Isabel prepared her delicious chicken soup for dinner. Her children always said her chicken soup could cure all ailments, and that it was good for the soul. “Yes, this will do them good”, she thought as she cooked.
When supper was ready they came and sat down to eat, but there was no sign of Magdalena, which disheartened Francisco. “Give her some time,” Isabel said to him.
Moments later, Magdalena walked in and Francisco’s eyes lit up and he immediately went to her side. “I’m so glad you decided to join us,” he said as he embraced her. They sat down to eat, and Francisco glanced over at his Mamá and mouthed the words, “Thank you.” Isabel just smiled.
Little Andrés was so happy to have his mommy back.

Antonio and Isabel made it back safely from Spain. They were saddened once they learned about their grandchild. “I am so sorry Mijo,” Isabel said as she hugged her son tightly. “How are you and Magdalena holding up?” she asked. “I’m doing alright—it is Magdalena that worries me. She has not left the room for days, and she barely eats or even notices Andrés…I’m at a loss here, I don't know what to do,” he said. “The death of a child is never easy, especially for a mother. I'll talk to her.” Isabel said.
Isabel went to see Magdalena. She knocked gently on their bedroom door but there was no answer. Isabel gently opened the door and stepped into the dark bedroom. Magdalena was still laying in bed, hair disheveled and eyes red and swollen from crying. Isabel sat by the bed.
Isabel (softly): “May I speak with you?”
There was still no answer from Magdalena.
Isabel: “I’m sorry about what happened to your child my dear…there’s no greater loss than that of a child. I know it all too well.”
Magdalena: “How did you do it…how did you cope after the loss of your sons?”
Isabel: “It never leaves you. You will never forget about your lost child, but you will learn to live with it, and with time you will find joy again. You and Francisco are still young and I'm sure more children will come. I know it’s not easy, but you must find the strength to face it, because you still have a son out there who needs his mamá.”
Upon hearing this Magdalena began to cry again.
Magdalena: “I’ve been a terrible mother to him…I haven’t seen him in days.”
Isabel: “It’s okay my dear. What matters now is what you do going forward. He’s young and right now all he wants is his mamá.”
Magdalena (warmly): “Thank you, Isabel.”
Isabel: “I’m going to prepare supper. I hope you will join us?”
Magdalena nodded., but made no promise.

Magdalena awoke in the middle of the night in excruciating pain.
Magdalena: “Francisco, go get Julia, this baby is coming!”
Francisco runs out of the house to fetch the midwife, and on his way out, he wakes up Andrea and tells her what is happening.
Francisco: “Please stay with her until I return.”
Andrea: “Of course, don’t worry, go, I will stay with her.”
Magdalena was in much more pain than her first delivery, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong.
Andrea: “Let's walk for a bit, Mamá says that helps ease the process.”
She goes to help Magdalena get out of bed and notices that she is drenched in blood, and Magdalena begins to cry out in pain.
Magdalena: “Something's not right, something’s not right!”
Andrea is horrified and scared, but she tries her best to reassure Magdalena and hopes that Francisco arrives quickly with the midwife.
Julia finally arrived and she swiftly took action to help Magdalena. She urged Francisco to wait outside, but he refused to leave Magdalena’s side. “You do what you have to, I am not going anywhere” he said to her.
After hours of intense labor. Magdalena gave birth to a baby boy.
Magdalena (panicking): “He’s not crying, why is he not crying?''
Laura (sorrowfully): “I am so sorry…the child is dead.”
Magdalena: “No…No! No! This cannot be!!”
Magdalena was beside herself with grief at the loss of her child. A devastated Francisco did the best he could to hold it together for his wife. He held her tightly as she sobbed in his arms.
Exhausted from a difficult birth and from crying all night, Magdalena finally fell asleep. Francisco came out to check on Andrés Rogelio when Andrea approached him.
Andrea: “He’s sound asleep, let’s get you out of those bloody clothes.”
Francisco just nodded and walked out into the cool morning air. Andrea followed him out and sat next to him.
Andrea: “I am so sorry brother, you have my ear if you need it.”
Francisco couldn’t hold it together any longer, and he broke down in his sister’s arms and cried his heart out. Andrea held on to him and tried to comfort him.

