Client Studies Module - Placement or Live Briefs Assignment (part 8/9)
December 18th, 2018
This was a last minute brief brought to me by a colleague of a friend who is in fact the President of the Afro-Caribbean society of USW.
She approached me with the request to create the poster and event banner for the Facebook page for the Black History Month celebration show, featuring prominently an award winning black artist Scratchylus on his nationwide university tour.
(Above the poster and event banner below it)
It was again something very graphics based but even further from illustration from the last brief.
I used a mixed media style of creation when putting this piece together to give it a youthful and vibrant appeal.
My client was heavily inspired by traditional Afro-Caribbean culture and themes.
Examples she gave me to work from were her previous posters and some that she enjoyed the aesthetic of.
(The Examples my client gave me)
I managed to incorporate as much illustration to the piece as possible whilst still keeping to her original idea of using the photographs within the piece.
The fact that I am not black or having any known heritage or true connection to this subject matter forced me to familiarise myself with it. Through research, observation and most importantly direct interaction with my client and he desires for the piece. As it was very important to her and her society but also the cultural and hereditary side of it too. A sensitive subject but not one to be feared if tackled correctly and with respect.
A definite Learning Curve was had with this brief and one i would happily tackle once again!
