1832 Nov., Tues. 13
9 10/..
11 35/..
Fine morning strong white frost – Fahrenheit 47º at 9 20/.. a.m. – Breakfast with my father and Marian at 9 1/4 in 3/4 hour – Then 1/4 hour with my aunt – Then Hinscliffe came about the coal at the top of the hill – 2 acres
Had heard Rawsons men in the upper or hard bed above them, so that they have been stealing my hard bed. Rawson’s water head hold points in a direction to Coley chapel – If not now they can soon get 100 yards breadth below the present waterhead driven by Oates and Green and Company –
Hinscliffe came to bid me the price given under the old lease £205 per acre. Said this would not do, for I had [given] the other applicants the 1st time of seeing them the price between the 2 leases (£205 and £230 per acre) i.e. £217.[pounds] 10. [shillings] 0. [pence] an acre and I did not intend to take less – H– [Hinscliffe] said that was an advance and he could not bit it without consulting his partners – I said I told him at once that I thought the other applicants could afford to give as much as H– [Hinscliffe] and company could, and that they seemed as if they did not intend to be outbid –
I added that  £217.[pounds] 10. [shillings] 0. [pence] was the price I 1st mentioned to them but that the other day, I had said as they did not agree at first, they would now find me rather worse to agree with and I had not pledged myself to take even £217.[pounds] 10. [shillings] 0. [pence]  per acre – Had had the coal (Lower bed) valued at £300 per acre –
Shewed H– [Hinscliffe] my calculation – (vide top of page 227) – He said they paid their banksmen 1/6 score (corves)  and that I had made no allowance for "straight work" (i.e. water heads and vents cutting, – Driving and preying away which he seemed to think would add to the expense 1 /. [shilling] a score –
‘Well!’ said I, ‘you see from my present calculation (page 277) the coal at 7 /. [shillings] clear per score = £423. [pounds] 10. [shillings] 0. [pence] per acre but 4840/4 yards or 1 acre = 1210 the no. [number] of scores per acre – Now 1210 sixpences additional for the banksman and 1210 shillings for straight work = £90. [pounds] 15. [shillings] 0. [pence] and £423. [pounds] 10. [shillings] 0. [pence]  - £90. [pounds] 15. [shillings] 0. [pence] = £332. [pounds] 15. [shillings] 0. [pence]’ and if H– [Hinscliffe] would, as he said, be content with £50 per acre profit then 332. [pounds] 15. [shillings] 0. [pence] - £50. [pounds] 0. [shillings] 0. [pence] = £282. [pounds] 15. [shillings] 0. [pence] the price I ought to have per acre according to his own shewing –
H– [Hinscliffe] owned that the Lower or soft bed in the upper bend was 18 inches thick, tho’ he said at first (but came round afterwards) that 5 corves per square yard was rather too much to reckon – He said too that there would be good 1/2 a corve a yard more § out of the soft bed in the low ground – The bed was prouder – I need not be afraid of more water coming this way – When Rawsons have got more coal 5 or 6 years hence, their coming down so much lower will send the water the other way –
Speaking of Lightcliffe coal, a good deal yet to get in those 2 fields near Lidgate – and the flashes belonging to Miss W– [Walker] bought of Dr. Alexander – Thinks the stone that comes out today at Knoll top is the 3 score yards quarry i.e. 60 yards above our hard or upper bed –
Just as I had written the above, at 1, came note from Miss W– [Walker] and Loudon’s encyclopedia of gardening and 2 volumes of Plutarch’s Lives with the parcel from Mr. Ainsley. She says,
‘I scarcely believed the parcel would come, but here it is and you will perceive carriage paid. You will do for me about this as you think best in returning it. I am better this morning thanks to you, my love, for it. My heart cannot give utterance to what it would say to you on this subject, but if I do recover my health I shall ascribe the blessing under the mercy of providence to you. Faithfully and affectionately yours AW [Ann Walker] –
What a difference between this note and the last! Went down to my aunt for a few minutes to shew the fine fine Miss W– [Walker] had sent her and off to Lidgate at 2 – Having first written the following to shew to Miss W[alker]
Lightcliffe Tues[day] 13, November eighteen hundred and 32
Sir, I am requested by Miss Walker to return the parcel unopened as it must have been sent off before your receipt of my letter of yesterday. I am Sir etc. etc. etc. A Lister (my usual signature) –
At Lidgate at 2 25/.. – Found them at dinner – Tête-à-tête with Miss W– [Walker] in the dining room from 2 3/4 for an hour – Then an hour with her and Miss Harriet Parkhill in the sitting room and home in 1/2 hour at 5 20/.. – Miss W[alker] looking good spirits and better. Sat on my knee. Kissed her every now and then but nothing more.