Francisco: “What am I going to tell papa when he returns. He left me in charge and…”
Magdalena: “What happened is not your fault, any fool could see those two are crazy about each other. Quite frankly I’m surprised they waited this long.”
Francisco: “Magdalena!”
Magdalena: “She is not the first or the last one to have relations before marriage Francisco.”
Francisco (starting to head out the door): “Marriage…yes, they shall be married at once! I will go and speak with Diego—he needs to answer for what he’s done and do the honorable thing.”
Magdalena: “Shouldn't you speak to your sister first?”
Magdalena calls out to him, but he is gone. To which she exclaims, “Men!”
Andrea enters the living area.
Andrea (sardonically): “Where is he off to in such a hurry? Going to berate someone else?”
Magdalena: “I know your brother spoke to you harshly, but he was only defending your honor.”
Andrea: “He was cruel…I never thought he was capable of speaking to me that way.”
Magdalena: “Perhaps, but you are his little sister Andrea, and it’s his duty to look after you. You must understand that.”
Andrea only nods. Deep down she knows Magdalena makes sense, but she is not ready to accept it yet. Nor does she feel sorry for what happened with Carabi. What transpired between them was born out of love, how could that be wrong?
Magdalena: (Yawning) “Well if you’ll excuse me, I am going to lie down.”
Andrea: “Of course, get some rest. Don't worry about Andrés, I’ll care for him when he wakes.”
Magdalena thanks Andrea and heads to bed. This pregnancy seems to be taking a toll on her.

The time has come for Antonio and Isabel to return home.
María Isabel: “I wish you could stay a little longer...having you both here has been a great comfort.”
Isabel: “I wish we had more time too Mija, these past couple of months have been wonderful.”
Antonio: “Our belongings are on the ship mi amor, it’s time to board.”
Isabel: “Very well then.”
A tearful Isabel hugs her daughter and grandkids farewell.
Sofia: “Abuelo, up, up!”
Antonio: “Come here mi Niña. I am going to miss you so much, you be good for you Mamá, okay?”
Sofia says yes and holds on to her Abuelo tightly. Just then, Alejandro Martín joins them and Antonio had one last roughhousing session with his grandkids.
Antonio: “Martín, you be good boy and take care of your sister and Mamá, alright? You’re going to be the man of the house one day.”
Alejandro Martín nodded and hugged Antonio one last time.
Antonio: “You must come and visit us soon. I know Francisco and Andrea miss you dearly, and they would love nothing more than to meet their nephew and see how much Sofia’s grown.”
Alejandro: ''We will visit as soon as we can.”
Antonio (warmly smiling): “Good.”
As he hugs María Isabel goodbye, Antonio whispers in her ear, “I love you Mija, and I am very proud of the woman you have become.” María Isabel hugs her dear father tightly and says, “I love you so much, Papá.”

Diego and Andrea are startled, as an angry Francisco stands before them waiting for an explanation. “Francisco, it’s not what you think,” Andrea begins.
Francisco: “It’s not what I think? You both better have a good explanation then. You’re both laying there half-naked. So what am I to think, little sister?”
Andrea looks down, not knowing what to say.
Francisco (looking at Diego): “How could you? My father trusted you, I trusted you. We brought you into our home and this is how you repay us?!”
Diego: “Francisco, please calm down, let's talk about this.”
Francisco: “Calm down? You debauched my sister and now you want me to calm down?”
Andrea: “He did no such thing! Diego would never.”
Francisco: “So you gave yourself like a common harlot? Is that it sister?”
Andrea is deeply hurt at hearing this, and Diego cannot stay calm anymore.
Diego: “Do not speak to her like that!”
Francisco is so furious he can’t stand to hear anymore, and he lunges at Diego. A horrified Andrea pleads with them to stop to no avail, as they will not listen. Upon hearing the commotion, A heavily pregnant Magdalena comes out to see what’s going on. She too is horrified at the scene before her and shouts for them to stop. “Francisco please, I beg you stop this!” she exclaims. They finally come to their senses and stop fighting.
Francisco: “I want you gone! Leave at once and never come back! You are not to see her or even breathe in her direction, or so help me god I will kill you! You hear me?”
Diego: “I won’t leave her.”
Francisco: “Get out!!”
Magdalena: “Diego please, I think it’s best if you leave now.”
Andrea: “It’s okay Carabi, go, we will talk later. I will be okay.”
Diego: “Okay, I’ll go…for now.”
Diego took his leave with a heavy heart, and Andrea ran inside in tears. Francisco started to go after her, but Magdalena stopped him. “Let her go,” she said. “I need to talk to her,'' he responded. “You can talk later when you both have calmed down,” she replied.

