Rather than focusing on the development of two or three main characters, it seems like Mahesh Bhatt wanted every character to have a backstory, ranging from a one-armed gangster Dilip Hathkaata (Gulshan Grover) to a corrupt police officer Rajesh (Mohan Kapoor).
#Sanjay dutt gandhi movie cast movie#
Apart from the histrionic family drama, the pseudo satanic rituals portrayed in the movie were straight from the Greek tragedies, not to mention the dead wife’s ghost gracing her presence when Ravi was in trouble. No matter how interesting and watchable it sounds, the movie quickly went on the road of rack and ruin with its melodramatic elements including ‘maa ki aakhri icchaa’, ‘pehli nazar wala pyaar’, ‘paisa ka bhuka baap’, who would do anything, even killing his own daughter. The movie revolves around the lives of these characters, especially Aarya and Ravi, who form a deep father-daughter relationship with the progress of the film, as both of them had lost a loved one. Ravi (Sanjay Dutt), is suffering from an existential crisis and has developed a nihilistic attitude after losing his wife Pooja (Pooja Bhatt). Vishal/Munna (Aditya Roy Kapur), is Aarya’s boyfriend with a dark past of his own. Aarya (Alia Bhatt), is the leader of a community fighting against this imposter as she believes that her mother died because of him. The entire film has a dark and melancholic setting with Gyaan Prakash (Makarand Deshpande) a ‘fake baba’, luring people to him by asserting his connection with the divine. It seems that with the ongoing issues of nepotism, Sadak 2 with its star-kids had to bear the brunt. The overwhelmingly negative reviews that the film received within hours after its release was quite expected as its trailer had already become the second most disliked video on YouTube. The movie was released on 28 August 2020 on the OTT platform Disney+Hotstar. It seems like the writers Mahesh Bhatt and Suhrita Sengupta attempted to drive its audience onto the 90s road, but ended up somehow at a rehashed cul-de-sac. Sadak 2 with its most exciting star cast, from Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur to Jisshu Sengupta and their commendable performances, went downhill due to its banal plotline and dramatic dialogues. The Kaisi Ye Yaariyaan fame actor also shared the announcement video with an excitement-filled caption that reads, "Announcement …and it had to be a Big one yes…Dreams do come true and presents GHUDCHADHI (sic).Sadak 2 now streaming on Disney+Hotstar Mahesh Bhatt’s first directorial venture since 1999 turns out, perhaps, to be his last, at least for some years to come now. Dutt shared the latest video via his official Instagram handle and mentioned in the caption that he is all set to bring the laughter, drama with a fun-packed movie. The teaser shows the latest montage that features the name of the main cast and crew in the movie. Now, after the announcement, Sanjay has shared an intriguing teaser while announcing the beginning of the shooting. The script is penned by Deepak Kapur Bhardwaj & Binoy Gandhi.

This Binoy Gandhi directorial seems to be a rollercoaster ride full of fun, romance, and drama. T-Series and Keep Dreaming Pictures’ upcoming romantic comedy-drama Ghudhchadi directed by Binoy Gandhi has commenced shooting in Jaipur.Īlongside the two versatile actors, the film also features Khushalii Kumar and Parth Samthaan. After sharing a picture from the sets of the film, Sanjay shared the teaser of the upcoming film on Instagram. Actor Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon are all set to bring back the 90’s era again with their next film Ghudchadi which went on floors recently.

For the uninitiated, KGF Chapter 2 is a follow-up of the Kannada blockbuster KGF: Chapter 1, which starred Kannada star Yash with Tamannaah Bhatia and Ananth Nag, and released last year in December.
Sanjay Dutt will essay the role of the villain in the film named Adheera. Raveena Tandon will also be playing a crucial role in the movie. The actress may be seen stepping into the shoes of the first and only female Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Moreover, there will be a connection between her character and that of Sanjay Dutt’s.
KGF Chapter 2 is scheduled to hit the screens in 2020, however, the makers have not revealed its date. The cast of the first film will also return and the sequel, like chapter one, is directed by Prashant Neel

This Is the Reason Modi will win the war protesters have waged against him CAA

This Is the Reason Modi will win the war protesters have waged against him CAA
Since skirmishes and conflagrations split there's a lot of unnecessary human suffering. Damage to public land. Regular life caused a standstill. Regrettably, in the present atmosphere, all over the country there's more smoke than light. The confusion appears worse confound even one of the best-informed. However, if anybody is in doubt what these disturbances are all around, I'd ask them to only look at a societal networking hashtag which has been trending -- #IndiaHatesModi. It's filled with this bile and loathing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that anger within the newly passed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is left. Here is a good illustration from a renowned journalist: "It appears @narendramodi has started a war on India. Let's see if he survives or India!" This message has been appended to the hashtag #CAA_NRC_Protest.
