Put Up Your Dukes (Carolia mantid: Stagmomantis carolina) by AARON ("Ronny") Rentz Via Flickr: This little guy was so much fun to shoot. We spent about 1 1/2 hours "playing" with him. I swear, you would have thought he was posing for us. At times he looked like he was actually smiling. He took on the role of boxer, orchestra director and just plain old model. He was relocated to a much better place than he was found. Our only disappointment was we couldn't keep him as a pet. We also worried a little about where we set him free- in the middle of a patch of four-o'clocks . Problem with that was hummingbirds frequent the flowers and we read that these little guy had been known to snare hummers.

" My, my...aren't you HUGE ? " The question comes more as a joking comment than it does an actual, genuine question, though he can't say he's exactly SURPRISED to see another giant insect, considering Butterfly was not too far away, but still. GIANT. It was almost a little intimidating to the only 6 foot roach.
" So, I'm going to guess. RADIATION or some type of GENETIC MUTATION. "

Beneath the moon's indifferent gaze, the kami stalks the concrete jungle that stretches like a wound upon the earth. Each towering skyscraper mocks the vastness of his domain, a testament to the arrogance of humanity-- a species blind to the consequences of their hubris.
With every thunderous footfall, the wronged, desperate, hateful kami unleashes the fury of the ocean's depths upon their fragile creations. Glass shatters like brittle bones beneath titanic weight, and steel bends and buckles before Godzilla's relentless advance. The acrid scent of smoke and fear fills the air, a symphony of chaos...
Even for every thunderous, massive step, the beast cannot help but take notice of one small, usually insignificant human. One with a bandana tied around his head, eyes darting about, so beady and black. For Godzilla, the appearance of this boy-- not really a man-- was like gazing upon an insect.
I know you. The beast realizes, all at once, the thought like lightning amongst the shrieking thunder of rage within his mind.

Insect Repellent Active Ingredients Market: Key Factors behind Market’s Rapid Growth
Insect-repellent active ingredients are substances used in formulations to repel or deter insects, protecting against bites and potential vector-borne diseases. Due to several circumstances, the need for insect repellent has been rising over time. The increasing number of vectors is one of the primary causes. The main goal of insect repellents is to reduce the number of insects that can harm people, such as bugs, fleas, flies, ticks, and mosquitoes. Around the world, there have been more and more epidemics brought on by pests like cockroaches, bugs, mosquitoes, flies, and ants. Different kinds of insect repellent compositions are being produced in order to stop these kinds of outbreaks. The type of insects targeted, formulations, concentrations, active substances, permit restrictions, and product registration can all affect the production process.
The insect repellent active ingredients market size is anticipated to be valued at $1.0 billion in 2023, with a 7.6% CAGR to reach $1.5 billion by 2028.
Active ingredients commonly used in insect repellents:
DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide): DEET is one of the most common and effective insect repellent ingredients. It is effective against a wide range of insects, including mosquitoes and ticks.
Picaridin (Icaridin): Picaridin is a synthetic compound that has become increasingly popular as an alternative to DEET. It is effective against mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE): This is a natural oil extracted from the lemon eucalyptus tree. It is effective against mosquitoes.
Schedule a call with our Analysts to discuss your business needs: https://www.marketsandmarkets.com/speaktoanalystNew.asp?id=111358884
IR3535 (Insect Repellent 3535): This is another synthetic repellent that is effective against mosquitoes, ticks, and other arthropods.
Permethrin: While not typically used on the skin directly, permethrin is a common insect repellent for clothing and gear. It is effective against mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects.
Citronella: This natural oil is derived from lemongrass and is often used in candles, sprays, and lotions as a mosquito repellent.
Prominent firms featured:
Major players operating in the insect repellent active ingredients market include Spectrum Brands Inc. (US), Reckitt Beneckiser Group Plc (UK), Henkel AG & Co KGaA (Germany), MERCK KGaA (Germany), S.C. Johnson & Son Inc. (US), Dabur (India), Godrej (India), Sawyer (US), BUGG Products, LLC (US), Coghlan’s (Canada), Vertellus (US), Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd (Japan), Clariant (Switzerland), Citrefine (UK), NK Chemiosys Pvt. Ltd. (India), and Shorgun Organics (India).
The insect repellent active ingredients market is influenced by various factors that drive its growth. Some of the key driving factors include:
Increasing Awareness about Vector-Borne Diseases: Rising awareness about diseases transmitted by insects, such as malaria, Zika virus, dengue fever, and Lyme disease, has led to a growing demand for insect repellents. Consumers are more conscious about protecting themselves from insect bites to prevent these diseases, driving the market for repellent products.
Global Spread of Diseases: The globalization of trade and travel has facilitated the spread of diseases to new regions. As a result, there is an increased need for effective insect repellents in areas where these diseases were previously uncommon, contributing to the growth of the market.
Outdoor Recreational Activities: The popularity of outdoor recreational activities such as camping, hiking, and sports has led to a higher demand for insect repellents. People engaging in outdoor activities are more prone to insect bites, and the need for protection against pests during such activities fuels the market.
Climate Change: Changes in climate patterns and global warming have led to the expansion of the geographical range of many insects. This has increased the prevalence of diseases in regions where they were not historically common, creating a greater need for insect repellents.
Product Innovation and Development: Ongoing research and development efforts in the field of insect repellents have resulted in the introduction of new and improved formulations. Innovations in active ingredients, formulations, and delivery systems contribute to the market's growth by providing consumers with more effective and convenient repellent options.
Government Initiatives and Regulations: Government initiatives to control the spread of vector-borne diseases and regulations promoting the use of safe and effective insect repellents play a crucial role. Public health campaigns and regulations encouraging the use of repellents contribute to market growth.
Mosquitoes segment, by insect type is expected to dominate the market with the largest share in 2023.
Mosquitoes are found in various regions worldwide, including tropical, subtropical, and even temperate climates. They are a common nuisance and a persistent problem, particularly in areas with high mosquito populations. This widespread presence of mosquitoes contributes to the sustained demand for mosquito repellents and active ingredients to protect individuals from their bites. Mosquitoes are not only disease vectors but also cause significant annoyance and discomfort with their biting behavior. The itchy welts left behind by mosquito bites can disrupt daily activities and negatively impact quality of life. People seek effective mosquito repellents to prevent these bites and minimize the discomfort associated with mosquito infestations.

