I saw MARC COPLAND in early May with Adam Niewood and was disappointed. Despite anticipation and expectations based on Copland’s previous sophisticated work with Gary Peacock and John Abercrombie, he was down in the mix and rather passive. Fortunately, this set was much better. He and Robin Verheyen seem to have been writing and rehearsing together and Verheyen is himself a subtle player who also lets the music breathe. John Hebert especially and Anthony Pinciotti caught on very quickly and added flavors and layers.

The opener was the saxophonist’s for which he played soprano rising out of a sonic bed that Copland wove and Hebert embellished. The soprano danced over all that so there was an overall lilt and plenty of space for Copland to build a patient and moody solo. His own Spinning (?) was next gave the two of them lots to talk about together and then Copland a very strong solo. The following standard was a high point as of course they would take full advantage of the relaxed pace and quiet. I had lots of guesses for the next tune settling on Solar as my best guess. Copland and Hebert hooked up for a double time half chorus that showed that they can cook. In Walked Bud was the closer and Monk is always a fine idea before a quick outro of The Theme.

I want to like what Marc Copland is doing and this gig keeps that promise alive.

Met de wereldpremière van A Child of Books start op 13 juli in de Grote of St.-Bavokerkde 55e editie van het Internationaal Orgelfestival in Haarlem. A Child of Books is een nieuw werk van de componist Bart Verheyen op libretto van Winny Ang en wordt op de premièreavond uitgevoerd door organist en winnaar Nederlandse Muziekprijs 2024, Laurens de Man. Drie koren werken mee aan de première: het Nationaal Kinderkoor, het Nationaal Gemengd Jeugdkoor en een speciaal samengesteld koor van Haarlemse basisschoolkinderen.  A Child of Books Naast A Child of Books presenteert het Internationaal Orgelfestival onder andere op 18 juli de wereldpremière van Klee droomt Bach van Leo van Doeselaar en Marcel Wierckx en een optreden op 25 juli van de wereldvermaarde Oliver Latry. In totaal zijn er tijdens het orgelfestival meer dan 30 concerten te bezoeken op meer dan 10 Haarlemse locaties. Nieuw talent tijdens Improvisatieconcours Onlosmakelijk verbonden met Internationaal Orgelfestival is het Improvisatieconcours dat zich ook in de festivalperiode afspeelt. Vanaf 1951 is het concours met de finale op het Christian Müller-orgel in de Grote of St.-Bavokerk uitgegroeid tot het belangrijkste orgelconcours ter wereld. Zoals veel jonge organisten inmiddels hebben ervaren is het winnen van 'Haarlem' een belangrijke springplank tot een internationale carrière. Finales en voorrondes zijn ook voor het publiek toegankelijk.  Twee wereldpremières en een Frans idool Laurens de Man voert op zaterdag 13 juli in de Grote of St.-Bavokerk op het beroemde Christian Müller-orgel A Child of Books uit van de Belgische componist Bart Verheyen. Deze wereldpremière voor orgel en drie koren is een bewerking van het gelijknamige kinderboek geschreven door Oliver Jeffers en Sam Winston en vertelt het inspirerende verhaal van kinderen die door het lezen de fantastische wereld van verbeelding leren kennen. De koren staan onder leiding van László Nemes.  Op donderdag 18 juli is in de Grote of St.-Bavokerk de wereldpremière vanzKlee droomt Bach van en met organist Leo van Doeselaar en de audiovisuele componist en kunstenaar Marcel Wierckx. Dit nieuwe werk is geïnspireerd door de liefde van de Duitse schilder Paul Klee voor het werk van Johann SebastianBach.  Organist Olivier Latry is te gast op donderdag 25 juli. Hij is op dit moment één van de meest gevraagde organisten ter wereld, Latry is de vaste bespeler van het majestueuze orgel in de Notre-Dame van Parijs dat na de brand sinds april dit jaar weer bespeelbaar is. Latry geeft in Haarlem een uniek solo 'celebrity recital' op het Christian Müller-orgel in de Grote of St.-Bavokerk. Voortrekkersrol Het Internationaal Orgelfestival is internationaal gekend door hun voortrekkersrol binnen dit klassieke genre. De organisten spelen tijdens het festival vaak in combinatie met musici op andere instrumenten. Het festival zoekt continu naar de reikwijdte van de orgelmuziek en heeft zich genesteld in diverse muziekgenres zoals jazzmuziek en modern klassiek. De 55e editie van het festival ontvangt onder andere Jean-Baptiste Robin, Monica Melcová, Guus Janssen, Berry van Berkum, Zsigmond Szathmáry, Anikó Szathmáry, Roman Summereder, Peter Planyavsky, Shin-Young Lee, Bernard Foccroulle en Wolfgang Zerer. Op zondag 21 juli is er een openbaar toegankelijk symposium dat geheel in het teken staat van de in 1979 overleden Oostenrijkse organist, componist en dirigent Anton Heiller. Een zeer invloedrijk musicus die belangrijk is geweest voor de ontwikkeling van de orgelmuziek.  Haarlem centrum van orgelcultuur Haarlem kent heel lange een rijke orgelcultuur. Tijdens het festival zijn diverse Haarlemse locaties en hun orgels te bezoeken die laten horen hoe divers de orgels klinken. De Waalse kerk, Doopsgezinde kerk en Josephkerk bijvoorbeeld hebben orgels die allen anders van toon zijn en daardoor een eigen muzikaal karakter hebben. Het monumentale Christian Müller-orgel in de Grote of St.-Bavokerk is het muzikale centrum van het festival.