Tumblr media
This Is the Reason Modi will win the war protesters have waged against him CAA As is evident, it isn't that Modi has announced that the war on India. Rather a little part of well-organized Modi-haters has declared war on Narendrabhai. Obviously, some well-meaning protesters that have united in are exempt from this fee. Maybe, they do not despise Modi just as much. I am referring to segments of this childhood. However, the movies flaunting young protesters from the CAA just illustrate how ill-informed this significant section of the society is. Having educated young adults all of my life, I am aware they are in favor of everything great and seemingly idealistic. Truth, justice, equality, minority asserts LGBT rights, etc. And why don't you? What is the purpose of being youthful but cynical or despairing about the future of India let alone individual ailment? But these exact same young folks do not understand the first easy thing concerning the CAA. It isn't about disenfranchising any citizen of India. It's all about granting citizenship. To whom? The Act is all about giving, not taking away citizenship. What about those excluded from its purview, specifically Muslims? There are three or more Islamic nations in our area --Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. The CAA is for all those people who have nowhere but India to flip to. Are there any no persecuted minorities in Islam? The Ahmadiyyas of Pakistan is just one example. They've been beaten, abused, mistreated, hounded, differently concentrated, and frequently charged with blasphemy, a capital offense in Pakistan. Their possessions destroyed, stores burned off, even their graves vandalized. In the event, the Ahmadiyyas, for example, also get refuge from India? Yes, they could. Even under present citizenship legislation. However, they wouldn't obtain the five decades' relief given to additional communities--Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, and Parsis. The CAA doesn't debar Muslims from getting Indian citizens if they're religious refugees. They'd be still be covered by existing provisions of the citizenship legislation. People who believe this unfair ought to move an amendment to the CAA in Parliament instead of burning off buses on the roads. Sad to say, the actors and Bollywood celebrities from CAA, though both ill-informed, aren't as innocent as a portion of our childhood. Some have posted fake videos and pictures. Besides revealing unauthorized maps of India with no Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Chinese-occupied Aksai Chin. Not one of these, furthermore, seems to have read the Citizenship Amendment Act correctly. The CAA is just part of what the protests are actually about. This really is against Modi. Along with also his sarkar. When there's something which unites protesters throughout celebration, caste, religious, linguistic, or cultural lines it's Modi-hatred. That borders on the absurd and pathological. However, as our religious masters have cautioned us, too much abuse is self-corrosive. Modi-haters will also be united by the rights they've lost. The new India he attempts to usher in is completely threatening and alarming to Modi-haters. What troubles them about Modi's thought of India? It's merely 1 thing. This type of consolidation, as we've observed in the past ten years or longer, has got the capacity to alter the dynamics of Indian politics which its erstwhile post-Independence rulers are currently fighting for their own survival. These include caste satraps, agents of backwardness, Muslim bullies and rabble-rousers, regional feudalists, dynasts of stripes. As I was composing this, #IndiaHatesModi was overtaken by #RamlilaMaidan. The latter pushed beyond 50k tweets in hours of Prime Minister Modi's speech. So much for creating a lot of social networking tendencies. Prime Minister Modi has struck back against his detractors. An unholy and unruly combination of"urban Naxals", jihadists, negative Ambedkarites, etc --all backed by disgruntled opposition leaders and parties. Obviously, he also reminded people that it's the exact same Modi sarkar that's going to regularise unauthorized colonies in Delhi. If that's the case, how is it accused of being anti-people? Everybody who lives here has been craved. Why did we do so? Since we live for the love of the nation. Listening to me, I'm almost tempted to say that the war against Modi much more looks like a match. And he's winning this round also. Exclusive! It was a difficult character to portray: Raveena Tandon on playing a Prime Minister in Yash’s ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ - Times of India
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/exclusive-it-was-a-difficult-character-to-portray-raveena-tandon-on-playing-a-prime-minister-in-yashs-kgf-chapter-2-times-of-india/
Exclusive! It was a difficult character to portray: Raveena Tandon on playing a Prime Minister in Yash’s ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ - Times of India
The gorgeous Raveena Tandon had a fun live chat with Bombay Times yesterday and there were things we couldn’t help thinking about. The actress spoke about the ongoing threat of the Coronavirus pandemic, singer Kanika Kapoor being tested positive for the virus, still waiting to work with Shah Rukh Khan on the big screen and about her second Kannada film ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ starring Yash.
On March 3, we had reported that the film was on the verge of a wrap. Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon and Srinidhi Shetty had reportedly finished shooting their parts and the movie was almost ready to go into post-production. In the film, while Sanjay plays Adheera, Raveena will be seen as Prime Minister Ramika Sen.
When Raveena was asked about her experience of shooting for the Yash-starrer, she said, “This is my nineth or tenth South film and my second Kannad movie. However, it is more of a pan-India film because it is releasing in all languages. It was something that really excited me because I have not played a character like what I’ve played in this film. She is positively great. It was a character that was very difficult to play because you couldn’t exactly be the villain of the story because you are also a positive character. I am playing the Prime Minister in the movie. Everyone says it is a take-off on Indira Gandhi, but no, it is not. It talks of the 70s and 80s and I think that is why everyone is assuming that I am playing a role similar to Ms Gandhi. I could be Sheikh Haseena for all you know!”
Further talking about her experience of shooting with the cast and crew of ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, Raveena said, “It was a pleasure shooting with Prashanth (Neel) and Yash. They are such wonderful guys and such a wonderful unit. I love shooting in the South and I’m looking forward to ‘KGF’ as much as you are.” When asked if fans can expect to see her reunite opposite Sanjay Dutt on the big screen with this film, Raveena said, “We are not together in this movie opposite each other. It is very exciting, but I don’t think I can reveal that much about the film.”
Yash’s ‘KGF: Chapter 1’ came at the end of the year 2018 and rocked Indian cinema altogether. Its rawness caught the eye of the audience all over the world and Yash’s fan-base increased enormously. After this, when the sequel to the film was announced, fans couldn’t wait for it to start rolling and their happiness knew no bounds when the makers revealed that Bollywood stars Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon too had been roped in for ‘KGF: Chapter 2’.
Now, with various states in the country shutting theatres, this is a good time for the makers to finish the post-production work of the film while the lockdown continues. By the time we overcome the Coronavirus pandemic, hopefully, ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ will be ready for release as well.

Seriously Funny: 10 greatest Bollywood comedies to watch before you die

If you are looking for a good laugh today, you have come to the right place. Indian Express Entertainment is compiling a list of 100 Bollywood movies to watch before you die, hoping to throw fresh light and perspective on them. We will explore one genre at a time, published every month with 10 films representing the said genre. This November, we kick off the series with comedy.
