I have a dream!
No, the Mad Malteser is not turning into Martin Luther-King, although there are similarities. She is a disrupter and she can definately talk!
The title jumped into my mind last night as I was laying in bed reflecting on our trip to Machu Picchu and MM was snoring peacefully at my side. I was just remembering the windy road down the mountain on the 1st evening when she turned to me and said "I've had an idea, we're going to do the 170 mile Portuguese coastal Comino de Santiago walk next September!". How fickle. We'd only just finished the most recent of her dreams and here was the next one already.
I have a dream......... Taj Mahal (done)
I have a dream......... Tongariro walk (done)
I have a dream......... Grand Canyon (done)
I have a dream........ Machu Picchu (done)
I have a dream......... Comino de Santiago (Nooooo)
I suddenly realised that she had been building up to this moment for some time. "ooh, let's watch this documentary on the Comino de Santiago", "September's a lovely month to go on holiday", "those celebrities doing the Comino de Santiago don't look very fit, I bet even you could do it". All these little pebbles strategically dropped over time to get me to agree to yet another unreasonable request - crafty little bugger!
Let's hope I can hold out against the onslaught that will surely arrive over the coming weeks and months.
You've probably realised that we decided against doing the Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley walk today. It really was too tight. It would have been another 4.00am departure from the hotel with a late return before we leave Cusco tomorrow on the bus to Puno. We'll arrive in Puno at 8.00pm and then be picked up at 7.15am the following day (Saturday) to spend a full day on Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world. On Sunday we catch the 5.30am bus from Puno to La Paz, crossing the border into Bolivia on the way. As you can see, it's going to be a busy few days, so a gentle day today was a good call I think.

[ad_1] Marie Snowling was among the regulars at Cook’s Corner, a popular bar and restaurant on Santiago Canyon Road in Trabuco Canyon. She especially liked to go on Spaghetti Night, when the roadside pub offered all-you-can-eat pasta for $8.On Wednesday, her neighbor Mary Talian knew Snowling was out. She looked out the window of her mobile home in Orange all night as she waited for Snowling to come home.Talian would learn later that Snowling had been taken to the hospital, the victim of a mass shooting at Cook’s Corner. John Snowling, Marie’s estranged husband and a former Ventura police officer, entered the bar and immediately opened fire on her, authorities said. She was struck once, but survived, Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said. He did not say anything to his wife before he shot her, Barnes said.James Goldsmith, 68, who lived two doors down from the Snowlings in Camarillo for more than two decades, said that Marie Snowling had separated from her husband a few years ago and moved out to live with her ailing mother in Orange County. Goldsmith said he knew the former couple was going through “marital issues” but never heard any shouting or saw the police come by because of domestic disputes. Snowling wanted to go out more and complained that all her husband wanted to do was stay at home, he said.“John was always kind of a standoffish kind of person,” Goldsmith said. “He wasn’t the most personable guy —not that I can say that there was anything really negative. He wasn’t the type of neighbor that you’d get the warm fuzzies from.”On the other hand, Marie was an “absolute sweetheart” and a “really nice person,” Goldsmith said. She was the more social of the two, he said, and he would often see her walking her dog outside. When Goldsmith’s son was younger, he played with the Snowlings’ son.Court documents show Snowling separated from her husband in 2020. She moved to Orange County to take care of her mother, who was in hospice. After her mother died, she moved into the small mobile home park in Orange, where she often checked in on Talian and picked up groceries for her.Snowling took over as manager at the park in the last several months, Talian’s daughter, Carol Franke, said. The job was a perfect fit, Franke said, because Snowling is a consummate professional and also a people person.“The first words out of her mouth are always, ‘How are you?’ or ‘How are the kids?’ She never talked about herself,” Franke said. “Marie celebrated other people’s wins. That’s just who she is.”Another neighbor, Denise Craft, agreed that Snowling was a personable neighbor. She knew about the divorce and said Snowling’s estranged husband had taken their dog. She said Snowling invited her to Cook’s Corner on several occasions. “We talked about going sometime,” said Craft, who has lived in the Orange neighborhood for the last 20 years. “We just hadn’t gotten around to it.”Talian said Snowling always took her calls. “She never would not call me back,” she said. “Even if she was out at Cook’s Corner, she would step out from the music and talk to me. That’s how I knew that something was wrong last night — when she didn’t call back.”Snowling was among nine people injured in the gunfire Wednesday night at Cook’s Corner, an Orange County biker bar at the juncture of El Toro, Santiago Canyon and Live Oak Canyon roads that doubles as a family-friendly dining spot. By the time the attack was over, four people — including the gunman — were dead. Besides Snowling, five