Asia Pacific is expected to account for the largest market share in 2023.
The insect repellent active ingredients industry has been studied in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America and Rest of the World. The Asia Pacific region is known for having a high prevalence of insect-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and Zika virus. According to article by National Library of Medicine 2022, India reported a ZIKV outbreak in Kerala in July 2021, the first activity in the region of South-East Asia since the outbreak in Rajasthan, India, in 2018. At least 70 ZIKV disease cases were found after extensive testing and confirmed by PCR by August 2021. These diseases pose significant health risks to the population, leading to a greater demand for insect repellent products and active ingredients to protect against insect bites.

OFF! Insect repellent was founded by S.C Johnson which was created by Samuel Curtis Johnson in 1886. It was first sold in 1957. S.C Johnson is a family company, led by the Johnson family of Racine, Wisconsin. It is an insect repellent brand produced in Finland. This product is very important, especially in warmer weather. It protects myself and my family from various mosquitos and small insects. It has a large impact on days when I will spend a lot of time outdoors, such as playing outside with my dog. It is manufactured in an SC Johnson factory which has various locations in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. Factories workers often make around or below minimum wage, getting paid less for the labor than in the United States.

It had been too much for her. The Winter fete in which the ballroom was decorated in beautiful colors of silver and gold. Every noble was dressed in beautiful waves of intricate fabrics and silks. They looked like blossoming flowers as they twirled and pranced along the gilded dancefloor.
Even herself, the Prince’s bodyguard was dressed in a beautiful silk gown of muted colors. Pale green in color, and decorated with glimmering lace and trim. If felt foreign on her flesh. A tangible reminder that she certainly did not belong there. It was of the insistence of Prince Vasily that she dressed to match the colors he bore. If she had it her way, she’d would have worn her usual attire of a simple white tunic and dark pants. Though, if she were being honest, she did admire how the others were dressed.
Lark Trevelyan found herself in the safety of an abandoned balcony. Lord Vasily was spending time with his mother and thus surrounded by a sea of royal guards; and her presence by her majesty’s words were “ unneeded and unnecessary.” fine by her, she wanted to flee back to her room but she had a feeling that Vasily would be disappointed. So she there she stood, alone on a balcony, enduring the ball for the sake of the elder prince.
She sighed outwardly and watched the quiet scenery. There as a chill in the air, and without much thought, she meandered her hand through the air in twirls of lazy patterns, and out from her palm came the fluttering of pinkish orange hues that buzzed and swirled like little insects around her. It brought a rare smile to her face as the wisps fluttered into the air.
It suddenly became apparent that she wasn’t alone, and in a quick motion she had pivoted with a hand gripping her rapier, her body had stiffened and she wore a near scowl as she came face to face with the younger Prince of Ravka.
Her brows knitted upward in a look of surprise and her shoulders slumped as she relaxed. Her hand fell from  her sword. She crossed her arms over her chest as she gazed at Nikolai.