Comedy is a communal hug – a “jaadu ki jhappi” as Raju Hirani’s Munnabhai would have it – that Bollywood has churned out in the best of times and bleakest of times. When Hindi cinema is at its inspired high watermark madness, it can be a lot of fun – both for the audiences and filmmakers and crew behind the making of the film. Thinking of Half Ticket, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro or Andaz Apna Apna, one often wonders if the cast and crew had as much fun making them as we had watching them. But in many cases, we do know that it was not all play and party on the sets. Ask anyone and they will vouch for Kishore Kumar’s vaudevillian genius. That’s never in doubt. But Half Ticket’s loveable delinquent was, by most accounts, a rather difficult and eccentric person who kicked up a fuss when his payment failed to arrive. Stories of his stinginess abound. One popular and peculiar story goes that a producer had paid him only half his due. So, Kishoreda showed up on the sets with half head and half moustache shaved off and half intact! Moral of the story: he is fun to see on screen, not so fun to work with.
Take 1983’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, a madhouse of talent. Never before have such an incredible bunch of gifted heavyweights (to be fair, they were lightweights back then) – Kundan Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Bhakti Barve, Ravi Baswani, Naseeruddin Shah and Satish Shah to name a few – have come together in the making of a Bollywood comedy. But Shah punctured the film’s off-screen myths when he said the making was “a bloody nightmare.” In the decades since, JBDY’s inspired lunacy has been unrepeatable, a situation that provoked a sigh of disapproval from the JBDY circus’ ringmaster, the late Kundan Shah. “If THIS film is being seen as the ultimate satire in Hindi cinema,” he told Jai Arjun Singh, author of a book on JBDY, “all it tells me is that Hindi cinema hasn’t achieved much.” We had to wait for years before Shah’s lunatic satire was declared a cult classic, as a piece of filmmaking that’s as meaningful as it is mad.
Mehmood and Nanda in Gumnaam. (Express archive photo)
Now, think of the stars who lent their heft to Hindi comedies. Mehmood is rarely given his due, despite being a highly prolific star. Same goes for Kishore Kumar, who thought he was a born singer but turned out, to the delight of film-goers, to be a complete natural as a funnyman. For a time, the Kumar brothers (Ashok, Kishore and Anoop) tried their luck as Bollywood’s answer to Marx brothers. Govinda, who entertained the masses with his 90s crowd-pleasers, is long dismissed as “tacky” though younger stars like Ranveer Singh and Varun Dhawan are now openly acknowledging his debt and trying to raise his profile on chat shows. Some, like Aamir Khan who infected Andaz Apna Apna with screwball silliness (he was a better comic than a boyish romantic star – watch Ishq or the more recent 3 Idiots and PK for proof) have long held Govinda in high esteem. Comedy also springs from unexpected sources. Dilip Kumar’s reputation rests on tragedies but when given the material, nobody could bring the house down quite like him. Decades later, Dharmendra revealed a softer side in Hrishikesh Mukherjee gems Chupke Chupke and Guddi. Even in a dramatic Western like Sholay, he’s given the responsibility of adding the goofier touch. Leading men aside, Bollywood comedy is mainly associated with Johnny Walker, Utpal Dutt, Jagdeep, Asrani, Johnny Lever and going further back, Bhagwan Dada whose funny dance steps are believed to have inspired Amitabh Bachchan. Speaking of Bachchan, he gave us some great comic moments in the 1970s, from the masquerading lit professor in Chupke Chupke to street-smart bootlegger in Amar Akbar Anthony. It’s also important to include Kadar Khan, Amrish Puri and Paresh Rawal – all cut from the Pran cloth – whose range went spectacularly from stylish baddies to sidekicks of comic subplots. The Hindi cinema women who gave us great joy include the roll-call of Hema Malini, Sridevi and Tun Tun. From Tun Tun’s fat woman gags (often, with a dozen boisterous kids and cantankerous hubby in tow) to Malini’s fast-talking Basanti and Sridevi’s mining of her ingenue and simpleton real-life personality for screen gold, Bollywood’s greatest comic moment have relied on the excellent timings of these gifted women.

As we revisit these 10 comedies, we can’t help but marvel over what a sheer stroke of genius (and a special turn of brain) it must have gone into the making of many of these classics. Yet, for all their efforts and creativity, comedies are rarely taken seriously. In Hollywood, too, the funsters hardly win any Oscar nods and those that do, are not considered at par with other genres. As lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar once rued, “I don’t know why we have a strange highbrow attitude towards comedy in our country. We think humour is cheap and inferior. I think we have been deprived of happiness and pleasure for a very long time, so we think that anything that can make people happy or can provide pleasure is either sinful or taboo, or of inferior quality.”
It is high time comedies are accorded the respectability they deserve or at least an acknowledgement that funny is a serious business.
Munnabhai M.B.B.S (2003)
‘Woh bahar casualty mein koi marne ki haalat mein raha, toh usko form bharna zaroori hai kya’ – Munnabhai (Express archive photo)
Part of the reason why Raju Hirani’s first film – also his breakout – worked so beautifully was Sanjay Dutt’s loveable gangster image. Where, for example, Vaastav’s Dutt was a more career gangster in Munnabhai, Hirani aims for the opposite effect, playing it for laughs. Hirani also flips Vaastav’s Mother India syndrome to daddy issues in Munnabhai and sticks to this trajectory in subsequent hits, most recently in Sanju. With Sanjay Dutt in comic mode, half your battle as a filmmaker is already won. Dutt plays the good-hearted goon Munnabhai who enters medical school to become a doctor and is assisted through the good and bad times by sidekick Circuit (Arshad Warsi). “Insaan ki body mein 206 type ka sirf haddi hai. Todne ka time apun sochte the kya?” Munnabhai shares his newly-found wisdom with Circuit, who later sends an “imported body” to his honcho for medical dissection. The Dutt-Warsi bromance and Hirani’s jaadu ki jhappi formula gives us a fresh and funny film that riffs on its leading actor’s tapori image and combines clean humour with social commentary that has become Hirani’s brand of cinema. In its highly conceptual sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai a few years down the line, Hirani resurrects Gandhi’s ghost to give us a new buzz word. This time, Gandhigiri.