She said she could not express how grateful to me she felt. Shewed her what I had written to him, which she approved. She could not have believed he would have behaved so. Again said she used to feel affection for him but it seemed gone now. I cheered her up. Said she would be better and more able to judge by and by, and then she should try again.
I wonder what will be her feeling towards me six months hence? Will she let me leave her behind me? Yes, my own mind is quite reconciled to this. I seemed to have ceased to think of, or wish for her, as the future companion of my life. But we now get on better together than we have ever done before.
Made up the parcel for Mr. A[insworth]. Dinner at 6 10/.. wrote about 1 page of inquiries to Mr. L. Maclean about the basket of Willow cuttings sent off from Coll house by the maid of Morveu Steamer to Glasgow on Monday the 29th ultimo Miss L– [Lister] would be very much obliged to him to say if he had received the basket and by what coach he had forwarded them here (giving my address) mentioned the Glasgow London mail via Leeds as the best –
At 7 sent off by John my letter to "Mr. T. Maclean, 23 Argyle Street Glasgow. North Britain postage paid" and my note on letter to the "Reverend Thomas Ainsworth" enclosed in a parcel directed to the "Reverend Thomas Ainsworth, at Miss Bentley’s, 1 crescent, Salford, Manchester per mail Tuesday 13 November 1832" The parcel contained the drawing room scrapbook and the narrative sent to Miss W[alker] but unopened –
Above 1/2 hour in the other room and returned to the Drawing room at 8 1/4 – In the few minutes of being alone with Miss Parkhill she asked again if I had not heard of Miss Walker’s engagement. ‘No, the report had not reached me.’ Asked the gentleman's name. Well, if was a Mr. Fraser he died at Cheltenham. Must be true. She had heard it at Wakefield, and it came from his mother –
Poor Miss W[alker]. Her secrets are not well kept. But I wonder at Mrs. Fraser –
1/2 corve per square yard = 2 corves per score and there being 1210 scores in an acre ∴
2420 corves at 7 1/2 d [pence] = £75. [pounds] 12. [shillings] 6 [pence] throw off 1/2 this for expense then 75. [pounds] 12. [shillings] 6 [pence] = 37. [pounds 16. [shillings] 3 [pence]
∴ the coal in the low land is worth more by £37. [pounds 16. [shillings] 3 [pence] per acre than the same coal (Lower or soft bed) in the upper land – My uncle was aware of this greater value of the coal in the low land from his selling all pulled at Trough of Bolland slip-in pit at
£230 per acre and all pulled at the Willy hill pit at £205 per acre
Rawson sells upper bed at 7 d [pence] a corve and Lower bed at 8 d [pence] a corve –
1 6d [pence] a corve = 10 /. [shillings] a score
2 7d [pence]_______= 11/8. _______ [11 shillings/8 pence a score]
3 7 1/2d [pence]____= 12/6. _______[12 shillings/6 pence a score]
4 8d [pence]______= 13/4_______ [13 shillings/4 pence a score] throw off 1/2 for exp[ense] th[e]n one ac[re] or 1210 scores
1 at 5 /. [shillings] = £302. [pounds] 10. [shillings] 0 [pence]
2 –  5 /. [shillings] = £342. [pounds] 18. [shillings] 4 [pence]
3 –  6/3. [shillings/pence] = £378. [pounds] 2. [shillings] 6 [pence]
4 –  6/8. [shillings/pence] = £403. [pounds] 6. [shillings] 8 [pence]
∴ tak[in]g the coal at 7 1/2 a corve £378. [pounds] 2. [shillings] 6 [pence] – £250 = 128. [pounds] 2. [shillings] 6 [pence] profit to the purchaser at 8      [a corve] £403. [pounds] 6. [shillings] 8 [pence] – £250 = 153. [pounds] 6. [shillings] 8 [pence] [profit to the purchaser]
Had just calculated and written the above at 10 40/.. when after reading the Courier 10 minutes went to my room – Fine frost day – But very thick and hazy – Fahrenheit 45 1/º at 11 p.m. the Duchesse de Berri taken at last – Taken at Nantes –

1833 Tues. 26 March