“ Your highness.” she greeted in a taciturn tone before giving a half hearted curtesy.

THAT   is, by far, the biggest insect she’s ever seen.
Tumblr media
She considers this a good thing, as a Stygian Spider would easily dwarf this butterfly; giant spiders that could talk, and often did ad nauseum if it meant they could secure some sort of deal. Her mind drifts to the man she once met in the desert, the man who’d traded twenty years of his life for some of their priceless, nigh-impenetrable spider silk. But none of that had anything to do with this sapphire butterfly fluttering about the thick branches of the Airaisal Forest, massive enough to easily come up to her waist if it were to stay still that long. The sun filters through its translucent wings, making light blue patterns dance along the forest floor. It was... mesmerizing.
It’s unbothered by the sudden crack of undergrowth, but Aelin most certainly snapped to attention. A hand remains on the dagger strapped to her thigh, but for the most part, she relaxes upon finding the source; a dark-haired human likely turned around ten different ways by the faeries.
❝   Amazing, isn’t it ?   ❞   Aelin asks, head canted toward the butterfly that continues to perch on a particularly thick branch. It’s a wonder it can support its weight.   ❝   Are you lost, or wandering on purpose ?   ❞

Gullah-Geechee Community: Hear Us On Climate Change
Ed Atkins Jr., 68, is proud of his family tradition. He’s a third-generation fisherman and owner of Atkins Live Baits and Local Oysters, which was started by his mother and father. But Atkins is worried that the effect of climate change on the waters are hurting not only his business, but also the traditions of his Gullah-Geechee community.
“I’m out there every day, and mostly every night,” says Atkins, who has been catching fat shrimp, oysters and mullet since he was a child. But now the warmer waters are sharply affecting the fishing that has been not only a tradition, but central to the existence of the African American community descended from enslaved West Africans that has lived on the coast in the Lowcountry for four centuries.
“The last several years there’s been a lot of changes. People wonder how I catch live shrimp year-round. That’s because the water temperatures have warmed up, and the shrimp don’t migrate to deeper waters like they did in the past,” Atkins says.
Then, there’s the oyster problem.
“The oysters are depleting because you get a lot of bacteria in the water. In the years before now, when cool weather comes it kills a lot of the bacteria in the water. But if it doesn’t get cold enough, now the bacteria remain in that water all year round and it kills the oysters,” explains Atkins. “Once the oysters die the bed dies and you get more pollution in the water.”
For a people that have survived on farming and fishing in a coastal area that used to be isolated, the changes are threatening the survival of the Gullah-Geechee people, who are proud of the way they have retained their cultural heritage.
“Black people in the 1960s and ’70s, that’s all they depended on. They made it fine—even during the Depression back in the ’30s. They made a living, didn’t go hungry and had someplace to get something to eat—either farming of fishing,” Atkins remembers. “But if [climate change] continues, you’ll be able to farm a little bit, but you won’t be able to fish too much.”
Queen Quet, chieftess and head of state for the Gullah-Geechee nation, says her community has been sounding the alarm about the dangers of climate change for more than 20 years.
“Most people in the world are mainlanders, and island people have very unique, distinct cultures and traditions and we know we can’t live without what’s going on with the water. Everything in our life has to do with it,” Queen Quet says, noting that warnings about obvious signs like damaged trees standing in saltwater along the shorelines of the Sea Islands have fallen on deaf ears amid an increased focus on now-expensive waterfront property.
“The trees are laying down along the shoreline. They’re not standing up. They’re laying down and there’s no storm, no wind, there’s something wrong,” Queen Quet says, adding that the general response from local governments was “‘Yeah, you know we’ve got other priorities.’ Until you lose 10 to 20 feet of shoreline and then you have people, especially in the gated communities around here saying they want a permit to build a wall to protect their property.”
Queen Quet, an activist, historian and computer scientist, has spoken before the United Nations and many other organizations, including Congress. She says the Gullah-Geechee community is doing all it can to protect itself and its land.
“We’re working with global partners because we get a lot more global partners than we do United States partners with the work we do, especially as related to climate change, and sea level rise and ocean acidification,” Queen Quet says, ticking off other danger signs. “We’re seeing flooding on clear days; on sunny days, why are roads flooding? Then you realize: because the sea level is higher by several feet than it used to be. Not only is the temperature of the water changing, but we also had the salinity of the water changing.”
Tropical biologist Carlos Chacon, manager of Natural History at the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island, S.C., says warmer weather and warmer water is affecting plants, sea turtles, shrimp and oysters among many other creatures, particularly in sea level communities in the Lowcountry.
“I think we are in a position that is way more vulnerable just by the fact of being at sea level and ocean front,” Chacon explains. “This is where the storms hit, and it is more vulnerable for the sea-level rise that is triggered by climate change. We are having serious problems. Coastal areas, sea level areas, island—all of those places are having dramatic effects.”
Chacon says climate change is causing dramatic changes globally, particularly for plants, insects, reptiles and animals whose reproductive cycles are triggered by length of day as well as the temperature of the water and the air. The severity of storms including hurricanes is increasing in the Lowcountry, and beach erosion is on the rise as well.
“Everything is changing, and I can’t say what is going to happen because nobody knows. It never happened before,” Chacon says.
He also has some thoughts about why some don’t realize the seriousness of the problem. The changes are happening now, he says, within a single generation. Things like glaciers, coral reefs and polar bears may become the subject of tales and history, like dinosaurs.
“It’s a very complicated and very big problem, and then obviously politics are involved and unfortunately politicians don’t usually think in a big time frame,” Chacon says, “they think on their next election cycle. It’s not something you can fix in four years, and most voters don’t want to learn that their houses are in peril.”
Queen Quet says one possible solution is following the traditions of the Gullah-Geechee community, which already lives in balance with the land and the waterways.
“We have never overfished. We do not do building patterns that build into the coastline. We are not people who go out and derby fish, meaning to try and take everything you can out of the creek. We are communal people,” Queen Quet says. “One of the critical things is just trying to encourage our younger people to get with the elders so that they know how to live in the traditional way that we live, because that will sustain them. It has been sustaining us and our ancestors for over 400 years.”

