Originally, The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton were given dialogue in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1978). However, since Frampton had a British accent and The Bee Gees were Australian, their accents were not in line with a movie taking place in middle America, it was decided that they would do away with all dialogue, and use George Burns' role as narrator to supply the dialogue for all the characters.
Frampton wanted to get on the trampoline during "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." It wasn't allowed because he wasn't insured.
During the filming of Strawberry Fields' funeral, Frampton forced himself to cry by thinking of the then-recent Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash that claimed the lives of several friends and associates.
The shooting script called for Frampton's character to kill Steven Tyler's. When it came time to film this scene, Aerosmith threatened to walk out. "There's no f*cking way that Steven is gonna get directly offed by Frampton," commented Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. "It's gotta be an accident, the way it was in the original script we f*cking agreed to." They finally agreed to a compromise, with Sandy Farina's character Strawberry Fields accidentally pushing Tyler's character to his death. (IMDb)
Happy Birthday, Peter Frampton!

Sandy Saturday's #4:
Fairport Convention's Suzanne
Tumblr media
There was nothing wrong with Fairport Convention in the Spring of 1968. They had the best lead guitar player in England, plus two skillful singers, an oddball but talented bass player and a rock steady rhythm guitarist and drummer. They weren't The Beatles or The Stones, but they knew what they were doing and they did it well.
Only two ingredients were missing: songwriting chops and a lead singer who could truly front the band.
The first problem was a significant one; Richard Thompson, who would soon become transcendent in the songwriting department, was still about 14 years old (okay, he was actually 18, but you get the idea) and he leaned on random roommates to write his lyrics. And no one else in the band showed any real songwriting promise.
But in 1968 you did not need to write your own songs. You just followed Judy Collins lead and let Dylan write your songs for you, along with Richard Farina and a very precocious Leonard Cohen. Witness the band's version of Suzanne:
youtube
There's plenty to be said for this version: the band's female vocalist, Judy Dyble, sits it out and lets the strident and angelic Ian Matthews carry the lyric (Dyble would bring her knitting on stage at this point and darn away whenever she wasn't needed). And Richard Thompson's brooding, harsh solos, whenever the choked off electric rhythm gives him room, are something to behold. You want to take him with you, and you want to take him blind...
But the track is not yet timeless. Something is missing. And that something is Sandy Denny.
Go ahead on this Sandy Saturday; lean into the band's version of Suzanne just a few months later when Dyble had been given the knitted boot and Denny had stepped up to claim the band as her own.
Matthews still carries the opening verse, yes, and the original arrangement remains in place. But now, the moment Ian's novelties begin to wear thin, we've got Denny gliding in for the second verse, and there she is alongside Matthews in the final verse as well. Sandy quavers with power and understatement throughout, commanding Matthews to raise his game a giant step. She glows within the track and turns it into big deal art. I trust her perfection with my mind.
youtube
Note the constraint Thompson brings to this later take; he knows he no longer needs to solo under the vocals; he knows he now had a peer in the band, someone to write songs alongside; someone to try and live up to. Like any other sensible male (paging Stephen Stills; Stephen Stills please get a clue), he knows he's stronger when deferring to a true peer.

REVIEW: Tipps and Obermiller “MacGuffin” @tippsandobermiller #johnapice @americanahighways #americanamusic #newmusic2024 #macguffin #americanahighways
Tipps and Obermiller – MacGuffin This is a brightly recorded album with some folky pop elements ala Lowen & Navarro. The songs have a balanced contrast between gender vocals keeping it interesting throughout. But what I found most attractive is Hilary Tipps’s lead vocal with its clarity & depth like the best female folk singers of the past from Joan Baez & Mimi Farina to Sandy Denny with the…

Dress-up Dress-down (+Lucina)
A ritzy butler arrives with a job offer for trustworthy individuals that can handle a bit of responsibility. Their masters will be traveling with their son on his Grand Tour of Fódlan, leaving their luxurious coastal villa in Derdriu unattended. If you could protect their property from opportunistic thieves, you’ll find this family… well, actually, the pay isn’t all that great, but beachside accommodations are practically impossible to find in Derdriu, never mind at the start of their tourist season. This is a chance to let your hair down and have fun… just make sure to put everything back where you found it!
♠  ~ Farina had never thought she'd end up so bored out of her mind at what, uh, basically amounted to a beach resort. Great food. Sandy beaches. A good amount of splishing and splashing. Those were the sorts of things she'd expected she'd be doing. Oh, you know, some good old fun in the sun.
Then again, it wasn't as if she'd came prepared for fun. She blamed that butler for the misunderstanding. For his urgency, you'd think he 'd received something threatening and needed some extra muscle in a hurry. But, nope. Apparently, his bosses were going on a road trip and just needed someone to watch their house.
Well, she didn't know that back then and she'd thought it was about something serious. And as a serious mercenary who took her job seriously, Farina had decided it would have been bad form to present herself to an employer unprofessionally. Coming prepared for a vacation would definitely have been oh so unprofessional.
Hence, why she was now raiding her nominal employer's their dressing room. What? She was at the beach. There wasn't any pressing emergency and she was in the mood for some fun. And any good fun in the sun will need a swimsuit, which she'd, uh, neglected to pack. Out of the mistaken belief that this job was going to be a lot more serious than it was turning out to be.
And besides, this room was huge. Bigger than her house, even. The one back in Ilia. That she was sharing with both of her sisters. So, in other words, it was huge. And full of row after row of absolutely cute outfits that she could only dream of actually owning. What? Even she could indulge in her girly side too. And, so far as as she was concerned, there was nothing girlier than dressing up in cute outfits. Especially cute swimsuits.
Turning to face a large dressing room mirror nearby, the mercenary spun to show off her new, uh, freshly borrowed outfit. Frilly and with a nice sets of heeled sandals and umbrella to go along with. Not entirely her thing. Actually, it had felt like it would suit Fiora a whole lot better. Oh, she could just imagine. But it'll do on her. Certainly far fancier than anything she could have brought along with her.
A series of soft footsteps outside interrupted her self-centred preening, prompting Farina to turn to peer outside. Oh, she hadn't ended up picking up this job alone. There was a student who came with. A blue-haired Black Eagle, who, uh, seemed to be staring at her with a quizzical look. As if she wasn't quite sure what she was seeing. Seemingly undeterred by her partner’s look of confusion, Farina simply reached out to tug the Black Eagle inside. "Oh, nice timing!", she grinned. "Oh, c'mon! Ya gotta try some of these swimsuits too!" What? It wasn't everyday that you got the chance to try out something this fancy. May as well make the most of it, right?

REVIEW: Upstate “You Only Get A Few”
REVIEW: Upstate “You Only Get A Few” @upstatelovesyou #JohnApice #youonlygetafew #americanahighways
Upstate – You Only Get A Few A sublime collection of atmospheric melodies inhabit Upstate’s 10-cut collection that kicks off with “Lovers & Friends,” — structurally in an early 70s folky airy traditional nature (think Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny). This particular tune is catchy & recalls some work that was done in the mid-60s by Richard & Mimi Farina. Photo: Bridget Badore There is a…