6 35/.. 12 10/.. + + +L U U fine morning Fahrenheit 48º at 6 35/.. (ground covered with white ime) and 32º at 7 3/4 outside my window and regular snow - storm - had begun to snow a little at 7 1/2 - what a month of March! - spoke to John to get at Throps as many hollies as he thought good enough and 6 horse chesnuts, and 10 more yews - at my desk at 8 - and an hour making out clearly and arranging the bills of expenses of Mytholm mill to shew my father and ready for settling with George Robinson -
Breakfast at 9 5/.. in about an hour - books from Whitley’s - Ure's geology Scrope on Earthquakes and Digest of Bank Charter committee - looking into these till after 12 - then had Washington - Mr. Saltmarshe only pays 1 1/2 guineas a year and wants to give up the pew - very well - to be relet - all that W- [Washington] had to call upon want the pew rents lowering - very well - fiat - told W- about the coal agreement being off with Mr. R- [Rawson] merely said I was outwitted in saying we had agreed before the papers were actually signed - W- [Washington] thought Mr. R- [Rawson] had on the face of the deeds no sufficient reason to refuse signing
Then near an hour with my aunt till came upstairs at 1 35/.. then reading Ure's geology (could not resist) and read from page 196 to 313 end of Jesse's Gleanings in natural history and making notes and extracts from it till 5 1/2 - Had sent for George Robinson to come to settle our account, but he was gone to Manchester - John brought from Throp's this morning 10 more hollies and planted them in the hedge top of Trough of Bolland wood - ordered the 6 horse chesnuts and 10 more yews to come tomorrow - the latter to be at nurse in the garden - wrote all but the 3 first lines of today and ran out at 5 3/4 (my aunt quite better today) - an hour in my walk - two turns from end to end - but snowing large flakes or small or rain partly frozen (more or less) all the time - 1/4 hour in the hut during the heaviest of the snow - yet this fresh air did me good, and the exercise warmed my feet -
Home at 6 3/4 - changed my clothes - dinner at 7 - afterwards cut open and read attentively from page 88 to 105 Ure's geology Letter from Lady V.C - [Vere Cameron] Leghorn March 8 (went into the and Florence March 10 other room at 9 1/2) - 3 pp. [pages] and ends - Kind letter but tho received my last forwarded to florence finishes her letter in a hurry and takes no notice of my offer of sponsorship tho gives me leave to call her husband lochiel
The Camerons had been a week at Naples and gone from there (to same time!) to Leghorn by steam - instead of ten days  left N- [Naples] at 3 p.m. on Wednesday 6 and anchored off the harbor at Leghorn at 6 a.m. Friday the 8th instant - by the Francesco primo - very good vessel - going to Greece the middle of April for a 3 months tour if can get 50 subscribers at 85 guineas each - each to land at his own expense - 2 ladies going from Naples - did not supper at all from sickenings not economical of money but of time - should have vetturino'd it part of the way if they had gone by land -
3 days from Naples to Rome - then rest there one day for passport and business, and then 6 days from R- [Rome] to Florence per vetturino - N- [Naples]
'like an English watering place in point of society and dissipation - I saw a great deal of our little Paris Waller who is going out with Lord Ponsonby to Constantinople, I had the pleasure of talking of you' -
San Carlos closed - did not attempt Vesuvius 'and Donald had been up before'! saw Pompeii and Baiæ - 'this Leghorn is a nasty cold miserable place the wind whistle's round the house and we are going off to Pisa where the Ussero is said to be the best hotel in Italy, kept by 2 cidevant couriers' - they were not disappointed with it - beg me to note it down - think of leaving
'Florence the 18th which will bring us to Nice (by Lucca and Genoa) say the 30th - and I suppose at Paris by the 15th of April, do you recollect anything of consequence that happened on that day?'
