“Robert had a good understanding of court ceremonial, being both an exceptional horseman and showman, ‘tall, powerful, active and handsome’. With his natural panache, he dressed expensively, often spending £400 at a time on costly materials ordered in European markets. He was a convivial friend, loving good food and enjoying a wager on his sporting contests. His healthy appetite became a standing joke in court circles. Inevitably, he needed to delegate, but he was a ‘hands-on’ manager, particularly when he felt that his personal touch was called for.” ⎯ Elizabeth I's Secret Lover, Robert Stedall

By employing a network of his own agents, he provided information of crucial importance to Government. He built some of the finest houses and gardens of the age. As Master of the Horse, he developed English bloodstock to provide horses for Royal and military requirements. Book Review - 'Mary Queen of Scots' Secretary: William Maitland, Politician, Reformer, and Conspirator' by Robert Stedall
Book Review – ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ Secretary: William Maitland, Politician, Reformer, and Conspirator’ by Robert Stedall
Thank you to Pen and Sword for gifting me a copy of this book for review. I’m not very knowledgeable about Mary Queen of Scots’ early life in France and Scotland. I know more about the period after she fled to England in 1568. I hoped that this would fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge. William Maitland isn’t a person I had ever heard of before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect though…