BANTU PLACE NAMES IN SOUTH CAROLINA Joseph E. Holloway, Ph.D. California State University Northridge
When Prof. John F. Szwed wrote "Africa lies just off the coast of Georgia," he was referring to the mainland coastal areas and adjacent Sea Islands of Georgia and South Carolina. These are places where the most direct living repository of African culture anywhere in North America exists. During the slave trade and until 1858, well after the importation of slaves was banned, there was an undetected traffic in illegally transported Africans brought directly from Africa, South America, and the Caribbean to the Sea Islands. In spite of the U.S. Navy patrols sent to enforce the ban against importing slaves, the trade infiltrated the complex watery wilderness off the southern coast of the United States, because of the geographic isolation of the Sea Islands, African culture has been retained in almost every element of Sea Island culture, including art, food, folktales, language, and oral tradition. In South Carolina, African naming practices, net making, fishing practices, the right shout, basketry, and burial ceremonies are woven into the local culture.
The Sea Islands begin north of Georgetown, South Carolina, and extend through parts of northern Florida. Approximately 1,000 islands along the coast of South Carolina and Georgia are separated from the mainland by marshes, alluvial streams, and rivers. Some of the islands are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and are 20 miles or more from the mainland. They range in size from very small and uninhabitable islands, to the second largest island, Johns Islands, South Carolina, in the United States. South Carolina was settled by a large number of enslaved of Central Africa and as table 1 shows, imported more Africans from Central Africa than any other nation from West Africa. Because of South Carolina’s primary role in the slave trade, it is not surprising to have found 93 African place names of Bantu origin. This search has been aided by a publication of the University of South Carolina, Names in South Carolina, which has provided a wealth of place name materials.
TABLE 1. Summary of Africans Imported into Charleston, S.C. Insect Repellent Active Ingredients Market Trends
Insect Repellent Active Ingredients Market Forecast And Trends
The insect repellent active ingredients market is anticipated to be valued $1.0 billion in 2023, with a 7.6% CAGR to reach $1.5 billion by 2028. The demand for insect repellent has been steadily increasing over the years due to several factors. One of the main drivers is the growing vector population. Insect repellents focus on controlling the infestation of mosquitoes, flies, ticks, bugs, fleas, and other organisms, which can cause adverse effects on humans. There have been rising instances of epidemics caused by pests such as cockroaches, bugs, mosquitoes, flies, and ants across the globe. To prevent such epidemics, various types of insect repellent formulations are being manufactured. The manufacturing may vary according to the type of insects targeted, formulations, active ingredients, concentration, permit requirements, and product registration.
Market Driver: Growing cases of disease outbreak.
More than 17% of all infectious diseases are vector-borne, according to a report released by the WHO in March 2020. Each year, these illnesses result in about 700,000 deaths. They may be caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. Life-threatening diseases like chikungunya, influenza, the H1N1 virus, Zika virus, and dengue have all been on the rise over the past ten years and are typically carried by insects. The Zika virus outbreak in the Americas in 2017 (spread by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) was the most latest outbreak caused by insect vectors.
The most harmful diseases are spread by mosquitoes. Millions of people globally contract mosquito-borne diseases including malaria and dengue each year. The need for insect repellent products has increased recently due to the spread of diseases.
Malaria is a parasitic infection transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. Globally, an estimated 219 million cases of malaria are reported; it results in more than 400,000 deaths annually. Most of the deaths occur in children below the age of five years.
Dengue is another deadly infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Every year, more than 3.9 billion people in over 129 countries contract dengue. The disease reportedly claims an estimated 40,000 lives every year. According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) (India), in 2017, about 11,552 cases of dengue were reported in Tamil Nadu, recording a 350% increase in the number of cases compared to 2016.