Hera Pheri (2000)
‘Dil dariya hai baaki sab samandar hai, yeh meri samasya hai’ – Baburao Apte (Express archive photo)
Director Priyadarshan breathes enough confusion and chaos in this multi-starrer to keep the audience in splits. Writers Neeraj Vora and Siddique-Lal amp up the density of comic possibilities by introducing ever newer characters and no resolution in sight. Enter Khadak Singh (Om Puri’s hilarious Punjabi), the stranger who comes looking for a certain Shyam (Suniel Shetty). This sets the plot rolling. Shyam, along with Baburao Apte (Paresh Rawal) and his tenant Raju (Akshay Kumar) have to act swiftly to return Khadak Singh’s money. Throw in a side plot involving a wrong phone call and a kidnapping and you know you are hurtling towards a typical Priyadarshan climax full of confusion and deception. Call it a 1970s influence, if you will, a Priyadarshan climax brings together literally the entire cast in a game of cat and mouse. He’s our last showman in that sense. It’s often mistaken that Priyadarshan made Hera Pheri at his peak as a comic director. In fact, it’s among his earliest Hindi comedies and it set the tone for what this Malayalam filmmaker’s Bollywood career would look like. The film, led by a side-splitting Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Om Puri, is more than feel-good. It’s feel-better!
Dulhe Raja (1998)
‘Hamara sahab aayega toh lafda kar dega’ – Chhotu (Express archive photo)
Govinda has a flair for comedy that works for the masses, not for the classes. But who cares? In Dulhe Raja – the most David Dhawanesque comedy that David Dhawan didn’t make – he plays the title role, a smooth-talking roadside dhaba owner. The script sympathises with him, just the way it does for Rajinikanth or Mithun Chakraborty and other stars with irresistible mass appeal. It’s a typical Govinda character of a glib ruffian who falls for the rich man’s daughter. The rich man (Kadar Khan) lives in a mansion the size of a football stadium with massive staircases and circular sofas. When Govinda is in top form, he can seem like he was born to play that role. Director Harmesh Malhotra assembles the other Govinda staples for support. They include Kadar Khan, Johnny Lever and Asrani who help make this leave-your-brain-at-home comedy highly enjoyable – even memorable. One of the main pleasures of a Govinda film, besides generous doses of romp, are the songs. The popular Akhiyon se goli maare demonstrates the star’s free-style dance moves while the qawwali Suno sasurji, though equally cringe-worthy, is watchable exactly for those reasons.
Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
‘Aaj mujhe ehsaas hua, ki aap purush hi nahin, maha purush hai’ – Amar
Summarising this Rajkumar Santoshi con caper in terms of a linear storyline is like explaining how Aamir Khan scored that goal for Mohan Bagan using sherbet glasses. One of the drinks is spiked and he’s just got his memory back. To add to the confusion, either the goal was highly strategic or – this is more likely – he’s making the shit up. Aamir plays the ne’er-do-well Amar to Salman Khan’s bumbling Prem. Obviously, Paresh Rawal aka Teja dismisses them as “filmy and slackers.” From the start, when you first meet them as imposters in an endless round of one-upmanship trying to outwit each other, it becomes evident that this journey is not going to end well for them. But it does. (One loser tempts away a millionaire’s daughter) And along the way it’s nothing but a complete laugh-riot. AAA clearly belongs to the quick-talking Aamir, perhaps because he was given a central role for being a bigger star at the time but it’s incomplete without the collective madness of Salman Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Mehmood (his Wah Wah Productions’ gag is a homage to Pyar Kiye Jaa), Jagdeep and Paresh Rawal in a double role, creating further confusion about who is the real Teja. (He’s the one with a mark on his cheek).
Raja Babu (1994)
‘Samajtha nahin hai yaar’ – Nandu (Express archive photo)
David Dhawan hit it big with dramas like Swarg and Shola Aur Shabnam in the 1990s but found his niche in slapstick. Aankhen was his first major hit, but with Raja Babu, he got into full-fledged populist comedies. The plots (however preposterous) were often refashioned from Southern hits and there was always the reliably gabby charms of Govinda to turn it into comic gold. The two had already worked together and by the time of Raja Babu, you can see that they had arrived at a comfort level enjoyed by frequent collaborators. Govinda is a good mix of Dilip Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, but less sophisticated than them. Viewers, in fact, can spot the influence of Dilip Kumar on the Khans who appropriated the romantic aspects of Dilip Kumar. By contrast, Govinda picked up the Bhojpuri nuances from the Tragedy King. In Raja Babu, Dilip Kumar bears heavily on Govinda’s acting style. Call it mindless or mediocre, the film walks the tight rope between comedy and melodrama, blending Dhawan’s penchant for sappy plots with silly humour. The best scenes involve Raja (Govinda) and sidekick Nandu’s (Shakti Kapoor) crackling chemistry. Trust Shakti Kapoor to come up with strange accents and stranger get-ups. Their exclusive pastime includes hiring a small-time theater to watch an Amitabh Bachchan actioner and generally, gallivanting around on a flashy bike (matched to Govinda’s colourful costumes), Nandu faithfully holding the umbrella for his boss from the backseat. Raja Babu makes high art of low humour.
