Today, we come to the end of the current trio of PADI special edition watches we had come in from Seiko.  They’re all dive watches, of course, but they approach things quite differently.  We had the purpose-driven mechanical and the solar-powered dressier option.  That then leaves us with the Seiko Prospex SUN065, which is unlike both of those that preceded it on our pages.

At first blush, you would say, no, the Seiko Prospex SUN065 is a purpose-built dive watch, meant for, and designed for, that task of diving.  And I’ve no doubt that it could serve in that task.  But then you notice there’s a fourth hand on the dial, and hey, look at that – a GMT complication has entered the mix! So, not just a dive watch, but a dive watch you can jet around the world in pursuit of sunken treasure or tropical fish, or whatever it is recreational divers go diving for.

Jamming a bit more into the dial of the Seiko Prospex SUN065 is ok by me, as it has plenty of real estate for it with the 47.5mm diameter case.  A good portion of that is due to the angled shroud that partially protects the diving bezel, and since my eye gets drawn to the bezel, this seems to wear smaller than the specs suggest (though not as tightly to the wrist as the Monster Tuna).  I also like what Seiko did with the sides of the case, giving cutouts to show some texture and color from the “inner” case.  When you’ve got a tall case profile, you might as well put some fun architecture in there, in my book.

A closer look at the dial reveals a lot of similarities to the SNE435 that we just reviewed, with a similar handset and applied indices, and of course the same blue dial we’ve seen on all of these PADI models.  Aside from design cues, there is one big thing that separates the Seiko Prospex SUN065 from the other two we reviewed – it’s movement.  Here, we’ve got the 5M85, which means it’s a kinetic movement.

On one hand, a kinetic movement is familiar – you move the wrist or shake the watch, and you hear a rotor spinning away.  Here, though, the rotor is not winding a mainspring.  Instead, we’re building up the juice to power the movement.  If things run low, you get the stutter-step in the seconds hand.  And if you want to know where your power reserve is, well, that’s what the screw-down pusher at 2 o’clock is to help you do (for me, this was a curiosity to play with at first, then quickly ignored).  So, while the Seiko Prospex SUN065 is not an automatic, in a pure sense, it is a watch you could put on the winder to keep it running if you’re not wearing it frequently.

This is the Seiko the me of, say, 6+ years ago would have gone for.  It’s a larger dive watch, plenty of blue to it, and the movement offers up something different than anything else I likely owned (then or now).  Current-day me also digs the GMT movement (though not the case proportions).  This is very much a casual watch, given it’s sizing and styling.  Sure, it’s a diver, but it doesn’t seem as “in your face” about it as the Monster Tuna does, at least to my way of thinking.  It’s just a few mm smaller, but that angled shroud sort of takes things down a notch, while giving it a hint of a vintage vibe.

For me, the smaller size of the Seiko Prospex SUN065 also helped the silicone strap (this time in black, but still with a metal keeper) to not have as much of a tongue hanging out to get caught on things – something worth considering if you’ve got smaller wrists.  Then again, if you’re considering the $750 Seiko Prospex SUN065 – and comparing it against the SRPA83, you’ve got your decision-making work cut out.  Pricing is similar, and capabilities are as well – styling is different, of course, and the movements are radically different as well.  Variety is the spice of life, no?

While I did not have anything against the Seiko Prospex SUN065 during my time with it, I ended up feeling it was, well, just too big for my own tastes as a desk diver.  I like the more compact Seiko divers, like my first-gen Monster, I suppose.  And of the three that I reviewed here recently, it’s the SNE435 that I’d opt for (of the three), it just fits my own tastes and use cases.  For the divers out there, though, I’m sure you have a totally different set of criteria, and I’m sure you could do well with either of them.  Here, with the Seiko Prospex SUN065, you get that Kinetic movement which sort of bridges the gap between mechanical and quartz movements, if you’re looking for something a bit different in your next diver. seikousa.com

2. HANDS-ON: ACCUTRON SPACEVIEW DNA ELECTROSTATIC WATCH

Hands down the most impressive new watch for the month of August is the Accutron Spaceview DNA. There are two important things to note with this new watch. First, while Accutron was closely associated with Bulova, it will now be its own brand. Second, while this watch looks like it’s based on tuning fork movements of old, it actually uses a very interesting electrostatic system. It’s still quartz-based, of course, so you get impeccable accuracy and precision, but the method by which it is done is really interesting. It also results in a watch that is visually unique. 3. WATCH REVIEW: MARATHON ANTHRACITE GSAR AUTOMATIC WW194006BK

A G-Shock is the most obvious choice for a watch to do chores with. It’s rugged, relatively inexpensive, and it has a ton of features like a chronograph and alarm that can be handy around the house. But it’s too obvious. I have been trying to find something that is just as tough but driven by a mainspring and escapement. So, I was delighted to see the Marathon Anthracite GSAR Automatic watch being reviewed this month. It has a tough PVD-coated stainless steel case, a water-resistance rating of 300 meters, and it uses self-illuminating tritium gas tubes so I can still tell the time even if I’m rummaging for stuff in the storeroom.

4. SEIKO PARTNERS WITH “STREET FIGHTER” SERIES FOR SIX LIMITED-EDITION SEIKO 5 MODELS

For better or worse, Seiko is releasing more limited-edition watches. While I appreciate giving fans the chance to own something that’s arguably a little more special and exclusive, I can’t help but also feel that it also encourages unsavory behavior like scalping. Still, Seiko’s latest limited-edition watches are sure to strike a chord with kids of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Based on the brand’s new Seiko 5 watches, these five new models are inspired by the characters from Street Fighter. Key characters like Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li are represented here. One could probably argue that they are too garish but, as the saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” They will probably sell out faster than you can say “Hadoken!”