others were wounded and taken to area hospitals. An attorney who represented Snowling in divorce proceedings, Kenneth Henjum, said her family was reeling and asked for privacy. “We are awaiting further information from the medical professionals regarding Marie’s current condition,” he said in a statement. Snowling filed for divorce in December, citing “irreconcilable differences,” records show. She had been married to her husband for nearly 32 years. Tristan Tegroen, who represented John Snowling in the divorce, said he didn’t get the sense any one issue had prompted the split. The two simply felt their marriage had run its course, he said. “John was living in Ohio and she was here, and they were living apart.” Their divorce case was “low-key,” Tegroen said, bereft of any signs of rancor or ill will. Marie Snowling did not seek a restraining order against her husband or raise accusations of abuse. “If you look at the filing, there was no rush to grab money from the guy,” he said. “A lot of times, they’ll try to get temporary alimony. There was none of that.” Tegroen declined to specify which assets were at issue in the case but said they included John Snowling’s police pension and real estate. He described John Snowling as “composed, good memory, detailed. I think with his background, it made sense he had those attributes.” “Honestly, this came as a horrible shock to me,” Tegroen said. “There was nothing on the radar to suggest he might do this.”Talian said the neighborhood is still reeling from news of the shooting and is eager for Snowling to return home.“She started a new life here and just got her home painted,” she said. “She was excited about that.”Times staff writers Hannah Fry and Richard Winton contributed to this report. The Batty Bridge
Most folks think bat colonies reside in dank caves far from civilization, but the furry flying mammals often make do with anything that looks promising. Up Santiago Canyon Road toward Black Star Canyon, an unused concrete bridge spans the blacktop just after the exit for Irvine Lake. Built as a temporary thoroughfare for construction, the bridge was on the brick of destruction when it was discovered that a colony of Mexican free-tailed bats had made their summer home and nursey beneath the span. A stay of demolition was issued in April 2004, and four months later Orange County supervisor Bill Campbell moved to have the structure set aside as a permanent bat roost and part of a backcountry trail system.
The bridge is only one over the road and is easy to spot. Some 1,500 bats to make their home here from spring through fall, when they migrate south. It’s hard to believe the cute little critters can get a good day’s sleep with choppers and diesel trucks roaring past every few minutes, but they seem content to chitter and chirp away in the crevices running under the bridge. Look for two wide lines of guano marking the road and watch out, lest you get hit with bat pee. Black Star Canyon Road is reached by exiting the Costa Mesa Toll Road (Highway 55) at Santiago Canyon Road. Turn left at Silverado Canyon Road.

These lands are where the fire intensity was rated as high and the slopes are less than 50%. From that report, a team of resource specialists have recommended and funding has been obtained to treat 1,241 acres of Forest Service lands with aerially-applied hydromulch. The Forest Service has conducted post fire assessments in a process called the Burned Area Emergency Response or BAER. Single engine airplanes and a large helicopter working over the Santiago Fire area began on December 17th signaling the start of the US Forest Service’s aerial hydromulch operations, designed to minimize soil erosion and reduce run-off in the canyon areas of Silverado and Modjeska Canyons. The Santiago Fire, which burned in eastern Orange County, has been allocated $4,976,500 to implement treatments on national forest system lands, such as aerial hydro-mulching of 1,241 acres to reduce potential flood and sediment damage to downstream communities stabilization of 14 miles of road installation of warning and information signs and construction of OHV barriers. The Santiago Fire burned a total of 28,476 acres, 6,701 acres of which burned on the Cleveland NF and 21,775 acres of which burned on private land. Santiago Fire - The fire started on October 21, 2007. For more information on the Santiago Fire area closure or the Trabuco Ranger District, please contact the District in Corona at 95. Please see the map below (use existing map) for the closed area on the Santiago Fire on the Trabuco Ranger district. Unfortunately, due to the steep terrain and the intensity of the fire, the entire Santiago Fire area on the Trabuco Ranger District remains closed to allow for continued restoration efforts to be conducted. Please see the maps below for a graphic representation of the roads and trails that are still closed.įor information on the Poomacha and Witch Fire areas on the Palomar Ranger District, please call the District office in Ramona at 76.įor further information concerning the Harris fire area, please contact the Descanso Ranger District in Alpine at 61. However, within the Witch Fire area, some roads and the Wild Horse Trail through the Agua Tibia Wilderness on the Palomar Ranger District remains closed. Currently, the Harris, Poomacha and Witch Fire areas on the Palomar and Descanso Ranger Districts are open for public use. Many areas of the Cleveland National Forest have re-opened following the October 2007 wildfires.

