I’ve watched many many cdramas but has there ever been such a nest of snakes as the imperial family in the Shu Kingdom of The Glamorous Imperial Concubine?

These two are so outclassed! Never mind Disney Princess, Ma Fuya, even the so called scheming first prince Meng Qiyou doesn’t fully understand how little his parents give a damn about him.

His mother, the Empress, hates him and resents him because he was taken away as a baby and given to another consort to raise.

But towards the younger son she loves and her doted on niece, we also see her continually screw over for her own goals.

Then there’s the emperor who sets up Meng Qiyou against the empress (his mother) so his favourite son, the second prince, can sit on the throne. He does this by playing on his emotions as a father. These people are SCUM

The most humane of these major players is Han Zhouyi, the scheming concubine, who doesn’t technically have any skin the game since she has no children and poisons our heroines mother…ok she’s awful too but she admits she’s no match for the empress who can continually screw over her own child.

I was disappointed in the first few episodes that Liu Liancheng (Wallace Huo) wasn’t the male lead but Yan Kuan as Meng Qiyou has really grown on me! We haven’t even seen the former in like ten episodes and I’m still hooked.

finding myself looking back on the Taiwanese drama Light the Night (2021) where i pretty much fell in love with Ruby Lin’s hair and her character’s entire wardrobe? this was such a gripping whodunnit and her character Lo Yu-nung a.k.a. Rose was so fascinating.

and it didn’t hurt that everyone looked so good on that show? like i honestly didn’t expect the whole thing to look that good.

i watched Ruby’s episode in At the Moment (2023) and i didn’t know how much i needed besotted closeted lesbian Ruby Lin in my life but there you have it. i hope someone makes a gifset of that episode. it was too adorable even with a dead guy hovering over the whole thing. Also #DonutHugs …? 😅

aside from ruby and james, lin is probably my favorite person in the whole series. ruby is so lucky to have her. she’s an amazing friend: she stands up for her when others talk about her behind her back, she recognizes that she wasn’t always a nice person to be around before her father lost his job—with all of ruby’s accomplishments and mishaps, she’s nothing but supportive. i love her. it’s just her and her carrots against the world.

Alistair meant what he said to James. He wanted to sit at the far back of the large room and sleep off his hangover, maybe even try and forget his heartbreak at the memory of Kesh smiling while he flirted with Camille the night before. That was the plan anyway. But then James decided this was the day he had to go and be an asshole and make it everyone's problem.

So here Alistair was trying to mind his own business, and James had to go and poke the bear.

The bear being Ruby.
