Saint Aebbe Cut Off Her Nose to Spite Her Face
If you’ve ever heard the saying “cut off your nose to spite your face,” have you ever wondered where it came from? Legend has it that Saint Aebbe, also known as Saint Ebba or Æbbe the Younger, was a pious woman who disfigured her face to protect her chastity from invading Vikings in the 9th century, giving birth to this famous saying in the process.
This bizarre English idiom is still in use even today, though its modern-day meaning has different connotations to the original. These days it is used to describe a self-destructive act or overreaction, usually motivated by anger or revenge, and whose ultimate consequence is to do more harm to oneself rather than the offending party.
Apparently, a group of Vikings, led by children of Ragnar Lothbrok, arrived on the shores of Scotland around 870, and ended up burning and sacking Coldingham. When Aebbe the Younger, the Abbess of Coldingham Priory on the southeast coast of Scotland, discovered they had arrived, she cut off her own nose in a desperate bid to avoid being raped by the invaders.
She was also said to have convinced the other nuns to cut off their noses. The sight encountered by the Vikings must have been truly hideous. Nevertheless, while they escaped forcible violation, their actions still irked their assailants who continued to burn down the convent. The nuns were killed in the flames. Their purity had been preserved but they ultimately came to an untimely demise. In some accounts, the day of their martyrdom is given as the 23rd of August.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These events were first recorded in Chronica Majora by the Benedictine monk Matthew Paris (circa 1200 to 1259), written over 300 years after the events actually took place. They also made an appearance within the Flores Historiarum , though it has remained impossible to prove, or disprove, these accounts for lack of archival evidence. It’s also impossible to know if this was truly the origin of the saying.
While it sounds like a truly horrific turn of events, nose mutilation was actually a pretty common form of punishment and torture throughout ancient world. Known as a rhinectomy, the removal of the nose was a type of corporal punishment in ancient Egypt, whereby the noses of certain criminals were cut off  as a permanent sign of their crimes and they were then banished to Rhinocolura. There are also accounts from the Persian Empire, ancient Greece, medieval Europe and pre-Columbian America.
According to Plutarch’s De Exilio, King Lysimachus of Thrace cut off the nose and ears of a subject who insulted his wife. He also gouged out his eyes to ensure the message was received loud and clear. Heracles in Thebes was given the nickname Rhinokoloustes, meaning “the nose-docker,” since he reportedly had the noses removed of all messengers sent by Orchomenos to demand tribute. Even the Old Testament recommended rhinectomies in the case of prostitution.

Random Thåström-clipping explained [1/?]:
PIMME CLOSE TO GETTING LYNCHED
Ouch-ouch-ouch! What have you done now Thåström??! The other night Joakim, not entirely unknown singer of Imperiet, was sitting in the pub Kvarnen on Söder in Stockholm and taking it easy. Kvarnen is the homebase on earth for all Hammarby[= a sports club]-fans and the tension was thick when Sportextra were about to show images from the Hammarby-game the same evening.
The minute before Sportextra is about to start, "Pimme" stands up and switches the channel. "I want to watch Filmkrönikan [The movie chronicle]", he declared. But in some instances it's of no help that you are a super-idol in Sweden. Agitated Bajen[Hammarby]-fans pushed Joakim down on his chair and switched back to the right channel. At Kvarnen Imperiet doesn't have many fans, we guess...
[Source: Frida magazine, 1986]
Context: I'll just add this quote from 1991
" 'I have Kvarnen as my regular haunt even though everyone knows I cheer for Djurgården [another Stockholm sports club]. But I guess I'm so cocky no-one kicks me out' - he laughs"
And also this quote from 1993:
"The last six months [of living in Amsterdam] wasn't very fun. I missed my mates, had to go home to Kvarnen at times and drink beer with people I really know, and have something to talk with about... about with... with about. Öh, check that up when you write..."
And lastly, this heartwarming photo of a Hammarbyare handing a thirsty Djurgårdare a beer mid-show [Photo: Tara Cohrs, 2022]:
Tumblr media
[I know this because the guy, sporting a Hammarby-shirt in his profile pic, commented saying: "I know you're not supposed to buy a Djurgårdare beer..😉 but of course with the exception 🙏🏻 of Sweden's rock-legend."]
Conclusion: Even though violence between supporters of the three major Stockholm sports teams wasn't uncommon, this is fake news, he was never in any real danger. Portraying him as something of a diva was the thing in 1986, though by the looks of it he was just being a lad for intricate sports guy respect reasons. The Ebba Grön legacy might have been working in his favour, a band considered neutral ground due to consisting of one supporter of each Stockholm team (Thåström-Djurgården, Gurra-Hammarby, Fjodor-AIK Solna). A diversity win, if you will.
But still, not everyone would have been tolerated and gotten away with such insolent behavior at Kvarnen, especially not a patron saint of the enemy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thåström-inspired Tifo's; 1st "This is every fool's day, we don't care about law and order" (Imperiet - Innan himlen faller ner) 2nd "Arm yourself with everything you long for and dream of" (Thåström - Beväpna dig med vingar)
Unnecessary fun fact: Among other ways of showing support for his team Thåström, together with LG Petrov of swedish death metal band Entombed, recorded the song Kommando Gösta Knivsta for the Djurgården tribute album "Blåränderna går aldrig ur" (1999). It's the little things that allow him getting away with fraternizing with the enemy so blatantly, I guess...

Saint of the Day – 23 June – St Etheldreda (c 636-679) Abbess and widow, an East Anglian princess, a Fenland and Northumbrian queen and Abbess of Ely – born in c 636 probably n Exning, near Newmarket in Suffolk, England.   She died on 23 June 679 of natural causes.   When her body was re-interred in 694 it was found to be incorrupt and again in 1106 when her relics were transferred to Ely Cathedral where her shrine now remains, her body was incorrupt.   Patronage – throat ailments, widows, neck ailments, th University of Cambridge.
Tumblr media
She was one of the four saintly daughters of Anna of East Anglia, including Wendreda and Seaxburh of Ely, all of whom eventually retired from secular life and founded abbeys.
Born and brought up in the fear of God-her mother and three sisters are numbered among the Saints – Etheldreda had but one aim in life, to devote herself to His service in the religious state.   Her parents, however, had other views for her and, in spite of her tears and prayers, she was compelled to become the wife of Tonbercht, a tributary of the Mercian king.   She lived with him as a virgin for three years and at his death retired to the Isle of Ely, that she might apply herself wholly to heavenly things.
Tumblr media
This happiness was but short-live,; for Egfrid, the powerful King of Northumbria, pressed his suit upon her with such eagerness that she was forced into a second marriage.   Her life at his court was that of an ascetic rather than a queen – she lived with him not as a wife but as a sister and, observing a scrupulous regularity of discipline, devoted her time to works of mercy and love.
After twelve years, she retired with her husband’s consent to Coldingham Abbey, which was then under the rule of St Ebba, and received the veil from the hands of St Wilfrid.  As soon as Etheldreda had left the court of her husband, he repented of having consented to her departure and followed her, meaning to bring her back by force.   She took refuge on a headland on the coast near Coldingham and here a miracle took place, for the waters forced themselves a passage round the hill, barring the further advance of Egfrid.

The Saint remained on this island refuge for seven days, till the king, recognising the divine will, agreed to leave her in peace.   God, who by a miracle confirmed the Saint’s vocation, will not fail us if, with a single heart, we elect for him.
In 672 she returned to Ely, and founded there a double monastery.   The nunnery she governed herself and was by her example a living rule of perfection to her sisters.