Het Internationaal Orgelfestival maakt tijdens het festival ook twee muzikale uitstapjes naar orgels in andere steden zoals naar Gouda, Rotterdam, Den Haag en de Grote Sint-Laurenskerk in Alkmaar. Internationale Zomeracademie Het Internationaal Orgelfestival opent in de festivalperiode traditiegetrouw de deuren van het Internationale Zomeracademie. Een academie voor 90 jonge, professionele organisten vanuit de hele wereld die gedurende het festival lessen, workshops en masterclasses volgen van gerenommeerde musici. Heel Haarlem Orgelt Op 13 juli is overdag de traditionele gratis toegankelijke Haarlemse orgeldag. Op 7 locaties zijn op diverse tijdstippen orgelconcerten te bezoeken. De dag start in de PHIL met een miniconcert op het Cavaillé-Coll-orgel en eindigt met orgelconcert van stadsorganist Anton Pauw op het Christian Müller-orgel in de Grote of St.-Bavokerk. TaxiWars - Artificial Horizon - here’s how they mash up jazz and hip hop in Belgium; not bad!

TaxiWars is back after a three-year hiatus with new album ‘Artificial Horizon’, released 6th September via Sdban Ultra. An intensive collaboration between dEUS frontman Tom Barman, saxophonist Robin Verheyen, bassist Nicolas Thys and drummer Antoine Pierre, TaxiWars are a mix of lyricism, poetry and jazz with a rock sensibility.

Three years in the making, ‘Artificial Horizon’, is a metaphorical step forward from 2016’s critically acclaimed album ‘Fever’. Reinventing themselves, Barman and Verheyen came up with something very fresh and personal, tastefully evolving from a cubistic jazz sound to a more melodious direction. The band took their music to the next level adding depth to their compositions, clarity to the beats and efficiency to their overall sound.

UK magazine Jazzwise has described Belgian sextet The Wrong Object as “adept at mixing Canterbury styled prog rock with Zappa-esque jazz fusion and Frippertronics to produce a beat that has elements of the past and the future thundering through it. [Their music] cleverly fuses all of these various musical elements together, expertly twisting various world music styles into the mix to produce a varied and unpredictable set of original material.”  With their new release, Into The Herd (Off/MoonJune) , The Wrong Object make a return to center stage, with a studio album of original compositions showcasing a variety of fresh, powerful material. After 15 years of an existence marked by extensive touring, recording and numerous collaborations with international jazz and rock luminaries (Elton Dean, Harry Beckett, Annie Whitehead, Alex Maguire, Stanley Jason Zappa, Ed Mann, Robin Verheyen), The Wrong Object ventures further into hybrid musical territories, pushing the boundaries of progressive jazz, rock and contemporary music. Perhaps the influence of the late Frank Zappa has never been more apparent. The songs continually weave, duck, dart, and ‘stop on a dime’; while exhibiting the “controlled reckless abandon” and a similar zany, humorous approach to both harmony and melodic/thematic motifs, akin to that which characterized his work. Rocker Tom Barman kaapte de sax van jazzman Robin Verheyen om een plaat te maken. Maar noem ‘TaxiWars’ vooral geen ‘jazzrock’, of erger nog: ‘fusion’. 

Niet te verwarren met dit soort ongein, dus: 

Nee, ‘Taxiwars’ is jazz. Maar dan puntig en snedig en doorspekt met het freewheelende parlando van Barman. Wat een plaat. Ik weet hoe de soundtrack van mijn zomer zal klinken! De plaat is nu te koop en de concertdata vindt u hier.
