Joseph Cornell: Shadowplay…Eterniday

Every few years or so, someone publishes a new book on Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) to mark a new retrospective or anniversary, and I seemingly need to buy all of them. This one was published to celebrate the centennial of Cornell’s birth, and it’s very well done. With over 200 illustrations of Cornell’s work, many in detail, it’s an impressive volume. What’s different about this book are the various perspectives offered about Cornell and his work from the four essayists, and the DVD-ROM included with the book that includes a compendium of the art and source materials, commentary by scholars and critics, and access to his experimental films.

Paul J. "Little Billy" Jacobs with Ford Sterling in Mabel's Dramatic Career (1913)

This curly blond-haired kid, as "Little Billy," was the star in Keystone's kiddie comedies during 1913-14 in films like Little Billy's Triumph.

Born in Laclede, Idaho, Jacobs was the son of a doctor named Joseph Jacobs, who relocated from Idaho to Edendale shortly after Paul's berth. Paul was discovered one day by Henry Lehrman and brought to Keystone. When Lehrman left with Ford Sterling to create the Sterling Comedies for Universal, he took Jacobs and his director, Robert Thornby, with him. In 1915, Jacobs joined majestic for one-reelers, and also appeared L-KO comedies. He played in features such as The Clown, The Valiants of Virginia, The Primrose Ring and Little Orphan Annie. Jacobs later worked as a writer, including employment with movie magazines such as Wilfred Beaton's Film Spectator.

The Joey Jacobs who appears in 1916-17 Keystone-Triangles was Paul's cousin. Paul's order sister was a Los Angeles area stage actress under the name Miriam Jay. His father continued practicing medicine until shortly before his death at 94 in 1972, the doctor with the longest continuing practice in Los Angeles at the time.

The first celebrated reading of “Howl”, Part I only, at 6 Gallery, October 7, 1955, wasn’t taped,  so Prof. Tom Parkinson, member of Rexroth’s old Buddhist anarchist circle, organized another reading at Berkeley’s little Town Hall Theater festooned with Chinese ink brush orgy drawings by Robert LaVigne-- a couple hundred people crowded in, a mixture of artists from San Francisco, poetry aficionados, friends of Robert Duncan, ladies from the Potrero District, North Beach Bohemians, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Cassady, Ann charters, and an amazing group of poets on stage including Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Michael McClure, with Kenneth Rexroth as Master of Ceremonies. Five months after the 6 Gallery reading I’d finished Parts II and III of “Howl”. This added a huge dimension, extending the power of the poem into the Moloch section and beyond. And this was the first time I’d read “Howl” all the way through aloud, beginning to end, as well as “Sunflower Sutra”, “A Strange New Cottage In Berkeley” and “America,” further experiments with the long breath’d verse line.

Art History Week #4 : Assemblage.

This week we looked at how artists use assemblage of found or constructed objects to convey their message. We were given a list of suggested works to study and the one that stood out for me was this nostalgic piece by #JosephCornell ‘Untitled (Bebe Marie)’ Thought to have been created in the 1940′s, the piece comprises of a Victorian doll hidden behind some branches, all contained in a wooden box frame, and is thought to be a comment on lost childhood and the constraints he felt with his domestic responsibilities.

Whilst researching the piece however, I discovered another of Cornell’s works created in 1953 in honour of the American Poet Emily Dickinson entitled ‘Toward the Blue Peninsula’. Both pieces are enclosed in a box frame- symbolic of confinement (Cornell and Dickinson were known to be introverts who worked in their basements).

The ‘Toward the Blue Peninsula’  piece plays with shape, form and shadows, and includes elements of a cage and bars, ( thought to represent the Poet’s basement bedroom where she wrote her works) with a beautiful blue window implied outside of the box (thought to represent hope and optimism that the outside world could change.

This work was completed less than a decade after WW2, when America was in the grip of post-war industrialisation and standardisation. Cornell was heavily influenced by poetry in his works and It is claimed that it was inspired by this  Dickinson poem in particular:

Virginia Caroline Rappe (July 7, 1895 – September 9, 1921) was an American model and silent film actress. Rappe worked mostly in small bit parts and is best known for her death after attending a party with actor Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, who was accused of manslaughter in connection with her death, though ultimately exonerated.

Virginia Rappe was born in Chicago to an unwed mother, Mabel Rappe, who died when Virginia was 11. Virginia was then raised by her grandmother. At age 14, she began working as a commercial and art model.

In 1916, Rappe relocated to San Francisco to pursue her career as an artist's model, where she met dress designer Robert Moscovitz, to whom she became engaged. However, shortly after the engagement, Moscovitz was killed in a streetcar accident, whereupon Rappe moved to Los Angeles. In early 1917, she was hired by director Fred Balshofer and given a prominent role in his film Paradise Garden, opposite popular screen star Harold Lockwood. Balshofer then hired her again to costar with early drag performer Julian Eltinge and newcomer Rudolph Valentino in Over the Rhine, for which she was awarded the title of "Best Dressed Girl in Pictures". This film was not released until 1920, when Balshofer recut it and released it under the title An Adventuress, and later in 1922, after Rappe's death, as The Isle of Love.

