The Academy Award® winner about star-crossed love that spans the years – and the globe. After her triumph as the lunchroom temptress in the crime classic The Postman Always Rings Twice, Lana Turner expanded her range with Green Dolphin Street. Set in 19th century Europe and New Zealand, this sweeping romance tells the story of two beautiful sisters, one headstrong (Turner) and one gentle (Donna Reed), and of the man (Richard Hart) who marries one even though he loves the other. The film’s riptides of emotion are matched by breathtaking physical tumult: a fierce Maori uprising plus a catastrophic earthquake and tidal wave that earned the film a 1947 Oscar® for special effects.  The job – a career breakthrough – is supposed to go to hoofer Johnny Brett, but a mix-up in names gives it to his partner. Another example of Broadway hopes dashed? Not when Johnny is played by Fred Astaire. Sparkling Cole Porter songs, clever comedy and dance legends Astaire and Eleanor Powell make the final Broadway Melody (co-starring George Murphy) a film to remember. Powell’s nautical “All Ashore" routine (a/k/a I Am the Captain”), Astaire’s blissful “I’ve Got My Eyes on You” and Fred & Eleanor's elaborate routine to Cole Porter's classic "I Concentrate On You" are more than enough to please any fan. But they’re just a warm-up for the leads to tap one finale number into immortality: “Begin the Beguine,” introduced by Frank Sinatra in That’s Entertainment! with, “You can wait around and hope, but you’ll never see the likes of this again.”

Framed for manslaughter after he breaks a story about city corruption, reporter Frank Ross is sure he’ll prove his innocence and walk out of prison a free man. But that’s not how the system works at Rocky Point Penitentiary. There, cellblock guards are vicious, the jute-mill labor is endless, and the powers Ross fought on the outside conspire to keep him in. Frank’s hope is turned to hopelessness. And he’s starting to crack. Two of the screen’s famed tough guys star in this prison movie that casts a reform-minded eye on the brutalizing effects of life in the slammer. James Cagney “hits a white-hot peak as [Ross,] the embittered, stir-crazy fall guy” (Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide). And George Raft (Cagney’s friend since their vaudeville days) portrays racketeer Hood Stacey, who may hold the key to springing Ross.

DON'T PLAY ME CHEAP
Ike & Tina Turner — 1963
If it hadn't been for the unexplained absence of a singer named Art Lassiter at a 1960 recording session supervised by the illustrious Ike Turner, the world might have been robbed of Tina Turner's luminescent ferocity. At the very least, her indelible emergence onto the national scene would likely have been delayed a wee bit.
When Lassiter, formerly the lead singer of a pair of Turner-associated vocal groups called the Rockers and the Trojans, turned up AWOL that fateful spring day in St. Louis, up stepped a well-prepared Tina to growl, shriek, and snarl her way through a shockingly raw utterly uncompromising Ike-penned ditty called "A Fool In Love" (she had previously done a cameo for Ike as Little Ann on an obscure 45 for Tune Town Records in 1958 called "Boxtop", but it went nowhere fast).
This time, success came swiftly. Juggy Murray's Sue Records picked up the master, and Ike must have smiled as "A Fool In Love" by the newly christened Ike & Tina Turner flew up to #2 R&B and #27 pop on Billboard's charts in the latter stages of 1960 The two weren't the only ones sporting new monikers — legend has it that Lassiter's female vocal group, the Artettes, suddenly morphed into the Ikettes when the record took off.
For Ike, a constantly looming presence in studios across Mississippi (he'd recorded prolifically in his hometown of Clarksdale for the Bihari brothers' Modern/RPM labels), Memphis (he was Sam Phillips' right-hand man during the pre-Sun era), and St. Louis (his home base from 1955 on) throughout the 1950s as a bandleader, pianist, guitarist, talent scout, and producer, the song's crossover success launched him to an entirely new plateau.
For Tina, born Annie Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee on November 26, 1938 and raised in nearby Nutbush (a tiny community immortalized in her 1973 hit "Nutbush City Limits'), it was the beginning of a rags-to-riches-back-to-rags-to-more-riches- sans-Ike tale that's nothing short of amazing Ike's first introduction to young Annie Mae came one night at an East St. Louis nightspot where his vaunted combo, the Kings of Rhythm, held forth for sweaty revelers. Out of nowhere, the brash teenager grabbed the microphone and began screaming the blues.