Pairing: Frankie ‘Catfish’ Morales x GN Reader
Rated: T
Warnings: Underage drinking.
A/N: Keeping in my goal of attempting to write more, I decided to just put my Spotify on shuffle and write something inspired by whatever song comes on... And of course it gave me The Boys of Summer by Canyon City, which only led to a cliche little thing about teenage love and loss... I know it’s not much, but I’d definitely appreciate feedback! And if you're interested in seeing more stuff like this with songs of your choosing, feel free to send me a song and a character! I can write for Javier Peña or any of the TF guys 🥰.

It’s the final days of the summer of 1993. You’re in Frankie’s old Chevy truck, stuck between him and Santi on the bench seat, gear shift digging into your leg every time Frankie shifts. The truck was at least 20 years old, but Frankie’s dad had helped him and Santi fix it up three summers ago and the boys were obsessive about upkeep ever since. Finding them in the Morales garage on a Friday night was a common occurrence, their heads stuck under the truck’s black hood, or their legs poking out from under the chassis.
Today, though, you three had spent the day at the beach. A hot, sunny day that began surrounded by school friends and acquaintances had ended with just you, your boyfriend and the best friend the two of you had ever had. You tried not to think about what the next week would bring, because then you’d have to think about having to live without them. How they were leaving for basic training, and, after that, who knew? They assured you they’d be back after basic, but nobody knew where they would end up going then. The two men couldn’t even guarantee they would stay together after that point.
Frankie shifts again and his golden brown hand bumps the sun-kissed skin of your leg. He takes a second to unwrap his fingers from the gear shift and close them around your knee, engulfing it in a warmth different than that of the summer air. That warmth seeps into your skin and flows through your chest to wrap itself around your heart. Your eyes follow a path from his hand, up his toned arm and stopping at his strong profile framed by the pinks and oranges of the setting sun. With the windows down and his ever-present hat currently resting comfortably on your own head, his mocha curls are waving in the summer breeze.
His face shifts toward you and your eyes lock with his shining onyx, causing his mouth to turn up into a grin, showing off the dimple in his smooth cheek. With a little wink he goes back to the shifter and increases the truck’s speed, sailing smoothly down the empty span of road. And somehow you fall a little bit more in love with him.
Santi nudges you with his elbow, holding a half empty bottle of vodka for you to take a swig from.
“You two gonna drink it all before we even get there?” Frankie grouches. But his smile is wide and he laughs openly at Santi’s response of, “Don’t worry, ‘mano. There’s like three more bottles.”
Looking back, you’ll never regret those nights spent with Frankie and Santiago driving around in that old truck, drinking on the beach or in the woods. And while you all tried to keep in contact, life always seems to get in the way. You went away to college after the gap year that your mom and dad deeply disapproved of. Frankie and Santi were separated for a while, but you had heard from your parents that they were finally assigned to the same unit at some point. They’d come home to visit sometimes, but you were living your own life away from home then, trying to start a career and find your own way through life.
It wasn’t until the summer of 2010 that you saw either of them again. You walked out of your hometown coffee shop into the stifling summer evening, the dipping sun casting red and orange across the quiet street, and almost ran directly into a tall, firm body.
“I’m so sorry,” a deep voice surrounded you.
