Circumstances of Disappearance: Carolyn Denise Brown, Sheketah Michele Brown, Barry Michael Brown, and Brandon Mitchell Brown were last seen in their hometown of Port St. Lucie on July 16, 1985. The father of the family was named James Michael Brown. James and Carolyn were the parents of Barry and Brandon, but Sheketah was from a previous relationship of James. James and Carolyn were teachers in Fort Pierce, and had been married for ten years.
In the February of 1983, James had been fired because of an incident where he beat Sheketah (aged 9 at the time) with a belt for spending 10 cents of her lunch money on a pencil at school. School officials noted the welts and cuts from the injuries. James was arrested for aggravated child abuse. He got 3 years of probation and community service. His teaching license was also revoked for the three years of his probation. He subsequently found work as a 4-H counselor. James reportedly had mental health issues and was allegedly abusive towards Carolyn as well. It was reported she would often stay at their church with the children due to James’ temper.
In August, Carolyn’s mother contacted police after not hearing from the family since July 4th and she was concerned Brandon was not enrolled in preschool. When officials went to the house, they found rotting food out on the dining room table as if the family had been eating breakfast and there was fresh paint in the master bedroom, which was on top of blood splatter. Carolyn’s purse was located in a corner of the garage; inside it, every piece of her identification had been cut up. The family was officially listed as missing after the next school year began and neither Carolyn nor James reported to teach. Later James called Carolyn’s sister and told her she could have everything inside his home. Carolyn’s sister asked where the rest of the family was and James replied, “Out there.”
James then drove to Savannah, Georgia. He gave himself the false name of “Demetrius Jones” and a false date of birth to the police. He stated that someone had robbed him and shot him in the head. His true identity was discovered and that was when he admitted he had murdered his wife and children and tried to take his own life on July 18th.
James’ car was later located in Georgia.  He told police that on July 14th he shot Carolyn in the back and smothered 2 year old Brandon. He woke the other two kids up and took them to a park near their home and put Brandon’s body into the back of his car. He took the older children to a shopping center and sent them to get some candy. He disposed of Brandon’s body behind the shopping center. He moved Carolyn’s body to another bedroom, then took her body in his car and dumped it near Schumacher Buick in West Palm Beach. He stated that he took the older children and drove them out of state, then shot them along the side of the road near Brunswick, Georgia.
The areas he said he dumped the bodies yielded no results and the bodies were not located. He was put on trial for the murders of Carolyn and Brandon in Florida, but was not convicted. He was not charged in Georgia because they could not find the bodies. Some investigators believe James lied about where he disposed of the bodies.
Several court-appointed mental health professionals diagnosed James as a paranoid schizophrenic; he stated he heard voices and saw visions. He was committed to a Florida mental health facility after the court’s decision in 1985. He was moved to a halfway house in 1996 and released from the program in 1997. In 2005, however, he was imprisoned after he threatened to kill a bank clerk during a robbery.
Carolyn, Sheketah, Brandon and Barry have never been located.