In 1919, Rappe began a relationship with director/producer Henry Lehrman. The two eventually became engaged and lived together, although in the United States Census of 1920, the young actress is listed simply as a "Boarder" in Lehrman's home in Los Angeles. Rappe appeared in at least four films for Lehrman: His Musical Sneeze, A Twilight Baby, Punch of the Irish and A Game Lady. However, since many of Lehrman's films are lost, the exact number of roles she performed for him cannot be determined.

Following Rappe's death, rumors arose, supposedly to besmirch her character, that she had given birth to a child in Chicago in 1918 and that the child was given to foster care. These rumors were proven false by autopsy.

The circumstances of Rappe's death in 1921 became a Hollywood scandal and were covered widely (and sensationalized) by the media of the time. During a party held on Labor Day, September 5, 1921, in Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle's suite at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, Rappe allegedly suffered a trauma. She died four days later on September 9 from a ruptured bladder and secondary peritonitis. She was buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

The exact events of that party are still unclear, with witnesses relating numerous versions of what happened. It was alleged that Rappe had died as a result of a violent sexual assault by Arbuckle. Arbuckle's accuser, Bambina Maude Delmont, had accompanied Rappe to the party; she had first met Rappe only a few days earlier. Delmont had a police record for extortion, prostitution and blackmail. Subsequent witnesses testified that Rappe had for some time suffered from cystitis, a condition which could have been aggravated by consuming alcohol. Witnesses also testified that Rappe had previously suffered from venereal disease, so there were allegations that her death was brought on by her health rather than by an assault.

After three manslaughter trials, Arbuckle was formally acquitted; his acquittal in the third trial was accompanied by an unprecedented statement of apology from the jury stating, in part, that, "Acquittal is not enough for Roscoe Arbuckle. We feel that a great injustice has been done him… there was not the slightest proof adduced to connect him in any way with the commission of a crime." Nevertheless, Arbuckle's reputation and career were ruined because of the scandal.

The case has been examined by scholars and historians over the years and is still speculated about today, and a number of detailed books about the case have analyzed the incident and subsequent trials.

The Daughters of Ghostwood Plantation Lewis Barrett Lehrman

  Ghostwood Plantation has been on my mind for a long time now. The classic plantation houses of the Old South have always attracted me, as tangible ghosts of a long dead era. Many of them still stand, of course, and some are still occupied by the living. Others are haunted by their histories, their tragic destinies, and their lonely and neglected existence... not to mention the spirits of that bygone era.

"Few living souls dare tempt the spirits of Ghostwood Plantation, where ancient oaks stand guard over its once-proud manor house.  On nights when the shrouded moon floats low and full, a vagrant breeze carries perfume of earth and damp leaves, with just a hint of magnolia, whispering forgotten secrets through swaying curtains of Spanish moss.

"In high-ceilinged chambers and moldering shacks that once knew pride, misery, passion, pain, the moon spills silent silver through gaping windows, upon memory-strewn floors, and only the ghostly daughters of Ghostwood Plantation remain to recount their silent stories in the indigo shadows.

"Hush!  Wait! Is that merely the mournful call of a distant loon?"

Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) could not draw, paint, or sculpt, and yet is considered one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century. From the late 1920s until his death in 1972, Cornell roamed the streets of New York City—a city he would never venture far from—scouring its used bookstores, flea markets, and junk shops. “My work was a natural outcome of my love for the city,” he said. One day in 1931 he saw some compasses in one shop window and some boxes in the next, and it occurred to him to put them together. The range of found items in his L’Égypte de Mlle Cléo de Mérode cours élémentaire d’histoire naturelle, constructed in 1940, includes the following: Doll’s forearm, loose red sand, wood ball, German coin, several glass and mirror fragments, 12 cork-stopped bottles, cutout sphinx head, yellow filaments, 2 intertwined paper spirals, cut-out of Cléo de Mérode’s head, cutout of camels and men, loose yellow sand, 6 pearl beads, glass tube with residue of dried green liquid, crumpled tulle, rhinestones, pearl beads, sequins, metal chain, metal and glass fragments, threaded needle, red wood disc, bone and frosted glass fragments, blue celluloid, clear glass crystals, rock specimen, 7 balls, plastic rose petals, three miniature tin spoons for a doll house. Robert Wilson/Philip Glass: Einstein on the Beach

Reuniting the score and designs from Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's Einstein on the Beach, this exhibition focuses on the opera's premiere performances in 1976. Visitors enter a gallery awash in blue light where they encounter Glass's entire never-before-displayed autograph manuscript as well as Wilson's storyboard, thirteen leaves encompassing 113 scene designs. Footage from the New York rehearsal and 1976 productions in Paris and Brussels runs continuously in the gallery. The documentary Einstein on the Beach: The Changing Image of Opera, about the 1984 production at BAM, is screened in the Morgan's Gilder Lehrman Hall throughout the exhibition.