As promised, Diego brought Andrea back home by the early evening. Francisco was waiting for her in the living area. Diego thanked him again for allowing Andrea to join him and his family. Francisco nods at him and asks Andrea about her day with Diego’s tribe. Andrea is flustered since that kiss still lingered on her mind. She is very short in her response to her brother, then excuses herself with the pretext that the animals need to be escorted to the barn. Francisco looks puzzled by her reaction because Andrea is never at a loss for words. “What’s happened to her?,” he asks suspiciously. “Nothing, she is just very tired from all the festivities, I'm sure she will be fine by morning,” Diego responds.
Francisco: “You’re probably right. I better go help her put the animals away. Andrés Rogelio is finally asleep and hopefully, he sleeps through the night, so we can all get some much needed rest.”
Diego: “I can help her, you go on and get some rest.”
Francisco: “You are not on duty Diego, I don't want to trouble you.”
Diego: “It’s no trouble at all, I’m happy to do it. Go get some sleep while you can.”
Francisco: “Thank you.”
Francisco heads to his bedroom, then stops and calls out to Diego.
Francisco: “You are a good friend Diego, we are lucky to have you.”
They smile at each other and continue on their way.
As Andrea stares at the night sky, Diego startles her, approaching from behind. “I thought you were putting the animals away”, he asks.
Andrea laughs nervously, “Yes, I was getting to it”.
Andrea has barely spoken to Diego since leaving his village; he has a look of concern on his face. “Are you ok? You’re so quiet. Is it because I Kissed you”? Andrea looks down, away from those piercing eyes, unsure of what to say. She can feel the heat, emanating from deep within, causing her skin to turn a rose-colored hue. Sensing the change in her, believing that he had made her uncomfortable, he says “I am sorry if I offended you, it was never my intention to upset you Andrea.” Diego continues “We were having such a good time and I got carried away… The truth is Andrea, that I have loved you since we were kids, I thought maybe you felt the same way. I truly am sorry Andrea, it will never happen again. I will finish here and go.”
As Diego turns to walk away, Andrea suddenly finds her voice again.
“Carabi wait… I am not upset. I rather enjoyed that kiss and…” She is overcome by the heat coming from inside her, and she confesses “I would very much like to repeat it”. No longer able to contain her passion, Andrea leans in and kisses Diego. He reciprocates with an even greater passion; the taste of her lips was intoxicating and the way his hands traced her body made her tingle with delight. Diego comes to his senses long enough to realize this has gone too far. “I should stop, I am sorry.”
But Andrea embraces him and kisses him with such a yearning urgency, “I don’t want you to stop,” she says.
Story continues under the cut (TW-NSFW: sex, nudity; no genitals)
At this moment, they realized that they could no longer resist what they both felt. Diego gently picks her up and lays her down on a soft pile of hay and they breathlessly give themselves to each other. It felt as if time was standing still and the world around them was a blur, it was just them and their all-consuming passion for each other.

When Diego and Andrea arrive at his village, the Kasikes and tribal members are already there, and the ceremonies have begun. Diego brings Andrea over to his grandmother.
Andrea: “Hola Senora, how are you?”.
Iwanona: “Andrea, is that you? My last time I saw you, you were a little girl--look at you, so grown and beautiful.”
Andrea: “Thank you for your kind words Señora.”
Iwanona : “Please call me Iwanona (Iwa-no-na).”
Diego: “I’ll let you two catch up while I go change”
While Diego is away Andrea gets to know the tribes better. They are all very welcoming and make her feel at home. The Kasikes are telling the stories of their people, to the young tribe members, these stories will be passed down for generations to come. Andrea listens in awe. She always did enjoy the stories Isabel will tell them when she and her siblings were younger, and as she sat here listening to their histories it made her appreciate her Mamá all the more.
Iwanona: “I am so glad you are here Andrea, Carabi was so happy when he told me you would be joining us--he just wouldn't stop talking about you.”
Andrea (blushing): “I am glad to be here too.”
Iwanona: “I have a little something for you” Iwanona has made a flower crown for Andrea, which she gently places on her head.
Andrea: Oh, it’s beautiful! Thank you so much.”
When Diego came back out in his tribal outfit , Andrea’s mouth dropped open as she took him all in. She knew that staring at a man this was not very lady like, but she couldn't help herself. Is as if she was under a spell “He is so beautiful” she thought.”
Diego extends his hand out to Andrea and says. “The fire dance is about to commence, would you join me please?”
Andrea was lost in his eyes. Suddenly remembering her manners, she took his and and said “Yes, of course.”
They all dance and sing around the fire, and the tribal members begin chanting. Andrea can’t make out what is being said, yet she feels elated.
The chant become more intense and so does their movements , they go round and round until finally Andrea and Diego fall to the ground exhausted. “
That was amazing, “I’ve... I’ve never felt so free. Oh Carabi, thank you for sharing this with me.” she says. Seeing Andrea so happy, delights Diego. He finds her laughter intoxicating.
Diego holds her hand and whispers softly in her ear. “Dak’ro buk.” Then, he leans in and kisses her.