5. WATCH REVIEW: LACO FRANKFURT GMT

GMT watches are probably not the most practical purchases right now, but I have always had a soft spot for them. It’s one of the most practical and useful complications, and I like how GMT watches represent travel and exploration. The Laco Frankfurt GMT is really the answer to the question, “What would a Flieger look like if it had a GMT complication?” It has all the hallmarks of a traditional Flieger watch like the blued-steel hands, triangle with twin dots at 12 o’clock, and large easy-to-read markers. I also like how the counterweight on the seconds hand is styled in the shape of a plane.

How Many Types of Watches Are There?

I used to think that watches can only be broken down into automatic and quartz type only. 

But as I read and engage with people in this hobby more, I’ve learned that they are more types of watches than that.

In fact, some people even suggest that there are 20 types of watches currently! 

Of course, I don’t think there’s such a high number of different watch types and we can actually break it down into 5 basic types. Below is my list of the BASIC types of watches any watch fans need to know.

1- Automatic Watch

First and foremost is of course my beloved automatic watch. To those new with watches, automatic means the watch movement (the thing that keeps time) get the energy needed to run it from a spring inside. In turn, this spring is tighten (or recharged its kinetic energy) via hand movement when wearing the watch. And thus the term automatic watch. And yes, it does not run on electric like normal watches do.

In addition, there’s also a “manual watch”. This type of watch also don’t run on electric. The difference with automatic is there’s no “automatic” tightening of the spring. Instead, its owner need to rotate the crown (the knob attached to the watch case) to tighten the spring MANUALLY. And thus the name manual watch came about.

If you’re thinking to be treated like a real man, then get yourselves an automatic ASAP! Ok, I was just kidding. A watch don’t make a man for sure. But if there’s something that will give credible to your image, then an automatic watch will do the trick - especially for businessmen or politicians.

2- Quartz Watch

Just look at any watch around you and I can bet those watches are mostly quartz. Unlike automatic, quartz watch runs using electricity supplied by a small button battery inside it.

Invented by the Japanese a few decades ago, quartz watch had replaced automatic watch as the primary timekeeping device currently. And the main reason for this is the VERY CHEAP manufacturing cost and VERY ACCURATE timekeeping.

I think the cheapest automatic watch currently is by the Japanese and Chinese manufacturers (Seiko, Orient, Seagull, etc) for about $50 a piece. And a good quality one will cost no less than $200. Quartz watch, on the other hand, can costs as low as $10! Talk about the very low price.

In terms of accuracy, quartz trumps automatic anytime. As it’s regulated by the high frequency quartz crystal, the watch is very accurate, having a rate of +/-10 seconds per MONTH. Automatic watch can has the same accuracy rate in a DAY.

So if you’re someone that need a precise watch, then a quartz watch might be the best watch type for you.

3- Dive Watch

Next up is dive watch. As the name suggests, dive watch is a watch that can be used for diving, swimming or any water related activities.

The history goes to decades ago when divers need a device to tell the elapsed diving time. This is very important to ensure they do not overstay their dive which can lead to fatality.

Thus, a dive watch was born. It’s a normal watch but made tougher and with high water resistance. This means that when we dip into the water wearing the watch, water won’t get into it. This was achieved by using seals around the small crevices of the watch to block water from coming in.

Fortunately, most watch nowadays were built with at least 30 m water resistance in them. If you think 30 m water resistance can be worn for swimming, then you might need to rethink about it.

Most experts preach for at least 100 m water resistance rating of the watch to be used for any water activity.

So what’s so special about the dive watch?

It’s very versatile look that can be used for casual as well as more dressy use. It looks very subdued and yet so handsome. If you only have a money to buy one watch, I’d recommend to get a dive watch as it can be used for many functions =)

4- Chronograph Watch

Next on the list is chronograph watch. I’m sure you’ve seen one of these before. It’s the watch with many subdials (those small circles) that have extra pointing needles on it. 

All I can say about this watch is it’s totally cool!

Not only it have a stopwatch function (more on that later), the busy watch face design with the extra needles and subdials make the watch looks sophisticated. In short, a very very cool and manly look!

To top it off, chronographs is actually a stopwatch that can be used to measure time (just like how they do in Olympic races and stuffs). While I never actually see any real use for it in my everyday life, it’s still a fun feature to have LOL!

By the way, don’t get mistaken with chronometer. Chronometer is a term for a very accurate automatic watch, certified officially by COSC, the main governing body for Chronometers based in Switzerland. And yes, these chronometers cost a ton of money =P

5- Dress Watch

Last but not least, is dress watch. As you can suggest, dress watch is the watch with more subtle design compared to the 2 watches above. It has a “dressy” look to it and is a great companion for formal events where you have to wear a suit or tux.

It has a lower functionality compared to dive and chronograph watches but in terms of looking draped and proper, none can beat a dress watch. So if you have a big event coming up, don’t forget to get a matching dress watch in leather strap to complete your style!

Sure, I’ve skipped over some types of watches such as smartwatch, GMT, pilot watch etc. The reason I skipped over these is because those are not as common as the 5 that I’ve mentioned above. Perhaps when I have more time in my hand I’ll dive into those 5 too.
