I've read up some neogaf posts by Jex & NotLiquid where they spoke about the characteristics of Satsuki and Ryuko. Which the former being one-note & unchallenged and the latter being inconsistency in her arc. This is all because the "Kiryuin-Matio connection" & hidden aganeda" reveals in episode 18. With Satsuki from the beginning to end her character almost never changed besides the fact that being like her mom wasnt the right way. (1/?)

We didnt know much on her personality or motivation before-hand & she was largely ambivalent and the when its revealed her reign was a ruse any change of development was undermined since rather than being shown her develop we're instead told that she was a complex character. With Ryuko, how she reacted & treated others after its revealed 'shes a LF hybrid' TURNED ALOT of people off which is understandable, (2/?) because episode 5-17 have her defending Senketsu being more than just what he's designed to be & being one of his best friends only to called the both monsters and break his heart just soured that development. Ya can argue its because Ragyo provoked her but that's the problem with her arc for most ppl. She doesn't really make decisions that are her own nor do her flaws like temper or be distant to people improvement. In almost every corner she is manipulated by someone, (3/?) and as a result constantly falls into these annoying cycles and frustrating contradictions.(her 'losing her way' is played as a gag if anything). Ya did some analysis on both characters before, so wat wld u say to this?(4/4)

For Satsuki, understanding that she shouldn't be like her mother is a big change, in my opinion. I also think we definitely see her develop.

For Ryuko, I disagree very heavily with the notion that she just keeps making the same mistakes without learning. She gets Band-Aid solutions prior to Episode 20, and after Episode 20, she's finally able to tackle her real insecurities. It's a buildup. Some of these posts are quite old, but:

ALSO, I have been wondering about the Story behind these bath figures for Ryuko and Satsuki, and the upcoming re-release with Extra Water Drops does include a blurb about what the heck is going on (at least on Right Stuf, anyway):

At the beginning of Kill La Kill, Ryuko Matio and Satsuki Kiryuin are sworn enemies. But as they uncover their own histories, they eventually become allies to take on Satsuki's mother, Ragyo. They're now captured in a quiet moment between battles, tidying up before the next threat rises.

This figure set features the two blade-wielding women after a stop at the local hot spring for a bath. Ryuko is still on her knees after climbing out, with her small towel only doing part of the job of covering up, though Senketsu tries to jump in to help out. Satsuki, meanwhile, is standing, and while she doesn't have clothes on hand, her hair is doing a good job of covering most of her body. Both of them are covered with beads of water, but have their weapons at the ready should someone get the jump on them.

Get clean and ready for action with the help of Ryuko and Satsuki!

I dunno how “canon” any of this is, but I’m still glad to read that Senketsu is there because he wants to cover Ryuko and prevent any creeps from peeping on her. (And from the description on the Ryuko/Senketsu figure alone, he also wants to Synchronize with her so they can take out the creeps together.)