Turner's aggregation had already enjoyed its share of standout singers over the years. Jackie Brenston fronted the Kings of Rhythm on the 1951 Chess Records R&B chart-topper "Rocket 88", sometimes referred to as the first rock 'n' roll record. Other standout front men included Billy Gayles, who sang the rocking "I'm Tore up" in 1956 (when the band was signed to the Federal label) Clayton Love, and young Jimmy Thomas. But Tina beat them all hands down in the energy department (she was considerably more fun from a visual standpoint, too).
Ike & Tina tasted hitdom again after "A Fool In Love" with the less-than-humble "I Idolize You" (one of Ike's copyrights, natch) before 1961's "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" became the duo's biggest pop crossover success until their revved-up remake of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" scorched the earth a decade later.
Ironically, "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" didn't even feature Ike aurally; another notable duet vet, guitarist Mickey Baker, provides the slightly dopey vocal retorts to Tina's teasing on the track. Mickey's partner, Sylvia Vanderpool, contributed the chunky guitar figure making any direct involvement from Ike pretty negligible.
More hits soon followed at Sue for the pair, though none quite so commanding across-the-board. "Poor Fool" and "Tra La La La La" both did well on the R&B and pop charts, while a torrid "You Should'a Treated Me Right" graced the lower end of the pop lists in mid-1962. In addition to releasing a steady stream of singles, Sue boss Murray had the good sense not to discriminate against the album market when it came to Ike & Tina product-three killer albums by the pair preceded the issue of Don't Play Me Cheap (Sue 2005) in 1962, and another would soon follow.
Unlike its hit-laden predecessors The Soul of Ike & Tina Turner and Dynamite! another Sue set, Dance With Ike Tina Turner, was actually a blistering all-instrumental set by the Kings of Rhythm), there wasn't a chart entry anywhere to be found on the now-incredibly rare Don't Play Me Cheap. In fact, the album represented a major stylistic departure for Tina, who was transported all the way uptown by the ambitious arrangements sketched out by veteran R&B jack-of-all-trades Rene Hall and the lesser-recalled Jesse Herrin.
Ike's chunky guitar work, a staple of their previous triumphs, is nowhere to be found throughout the album, although he's credited with writing every song but The Real Me", an attractive Curtis Mayfield composition. Ike even received erroneous credit on the original album jacket for writing "Love Letters", a smoldering ballad that was then a current hit for another sexy soul chanteuse, Ketty Lester, on Era Records. Tina predictably attacks each song at maximum force, from the opening "Wake up" (easily one of the set's highlights, thanks in no small part to the exciting call-and-response setup between Tina and her erstwhile Ikettes) to the closing "My Everything To Me "Wake up" comprised one side of the only single (Sue ever pulled from the LP, coupled with the uptown soul stunner "Don't Play Me Cheap".
Tina's bombastic, gloriously unschooled approach doesn't mesh all that well with the bouncy strings soaking "l Made A Promise up Above", and her guttural groans on the torch ballads, "Desire" and "Forever Mine" contrast markedly with sophisticated orchestrations that were probably better suited to Etta James or Maxine Brown than the dynamic, no-holds- barred Tina.
It's a virtual holiday for violins and brass on "Those Ways", Tina coping as best she could by simply screaming her lungs out. But the Latin tinge of "Mamma Tell Him", kettle drum and all, suited the belter nicely, and the ominous, pulsing "Pretend" was similarly more in alignment with Tina's strengths.
Ike wisely reasserted himself after this project, although the duo didn't stick around Sue much longer (there was one more album, “It's Gonna Work Out Fine”, that reverted to the rocking R&B sound that made the pair stars in the first place).
For the rest of the decade, Ike & Tina were virtual recording nomads, bouncing between labels reasonably large-Kent, where they hit with a catchy "I Can't Believe What You Say" in 1964; Warner Brothers' Loma subsidiary, Philles, where the resounding failure of their monumental "River Deep- Mountain High" in 1966 sent mastermind Phil Spector into a career-threatening funk; Blue Thumb, and Minit — and small (Innis, Cenco, Pompeii, Sonja) before their steamdrill "Proud Mary" catapulted them to full-fledged national stardom in 1971
The tabloids had a field day with the seamy dissolve of the Turners' marriage. It's a lot more enjoyable to relive the days when Tina could dress up in a luxurious fur coat with a high collar and soulfully warn her errant Ikester not to play her cheap.
