To pay off pension and gratuity arrears, Fubara approves N2 billion each month

Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, has declared that the state will set aside N2 billion each month to make up for the pension and gratuity arrears owed to retired public employees. The purpose of this action is to pay off the outstanding debt and guarantee that retired civil servants receive their gratuities and pensions in a timely manner. Fubara revealed that the payment has been increased from N1 billion to N2 billion per month in order to clear the backlog and guarantee that retired public officials receive their benefits on time at the 2024 Rivers State public Service Week in Port Harcourt. The governor promised that Rivers State will be among the first states to embrace the new minimum wage agreed by the federal government as soon as the implementation details are made public. The governor was represented by Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Secretary to the State Government. Fubara stated that he understood the vital role the civil service played in the growth of the state saying, “We recognise that the civil service is the institutional memory of the government. No government can stand without its support. You are the health professionals who care for our health, the teachers who train our children, judicial officers who ensure that there is justice, virtually every spectrum of life and governance, you are the people.” The governor outlined the measures his administration has taken to better the lot of public servants, such as approving the certification of ICT personnel in multiple digital certificates, hiring more medical physicians, and bringing back resident doctor training. Along with establishing the state health insurance program and appointing new permanent secretaries who would receive cars to improve their work, he also pledged to raise the standard of living for state employees. In addition to congratulating the government officials on their week, Victor Oko-Jumbo, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, urged dedication to creating a robust and diverse civil service. Opobo is a historical town in Rivers State, Nigeria, filled with rich culture, heritage, and a fascinating story. Founded in 1870 by the legendary King Jaja of Opobo, it emerged as a major trading hub during the era of the Atlantic slave trade and later became a center for palm oil trade.

King Jaja’s vision turned Opobo into a powerful city-state, controlling trade routes and flourishing as a maritime and economic force.

However in this modern age the people have suffered stagnancy for a long time due to the swampiness of their area and the absence of a good road network to ensure movement within and outside the region. However, times have changed, and development has come to the kingdom. The Opobo Ring Road project is part of the road infrastructural projects simultaneously going on in the state. The road project is a sign of rapid development, economic growth, and connectivity between other regions of the state and inversely to other states. The sand filling/land reform of 20 hectares of land was the first sign of this development. The aim is to eradicate the problem caused by the swampy nature of the area which negatively affects construction and connectivity. The project which extends more than 3km is a single carriageway with 3 bridge crossings, connecting it with other communities. The Opobo Ring Road project is set to improve transportation within the area. Movement of goods and people would no longer be a nightmare as there’ll be easy flexibility and it will save enough time for other businesses. This will ensure that people can migrate within and outside the state without experiencing the congestion of major areas in the city. Also, this will bring the unification and interaction of people within and outside the state through tourism, commerce, and industry toward economic prosperity.

The All Progressives Congress Campaign Coordinator in Ahoada-West Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chisom Lennard, has been found d€ad hours after he was abducted.   According to PUNCH, Lennard was kidnapped by the gunmen dressed in police uniform while voting for the governorship and state House of Assembly elections was ongoing at Ibagwa polling unit 2 ward 10 in Ahoada West LGA.   It was gathered that the APC chieftain tried to stop the gunmen from snatching election materials when he was whisked away in a commando fashion.
