hi, what happened?" He shouted, "Aboji, Mansei." [Father, may you live for 10,000 years.] That was really a historical long-distance mansei. Then I said, "Bo Hi, cool it. Fraser is a poor man now. Don't be too excited but have mercy upon him and be nice to him." Mr. Pak was amazed....