no I forget all about it and not having my journal of that date can make nothing out - must look forward to see me in London in May - 'I think I shall be in and about it till the end of July, when if all goes well I shall hope to be well enough to remove regularly into the country' - finds Florence very cold - large comfortless rooms at 'Les quatre nations' recommended as the best hotel - Schneiders said to be fallen off - more doubts and difficulties than ever with her brother Lord B and his attorney Mr. Jones about the bond for her money in Lord Bs hands  'it is a very great worry to me' - Read the courier - came to my room at 10 40/.. at which hour Fahrenheit 46º - very winterly day - rain and snow - but the latter gone as soon as come - wrote the last 24 lines till 11 1/4 -

The Bakers union (BFAWU), War on Want and Unite are leading a UK campaign for workers’ rights and ending poverty pay, with demonstration due to hit cities this Thursday.

They won a ten-year record pay rise. On 1st May 2018 – International Workers Day – workers at five McDonald’s stores also went out on strike.

App-based local food delivery service for convenience stores expands across the UK
Tumblr media
Grocemania: linking shoppers to convenience stores with mobile
Grocemania, an app-based delivery service for the convenience grocery sector, is to expand across the UK as demand for food delivery from small local stores grows.
The on-demand grocery delivery, which launched in 2017 in London, enables shoppers to get groceries delivered to their door by courier, on the same day that they order, from their local convenience store.
To make its service possible, the company has partnered with hundreds of small stores across the UK, working with Budgens, Nisa, Londis and Costcutter, as well as numerous independent retailers. It is now planning to expand with this network from the capital to Brighton, Bristol, Newcastle, Birmingham and Manchester by July 2020, with more regions to follow.
Grocemania also offers next-day delivery across the UK of fresh produce boxes from New Covent Garden Market.
Askar Bulegenov, founder and director of Grocemania, says: “The food delivery sector has seen huge growth over recent years, and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated this trend. However, with large supermarkets unable to meet soaring demand for home deliveries, consumers across the UK – particularly vulnerable people and NHS staff – need more options.
He adds: “Grocemania is answering the call. We are supporting both local businesses and the British public by making hundreds of grocery deliveries every day. What’s more, we’re delighted to be expanding our fast, convenient grocery delivery services into new regions across the UK, helping to connect the consumer to the high street during the lockdown.”

The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Monday 29th January 2018
Hello, Good Morning and Welcome….  With the inevitability of the Julian calendar, Monday has rolled around once more and we prepare ourselves for another working week…For me, my life is no different than when I worked  for my company, but the sign on the door says, “Retired” which translates to past it, and effectively means, that no company will consider you for employment, so you are supposed to get up late, have a lazy day… because you earned it … I think that is the way to an early grave, I remain active, both physical and mentally, walking Bella, writing The Thistle and The Tulip and many other articles, it all keeps the body and the mind active,
APPEAL AFTER HIGH-VALUE PAINTINGS STOLEN IN MIDLOTHIAN…. Two high-value paintings have been stolen from a house in Midlothian. The works by Scottish artists were taken from a home in the Eskbank area of Dalkeith between Tuesday 17 October and Thursday 19 October last year, but details have just been released. Police said the thieves gained access to the property and took the paintings which hold sentimental value to the owner. Both paintings are original pieces and are forensically marked. The first is a picture of fish entitled "The Maverick" by artist Gordon Mitchell and the second is "The Lady with the Skate" by John Bellany. Officers are asking anyone with information to come forward. PC Emily Dalgetty from Musselburgh Police Station said: "These pieces of art have huge sentimental value to the owner and we are keen to trace those responsible for their theft. "I would ask anyone who has seen, or been offered these paintings, to contact us as soon as possible."