Aerosols segment of the insect repellent active ingredients market by end application is projected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period.
Based on end application type, the aerosols segment estimated to account for the highest growth rate. Aerosol insect repellents are widely used and highly effective forms of insect protection, providing a convenient and versatile solution for repelling a variety of biting insects. These products come in pressurized cans or containers and are designed to disperse a fine mist or spray of repellent. Aerosol insect repellents offer several advantages. Their spray format allows for easy and even application, ensuring complete coverage on exposed skin. The fine mist enables the repellent to reach difficult-to-access areas, such as clothing folds or hair. This makes aerosol repellents suitable for outdoor activities and areas with high insect populations.
Major players operating in the insect repellent active ingredients market includes Spectrum Brands Inc. (US), Reckitt Beneckiser Group Plc (UK), Henkel AG & Co KGaA (Germany), MERCK KGaA (Germany), S.C. Johnson & Son Inc. (US), Dabur (India), Godrej (India), Sawyer (US), BUGG Products, LLC (US), Coghlan’s (Canada), Vertellus (US), Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd (Japan), Clariant (Switzerland), Citrefine (UK), NK Chemiosys Pvt. The Asia Pacific market is projected to contribute the largest share for the insect repellent active ingredients market.
Asia Pacific region is confronted with a significant challenge posed by vector-borne diseases, transmitted primarily by insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. These diseases, namely dengue fever, malaria, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis, have a profound impact on public health, resulting in substantial loss of life and economic burden. Each year, a considerable number of cases are reported across key countries in the region. Mosquitoes, being prevalent insects in the Asia Pacific, are notorious for their role in spreading diseases like dengue fever, which affects millions of people annually. In 2021 according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), India alone reported approximately 67,377 cases of dengue fever, indicating a rising trend in the country. Similarly, Japan faces the persistent threat of Japanese encephalitis, transmitted by mosquitoes, with thousands of cases reported each year. This is expected to drive the large market for insect repellents in the region.

“I’ll be just a moment!” A thick accented voice shouted down the hall, followed by the chattering chorus of animals and insects... Except none of them were properly animals at all. Many of them may look that way, but no, they were yokai. Monsters that had overcome their fiendish, demonic ways, rehabilitated by the doctor who was quickly scribbling down inventory in the back room.
From the doorway, a dark masked face peered. What followed next was a long snout, furry. Then a tubby belly, bulging over a loincloth haphazardly tied to hide... unmentionables. The raccoon-dog-like creature waddled over, gazing up sleepily at the visitor.
It asked Annie something in a mish-mash of gibberish and English, before stuffing a piece of banana it had in its loincloth pocket into his mouth. It chewed noisily, lips smacking together.
“I thought we agreed on no snacks before dinner--” The stern voice from before returned, this time with a face to it. Young and slightly hairy, Henrik’s face was a bit gaunt, but his eyes were bright upon seeing the visiting half-demon.
“Oh. Hallo. What can I help you with?” Grunting with effort, he hauled the tanuki on the floor up into his arms. “Please don’t mind Jakki, he’s mischievous, but he only really wants treats.”