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)
Aage jaake log iss flyover ke neeche ghar basaaenge’ – Builder Tarneja (Express archive photo)
British author Martin Amis once described satire as “militant irony.” We are pretty sure the unassuming Kundan Shah would have neither heard of Amis nor agreed with that definition. But the director’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is angry (friend Saeed Mirza would approve), absurd, madcap, meaningful and bracingly funny. Ravi Baswani (Sudhir) and Naseeruddin Shah (Vinod) play down-on-luck photographers who get mired in a theatre of the absurd not entirely of their own making. Through these two small-timers who are the undercog (and underdog) in the system’s wheel, Shah flings powerful bolts of social commentary. JBDY isn’t about changing the world so much as firing militant stabs at it, one gag at a time. Made on a shoe-string budget, this blackest of comedy hints at all the issues that are still relevant in India today – political corruption, crony capitalism, unemployment and most importantly, the media. Rewatching the film, ‘Hum honge kaamyab’ plays like a lost cause. But then, depending upon your point of view and how you see the film, please feel free to read hope or helplessness from the film’s freeze-framing climax. As Sudhir and Vinod, in prison clothes, break the fourth wall and make a throat-slashing gesture you know things are headed straight to the gallows.
Gol Maal (1979)
‘Main tujhe maaf nahin, saaf kar dunga’ – Bhawani Shankar (Express archive photo)
Is Bollywood a corrupting influence on Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s characters? In Gol Maal, Amol Palekar has a penchant for Hindi films and in a fantasy song, dreams about displacing Amitabh Bachchan to become Bollywood’s leading hero. This scene assumes a dimension of meta-fun when seen from the context of Palekar’s everyman status both on and off screen. He could never topple Bachchan from the mainstream top slot (many would rightly argue he never intended to) but some of the 1970-80s defining middle cinema classics cannot be imagined without Palekar’s extraordinary ordinariness. In the same film, his stern and disciplinarian boss Bhawani Shankar’s (Utpal Dutt) is repulsed by all modern elements, cinema and sports included. Interestingly, in Guddi (1971), Dutt plays a sincere professor struck by the make-believe world of cinema (he’s shocked to see that a blind beggar can not only see but speaks English, though he later learns that he is just another actor in a get-up waiting for his scene) but, ironically, doesn’t mind negotiating with superstar Dharmendra (as himself) to help cure Guddi (Jaya Bhaduri) from her film obsession. Once again in Gol Maal, Hrishida pits Palekar and Dutt in a sparkling interplay of the auteur’s familiar tropes of role-playing, charades and trickery – prodded gently by the ever-elderly David. Side note: The moustache and what it stands for in the making of a man’s honour is obviously the best-loved part about Gol Maal.
Take Our Poll
Chupke Chupke (1975)
‘Corolla khane mein kadva hota hai par liver ke liye bohot achcha hota hai’ – Professor Sukumar (Express archive photo)
In 1972’s Bawarchi, Hrishikesh Mukherjee stripped Rajesh Khanna off his starry sheen and gave the late superstar the role of a cook. Albeit, this is no ordinary cook. He’s a philosopher. Three years later, Hrishida cast Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan against type in Chupke Chupke, a timeless comedy about mistaken and newly-assumed identities, practical jokes and elaborate charades and disguises. Dharmendra plays a renowned professor (Parimal Tripathi) masquerading as a driver (Pyare Mohan), just so that he can bring wife Sulekha’s (Sharmila Tagore) hero-worshipping reverence for brother-in-law (Om Prakash) a few notches down. The driver speaks impeccably chaste Hindi, just as Bawarchi’s cook expounded philosophy. Amitabh Bachchan gets to prove his comic flair as the awkward and nervous English lit professor Sukumar while Sharmila Tagore, as a girl from a very respectable upper-class Indian family, breaks all social norms. First, by sitting in the first seat next to driver Pyare, next by singing a romantic duet with him and eventually, eloping much to the embarrassment of “genius jijaji” Om Prakash. A classic Hindi film trope that Hrishida, and his privileged and educated middle-class characters, often take a harmless dig at. Cinema, for them, may not be vulgar but it’s definitely a vice that wouldn’t go down well with the elderly bookish bhadralok lot.

Padosan (1968)
‘Arrey gadhu, baith upar aur awaaz neechi kar’ – Guru (Express archive photo)
Kishore Kumar was a madcap genius and Padosan, as any fan will tell you, was central to the singer’s fame as a spitfire comedian. This is also a film where his funnyman and crooner personas collide into pure anarchy and this very combination of a man who could sing and make you laugh at the same time became his chief stock-in-trade. When we first meet him, Kishoreda is a paan-chewing theatre director (the paan serves the same function as the pipe on Groucho Marx) who’s pulling his hair (middle-parted, if you will) out trying to teach Keshto Mukherjee the right pronunciation of the Perso-Arabic word ‘Qais.’ Later on in the film, Kishoreda aka Guru would have the same trouble tutoring Bhola (Sunil Dutt, so named because he’s a bit of a bumpkin) about music. Bhola’s assassination of Sa Re Ga is epic. The scenes involving Kishore Kumar offering playback to Bhola, as he tries to woo the stylish neighbour (Saira Banu, the padosan Bindu of the title) are easily some of the funniest scenes ever projected on Hindi screens. Not to mention, Mehmood’s stereotypical Madrasi, who anticipates future Southies in Bollywood. At a time when the job of a heroine was to be a glamorous prop, Padosan thankfully offers a meaty comic role to the eyelash-fluttering Saira Banu. One wonders why filmmakers didn’t tap Sunil Dutt’s comic flair. He is beyond brilliant here, as a brahmachari-turned-majnu who is forced to vie with his mamaji (Om Prakash) for Saira Banu’s affection. In what could have easily descended into a mama-bhanjha plot, director Jyoti Swaroop (one of the many cases where we know the film, but are blissfully oblivious of who made it) keeps it about Bhola, Bindu, Guru and Mehmood’s Master Pillai.