GLASGOW CITY CENTRE IS ONE OF UK'S POOREST AREAS…. Glasgow is among the UK's poorest constituencies, according to a new report. The End Child Poverty Coalition, made up of charities, faith groups and trade unions, said that 45% of children in the city centre were living in poverty. Glasgow Central appears 12th on a list of 20 constituencies, which is otherwise dominated by communities in London, Birmingham and Manchester. West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine had the fewest children in poverty at 9.2%. The Coalition calculated the number of children in poverty using a combination of HMRC data and a Labour Force Survey. A child was classed as poor if their family had less than £248 a week to spend after housing costs. That amount is less than 60% of median household income in the UK. Across Scottish constituencies, the organisation found that just under a third of children in North Ayrshire (29%) and Dundee (28%) were living in poverty. Other areas, such as North Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire, Inverclyde, West Dunbartonshire and Clackmannanshire had a quarter of children in poverty.
MOBILE CINEMA OPERATOR SECURES KEY FUNDING…. The operator of the UK's only full-time, self-contained mobile cinema has secured the funding it needs to run its programme for the next three years. Regional Screen Scotland (RSS) said Creative Scotland intends to provide it with a total grant of £620,350 for April 2018 to March 2021. Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) will also give a total of £75,000 over the same period. RSS operates the mobile cinema the Screen Machine. The service was originally started in 1998. The current vehicle, which has been in use since 2005, was fully refurbished last year. The cinema tours the Highlands, Inner and Outer Hebrides and Northern Isles. RSS said: "We're delighted that the continuing success of the Screen Machine, which visited 51 different locations in the last year, has been so firmly endorsed by our two key funders."
TRAIN COULD BE MOVED AFTER LANDSLIP ON WEST HIGHLAND LINE…. NetworkRail Scotland said it could soon be possible to move a train that was caught up in a landslip on the West Highland Line on Monday. Five passengers were on board when the train came off the track early on Monday morning. No-one was injured. The line is blocked at Loch Eilt between Arisaig and Glenfinnan and the ScotRail Alliance has said Fort William-Mallaig services will be suspended until further notice. Engineers from NetworkRail Scotland are clearing tonnes of material to free the train and clear the line. A spokesman for the company said: "Works on site are progressing well. "Yesterday the team drained standing water from around the derailed vehicle and began to dig out the mud surrounding it. "Today we will complete the removal of the landslip material from around the train and then re-rail it. If possible we may move the train today, but that may not happen until tomorrow." He added: "In the days after that, we'll repair damage to the track and carry out further works to secure the slope."
UNTAXED CAR CATCHES OUT CANNABIS COURIERS…. Two men were caught with almost £30,000 worth of cannabis after using an untaxed car to transport the drug, a court heard. Kieran Teasdale and Jacob Simpson were pulled over by police after a routine computer check showed that their vehicle had not been taxed. Officers noticed a "strong smell of cannabis" coming from the car when its window was wound down. Both men were jailed for 19 months at Perth Sheriff Court. Depute fiscal Michael Sweeney told the court that the total weight of the cannabis was almost 2kg and it had a potential street value of £29,000. The court was told that the chance discovery was made because Simpson had "stupidly" decided to use an untaxed car to drive the cannabis from Bradford to Aberdeen. Simpson, 27, and Teasdale, 24, both from Bradford, had earlier admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis on the M90 on the outskirts of Perth in April 2016.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is by.. Morris Macleod … There's been some tricky driving conditions across Scotland this week. Even Morris Macleod encountered a road block on the Pentland Road in Lewis.
Tumblr media
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Monday 29th January 2018 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in
Be safe out there…

Door to door removals services UK
Why door-to-door service is more important than ever
Door-to-door delivery consists of collecting goods from one location and delivering them to another. The carrier manages the process from the shipper's warehouse until the goods are delivered to the buyer.
This is different from door-to-port or port-to-port delivery. Courier starts and ends at a specific address.
Throughout the delivery process, packages are picked up and delivered through customs. There are several ways your business can benefit from door-to-door services.
