Can Plant-Based Diets Improve Performance?

The recent documentary “The Game Changes” offers an interesting perspective and the suggestion that athletes could perform optimally when adhering to a plant-based diet. Patrik Baboumian, a German Strongman, is one strength-based athlete in the documentary to express a positive anecdotal plant-based experience. He claims his athletic performance has increased by 25% since adopting a vegetarian diet and does indeed hold the Guinness World Record for the heaviest yoke carried over 10 metres. However, the documentary fails to provide information regarding the quality of his previous omnivore diet, meaning the improvements made cannot be reliably analysed. For example, a well-balanced and nutritionally sound vegetarian diet may be deemed preferable than a poor-quality omnivorous diet for athletic performance. Additionally, whilst his world record still stands, he is yet to meet the qualifying standards for the World Strongest Man Competition. The use of performance enhancing drugs and supplements is prominent within the strongman community, yet this is not addressed in his claims or documentary. While Baboumian is undoubtedly strong, it is difficult to judge whether his performance and strength is related to his plant-based habits or the additional use of supplements.  

Alongside “The Game Changes” documentary, academics have investigated the effect plant-based diets have on performance. A study by Lynch and colleagues (2016) measured VO2 max performance in vegetarian and omnivore endurance athletes aged between 21 and 58 years old. They recorded a 13% greater VO2 max score in female vegetarians in comparison to female omnivores. However, no difference was observed in male VO2 max performance. Another study by Boutros and colleagues (2020) found similar improvements in submaximal and maximal VO2 performance in female vegans in comparison with female omnivores. It has been hypothesised that vegetarian and vegan diets may improve muscle glycogen stores and enhance endurance performance due to increased carbohydrate consumption. Contrary to this, a systematic review by Craddock and colleagues (2016) analysed the effect of a vegetarian and omnivore diet on strength, aerobic and anaerobic performance, and found no significant difference. Another study by Leischik and colleagues (2014) found no significant difference in ironman performance between a 48-year-old plant-based male triathlete and 10 mixed-diet triathletes of similar age.

Plant-based diets cannot conclusively be said to be superior for athletic performance in comparison to omnivorous diets. However, no detrimental effects on athletic performance have been observed from following a plant-based diet to date. Despite this, longitudinal research should be carried out to determine its true causal effect.

Oświadczenie ministra zdrowia Karla Lauterbacha kręci obecnie głową: W typowy dla"Covid-Heulbojen"sposób stały gość niemieckiego talk show wzywa obecnie do natychmiastowego szczepienia – ponieważ nie należy czekać, aż stanie się zbędne.

Biorąc pod uwagę bardzo łagodne kursy Omicron, dla wielu nie ma wątpliwości, że tak jest. Coraz więcej naukowców postrzega ten wariant jako wyjście z "pandemii" – w Danii obywatele już mają nadzieję na powrót do normalności w ciągu dwóch miesięcy. Ten bardzo nieprzyjemny dla niemieckiego rządu fakt coraz bardziej przenika do świadomości ludności – co nie tylko pozytywnie wpływa na chęć zapisania się na stałe szczepienia. Oczywiście zamówione dawki szczepionki nadal muszą jakoś trafić do ludzi. Dlatego nie wydaje się w istocie zaskakujące, że Lauterbach wzywa do jak najszybszego wprowadzenia obowiązkowych szczepień – bez tworzenia rejestru szczepień, co kosztowałoby czas. Wkrótce ten ostatni mógł zrozumieć, że kwartalne zastrzyki przeciwko katarowi są nie tylko bezcelowe dla całej populacji, ale nawet szkodliwe ze względu na możliwe skutki uboczne. Zwłaszcza, że święte szczepienia nawet nie zapobiegają chorobom.

Lauterbach powiedział teraz do sieci redakcyjnej Niemcy dosłownie:

Nie możemy czekać, aż obowiązkowe szczepienia staną się zbędne, ponieważ mamy bardzo wysoki poziom skażenia populacji.

To stwierdzenie należy pozostawić do pracy w tym momencie: w związku z tym potrzebny jest obowiązek bezpośrednich szczepień tak szybko, jak to możliwe – zanim ostatnia wskazówka uzasadnienia obowiązku szczepień naprawdę zniknie.

Nawiasem mówiąc, już w 2013 roku była żona Lauterbacha, Angela Spelsberg (która w rzeczywistości jest epidemiologiem, w przeciwieństwie do samego Lauterbacha), stwierdziła, że jego jedynym zainteresowaniem są prawdopodobnie pieniądze i kariera. Opinia publiczna przecenia jego moralność:

Zawsze publicznie stawia swoje sumienie społeczne na pierwszym planie. Prywatnie jednak poznałem go z zupełnie innej strony. Myślę, że to niepokojące, co dzieje się w jego głowie.

Oczywiście racjonalny obywatel Niemiec może się z tym wczuć. Podczas gdy niemiecki mainstream dokłada wszelkich starań, aby przedstawić Lauterbacha i jego patologiczny alarmizm jako jedyny prawdziwy głos rozsądku, epidemiolodzy tacy jak Spelsberg postrzegają jego mentalne wylewy dość krytycznie. Zapytana, dlaczego doszła do tak różnych wyników w ocenie ryzyka koronawirusa niż jej były mąż, Spelsberg już sucho stwierdziła w wywiadzie dla ServusTV w 2020 roku: "Ponieważ musisz zrozumieć rzemiosło".