Half Ticket (1962)
‘Tond mein chhupaye hai chiraag-e-Aladin’ – Munna (Express archive photo)
In one of the funnier scenes of Half Ticket, Kishore Kumar bumps into Tun Tun’s naughty boy (named Bhopu) at a railway station and entices him with a wikipedia of Indian sweets (“Rasgulla khaaoge, gulab jamun khaaoge, imarti khaaoge, peda khaaoge!”) Stealing Bhopu’s clothes, Kishore who plays Seth Lalchand’s son (Vijaychand vald Lalchand vald Dhyanchand vald Hukumchand) assumes a new identity – that of the man-child Munna – and hobbles off to Bombay. He’s on a half-ticket ride, escaping the rich fortunes of his mill-owning family. Enter Pran (jewel thief Raja Babu, Munna’s comic foil) who spends the rest of the film tied in an umbilical chord with Munna. There’s also Madhubala and Manorama but Half Ticket is Kishore’s full ticket to comic acrobatics – his very own Marxian lunacy given free reign. Some of the film’s finest moments reside in their songs, including the zany “Cheel cheel chillake” – a gibberish-sounding lyrics that is probably as anarchic as Groucho Marx’s “Whatever it is, I am against it”. But listen closely. Unlike the Horse Feathers’ anthem which is a nonsensical rhyme, Cheel cheel chillake hits out at his father’s capitalism and its “teen ko hamesha karte aaye saadhe teen” mantras. How easily Kishore shifts from get-up to get-up and situations and yodels away into what looks like impromptu ad-libs. With him, there is always some raucous romp round the corner. It is interesting to note that while in Padosan he corrects Keshto’s grammar, in Half Ticket’s climax, it is uncle Pran (with his excellent grasp of Urdu) who gets to clarify Kishore’s “ba-munakka, ba-sherbat.” It is actually “ba-mushakkat” but that word turns out to be a sign of bad omen for Raja Babu, as he is finally arrested.

Over the last few years, we have seen more and more filmmakers opting for the biopic route. A big factor for this, is the fact that the audience are always interested in knowing more about someone they admire. Be it the olympic athlete Milkha Singh or India’s most successful captain M.S Dhoni, we are always eager to know more about the lives of these legends and what went into making them who they are today. And the box-office collections of these biopics provide more than enough proof of the audience’s interest.
While we have many biopics in the pipeline, one that excites us the most is Sanju. Sanju is without a doubt the most awaited biopic of the year. What separates Sanju from the rest is that it is based on the life Sanjay Dutt. Mostly, the biopics that we have seen are about sports persons who have gone on to achieve the impossible or people who have made unbelievable sacrifices for the greater good. But, it is the first time we will see a biopic about a person who we have seen so much of and is still, very much in the business. Another interesting part about Sanju is that the makers have time and again been extremely specific about the fact that Sanju in no way tries to glorify the actor. We all know that Sanjay Dutt has gone through many ups and downs in his life. The filmmakers have insisted that they have showcased his life on the big screen as it was, they have not attempted to make him look like a hero or a bad guy.
With the release of Sanju less than a month away, we take undertake a detailed study of the film right from the point it was conceptualized.
Even though Rajkumar Hirani has worked on quite a few films with Sanjay Dutt, including Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and P.K, he never was interested in making a biopic on him. But, his interactions with Sanjay Dutt when he was out on parole made him think that even the most creative writers won’t be able to come up with such a story and he knew he had to make a film on it. During an interview with a leading daily at the time of P.K’s release, Rajkumar Hirani revealed the same. He said, “However, much earlier when I was penning PK, Sanjay was out on parole and I happened to meet him. He just started talking about his life. He was lonely. Maanayata (I think) was in hospital and he used to go there (sometimes) and then come home to an empty house. So, he was just venting, speaking straight from the heart. And, he started giving me anecdotes that were just gems for a filmmaker… ki aisi film toh hum soch hi nahin sakte, likh hi nahin sakte… Even though I had worked with him, I wasn’t close friends with him, like, say, other filmmakers such as Sanjay Gupta, Mahesh Manjrekar and others were. I knew Sanju, but there was always a distance. He had never opened up like he did on that occasion. I had gone at 5 pm, stayed with him till 3 am and then came back home.
The next day, when I was editing, he called me and asked me to come over. I think he wanted to talk. After that, I called Abhijat (writer Abhijat Joshi) and told him I’m hearing these crazy anecdotes, which even if I want to write, I don’t know how to go about it.
The following day, I took Abhijat along. For over 25 days, we sat for a crazy amount of time and recorded everything. We didn’t know if there was a film because most of the things he recounted were anecdotal. I had no idea how to string them together. But what we did feel was that here was a man who had led such a crazy life in every way. He was coping with the loss of his mother, he had been to rehab for drug addiction, then he went to jail (sighs). Besides what he told me, I also met others who knew him — journalists, cops, relatives and friends. I felt there was a movie that should be told. The first thought that came to me was we will say it like it is. I told Sanju that we won’t glorify him and he was okay with it. He was like, jo bhi hai, banao.. He had talked about drugs, women, the gun, almost everything that happened. For a filmmaker, it’s like a goldmine.”
In the same interview, Rajkumar Hirani also revealed how they finalised on Sanju as the title for the biopic. He said, “Actually, we thought of many titles. One of them was Aisa Hi Hoon. Anything you attach with a name in a biopic is like an adjective. Even if you say Aisa Hi Hoon or Sarphira, either you are glorifying him or attacking him. One thing all of us were clear about was that we wanted a neutral title. Dutt seemed a little harsh. Then I heard a gem from him. Apparently, Nargisji used to call him ‘Sanju’ with a lot of affection. We thought this is the most non-committal and neutral title, with no preconceived notions.”