 Benefits of door-to-door service
With Door to door removals services UK, you can experience a more streamlined courier service. You and your customers will benefit from transparent rates, additional time and even improved quality of service!
No additional charge
As a business owner, you are always looking for ways to save money. Standard shipping charges usually cover only the price for transferring shipments from one point to another. This does not take into account any charges associated with customs, taxes, or surprise charges incurred along the route. Door-to-door service offers transparent pricing and you get what you pay for.
With Door to door removals services in Bolton, you don't have to worry about the hassle of the delivery process. You can be confident that your parcel will arrive at no additional charges in the future.
 Save time
You can also save valuable time by hiring a Door to door removals services in Manchester. Please think about it. When you sign a contract with a door-to-door dealer, your job is done. You don't have to be involved in packing, shipping, tracking, or unloading. Everything is taken care of by you.
Most providers make it easy to quote and book online. This saves you the hassle associated with pick-up and delivery schedules.
Improve service quality
As a merchant, the way your product is delivered is an important measure of quality of service.
Your customers rely on you to receive their shipment on time and as described. You need to be able to trust the suppliers who can transport your products quickly and safely.
Delivering orders through door-to-door distributors streamlines the delivery process, reduces costs, and improves order fulfillment.
 Hassle-free customs clearance procedure
Don't take the hassle-free customs experience for granted. When importing international products, you need to know if the products require clearance. Customs clearance is required whenever cargo is imported into the other country.
Same day courier service Bolton will check your documents and assist you in customs clearance without your assistance. The supplier also pays the fees detailed in your contract when you make a reservation.
 Optimized delivery
Processing multiple deliveries can be confusing and lead to lost items. Same day courier service in uk simplifies complex processes. Empty shipping containers are shipped to the loading dock where the cargo is fixed. All required documents will be edited before shipping the cargo. Goods are shipped internationally or domestically. The delivery then arrives safely at its final destination. This is a proven and true process that many traders rely on a daily basis.
Same day courier service London sales are the easiest choice when it comes to shipping options. Your work ends when the cargo leaves your location or warehouse. Everything else depends on the provider of your choice.

Factors to Consider When Opting for a Same Day Courier Service
Tumblr media
There are a variety of courier services that you are able to see in the market. But if you are after time and punctuality then see to it that you will be opting for a same-day courier. It is common for parcels to be delivered two to three days right after you have ordered them. Once you will be choosing to have the same day courier service though then they are the ones that can provide you with same-day delivery.
In order to help clients send quick parcels and send parcels in the quickest time possible then it is the same day courier that existed. The one that greatly benefits this one are the clients that will need to have their parcels on the very same day. Once it is you that will be choosing a same-day courier then it is them that can provide you with efficiency and value for money. Compared to the order entry ones, it is the same day delivery service that will have a higher cost. It is this one though that is not a factor for people that really need the service. Some of the clients that can benefit from this kind of service are the solicitors in court cases and medical practitioners.
It is also the small to medium companies that will be able to benefit greatly from this one. These companies usually have short deadlines and that is why it is important that the items that they are selling will be delivered efficiently. It is still the courier service that all plays an important role when it comes to delivering parcels even though communication has gone a long way. If a business needs to deliver items in the most timely, secure and efficient manner then they will have to opt for the same day courier Manchester to London services. Regardless of the premium that you have to pay for this service, it is this one that you will have to grab.
Improving the services that they are offering is a thing that many same-day courier services have done. It is you that can see companies that are already implementing new tracking solutions. And it is this one that adds value to the client's experience. Once you take a look at these solutions then it is also able to streamline parcel booking and allocation. And it is also this one that makes the services that they are offering more efficient. And that is why it is the clients that will find it easy to place an order and track consignments.  For more information, click on this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casual_courier.

17 Jun 2019: The struggle for collection and delivery, and capturing all of the spend
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter - it looks at what's happening in the internet/digital world and how it's relevant to the Co-op, to retail businesses, and most importantly to people, communities and society. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!
