Illustrated Appetites~Rokuhodo is full of SNACKS, and the food looks good too
“So this cafe makes their living off having attractive men”, one character comments after witnessing the horrendous latte art at Rokuhoudo. Yet when she tastes the coffee she finds a surprising taste that’s pleasant and comforting, and she finds herself spending all day there, getting drawn into the atmosphere and attractions of the cafe. Rokuhoudo is good at that kind of thing. It’s a show that disarms you with attractive men and good looking food, then serves up something sweet and heartwarming, revealing a little more about each character with every episode.
There’s an almost dating-sim like collection of good looking archetypes that run Rokuhoudo. Each present close to an archetype, then reveal backstories and passions that only endear you to them more.
Sui, the intelligent glasses wearing one who runs the cafe, is normally reserved, until any cat enters his vision. And while he can make great tea, he’s a disaster in the kitchen. Tokitaka, the old fashioned pretty boy is great around the house, can cook, garden and teaches old people how to make pottery. But despite his talents he spent a long time looking for new ways to feel fulfilled. Tsubaki, the redhead patisserie is aggressively competent, but he’s shy and quiet around others, until you get him in the room with Gure.
Speaking of, Gure is by far my favorite, channeling big himbo energy--a bombastic, physical man whose mere presence seems to make the room louder. Of course, he’s got a heart of gold, bringing smiles to everyone around him.
Each of these characters have distinct motivations and backstories, but they’re all united by a desire to bring happiness to the people around them. They have good chemistry and through the bits we get to see of them in the shop you can sense their passion for the cafe they run. The appeal of each dish is not only how good each of them look, but the feelings and care put into them.
It’s easy to describe Rokuhoudo, both the fictional shop and the anime itself, as broadly nostalgic, but nostalgia on its own can sometimes come off as backwards looking. Rokuhoudo instead feels like a place that you can escape from the rapid pace of the modern world. A quiet place where time ticks on slower. It’s a simple comfort, but one that’s welcome and suited for a modern world. If you’re looking for something short, funny, and kind, come sit down for an episode of Rokuhoudo. You’ll surely leave satisfied.

Thoughts on episode 7 of Rokuhoudo Yotsuiro Biyori nothing that intersting
- I was enjoying the slow nice pace of this SoL, but now they added angst I didn’t know that this series needed and it makes me happy.
- I want to know more about Tokitaka’s backstory and wow he was quick to help Sui out with opening the Teahouse, a pretty sunset indeed.
- You can’t tell me that Gure and Tsubaki aren’t flirting...or maybe Gure is flirting with Tsubaki. Something is going on there, Tsubaki always being low-key flustered is kind of cute. I want to know how those two met.
- I’m convinced that Yakyou really wanted to be with his brother with the Teahouse, but something stopped him, probably their father’s expectations or something, and it’s sad and like Tokitaka said, I hope they get to reconcile because those brothers love each other.
- I’m curious as to their ages. I’m pretty sure that Sui and Tokitaka are much older than Gure and Tsubaki but I want to know by how much.
- This series is just so good. It’s refreshing to watch a series about likeable characters doing things that they love and just having great fun interactions.
Anyone else watching this? What do you think about it?