Another important part for Rajkumar Hirani was making sure to get the casting of the film absolutely spot on. Since the biopic is about Sanjay Dutt, most of the people are aware of how he was a person, his mannerisms, his body language and his style of talking etc. Not only Sanjay Dutt, the film also shows his father Sunil Dutt, his mother Nargis and many more people who had a big influence on his life. So, if the characters in the film are not convincing enough for the audience, he may risk losing their interest.
Rajkumar Hirani’s choice of Ranbir Kapoor for playing the character of Sanjay Dutt certainly raised eyebrows. Although there are no doubts about Ranbir Kapoor’s acting skills, people were still surprised with Hirani’s choice since until now Ranbir hasn’t been seen in such a role. But if a director like Rajkumar Hirani believes that an actor can do the job, it means he definitely sees something in him by which he was convinced. And now with the trailer of the biopic being out, we couldn’t agree more with Rajkumar Hirani’s choice. In the three minutes of the trailer, Ranbir has brilliantly portrayed the life of Sanjay Dutt with all shades available on the colour palette of emotion. The trailer starts off with the younger days of Sanjay Dutt, during which, he explains how he ended up getting addicted to drugs. The trailer also talks about his affairs and also makes a reference to an alleged connection with the underworld and the media speculation surrounding it.
This also proves the point of the makers that they are not holding back on anything with this biopic, they aren’t shying away from sharing bold details about his much talked about controversial life, ranging from his drug addiction to multiple link-ups.
Ranbir Kapoor also said during an interview with a leading daily, that they are portraying a fraud man in the biopic. He said, “With the Sanjay Dutt biopic, he has been so honest about his life. We are not portraying a Gandhi like charater. We’re portraying a very fraud man. He’s someone who is love and disliked. He’s the most controversial, and to have the ability to tell about your life so honestly, and to make a movie out of it is very brave.”
He also mentioned that he admires Sanjay Dutt’s courage to come forward and share his life with everybody, He said, “If I was in his position, I don’t think I could be this honest about my life and make myself look like a person who is not nice. If an audience can take something from that and learn from his life.I think it’s a very positive thing.”
During an interview with a leading daily, Rajkumar Hirani was asked what convinced him that Ranbir is the right choice to play the part. He said, “The first reason for choosing him is that he’s a fantastic actor. And the second reason is that he is at the perfect age. I needed an actor who could be 21 (years old) because that is where the film begins. That was the age when Sanju was shooting for Rocky and his drug phase started. And then we have Sanju when he came out of prison (around 56 years). So, we needed someone who could fit that transformation. I had a basic draft of this biopic when I sent Ranbir a message, ‘I’ve a script, let’s meet up when you’re free.’ Ranbir is usually aware of everything that is happening in the industry. He is very sharp. I’m guessing he already knew that I was planning a biopic on Sanjay. When I sent him the message, Ranbir promptly replied, ‘I hope it’s not the Sanjay Dutt biopic.’ And I thought, ‘Oh God, maybe he has heard and he may not want to do it.’ I told him it’s the same script, but let’s meet. When I met him, I realised he knew a lot about Sanju. He had spent time with him and knew him well. He used to work out at his gym and had probably heard the stories. But when he saw the angle of the story, he was like, ‘It’s interesting, let’s do it.’”
After being casted in the film, it was time for Ranbir to prepare himself for portraying a character like Sanjay Dutt on screen. Rajkumar Hirani further revealed what went into recreating Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt on screen. He said, “Physically, they’re not similar. Sanju is bigger, but Ranbir is slightly taller than him. He doesn’t seem so, but it is true. Ranbir worked very hard to get the physicality right. He spent days watching tons of videos to strike the right balance and when you observe him in the film, you will notice that there is a resemblance of Sanjay Dutt, yet you know it is Ranbir Kapoor. If he did anything slightly more, it would look caricaturish and if he did a little less, it wouldn’t work. I didn’t think about anyone else. I first thought of Ranbir and went straight to him and I can tell you, we were right.”
Besides Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza will be seen playing the role of his wife Manyaata Dutt. Paresh Rawal will be stepping into the shoes of the late Sunil Dutt and Manisha Koirala will essay the role of his mother Nargis in the film. Jim Sarbh will be playing the role of Salman Khan and Vicky Kaushal is said to be playing the role of the actors close friend, Kumar Gaurav. Although, the makers insist that Vicky Kaushal’s is not only playing Kumar Gaurav but his role is an amalgamation of his few close friends. Sonam Kapoor, who made her Bollywood debut with Ranbir Kapoor back in 2017, will represent his many love interests through her role. Anushka Sharma too will be seen playing a cameo in the film. When a leading daily asked Rajkummar Hirani what was her role in the film, he said, “To showcase a biopic like this, you have to compress few parts into one. Similarly, Anushka Sharma’s character is derived from myself and Abhijat. She is playing a biographer from London, and she comes to India. Sanjay wants her to write a book on him whereas she doesn’t want to.
“We were also skeptical at first whether we should do this character or not. So basically she is us, but not as a filmmaker… (as) a biographer.”
But, we were obviously curious to know how did Sanjay Dutt react to the trailer of the film. So, when Rajkumar Hirani was asked about the actors reaction during am interview with a leading daily, he said, “Yes, I have shown it as well as some scenes to him. He gets overwhelmed. In fact, I told him to see the full film, but he said no, he would watch it when it’s complete. He came to the sets only twice. I think he is pretty brave. He has talked about everything in his life. I don’t think everyone will have that courage.”
Sanju will be hitting the theatres on 29th June 2018. If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie promises to be one big roller coaster ride! Just a three minute glimpse into the film has already got fans waiting for the film with bated breaths! 29th June couldn’t come any sooner!