Tumblr media
The struggle for collection and delivery
FedEx is to end its US express business With Amazon (and surprisingly Amazon is only 1.3% of FedEx revenue). The problem with being both vertically and horizontally integrated is that eventually your partners feel like you’re competing too directly with them. You’d imagine that retailers using AWS sometimes have similar concerns.
Click and collect is becoming increasingly important for physical retail. In the US they call it BOPIS/BOSS - buy online pickup in-store/buy online ship-to-store.
Walmart offers fewer items for next-day delivery compared to Amazon because it’s expensive - 200k items vs 10m. And Target is expanding same-day delivery options - 65k items (it bought deliveryco Shipt in 2017). From that last link:
“Ironically, same-day delivery is somewhat easier for retailers to achieve than one-day shipping since same-day services generally rely on couriers and the gig economy to move orders - through providers like Shipt, Deliv, Roadie, Instacart and the like - and not traditional 3PLs.”
That said, delivery remains a hard business, particularly if it’s meals and fresh food: there’s plenty of competition - Deliveroo and JustEat lead in EU, and Uber, Grubhub and fast-growing DoorDash in US. And Amazon’s Restaurants food delivery service being switched off in the US, and it was shuttered in London in late 2018. (Amazon recently invested in Deliveroo, so that looks like its plan B for the meal delivery market.)
The interesting thing here is Amazon’s endless willingness to experiment and invest further if it works or kill it off if it isn’t - a practice all retailers should keep an eye on in an era of rapid technology change.
Capturing all of the spend
You’ll remember all of those “1 in 8 pounds is spent in Tescos” stories of a few years ago [1]. Anyway: GlobalData reckons Amazon will have 20% of all UK online spend in 2024 (also 19.4% of UK online shoppers are now Prime subscribers).
Walmart Grocery is now offering a $98 per year ‘Delivery Unlimited’ subscription - which will compete head-on with Amazon Prime Now, Instacart and others.
In the meantime, this fight between Walmart and Amazon is creating collateral damage for smaller retailers. That piece says that retailers in differentiated product categories (like dollar stores) or “perfected business models” (such as Best Buy and Costco) are doing OK but retailers with shakier finances "have ever-diminishing control over their destiny [...] for the many other retailers, the best strategy could be to try and stay out of the way of this bigger battle."
[1] Even though those stories have receded a bit in the last decade as supermarkets became more competitive and new, low-cost entrants thrived in the UK, Tesco still seems to take 1 in 6.66 of the UK’s retail pounds: 63.9bn in sales in 12 month to end Feb 19 vs ONS estimate of total retail Mar 18 - Feb 19 of 425.9bn.
China news
Why Chinese shoppers buy fresh groceries online: convenience and comfort.
Alipay (Alibaba’s payment platform) has tripled its number of merchant customers in Europe - largely driven by Chinese tourism? Alipay says it has about 1bn active users worldwide now.
As the trade conflict between China and the United States escalates, there are signals that China might restrict the export of rare earth minerals to the US. (Rare earths are used in electronics.)
Tencent invests in UK fintech TrueLayer, which provides banking APIs etc.
Stats
Mary Meeker’s annual internet trends presentation is always a beast of a read - chock full of numbers. Maybe the meta-trend is that as software gets into everything, and nearly everything gets internet connected, it becomes clearer how the internet amplifies everything. The good and the bad. Technology is never neutral, but it is frequently indifferent.
More than a fifth of smart speaker owners have made a purchase online, only 13% would class themselves as regular users - trying it out once?
Only 17% of UK shoppers have used social media buy buttons and a third claim they never will - trying it out never?
Other news
Consequence scanning looks interesting: “a way for organisations to consider the potential consequences of their product or service on people and society and provides an opportunity to mitigate or address potential harms or disasters before they happen”.
Neobank Monzo is launching in the US.
Co-op Bank (which is no longer part of the Co-op Group) is hiring 100 IT/digital staff.
Should Alexa give evidence in German courts? - obvious law enforcement vs privacy tradeoffs.
A grocer designed embarrassing plastic bags to shame shoppers into bringing reusable ones, but they were an unexpected hit.
