9 Day Kilimanjaro Trekking , Northern Circuit
Tumblr media
Trekking Program Summary This is the most adventurous trekking program on Kilimanjaro which starting at the north traverses almost the entire mountain before reaching to the summit. It is absolutely the most scenic route available and has almost no traffic on its northern face. If you want something different, this is your route. Trekking Program Details by Day Day 1: Registration at the Londolosi Gate After completing the necessary registration formalities at Londorossi National Park gate, we drive through varied farmland with open views over the plains to reach the Lemosho roadhead. The last section of the road is of poor quality and difficult to drive after rain, sometimes we start walking a kilometre or two below the roadhead. We often have our lunch at the roadhead before starting to walk. It is an easy  day of walking up a small path through beautiful and lush forest. We camp at Lemosho Big Tree Camp (2,650 m); Day 2:  Traversing Through Shira Plateau (3,550 m). We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of  the Shira Plateau. There is a tangible sense of wilderness, especially if afternoon mists come in! We camp in the centre of the plateau at “Shira One” (3,550 m). Day 3: Trekking to the Summit of Shira Cathedral and Shira Hut (3,840 m) We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral before reaching the next camp at Shira Hut (3,840 m). This campsite has stunning views, close to the glaciated dome of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau. The views from here of Mt. Meru floating on the clouds are simply unforgettable. Day 4: Trekking to Lava Tower and Moir Hut (4,200m). In the morning we follow the main trail up to Lava Tower, and for those feeling strong there is a possibility to climb up to the ruined hut at Arrow Glacier around 4,800m. We then continue from Lava Tower to reach our campsite at Moir Hut (4,200m). Day 5:  Trekking to the summit of Little Lent hill at 4,375 , Buffalo Camp (4,150m) We climb out of the Moir Valley and take a short detour to reach the summit of Little Lent hill at 4,375 meters. After admiring the views we return to the trail and head eastwards around the northern circuit trail. Here the trail passes through a field of rock slabs that clink as they are walked on. The final section is to walk undulates until reaching the location of Buffalo Camp (4,150m). At the camp there is a huge feeling of space as the Kenyan plains stretch out far below to the north. Day 6: Traverse to Third Cave Camp (3,900m). From Buffalo Camp we climb up to the top of ‘Buffalo Ridge’ and drop down the other side to reach  Pofu, nearby the is a small spring and some vegetation. The trail continues eastwards through a landscape that has increasingly sparse vegetation to eventually reach Third Cave Camp (3,900m). Day 7:  Trek to School Hut Campsite (4,700m) and Rest There is a steady ascent to reach The Saddle, a lunar landscape between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. From here we continue upwards and reach School Hut Campsite (4,700m) in the early afternoon. The remain  of the afternoon is spent resting and preparing for the summit day. Day 8: Trekking to the Summit of Uhuru Peak (5,896 m) and descend to Millennium Camp (3,800 m). We will start our ascent by torchlight at about midnight so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Gilmans Point (5,685 m) in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. The trail leads west along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. We retrace our steps along the crater rim to Stella Point and then descend down through Barafu Camp to reach Millennium Camp (3,800 m). Day 9:  Continue Descending to Mweka Gate (1,650 m) (4-6 hours walking) A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to the National Park gate at Mweka (1,650 m) and on through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village. kilimanjaro climbs via Lemosho Route 9 Days
Tumblr media
Day1: Lemosho Big Tree Camp (2,650 m); 3-4 hours walking. After completing the neccessary registration formalities at Londorossi National Park gate, we drive through varied farmland with open views over the plains to reach the Lemosho roadhead. The last section of the road is of poor quality and difficult to drive after rain, sometimes we start walking a kilometre or two below the roadhead. We often have our lunch at the roadhead before starting to walk. It is an easy day of walking up a small path through beautiful and lush forest. We camp at Lemosho Big Tree Camp. Day2: Shira One” (3,550 m); 5-6 hours walking. We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. There is a tangible sense of wilderness, especially if afternoon mists come in! We camp in the centre of the plateau at “Shira One. Day3: Shira Hut (3,840 m); 3-5 hours walking. We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral before reaching the next camp at Shira Hut. This campsite has stunning views, close to the glaciated dome of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau. The views from here of Mt. Meru floating on the clouds are simply unforgettable. Day4: Moir Hut (4,200m); 3-4 hours walking. In the morning we cross part of the plateau heading north to reach our campsite at Moir Hut for hot lunch. After which there is an excellent acclimatization walk up onto the Lent Hills, the summit of which is at 4,700 metres. Day5: Great Barranco valley (3,900 m); 6-8 hours walking A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4,550 m) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below near our campsite at Barranco valley. Day6: Karanga campsite (4,000 m); 4-5 hours walking A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. The terrain changes to scree, with pockets of vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there is only a short distance to our camp at Karanga (4,000 m), the last water point on the way to the summit. Day7: Barafu campsite (4,600 m); 3-4 hours walking We follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach the Barafu campsite (4,600 m) for lunch. There is a short acclimatisation walk to the plateau at the bottom of the South-East valley (4,800 m). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night. Day8: Mweka forest camp (3100 m); 13-15 hours walking We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1 a.m. so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m), in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach our final Mweka forest camp. Day8: Mweka forest camp to Mweka Gate (1,650 m); 3-4 hours walking. A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to Mweka National Park gate. Kilimanjaro Climbing Includes: Full board accommodation in all the above mentioned camps and lodge in Arusha Private professional mountain guides All Park fees Rescue fees All meals while on the Mountain Arrival and Departure transfers Government taxes, VAT and all relating service charges Guides, Porters, cook salaries and park fees Emergency Oxygen Walking Poles Emergency Evacuation by Flying Doctor Excludes: Tanzania Visa: $50 per person on arrival Personal Expenses (e.g. laundry, telephone, beverages, etc.) Meals not listed above Optional Tours (short safari after your climb etc) Tips and any items of personal nature Read the full article