Looking up, you were met with a set of onyx eyes. They were surrounded by laugh lines, and behind the apologetic look you could see a deep weariness, but immediately you felt the sensation of falling into those deep pools of brown. A sensation that took you back to 1993 when you fell into those eyes one last time as you kissed your first love goodbye.
The rasp of your name from his lips pulls you from your free fall, and he’s smiling down at you, teeth still blindingly white under a mustache that he didn’t have before and dimple peeking out from under a patchy beard.
“Hey, Frankie.”

Here’s the mainnstuff that happened on this date in music. And Dolly Parton is CRYING all the way to the bank...
1954 - Danny Cedrone
Guitarist Danny Cedrone died following a freak accident; 10 days after he had recorded the lead guitar break on 'Rock Around the Clock' with Bill Haley and His Comets. Session player Cedrone was paid $21 for his work on the session, as at that time Haley chose not to hire a full-time guitarist for his group. He died of a broken neck after falling down a staircase.
1971 - Carole King
Carole King went to No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Tapestry’ for the first of 15 consecutive weeks. The album contained ‘It's Too Late’, ‘I Feel the Earth Move’, ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’’ and ‘You've Got a Friend’. The cover photograph taken at King's Laurel Canyon home shows her sitting in a window frame, holding a tapestry she hand-stitched herself, with her cat Telemachus at her feet.
1972 - Don McLean
Don McLean had his first UK No.1 single with 'Vincent.' The song was written about the 19th century artist Vincent Van Gogh. The song is played daily at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
1972 - The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones album Exile on Main Street started a four-week run at the top of the US charts. The double album, regularly regarded as one of the band's best, features 'Rocks Off', 'Rip This Joint', 'Happy' and 'Tumbling Dice'.
1973 - Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton recorded 'I Will Always Love You' in RCA's Studio "B" in Nashville. Written for her one-time partner and mentor, Porter Wagoner, (the two were splitting professionally at the time). The song was later a world-wide hit for Whitney Houston.
1976 - Blondie
Blondie released their debut single 'X Offender'. Written by Gary Valentine and Debbie Harry, the title of the song was originally 'Sex Offender', written about an 18-year-old boy being arrested for having sex with his younger girlfriend. Debbie Harry changed the lyrics so that the song was about a prostitute being attracted to the police officer that had arrested her. Private Stock, the band’s label insisted that the single be changed to 'X Offender' because they were nervous about the original title.
1977 - Elton John
After Jimmy Helms pulled out of a gig at Shoreditch College, the members of the social committee decided to call upon famous local, Elton John who lived up the road and ask if he would perform. Elton did the gig for two bottles of wine.
1978 - Andy Gibb
Andy Gibb became the first solo artist in the history of the US charts to have his first three releases reach No.1, when 'Shadow Dancing' hit the top of the chart. Spending seven weeks at No.1 it became the best selling single in the US in 1978.
1978 - Olivia Newton-John
'You're The One That I Want' by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John started a nine week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart. The song was from the film Grease.
1979 - Anita Ward
Anita Ward was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Ring My Bell'. The only hit for the gospel singer from Memphis, making her a One Hit Wonder.
1987 - Motley Crue
Florida real estate agent Vittoria Holman sued Motley Crue and their concert promoter for hearing loss allegedly incurred at a concert in December 1985. Holman and her daughter had front row seats less than 10 feet (3 meters) from the speakers. The case was settled out of court with the band's insurance company paying Holman over $30,000. (£18,200).
1997 - Ozzy Osbourne
Fans rioted at an Ozzfest concert in Columbus Ohio, after Ozzy Osbourne couldn't perform due to throat problems. Angry fans broke windows, uprooted trees, and turned over a parked car.
2009 - Billy Joel
60-year-old Billy Joel and his third wife, 27-year-old Katie Lee Joel announced that were splitting up after nearly five years of marriage. Joel's nine-year union with model Christie Brinkley ended in 1994. His nine-year marriage to Elizabeth Weber, for whom he wrote 'Just The Way You Are', ended in 1982. It's believed that Billy had a prenuptial agreement to protect the millions his many hits have earned.
2012 - Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen played his longest show when he turned in a three-hour-and-48-minute, 32-song, set at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. (This surpassed the previously longest show, Dec. 31, 1980 at the Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, New York, which clocked in at 3:43).