Rang De Basanti
When Rang De Basanti released on 26 January Jan 26, 2006, I remember watching the film with a very fidgety, very confused audience reacting as we all to unfamiliar experiences, with embarrassment and heckling.
The film adopted a unique format to tell the story of a freedom that we all have taken for granted. The film unfolds through the eyes of a young British documentary maker Sue (Alice Patten) who comes to India to shoot a documentary on the Indian freedom struggle. The story of Rang De Basanti is told in two time zones. In the past , Aamir Khan cast as Chandrashekar Azad, Tamil star Siddharth as Bhagat Singh, Atul Kulkarni as Ramprasad Bismil, Kunal Kapoor as Ashfaqullah Khan and Sharman Joshi as Rajguru. The same actors were also seen in contemporary times grappling with the grammar of socio-political corruption.
After watching the film, I was stunned by director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s audacity and creative energy. I knew I was watching a film that would create history. But I also felt, wrongly, that it would be a box office disaster. As usual I underestimated the power of the Indian audience to absorb and assimilate unique cinematic experiences.
I remember speaking to Rakeysh (now a dear afriend) after watching the film. Rakeysh was confident of the impact his film would make on the audience. Looking back he says, “Rang De Basanti is a younger film. But I didn’t consciously choose a subject that would be more accessible to audiences than my first film Aks. I knew I had to make this film. Since Aks, my storytelling technique had improved. You learn from your past mistakes and new experiences. This time I had the luxury of living with my script for four years. So many people joined me on the journey that was Rang De Basanti. It was no longer my film. When it released it became the audiences’ film.”

Looking back at Rang De Basanti, I am struck by how effective the entire cast was, and how miscast Aamir Khan was as the college brat. In fact he was so over-age for the part that the director had to write in a dialogue explaining why his character DJ chooses to hang on to his campus days long after he has crossed his student days.
Rang De Basanti came when patriotism was passé. There were 4-5 Bhagat Singh films that didn’t connect with the audience. Then there was Aamir Khan's disastrous Mangal Pandey.
Rakeysh was determined to make the film. He says, “It’s a collection of many circumstances. In school I wanted to join the air force. It didn’t work out for me. In college in Delhi I was predominantly a sportsman. It didn’t work out because I was from a lower middle-class family. And the first priority was to bring money back into the family….As kids in Delhi on 15 August when we flew kites, we could hear India Gandhi speaking…On the other side there were the patriotic songs on the loudspeaker….Ae mere watan, Mere desh ki dharti…We were looking at the idea of our country through a kite….Films like Mother India, Do Bigha Zameen, Naya Daur touched all of us. This was the era when escapism hadn’t seeped into cinema or real life. That was the era I wanted to re-capture in Rang De Basanti.”
Seven years ago even before his first film Aks, Rakeysh wanted to make a film called Awaaz. There are shades of Awaaz in Rang De Basanti.
Recalls Rakeysh, “Awaaz was about a bunch of boys working in a garage, the haves and have-nots. I wanted to make it with Abhishek Bachchan. Then I wanted to make a film on the life of the revolutionaries. What I didn’t want to do was to shoot them with halos ….I wanted to shoot them as normal youngsters . I wanted to call it The Young Guns Of India.”
Initially Rakeysh wanted to make a film on the life of Bhagat Singh. Then the race for Bhagat Singh films started. Several of Bhagat Singh bio-pics hit theatres one after another.
Recalls Rakeysh, “Initially I wanted to enter the race. Then I realized we were all insulting his memory. Attention was diverted by who would get into theatres first. I moved on….I did a focus group in Delhi and Mumbai. I took a new story idea to youngsters between 17 and 23. Our survey showed that for our generation a relationship meant, ‘Let’s get married and make babies together.’ Not to this generation. The youngsters we spoke to were driven by ambition. And I didn’t even know how to get on the internet! Anyway, we then moved into surveying them about the country and the tri-colour. The borders of patriotism had blurred. Pagdi sambhal jatta was no more relevant. Not too many kids knew who Chandrashekhar Azad was. I told my writer Kamlesh Pandey there was no point in making a film about the freedom fighters. He insisted , reminded me of the passion that Manoj Kumar’s films used to incite. But that was a different era.” This, says Rakeysh, was when Rang De Basanti born. “I sadly abandoned the original idea and hit on another idea of a British documentary filmmaker coming to India to make a film on the Indian armed revolution. She finds kids who are more western than her. Two lines… the past and present run together. They intersect. There are sparks. Then the rooftop scene where the line between past and present blurs when Soha Ali Khan asks her friends to kill the raksha mantri… Suddenly the original idea was replaced by this new idea.”
It cost Rs 25 crores to make Rang De Basanti.
Rakesh is all praise for his cast. “Aamir didn’t dominate the film. And yet he has brought in everything require. The whole Punjabi accent for his Mona-Sardar character was his idea. There was an attraction between Siddharth’s and Soha’s characters. We couldn’t bring it into the forefront because of lack of space. In any case love stories don’t have to have a happy ending. Today’s generation is very mature about love and its end.”
The film's controversial ending, where the protagonists gun down corrupt politicians, has been perceived as fascist. Rationalizes Rakeysh, “Every story has to follow its own course. When heroes in a mythology enter the caves to fight the demons , they’ve to perish. Mani Ratnam’s Yuva didn’t work for me after the heroes went into the parliament….What jolted the audience is, they love my heroes and they don’t want them to die. Too bad. You love and lose the best people in your lives. It isn’t a heroic but a poetic ending. But they become heroes because they die. What I’m trying to say is, we got independence from the goras. But we got enslaved by our own. Now we’re killing each other. You’re from Bihar. You know what I mean. There can be no neat solution to the problems we face. Rang De Basanti is a conversation with the masses.”
