French Open: Zverev Reaches Fourth Straight SF, Faces Ruud Next

German Alexander Zverev: Fourth-seed German Alexander Zverev defeated No.11 seed Australian Alex de Minaur to book his spot in the French Open semifinals for the fourth consecutive year. The German, who played back-to-back five-set matches on Court Philippe-Chatrier in the third and fourth rounds that totalled a combined eight-plus hours, registered a 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-4 win in Wednesday night’s last men’s singles quarterfinal. Zverev, who is chasing his first major title, rallied past Tallon Griekspoor and Holger Rune in five sets earlier this week, while he also overcame 14-time record champion Rafael Nadal in the first round and former World No. 7 David Goffin in the second round. "I have a mindset that you have to work harder than anyone else to be the best player. I think the best players are all doing that. "I like to work to my absolute limit, and if I do that, then playing five sets, all of a sudden, is not that difficult. I’ve been doing that over many, many years now, and I’m happy it’s paying off, still paying off. I’m happy to be in another semi-final, and hopefully, I can win one," Zverev said after the win. The German squandered a break advantage in the first set to take the opener. He then rallied from a 3/5 deficit in the second-set tie-break to take full command. Zverev then produced front-foot tennis in the third set and recovered from a late wobble when he failed to serve out the match at 5-3, breaking De Minaur in the next game to advance after two hours and 59 minutes. De Minaur, who upset World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round, was competing in his first Roland Garros quarterfinal and second at a major. Zverev is the 11th man in the Open era to reach at least four consecutive semi-finals at Roland-Garros. By reaching his eighth Grand Slam semi-final, he and Daniil Medvedev now share the ATP tour lead for the most Grand Slam semifinal appearances among players born in 1990 or later, according to Roland Garros website. ✅️ Alexander won his first match at Roland Garros against Nadal 6-3 7-6 6-3

I'm happy to say that Sascha got off to a very strong start in his tough and very poignant opening round. He had the worst possible R1 opponent in Rafa, this match-up worsened by the fact that the last time they played each other was on this court, when Sascha sustained his horrific injury. But Alexander brought a phenomenal level of tennis to this match to win it in straight sets.

In the first set, Sascha started strong, obtaining triple break point in Nadal's opening game, and when he hit the net, Sascha broke for 1-0 and held for 2-0. Later at 2-1, Sascha faced two break points, but he held his nerve to hold for 3-1. Both then held until Nadal's serve at 3-5, when Sascha had and lost two break points which were also set points. A stunning drop shot return gave Sascha a third chance, and when Nadal struck the net, Sascha took the set 6-3.

The second set was tighter, with both holding for 1-1. At 2-1, Nadal saved two break points to hold for 2-2. Sadly, an unfortunate next game saw Sascha get broken, and Nadal held for 4-2. When on serve for the set later at 5-4, Alexander broke back and held for 6-5. The set went to a tie-break, in which Sascha displayed amazing skill to win it 7-5.

In the third set, after missing chances to break Nadal's first game, Sascha was broken for 0-2. But he struck back beautifully, breaking back and holding for 2-2. A few chances to break Nadal's next game came and went, before Sascha held for 3-3. He then pounced on the next game, striking a backhand return winner to break for 4-3. He then saved two break points in his next game to hold for 5-3. And he only raised his level further, and when Nadal hit a shot long, Sascha secured a second break to seal the victory 6-3 7-6 6-3.

It was an incredible, high-level match, and Sascha's level was amazing. It was sad because of Rafa's situation, but also poetic for Sascha to lay to rest their unfinished match from 2022. Hopefully he can rest well now before his next match, where he will face Goffin. Let's go, Alexander 🔥

On a different note, despite the rain, I need to watch the Iga v Osaka match again when I'm not hiding behind my cross stitch, too nervous to focus on the screen for fear of the result.

And Iga is utterly right about the crowd, they need to shut up and show some respect.