Antonio and Isabel arrived safely in Spain. María Isabel was delighted to see her parents. She had been missing them so much lately. Especially her dear Mamá, who she could always confide in.
María has a great feast prepared in honor of her parents, and José joins them for supper. There is never a dull moment during dinner, as they enjoy each other's company very much and are happy to be together once again. After supper, the conversations continued in the living area. The men partake in a game of chess and some cocktails.
Now that they have a few moments to themselves, Isabel asks María how she is doing after her birthing trauma.
María Isabel: “I am doing well Mamá, but…unfortunately, the birth complications have left me barren.”
Isabel: “Oh dear, are you sure? I only ask because as you know I was told the same thing only to end up having 3 more pregnancies afterward.”
María Isabel: “The doctor was pretty clear Mamá, I cannot bear any more children. It may cost me my life to do so.”
Isabel: “I’m so sorry Mija, I know how much you wanted a large family. But you know, miracles happen all the time. We will go to mass and light a candle to our Lady of Altagracia.”
María Isabel was not as optimistic as her dear Mamá, she just smiled at her and continued to drink her tea.
Isabel (holding her daughter’s hand reassuringly): “And if it is The Watcher’s will that you have no more children, that is alright too. You have 2 beautiful children and a husband that adores you, and one day, you will have a house full of grandkids.”
María Isabel gives her mama’s hand a gentle squeeze and says, “Oh how I’ve missed you, Mama. I’m so glad you’re here.”

It’s a cloudy day in Hispaniola, and it looks like it may start to rain at any moment. It’s been a couple of weeks since Antonio and Isabel left for Spain. Magdalena is out with the children collecting eggs and milk. Andrés Rogelio loves to help his auntie Ángela Cristina. He always follows her around the farm, but she doesn't mind it, as she is happy to care for and play with him.
Diego arrives early today because he wants to speak with Andrea before he starts work. He brought her a freshly picked rose. “That is so thoughtful of you Carabi, thank you,” she says to him as she happily accepts the rose and gives him a warm smile. “I am so glad you like it Andrea.” He responds and takes hold of her hands.
Diego: “Andrea, my people are having a gathering tomorrow night. The Kasikes will be telling important stories and there will be songs and fire dancing.”
Andrea: “Fire dancing! That sounds wonderful!”
Diego: “I’m glad you feel that way because I’d love for you to join me.”
Andrea: “Oh Carabi, I would love to! But with my father away, we have to ask my brother’s permission.”
Diego: “Of course, I will ask your brother.”
Just then, Francisco approaches them.
Francisco: “Ask me what?”
Diego proceeds to tell Francisco about the gathering the Kasikes are holding, and asks permission for Andrea to accompany him to the gathering.
Francisco: “I don’t know Diego…Papa is gone and I don't think it would be appropriate for Andrea to go unchaperoned. Magdalena is in no condition to travel and I won’t leave her alone.”
Andrea: “Oh brother please, this Carabi we are talking about—we have known him since we were kids. Please say yes!”
Francisco looks at them both and thinks to himself. Andrea has a point, they have known Diego since childhood, and he has always been kind and very respectful. He finally says, “Okay, you may go.” Andrea excitedly hugs him as she says, “Oh thank you brother!”
Francisco looks a Diego sternly and says, “You will have her home at a decent time. Don't make me regret this.”
